I saw some Umbrella Academy promotional videos recently for Season 3. The cast talks about their characters’ motivations, etc. When they got to Elliot, he was very careful to refer to his character as “she” (the character is a woman). The show is a huge hit for Netflix, and it looked like they wanted to reassure stockholders.

The whole show is based on the concept that this character is a mentally unbalanced, mentally frail person with enormous resentment towards their family, who they blame for all their problems, and could go off and destroy the earth at any moment, basically.

The person that (mis)cast Page must be kicking themselves. Page was never the type to begin with, which was a previously repressed, now aggressively sexy, superhero villain like Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn, acting out after she went insane, not a blank-affected, lollipop-headed anorexic. I think they thought Page was in X Men movies and was a big “get.” So they miscast an actor that wasn’t really suitable to begin with, to sell the show to the network. Now they are stuck with a miscast main character, and a lot of the show’s publicity has revolved around their personal ego, issues and insecurities, which seem to get more and more demanding by the day, and it’s too late to do anything about it. Politically it’s impossible to recast, even though Page is starting to resemble Clint Howard. And it would raise the level of the whole show if the part was played with more complexity and depth. It’s become a one note, “poor Vanya (who destroyed the earth) is to be pitied as a victim.” Several other actors are really doing a lot to develop their characters, but the pivotal one is regressing.

It’s become the “what wacky thing is Elliot Page going to do next” show, which is too bad, because it’s an interesting show and the plot has nothing to do with any of this. Page looks like he’s becoming bald as a consequence of hormonal treatment, and is trying to conceal it by pasting down his hair in a Trumpesque forward combover. He needs a toupee, like many actors. His hair can’t be explained away as “Vanya got a pixie cut,” it’s more like, “Vanya is being played by a middle-aged balding man who refuses to wear a wig suitable to the role.” The jagged-ended, brushed forward combover doesn’t even look like a woman’s layered hairstyle. Or a man’s.

In the second season, Vanya’s entire hairline had receded very noticeably, so I’m guessing it’s hormone related. And no one wanted to address it with hairpieces, which would have easily solved it. Shows should not be scared of their own actors. One of the male actors in Season Two spent the whole season wearing a hairpiece. The show was set in the 1960s last season, the female actresses all wore obvious 1960s style heavy wigs. One wore long, dark straight hair with bangs, which was Page’s character’s childhood style. It would have been so easy to drop another wig on Elliot’s head and be done with it.

r200 this is a good question. We know that no matter what, you cannot change the sex you were born into. You can put on men's clothing and adopt a male name but you are still a female. Hormones don't even change that simple fact. No one truly sees Elliot as man but so many folks are playing into her delusion that it's truly harmful to anyone growing up today who might be questioning their own sexuality or same sex attraction. The interesting part of all of this...men wanting to become women and women wanting to become men is that no one is telling these folks that perhaps amputating body parts and taking hormones will be far more harmful in the long run to their bodies than simply accepting that they are the gender they were born into. Once you have a double mastectomy, you lose ALL sensation in that area and well, as a woman, that's a really erogenous zone and therefore, your sexual pleasure is diminished. You can never get that sensation back. For men, chopping off a dick also means no more orgasms. I guess these things are not important to trans folks or if they are, they opt to keep their dicks and then go around demanding that lesbians should have to accept it as a different form of female. Sorry, but a dick means you are a man and the vast majority of lesbians recognize this even if the rest of the world chooses to play pretend. I just think it's a much better approach to help people who struggle with their sexuality to accept that they might indeed just be gay or lesbian. It's really a self loathing, homophobic choice to become trans which is why trans are in no way part of the LGB community.
