Does he even have enough money for a funeral/burial, or will someone have to set up a Go Fund Me?

He may be worth more dean than alive, licensing deals, etc...

by Anonymousreply 26January 19, 2022 5:46 AM

Rest in Feast.

by Anonymousreply 27January 19, 2022 5:51 AM

R26

What licensing deals?

R25

ALT by his own recent admissions was "broke". How busted he was we shall soon find out as his estate goes into probate. If there isn't a will Westchester courts will first seek out next of kin, if there isn't anyone court will assign an administrator to handle disposal of ALT's estate.

My hunch is yes, there will be a GFM page to raise funeral and burial funds for ALT. Unless the man himself made such arrangements before hand, and spelled things out in a last will and testament or something.

R24

Immediate effect of ALT's demise is that that his NYC home or homes (IIRC he did also have an apartment in NYC), will be sealed until next of kin or whatever is sorted. Landlord cannot enter, remove things, etc... without consent of court.

As to eviction proceedings that comes to a halt for time being. Leases do not expire at tenants death, but must be dealt with via other methods.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2022 6:03 AM

More..

In case of the lawsuit over that property in Westchester ALT was claiming it was his, thus can see why next of kin or someone would try and continue proceedings through to a final ruling.

If court did decide ALT owned said property, it would become part of his estate to be sold or otherwise managed as next of kin/executor or administrator sees fit.

by Anonymousreply 40January 19, 2022 7:00 AM

R35

Oh I don't know... Plenty of old and even new Hollywood are or died quite broke indeed. If it weren't for things like retirement or nursing homes founded by actors unions and others a good number would likely be on streets.

Anyone who knows the business can tell you publishing (including fashion) does not pay very well, not at grunt level anyway.

With fashion at least it's all about freebies, goodies, status and of course the fabulousness of it all. Anna Wintour has closets full of high end fashion and accessories she's racked up over the years.

Lower one goes down that ladder at fashion publishing houses less one gets in terms of such goodies. Believe me when I tell you everyone watches their back and protects their turf.

ALT himself got his employers to back loans so he could buy that house in North Carolina. He mooched further for home in Westchester. If ATL had any sort of money none of that would be necessary.

Huge part of what ALT had or got was paid for via others. Vouge/Anna Wintour paid for ALT's trips (three in total IIRC), down to Duke weight loss clinic, this included first class airfare to and back. It all was waste of money because ALT would rapidly regain lost weight plus additional.

Again we'll find out soon enough when ALT's estate is filed with probate (assuming there is a will), or Westchester courts assign a public administrator to sort things out.

Already black people on Twitter, as well as on CNN and CBS Gayle King, are acting as though Talley was some beloved icon of their community. The black community NEVER embraced Andre Leone Talley. Like me, he grew up poor in Mississippi, but he had an especially hard road. I'm from there, I know what a miracle it was for someone like him to go from there to where he went. He didn't manage money very well, but he made a mark and showed anybody could lift themselves up. Good for him.

by Anonymousreply 79January 19, 2022 1:50 PM

Anyone who needed insight into ALT should read The Only One by Hilton Als. It really shows how lonely he was, how he had to sing for his supper with these fashion people who treated him with barely veiled contempt and the insults and racism he had to bear among these people who really weren't his friends.

At the end of the article LouLou Falaise calls him a nigger in front of a room of people. It's mortifying.

People F&Fed the "dead to me thread" which is probably for the best because it's mainly trolls and fat jokes.

by Anonymousreply 96January 19, 2022 2:51 PM

It is sad that he struggled with a loss of stature near the end of his life. Yet the words icon and legend are overused to describe him. By most accounts he was a preening “taker” and sycophant. His obsessive focus on each year’s “collections”, buttons, frills and tattered finery don’t really count for meaningful knowledge or expertise. I heard him speak in a few contexts, and he was a pretty boring guy. Too much name-dropping and cheesy false-affiliation with richer and more successful people who discarded him. He was just “too much” and not in a good way. It is intellectually dishonest to consider him a role model for equity or social justice in the fashion world because was more interested in himself than anyone else of any color or persuasion.

The documentary of his life had a creepy artificiality to it. His public speaking was always way too focused on how much luxury came to him through his affiliations with designers and socialites. He turned into something pretty gross and awful in his desperate, sad last decade, grasping at fame in clumsy and really disloyal ways.

by Anonymousreply 97January 19, 2022 2:58 PM

LouLou de La Falaise's Nword crack to his face wasn't chicly, amusing and naughty. It was vulgar, stupid and mean.

by Anonymousreply 126January 19, 2022 7:41 PM

That Issac clip is quite insightful, not just about ALT, but about the transience of fashion relationships. I guess that’s true of most business though. Very, very few professional friendships really stand the test of time once the business part has wrapped up.

by Anonymousreply 127January 19, 2022 7:46 PM

I have little sympathy for ALT’s claims of racism. He was close friends with known racist John Galliano and threw the word ‘jigaboo’, a racist Southern term for blacks, around in the article at R80 like is was going out of style. He knew and went along with the status quo because he was a part of it.

by Anonymousreply 128January 19, 2022 8:04 PM

r80 Don't feel too bad for Miss ALT. He was quite upset at the writer for reporting on what he heard and saw: His dear friend LouLou is definitely not racist and how dare that nosy writer publish such a thing!

"Take, for instance, his description of Loulou de la Falaise, a French socialite and Yves Saint Laurent muse. In The Chiffon Trenches, she is one of his favorite dancing partners at Studio 54, and he writes of her glamorous, scandalous wedding to Thadée Klossowski, the son of the painter Balthus. There is no mention of the moment that caps off Hilton Als’s devastating 1994 New Yorker profile of Talley, “The Only One,” in which the same Loulou de la Falaise calls him a “n—– dandy” at a luncheon to the apparent laughter of fellow attendees, including Talley himself.

“That profile does not exist in the universe in which I walk,” Talley says. “This writer does not exist. He got it wrong.”

“So she never said that?” I ask.

“Loulou was one of my greatest friends. A dear loyal friend,” he replies. “She could have said it, but for her, that was not racist to say what she said. I will not repeat it. But it did not come from a place of racism.”

Goes to show what a house Nword mentality he had. No balls, no spine, no self respect. He deserved those foul creatures. All he wanted was for AW to notice him again, he would gladly rolled over at her feet in a minute.

by Anonymousreply 130January 19, 2022 8:09 PM

Exactly R129, he didn’t mind because those were in jokes in his group. Part of his appeal to these people is that they could be as racist as they wanted as long as ALT laughed along with them.

Sandra Bernhard, another friend, also thinks she can use the n-word because she has a ‘pass.’

by Anonymousreply 131January 19, 2022 8:09 PM

R129 That’s unfortunately true, and it’s deeply hurtful. ALT’s “explaining around” a wealthy or famous person’s racist incident is a dark double standard, the mark of a real toady.

by Anonymousreply 132January 19, 2022 8:12 PM

Has Georgia Tent and Awning commented about losing their biggest customer?

by Anonymousreply 133January 19, 2022 8:16 PM

It's a good parallel to Sandra but as she is Jolie laide Jewess and not Negress, she believes her pass is based on other semiotics. Sandra's persona is (was) built un snark upon satire upon shady role playing of despicable or risible characters, themselves passed through show biz history, all speaking in tongues and lightening fast transitions. I guess she gives herself a pass based on her assumption it is NOT Sandra saying it, but one of her ghostly personas.

Ok - I can see that this what ALT believed Loulou was doing. I spent years in those scenes and when someone super mondaine says something that is supposed to be naughtily taboo and mean, "speaking in the tongue of the non sophisticate" it usually is a little bit mean.

Being a toady still meant he suffered from the racism of others.

He's dead. See the whole man generously and forgiving. Let him rest in peace.

I agree @R135

by Anonymousreply 136January 19, 2022 9:34 PM

He clearly idealized white beauty and saw himself through their lens. He was accepted because he was a eunuch, an amusement. I see a parallel between ALT and Truman Capote who ended up loathing the very people he worshipped so much that he immolated himself. ALT would never be white, beautiful and thin and so ate an armor around himself. If he was so willing to forgive such an disgusting comment to his face from that Falaise bitch AND IN FRONT OF A WRITER NO LESS, then how many other vile racist comments about other Black people was he a party to and condoned, if not encouraged?

by Anonymousreply 137January 19, 2022 9:43 PM

The R80 article is really quite good. The whole “you fell in love with Paris not me!” Is poetry. And Daniela Morera had an excellent understanding of racism for the time with her commentary on how it might not have been awful for ALT as Vreeland’s friend doesn’t mean it wasn’t awful for the very few other Black people in fashion at the time.

Read Ben Arogundade‘s coffee table book, Black Beauty. He talks about how Paco Rabanne was literally blackballed for putting black models in one of his shows. And most of the vitriol was from the American fashion media higher ups. And Paco was white. Eventually they came around, but the fashion PTB were unapologetic about their racism. Even when black models were celebrated, there was an undercurrent of racism involved. Even Vreeland said things like “these girls have qualities not seen in humans”. Black models were treated as exotic toys; to some degree, they still are. And don’t get me started on black male models. Or black designers. It’s harder for them to get financial backing. LouLou was a cunt, but she wasn’t alone. From what I have heard, John Casablancas hated black models. That is purely anecdotal.

'He was larger than life,' general manager Tony Aliaj told DailyMail.com sitting at the booth Talley would occupy. 'You couldn't miss him, that's for sure.'

'He loved our cheesecake, the Tahitian vanilla bean cheesecake. He loved the food so much he'd even take extra to go,' he added.

He told how Talley would scarf down his meal while chatting amiably with staff and customers about his time at Vogue.

'He'd come in by himself,' Aliaj said. 'Customers would walk up to him and he'd share stories about Vogue and the fashion industry. He'd embrace it and would often pose for pictures with people.

'He was completely different than what you'd expect for someone fashion industry,' the manager continued. 'He was just a regular dude.'

As a towering and highly visible figure in the fashion industry, Talley had spoken candidly about his battle with weight gain and his relationship with food in the media.

When asked whether fashion and food went together, he told the Associated Press in 2003: 'Food is not important in the fashion world, where you are supposed to look like an asparagus.

'In my world, it's about butter pound cake, and fried chicken, and potato salad and hot biscuits...It's hard to break away from that for a lettuce sandwich.'

Despite reports that Talley was struggling financially, he didn't appear to have any money problems when he walked into City Limits, according to Aliaj.

'From the looks of it, he was doing all right,' he said. 'He didn't look like he was struggling. He seemed to be living a comfortable life.

'We'll all miss him here. He was so wonderful with everybody here. And he'd also give our staff great tips, over the top tips,' he added.

Aliaj said Talley stopped showing up at the diner after the pandemic took hold in early 2020.

The pioneering journalist began his career in fashion at the age of 28 after snagging a job as a reporter at Women's Wear Daily.

He was taken on by Conde Nast exec Anna Wintour at American Vogue in 1983 and was appointed its creative director in 1988.

Talley, who retired from editing in 2014, had spoken about his struggles with his weight and how it played a role in his fallout with Wintour, his once close friend and boss in his 2020 memoir.

The pair's longtime friendship came to an abrupt end three years ago when Wintour, Talley revealed, froze him out for being 'too old, too overweight, too uncool'.

The creative director opened up his lifelong weight problem which he said he developed after losing a close friend as well as his grandmother in 1989.

At one point during his fashion career Talley had moved back home to North Carolina into the house he'd bought for his grandmother and finally grieved her death by binge eating barbecue.

When he returned to Vogue as editor-at-large, Talley's weight carried on ballooning, something Wintour could not ignore, advising him to 'go to the gym.'

He got a personal trainer and tried the cabbage diet - where you just eat cooked cabbage -but it didn't work.

Wintour then staged an intervention with Talley's pastor and designer Oscar de la Renta and his wife, who were two of Talley's closest friends.

Wintour explained that Talley's weight was 'out of control' and he was sent for rehab at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center in his hometown of Durham, North Carolina.

by Anonymousreply 146January 21, 2022 2:26 PM

Talley lost 55lbs but he put it back on and he returned to the center three times for a 'yo-yo battle I long ago realized I will never win,' he wrote in his memoir.

Talley in his memoir also admitted how he initially believed the love of his fashionista friends would last forever, until they cruelly dropped him when he was no longer useful to them.

He said he has 'huge emotional and psychological scars' from his decades long friendship with the magazine's notoriously icy editor.

In a statement after his death, Wintour said his loss is 'immeasurable,' and that she will miss him despite their 'complicated past.'

Talley had been embroiled in an eviction lawsuit involving his secluded White Plains home, where he was still living and sleeping on a bed Oscar de la Renta gave him shortly before his death. It was eventually settled with him being allowed to continue to live there.

Former head of Manolo Blahnik USA George Malkemus and his husband and business partner Anthony Yurgaitis who bought the house for about $1million in 2004 with the understanding that Talley would live in it and pay them money each month.

But according to the New York Times, the lease expired in 2014 and it was never renewed, with Malkemus and Yurgaitis claiming Talley owed them more than $515,000.

Talley filed a counterclaim in January 2021, saying he believed the payments were an equity investment intended to result in ownership, and requested that the house be placed in a trust so he could prove his right to ownership.

by Anonymousreply 147January 21, 2022 2:27 PM

The thought of ALT spending time in that diner is depressing.

by Anonymousreply 148January 21, 2022 2:54 PM

The dual indignity of being so large that your weight gets mentioned in articles when you die AND the fact that the weight given is clearly a gross underestimate.

On a serious note, he does seem to have had something of a genuine streak alongside all the showboating; he may appear to some to have played the role of Anna Wintour's minstrel too willingly but he seems to have had something of a common touch and a pride in his origins too. A cynic might say that beggars (as he was after his fall-out with AW) can't be choosers.

by Anonymousreply 149January 21, 2022 3:12 PM

The weight is definitely understated. Any proportionate man who is 6’6 is going to be well into the 200s.

by Anonymousreply 150January 21, 2022 4:43 PM

I think at least 400. Did he really smell as bad as they say? Cannot see Anna putting up with that.

Without her glasses, she’s kind of a beast herself.

by Anonymousreply 151January 21, 2022 5:39 PM

Yeah, one article said that he ballooned up to 300 pounds. 300 pounds wouldn’t be that much on a 6’6 man. Kind of sad that it even had to be mentioned, with all of his accomplishments.

by Anonymousreply 152January 21, 2022 5:49 PM

I think he probably felt he had to put on airs and be obnoxious when he was with the fashion people. Maybe he was able to relax a bit, among people who didn’t judge as much. Reading about him makes me sad.

Rest well, sir.

by Anonymousreply 153January 21, 2022 7:42 PM

It was a nicer, Cheesecake-Factory-ish diner where he was dropped off and picked up by a private driver. Not so bad for a 73-year-old spendthrift fashionista claiming to be broke.

But his post-Vogue phase is sad. He should all along have been quietly feathering his future nest in terms of finances, home ownership, and some kind of professional activity even part-time, with a realistic awareness that he wouldn't have a front-row seat at the catwalk forever. One suspects this childish refusal of the Reality Principal paralleled his food addiction. But it's sad--He had the graduate degree, the style-world CV, encyclopedic knowledge, and great stories, and should have been able to segue into a Costume History or Art History appointment at a classy small college or one of the art schools or fashion schools. Or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 154January 21, 2022 9:14 PM

He ate at the diner 3 times a day? Did I read that corrrectly?

by Anonymousreply 155January 21, 2022 9:40 PM

Exactly R154. With all the boring talent plastered non stop on TV (I’m looking at you Andy Cohen), Andre would have been a welcome presence all these years. I could have seen a Fashion Police type of show succeeding.

R155, yes, you read that correctly. I thought the same thing after reading it.

I remember reading that when he was trying to avoid eviction from the house in White Plains, he kept pleading that he'd be homeless if forced to leave. Meanwhile, he still owned the house in NC he'd bought his grandmother, which was sitting empty.

I've seen lectures. He knew his shit though his reverential name dropping and tagging of everything he considered elite and chic lifestyle was off-putting to jaded old moi, who passed through those fashion & happy few worlds myself. I could see aspiring young pre-glamazons finding it VERY informative and compelling.

by Anonymousreply 166January 22, 2022 7:13 AM

That diner must have been mourning the loss of profits ever since he stopped coming in 3 times a day and taking extra food to go! Can you imagine? Best customer gone.

"She added that he also had underlying health issues related to his weight."
