Let’s retire the word lesbian

It sounds like a disease and it erases women-hood. Women who are same sex attracted should refer to themselves as gay women.

by Anonymousreply 87January 19, 2022 9:03 AM

It’s so funny. Sylvia Rivera, who is now being seeing as a trans pioneer, along with Marsha P. Johnson, had a few words about the word lesbian.

The comments are turned off on YouTube. Couldn’t be because Sylvia would have thought todays alphabet soup is stupid.

Lesbian = female same sex attraction. It’s an accurate word that supports the reality of biological sex.

by Anonymousreply 3January 16, 2022 6:25 PM

I never understood why there was a special word for gay females when gay men don't have an equivalent word. Gay men are greater in number and more visible in the gay community, so I would think they would have the specific word defining them.

by Anonymousreply 4January 16, 2022 6:31 PM

Oh do shit up, r4.

by Anonymousreply 5January 16, 2022 6:33 PM

R4 Lesbian are called Lesbian because gay men pretty much monopolized the term. The term gay in relation to same sex attraction was associated with men long before it was associated with women. As early as the late 1600s, gay had begun to refer to carefree and amoral pleasure. A “gay house” was a straight brothel, a gay man was a womanizer, and a gay woman was a prostitute. This gave rise to the expression gay boy, which was basically a gay male prostitute and it is from this that gay began to mean same sex attracted men.

Lesbian is a fine term. Women deserve their own language.

They do have a specific word: Faggot!

by Anonymousreply 16January 17, 2022 1:59 AM

I’d rather envision retired lesbians braining the OP with their canes.

by Anonymousreply 17January 17, 2022 3:10 AM

I'm a gay woman. I dislike the word lesbian. I don't like being reduced to a single noun. I'm a woman, and I happen to be gay. So I'm a gay woman.

by Anonymousreply 18January 17, 2022 3:12 AM

R18- amen girlfriend!

by Anonymousreply 19January 17, 2022 3:14 AM

No sane person could ever dislike the word "lesbian" after this brilliant defining moment in the history of the word.

There is a word for gay men.

by Anonymousreply 21January 17, 2022 3:18 AM

I agree OP.

There are male Lesbians on an island in Europe after all.

Why not use another word like amazon & be done with any male connection all together?

by Anonymousreply 25January 17, 2022 8:25 AM

Well apparently in UK English, zami and tribade are synonyms for lesbian. Pick one.

by Anonymousreply 26January 17, 2022 8:42 AM

R4 In many languages, "gay" is used exclusively to refer to men. Homosexual women are always called lesbians. English is kinda an exception to the rule.

by Anonymousreply 27January 17, 2022 9:31 AM

My women loving friends say they're Lesbyterian.

by Anonymousreply 28January 17, 2022 10:05 AM

I've already seen more than a few instances of "gay means whatever I choose it to mean" (paraphrased). It's not a safe haven either, it's already in many colonizers' sights.

by Anonymousreply 29January 17, 2022 10:16 AM

R22 Excuse you?!?!

by Anonymousreply 30January 17, 2022 10:21 AM

I've said it before on this forum, the word is just ugly. It's offensive to the ears.

by Anonymousreply 31January 17, 2022 10:23 AM

In my 20s, I thought "lesbian" sounded exotic. At the time, I felt "gay" was reserved more for the men (as we didn't have our own special label akin to "lesbian"). It also seemed weird to refer to a woman as "gay." Now, it seems to be accepted as an umbrella terms to cover both sexes. It doesn't seem as weird to call women "gay". But, I still like the term "lesbian."

by Anonymousreply 32January 17, 2022 10:33 AM

I refer to lesbians as lizards. When they are cute they are little lizzards (lay-zards).

by Anonymousreply 33January 17, 2022 10:42 AM

I’ll continue to use LESBIAN and include LESBIANISM in all communication. Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 34January 17, 2022 10:52 AM

R4 the Brits didn't believe there were Lesbians. Anti-gay laws were written for men.

Straight males are more apt to look down on gay men but consider lesbianism perfectly okay because those gals do the same things to females that they like to do. It just demonstrates how hypocritical (and dumb) straight males can be.

"Straight males are more apt to look down on gay men but consider lesbianism perfectly okay because those gals do the same things to females that they like to do."

Straight males are only "okay" with (pseudo) lesbianism when it's a "hot-girl-on-hot-girl" performance for THEM.

On "Bob Hearts Abishola" last night, relatives referred to their niece's Lesbianity.

by Anonymousreply 67January 18, 2022 9:57 AM

Having been to Lesbos quite a few time r53, I can safely say that the type of tourism the visiting lesbians are extremely parsimonious and not willing to spend much.

by Anonymousreply 68January 18, 2022 2:40 PM

The misogynist lesbian hater at r59 who thinks he can erase lesbians with the truly ugly queer - a term the purpose of which is to invalidate same-sex attraction and to subsume lesbians, gay men and bisexuals into the great trans "embrace" - can bog off.

The alphabet soup should definitely be thrown out though. Dump the homophobic T, and let's call ourselves with real words that clearly mean same-sex attraction: lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and variations thereof. We share much but are not the same so I prefer different words for homosexual women and homosexual men, although gay is fine for women too.

I'm happy with the word lesbian and am happy to be a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 69January 18, 2022 2:47 PM

Girls with Venetian tendencies. Very soothing to the ears.

by Anonymousreply 71January 18, 2022 5:56 PM

I've never liked the word "lesbian" and I never use it to describe myself when telling people face-to-face. I always say I'm gay.

That said, here at DL, where the lines are oh-so-clearly drawn, I say I'm a lesbian whenever I want you gentlemen to know I'm a lesbian. Mostly, you just assume I'm a gay man.

It’s funny because I know a few different gay women who hate the word and just want to be called gay. And if I recall correctly (I could be wrong), but didn’t Ellen say this as well (that the word lesbian is creepy sounding or something like that)? If not her, it was some white female celebrity.

by Anonymousreply 76January 18, 2022 6:46 PM

Both men and women should just be "gay."

Then we can get rid of the fake "Queer", and have "Gay Pride" and "Gay Rights" and stop the infiltration of the fake alphabet soup people who are basically str8s trying to take over our own movement......not to mention the "Ts" who have nothing to do with us since as THEY CLAIM, gender identity has nothing to do with sexual orientation...... ergo get the fuck out!

Gay men, Gay women, gay people, Gay Pride, Gay Rights. So easy!

by Anonymousreply 77January 18, 2022 7:05 PM

How about “beguine”?

by Anonymousreply 78January 18, 2022 8:12 PM

R72, don’t change on our account. If you’re not comfortable referring to yourself as a lesbian and prefer gay, then by all means say gay, even here. Just add the modifier female so we know we’re not referring to a gay guy.

by Anonymousreply 79January 18, 2022 9:24 PM

[quote] with the truly ugly queer - a term the purpose of which is to invalidate same-sex attraction and to subsume lesbians, gay men and bisexuals into the great trans "embrace" - can bog off.

The word queer also suggests there’s something wrong with us for liking the same sex. That’s what I hate about it. There’s nothing wrong with same sex attraction; I’m not ‘queer,’ I’m gay.

by Anonymousreply 80January 18, 2022 9:27 PM
