It sounds like a disease and it erases women-hood. Women who are same sex attracted should refer to themselves as gay women.
Let’s retire the word lesbian

It’s so funny. Sylvia Rivera, who is now being seeing as a trans pioneer, along with Marsha P. Johnson, had a few words about the word lesbian.
The comments are turned off on YouTube. Couldn’t be because Sylvia would have thought todays alphabet soup is stupid.

Lesbian = female same sex attraction. It’s an accurate word that supports the reality of biological sex.

I never understood why there was a special word for gay females when gay men don't have an equivalent word. Gay men are greater in number and more visible in the gay community, so I would think they would have the specific word defining them.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 16, 2022 6:48 PM |
R4 Lesbian are called Lesbian because gay men pretty much monopolized the term. The term gay in relation to same sex attraction was associated with men long before it was associated with women. As early as the late 1600s, gay had begun to refer to carefree and amoral pleasure. A “gay house” was a straight brothel, a gay man was a womanizer, and a gay woman was a prostitute. This gave rise to the expression gay boy, which was basically a gay male prostitute and it is from this that gay began to mean same sex attracted men.
Lesbian is a fine term. Women deserve their own language.

In my 20s, I thought "lesbian" sounded exotic. At the time, I felt "gay" was reserved more for the men (as we didn't have our own special label akin to "lesbian"). It also seemed weird to refer to a woman as "gay." Now, it seems to be accepted as an umbrella terms to cover both sexes. It doesn't seem as weird to call women "gay". But, I still like the term "lesbian."

The misogynist lesbian hater at r59 who thinks he can erase lesbians with the truly ugly queer - a term the purpose of which is to invalidate same-sex attraction and to subsume lesbians, gay men and bisexuals into the great trans "embrace" - can bog off.
The alphabet soup should definitely be thrown out though. Dump the homophobic T, and let's call ourselves with real words that clearly mean same-sex attraction: lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and variations thereof. We share much but are not the same so I prefer different words for homosexual women and homosexual men, although gay is fine for women too.
I'm happy with the word lesbian and am happy to be a lesbian.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | January 18, 2022 6:46 PM |
Both men and women should just be "gay."
Then we can get rid of the fake "Queer", and have "Gay Pride" and "Gay Rights" and stop the infiltration of the fake alphabet soup people who are basically str8s trying to take over our own movement......not to mention the "Ts" who have nothing to do with us since as THEY CLAIM, gender identity has nothing to do with sexual orientation...... ergo get the fuck out!
Gay men, Gay women, gay people, Gay Pride, Gay Rights. So easy!

The word queer also suggests there’s something wrong with us for liking the same sex. That’s what I hate about it. There’s nothing wrong with same sex attraction; I’m not ‘queer,’ I’m gay.
