I did this 30 years ago. I remember paying roughly 4 times the normal amount for the same ship/itinerary at any other time. I'm not going to spend that kind of money and complain. If you test positive then you quarantine on your dime (or the cruise line’s) at port (have a bus of the “damned” to the hotel). I doubt this is legally enforceable and you could easily make the same case for other respiratory illnesses, so it would never fly.

I did an Atlantis cruise to Mexico in November. The cruise line's normal policy was to have unvaxxed passengers wear masks. Optional PCR test 96 hours before sailing. Atlantis' protocol was to require that everyone be fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to sailing, a mandatory PCR test 72 hours before embarkation, and another test at the pier before boarding. I saw a couple of people turned away who tested positive. By the end of the week there were no reported cases of Covid. We lost one passenger who slipped on some open-air stairs the first night and broke his arm. He had to fly home from the first port. The only other medical issue that I was aware of was during disembarkation. Apparently one of the passengers had a heart attack.

I had sex with a different guy every day of the cruise, and got neither Covid nor any STIs. And, yes, I tested for both when I got home. The reality is (according to the CDC data) you are less likely to get Covid on a cruise than in any major city in America. Average case rate on cruises is 0.1%, while it is over 3% in most cities. IF a port decides to close to cruisers then the ship simply spends another day at sea. Far from the end of the world. I never got off the ship last cruise, as I had been to all the ports a dozen times.

If you have fragile health or just wouldn't feel safe, by all means skip cruising. And flying. And any travel or activities that expose you to lots of people. But don't denigrate those of us who do the research and make an informed decision. You're more likely to get infected with Covid at your local bar or movie theater than on a cruise ship. And your risk for STIs is the same whether you hook up on Grindr, get picked up in a bar, or travel with Atlantis.

I'd never want to go on a cruise, but they started back here (UK) months ago. I think you have to be double vaxxed and test negative before boarding. I haven't heard of any issues... one of my work colleagues has been on two in as many months.

My friends got back from that cruise and told me all about it at brunch yesterday.

There was a wide mix of people there. Some model handsome, some average guys, some fugly, some young, some old, many Asian/White relationships, a lot of drugs, a lot of playing, and also a lot of people just having a cruise and some drinks. It was really a mixed bag, depending upon where you chose to spend your time. There were drag shows, karaoke, performances, all the basic gay stuff to keep entertained the queens that just wanted to have some drinks after dinner. If you wanted to do circuit parties, there were plenty of those too (as the video clips here show). There was indeed a lot of messing around on the dance floor. My friend blew a bunch of guys out there. There were many private parties in certain rooms, with security guards to keep in certain people and certain people out as well. Some parties were regulated to be model types only. Some were set up for Only Fans encounters. Some were legit prostitution scenes. Other parties (like the ones my friends went to) were explicitly for Burning Man types, and the security was used to actually keep out the model looking guys who seemed like they were tweaking (and there was plenty of that). My friends felt safe from that scene of people and had fun avoiding them. They limited their drugs to some weed and one instance of doing GHB.

They met a lot of people they knew from other parties they had been to, especially Burning Man, and had fun mingling around. They got a great deal of sleep, because walking, sexing, and dancing all day wore them out. They are in their 40s. They would be up at random times, like awake at 4 am all of a sudden, and would go looking for some food (there was plenty at all hours), and would see commercials being filmed for luxury cars, starring drag queens. Bentley did a promotion on the ship, and brought a fancy car there just to film a gay-themed commercial. Around another corner, there would be a professional porno being shot, around another corner, just a straight up orgy, anything goes. Upstairs was what they called "the dick deck" where it was a dark and cruisy 24/7 sex area. Just downstairs, a cocktail lounge with round the clock performances for folks who just wanted that.

They did notice some folks overdosed on various drugs, and saw medical activity (which happens at any large event, including Burning Man).

They are in touch with about 50 guys they knew from the ship, and they all started a chat group to check in with each other and see if anyone got COVID. They all got tested three days after the trip. 4 of these guys actually did get COVID, but not my friends.

They knew two guys who were planning on going on the cruise, but they got COVID just before they got on the flight to Miami. They stayed home in LA and skipped the cruise, quarantining at home and living vicariously through their friends' videos and chats.

That's what I found out. I'm not a part of any of these scenes, but I have friends who are, so I too get to live vicariously and stay safe. They said next time my husband and I should join them. I might consider it, if we're out of this pandemic. I liked hearing that it wasn't just one big druggy slut fest. For some folks it definitely was, of course. But apparently you can very easily just enjoy an all you can eat and drink boat ride, with entertainment, maybe go to one or two parties, and maybe get freaky and slutty one night. That's about as far as my husband and I would go, I think. Might be worth the $3K investment...
