Ben Affleck is going to win this year’s Supporting Actor Oscar. You heard it here first.

ForThe Tender Bar. His competition is all over the place with not a single strong front runner, and not a single well known competitor. Kodi Scot-McPhee in The Power of The Dog maybe today’s front runner but I don’t think Hollywood is giving that kid an Oscar.

The Tender Bar was just released, Ben is getting raves George Clooney directed it and Ben is everywhere in the press right now.

People feel sorry for passing him for even a nomination for directing Argo.

I think all the positive momentum is building at exactly the right time. .

Team Ciaran Hinds

by Anonymousreply 1January 14, 2022 12:37 PM

Getting raves for playing himself. It's his Good Will Hunting character 20 years later. I thought the movie was kind of stock and boring. It doesn't deserve any awards, but I'm sure Clooney will manage to schmooze it into contention anyway.

by Anonymousreply 2January 14, 2022 12:46 PM

I think he will get nominated, but I’ll be surprised if he wins.

by Anonymousreply 3January 14, 2022 1:03 PM

I watched The Tender Bar yesterday and it was a forgetable piece of trash. Ben Affleck basically played himself...I would love for someone to point me to a scene where he does anything particularly amazing.

by Anonymousreply 4January 14, 2022 1:03 PM

It required no talent to do that role. Is J Lo helping fund the campaign? Maybe she feels bad about that movie they did together.

by Anonymousreply 5January 14, 2022 4:57 PM

Kodi deserves it, that was an amazing performance.

by Anonymousreply 6January 14, 2022 5:45 PM

I see JLo has joined us here on DL at OP! Welcome!

by Anonymousreply 7January 14, 2022 5:49 PM

I enjoyed the movie. Ben was certainly watchable and even if he's playing a version of himself, albeit a LongIsland one, it's a good performance.

PLUS, Ben's hot again. Yay!

by Anonymousreply 8January 14, 2022 5:51 PM

His new wig is very attractive.

by Anonymousreply 9January 14, 2022 6:07 PM

0 chance

by Anonymousreply 10January 14, 2022 6:08 PM

I don’t get the people who think he’s hot now. His face looks like beef jerky.

by Anonymousreply 11January 14, 2022 6:22 PM

I don't think he'll win, but he was very good.

by Anonymousreply 12January 15, 2022 7:15 PM

He was great at...playing himself? Wow, yeah. Give him an Oscar for that!

by Anonymousreply 13January 15, 2022 7:23 PM

One of the worst movies of the year. It would be a crime if he got an Oscar for THAT.

by Anonymousreply 14January 15, 2022 7:27 PM

Just watched it tonight. It's mostly a mess. Several individual scenes work on their own, but the overall vibe was pretty amateurish and phony. A lot of the characters and the way they are portrayed come off as bad imitations of ones remembered from much better and more authentic movies. Nevertheless, Affleck was the most watchable part of it for me. He has charisma and holds the screen. I had no idea who this Tye Sheridan is but he seems like another Ansel Elgort to me...a guy who is photogenic at certain angles and downright unattractive from others. They can't find stars anymore who are attractive from all angles?

by Anonymousreply 15January 30, 2022 1:21 AM

Ben who?

by Anonymousreply 16January 30, 2022 1:23 AM

He CANNOT act. No matter how much he sends his PR trolls on this site. He was a cute white boy who got the push in the 90s and ended up getting outstaged by his butt buddy Matt Damon.

by Anonymousreply 17January 30, 2022 1:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 18January 30, 2022 1:27 AM

I don't care if Ben can't act. He's hot. That's what is important.

by Anonymousreply 19January 30, 2022 1:31 AM

I thoroughly enjoyed The Tender Bar. And yes, Ben Affleck was excellent in it. I haven't seen most of the other potential nominee performances, so I can't opine on them.

by Anonymousreply 20January 30, 2022 1:31 AM

Bad casting too. Tye Sheridan looked ridiculous playing the 18 yr-old JR. He and his mother looked like siblings. And his college girlfriend looked about 25 herself. Is it that hard to find talented 18 year-olds for a B movie?

by Anonymousreply 21January 30, 2022 1:35 AM

R29 Well, he should be doing porn then not taking roles that should go to talented people. He's just part of the straight white boy club of Hollywood that includes Mark Wahlberg and Sean Penn.

by Anonymousreply 22January 30, 2022 1:39 AM

[quote] I don’t get the people who think he’s hot now. His face looks like beef jerky.

Was he ever popular with the gays? It seems straight women are the only ones to find him "sexy" and "hot." Ben was never that cute to me. I think young Matt Damon was fuckable because of that ass and those lips.

by Anonymousreply 23January 30, 2022 1:44 AM

I'll never forget that years ago a journalist asked Ben Affleck if he ever put his fingers in his bum and then smelled them afterwards. Never heard anything like this before. It was bizarre and unforgettable. By the way Ben said 'No."

by Anonymousreply 24January 30, 2022 1:54 AM

R9, it’s not a wig. It’s a hair system.

by Anonymousreply 25January 30, 2022 1:59 AM

They won't give him a third Oscar. It will be Kodi Smit-McPhee or Jamie Dornan.

by Anonymousreply 26January 30, 2022 2:04 AM

I hate breeder slob comedy/dramas. If I want that I'll watch Roseanne repeats.

The movie's a flop even on whatever fucking streaming service it's on.

by Anonymousreply 28January 30, 2022 2:10 AM

I barely remember Ben in Good Will Hunting. He was cute, I remember that. And his brother Casey was in it playing a chronic masturbator.

by Anonymousreply 29January 30, 2022 2:19 AM

I found Ben's covert venmo account (it's not under his real last name obv). He has a hair transplant surgeon on his friends list

by Anonymousreply 30January 30, 2022 2:19 AM

Is Affleck white enough to merit the award. Has Datalounge done the appropriate blood test. After all he is dating a Latina,

by Anonymousreply 31January 30, 2022 5:07 AM

Affleck's father is part Arab but it's been white-washed from the internet (his middle name is Geza).

by Anonymousreply 32January 30, 2022 5:20 AM

What is Bwn’s literal skin color?

by Anonymousreply 33January 30, 2022 5:22 AM

What is Ben’s literal skin color?

by Anonymousreply 34January 30, 2022 5:24 AM

I always remember Affleck's tiny little pointy teeth and enormous gums in Dazed and Confused. He's had massive amounts of surgery to attempt to beautify his ordinariness.

by Anonymousreply 35January 30, 2022 4:33 PM

He looks hideous now.

by Anonymousreply 36January 30, 2022 10:26 PM

Boring ass movie. He was barely attractive to begin with and now he’s just gross. Completely mystifying why he is so popular.

by Anonymousreply 37January 30, 2022 10:34 PM

Where did you hear that Timothy Byers Affleck (the father) is part Arab?

by Anonymousreply 38January 30, 2022 11:21 PM

He isn't popular. He's just a tabloid staple because he calls up the paps every 5 minutes to take his pic with whatever actress desperately needs publicity.

by Anonymousreply 39January 30, 2022 11:35 PM

Once you stop worrying about the performances themselves, it gets easier to see the horse race. The biggest problem Affleck will have is that Power of the Dog is the frontrunner for best picture, actor, and director and that means nearly 100% of the academy will watch it.

Affleck may be The Tender Bar's only nomination. It's not in theaters, it doesn't have much buzz, It will be hard to get enough viewers to watch it let alone vote for him. I also doubt the lack of a directing nomination wins him much sympathy. He's probably earned $100 million since on Batman and other projects and as producer, he got that best picture Oscar personally. He's banging J Lo again. He may be well positioned though, meaning he's got a solid chance, say above 20%, below 35%. Plenty of presumed second placers end up with the award--its the wild card Oscars that are very rare for major categories.

by Anonymousreply 40January 30, 2022 11:47 PM

OMFG who do you think you are, R40? Freddie Williams or Swifty Lazarr?

by Anonymousreply 41January 31, 2022 12:29 AM

No he can't win. I'm already so sick of Bennifer 2.0. Imagine how obnoxious they will be about THIS!

by Anonymousreply 42January 31, 2022 4:53 AM

Affleck is and always has been a lousy actor. If the Oscars nominate that dipshit, they've lost the little credibility they had. The guy in Power of the Dog is very good as is the deaf actor in CODA. They should be the frontrunners. And if they don't nominate Marlee Matlin, they've fucked up. Disabled actors are 'diversity' just as nominating a half-Latina, half-Polish actress playing a Puerto Rican in West Side Story is.

Did anybody see Rachel West Side Story on Graham Norton? Gawd, she's obnoxious and desperately needy.

by Anonymousreply 43January 31, 2022 5:24 PM

[quote] And if they don't nominate Marlee Matlin, they've fucked up.

Say that again please.

by Anonymousreply 44January 31, 2022 5:29 PM

No, Kodi Whatsisname-Alienface will win, barring a major earthquake.

by Anonymousreply 45January 31, 2022 5:30 PM

The Last Duel was pretty embarrassing for him and for everyone else involved with it. I couldn't decide which was worse, the acting or the "period" hairdos.

by Anonymousreply 46January 31, 2022 5:31 PM

R44 watch CODA - it's on Apple TV - it's surprisingly good and funny

by Anonymousreply 47January 31, 2022 5:33 PM

There's not a lot of widespread affection for Affleck in Hollywood right now because he never seems to be able to kick his alcohol problem or his obsession with garnering tabloid attention--I don't think people are happy he's back with JLo.

He's not a good enough actor to win an Oscar despite all that.

by Anonymousreply 48January 31, 2022 5:38 PM

[quote]Affleck's father is part Arab but it's been white-washed from the internet (his middle name is Geza).

Ben's father is so WASP he buzzes. Like, old line, American blue blood Social Register level WASP.

Ben's father (and mother) were pseudo-hippie grad students at Berkeley in 1972 when he was born, and had a lot of similar, internationally-based friends there. I believe Ben is named after one of them.

by Anonymousreply 49January 31, 2022 5:39 PM

Affleck is a Scottish name. It's an actual place in Scotland. When he went on Finding Your Roots trying to claim his Ma had been some big civil rights activist, it turned out to be nothing but bullshit AND he got Gates to delete the bits about how her family were slaveowners in Georgia - which caused Gates to be taken off the air for a year.

Geza is a Hungarian first name, not Arab.

by Anonymousreply 50January 31, 2022 5:47 PM

The Tender Bar was a maudlin piece of shit. It reminded me of a 1980's cable TV movie...and while nobody was bad, none of the performances were even remotely memorable.

It would be embarrassing if Ben is nominated for or wins for one of his least challenging performances.

by Anonymousreply 51January 31, 2022 5:51 PM

If Ben would admit to being bisexual and his past romantic/sexual relationship with Matt I'd like him more. Those two embody a lifelong loving friends with benefits.

by Anonymousreply 52January 31, 2022 6:27 PM

After seeing this picture of teenage Ben with bedroom eyes and a cocky grin intimately leaning in on a blushing giddy Matt Damon in a photo booth. I'm no longer convinced they are just straight guys.

by Anonymousreply 53January 31, 2022 7:47 PM

The only reason The Tender Bar is getting mentioned at all - and it has flopped - is because Hollywood just can't kiss George Clooney's ass enough. He's also a mediocrity but he can network like a king.

by Anonymousreply 54January 31, 2022 7:53 PM

R32 Ben's middle name is Geza after a family friend... his dad isn't half middle eastern LMFAO

J. Lol is just okay as an actress. But is an awful singer and mediocre dancer. She's so overexposed and was never likable. Everyone knows she's a stuckup bitch. And she's a white woman, not a woman of color. Being Puerto Rican doesn't mean you're not still white. I'm tired of Hollywood treating white Latinos as diversity. They've always been a part of film and mostly just took Anglo names in the past. J Lo is 100% American. More New Yorker than Hispanic as she doesn't even speak Spanish and her music is hip-hop and R&B which is African-American.

J Lo's facial beauty is the product of good makeup and plastic surgery. Before her stardom she looked liked any other attractive NY/NJ Rican girl but not naturally beautiful or stunning. She does dress well which I can give her props for. She's all smoke and mirrors. And the only people who stan her are basic bitches. Just like most of Benny's stans.

by Anonymousreply 59January 31, 2022 9:57 PM

Bennifer’s pr goons have been working overtime this year!! When will they all be too rich and old for this wasteful insulting nonsense?

by Anonymousreply 60January 31, 2022 10:03 PM

He’s not going to get an Oscar nomination. He’s not even on the BAFTA long list for BSA - and they nominated him as Best Actor for Argo.

Move along…

by Anonymousreply 61January 31, 2022 10:14 PM

r41 Just 30 years of watching Oscar horse races play out (and reading every magazine and article i could find when i was a kid) and work in entertainment. There is an entire section of the PR world in LA that is dedicated to the awards races and knew some of those people too.

Shame I can't make money doing the internet betting, its set up where you can get 4 out of 5 right and still lose money overall. The betting odds are usually a great indicator of the status of the race though. New academy membership, extra nominees, and streaming has really shaken the predictability up though.

by Anonymousreply 62February 1, 2022 3:30 AM

[quote] I read about 30 years ago that his dad was of Turkish origin.

I read that as well with even Ben saying something to that effect. It was even referenced on Wikipedia at one point.

by Anonymousreply 63February 1, 2022 3:33 AM

Would this fly with Jada?

by Anonymousreply 64February 1, 2022 3:40 AM

He was on Finding Your Roots - nothing Turkish about him.

I unfondly recall the Oscar race in 2013 when publicists overran the DL pushing the Oscar campaigns of Cate Blanchett in a Woody Allen flick and Leo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street. Allegedly, at that time, there were a number of Academy voters on the DL, notably the late, great Blue Agave, they were trying to influence.

by Anonymousreply 65February 1, 2022 4:21 AM

Well if he doesn't, perhaps he can blame that on Jennifer Garner too.

by Anonymousreply 66February 1, 2022 4:31 AM

Lily Rabe even when playing poor or lower class drips private boarding school education, she just can’t act herself out of that.

by Anonymousreply 67February 6, 2022 1:59 AM

He’s a sure bet. It’s a perfectly written role. The character is right there in the dialogue. He as terrific.

He's still got the Oscar from that Minnie Driver movie he helped write. And that hostage movie he helped to direct.

He doesn't need an acting one.

I just watched The Last Duel for the first time the other night. Ben was playing a medieval version of himself with a bad dye job -- wealthy landowner into the booze and broads.

by Anonymousreply 78February 8, 2022 2:54 PM

The movie was HUGE stereotypes on a threadbare hoary narrative. The art direction was overblown to the 9th. Surprisingly, it's not an awful movie.

by Anonymousreply 79February 8, 2022 2:57 PM

R79 is about Tender Bar. Applies to Last Duel, as well.

by Anonymousreply 80February 8, 2022 2:58 PM

Has OP made a statement yet? Or has she asked for privacy during this difficult time?

by Anonymousreply 81February 8, 2022 3:00 PM

I was wrong but I do think it’s a very weak year for this category.

I was rooting for Mike Faist from WSS.

by Anonymousreply 82February 8, 2022 3:05 PM

"wealthy landowner into the booze and broads."

This story has been told over 1000 times. Let's move on to something new interesting that does not involve Ben Affleck.

by Anonymousreply 83February 8, 2022 3:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 84February 8, 2022 3:29 PM

"Jennifer, bring me the ax!"

by Anonymousreply 85February 8, 2022 3:35 PM

Must admit I will miss seeing Bennifer on the Oscar Red Carpet and reading the resulting snarky DL thread.

by Anonymousreply 86February 8, 2022 3:53 PM

Also he doesn't even look bloated in Tender Bar. Just about right for his age. However, the Hair System is doing him no favors. He's 49 and should buy some 50 year old zaddy Hair Systems - that can stay in play until he's pushing 60.

How does George Clooney keep making movies? Like how does he get investments and studios to pick him up when he has such horrible returns?

If you make a movie with George Clooney, you will LOSE money.

I don’t understand his appeal to Hollywood for this simple reason.

by Anonymousreply 94February 15, 2022 6:47 AM

He's made a lot of money. I'm not sure his current projects are bombs. Do you have the figures? I bet they break even. If everyone gets paid, it's not a bomb.

by Anonymousreply 103February 17, 2022 3:07 AM

R95

His directorial debut “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” made $33 million worldwide, $16 million in the US on a $30 million budget — that’s a bomb.

“Good Night and Good Luck” in 2006 did $54 million on a $7 million budget so ok, we’ll give him that.

His next was “Leatherheads” which grossed $41 million worldwide on a $58 million budget — another bomb.

“The Ides of March”, like GNGL has a $12 million budget and did $76 million worldwide — so that’s 2/4 for him.

“The Monuments Men” did $155 worldwide on a $90 million budget. His highest gross but didn’t break even. I remember the Sony e-mail hack where he apologized to Amy Pascal for flopping. So Bomb #3.

“Suburbicon” was Bomb #4 where the movie did $12 million on a $25 million budget.

“The Midnight Sky” and “The Tender Bar” are streaming mostly.

So no, no one is making money off Clooney. There’s no money there.

by Anonymousreply 104February 17, 2022 3:16 AM

Also, you didn’t just predict that Ben Affleck - Ben Affleck??!! - would be nominated which would've been enough of a stretch, you predicted he would WIN. AND started a thread about it with that as the title! (A rather zingy, Hedda Hopper kind of title at that, stating we’d “heard it here first” like you were publishing an old timey gossip column or something.) AND it was ALWAYS a ludicrous assertion.

You deserve to be flogged in public. And whatever Sybil’s mother did to her should be done to you.
