“Please Don’t Go” (1992) by KWS

Omg this was one of my favorite songs back then. I used to wait for Z100 or KTU to play it!!! I was in love with this song back then, and then years went by and you never really heard it anymore, and I could never find this version of the song. It used to not be available on iTunes or anywhere! Thank God someone on YouTube finally uploaded it 13 years ago and I found it and fell in love again!

What a fun song. And the best version of it.

Did you like it? Wasn’t the video banned in the states?

I like it but this song is very Carlton-esque.

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2022 8:58 PM

KC & The Sunshine Band did it first in 1979.

R2 I’m very aware. And I like this dance cover much more.

Love this song. Showing my age now….

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2022 9:04 PM

Yeah, takes me back to my clubbing and Fire Island days. Danced and tweaked to that song a lot -- and it was fun!

by Anonymousreply 5January 11, 2022 9:05 PM

The video wasn’t banned here but it was in some places I think for being overtly “gay” even though it’s just dancing.

by Anonymousreply 6January 11, 2022 9:05 PM

I lived in Brazil at the time. This song was incredibly popular, but the gays who couldn't speak English always sang it as "fiz dois gols". (I scored two goals).

by Anonymousreply 7January 11, 2022 9:08 PM

KC does the original version version and this one in concert.

by Anonymousreply 8January 11, 2022 9:10 PM

This song was massive in 1992. MTV would play it a lot, it was played like crazy on the radio during the summer of 1992 and you couldn’t step foot in club without it coming on, ESPECIALLY gay clubs and bars.

I feel the gays adopted it as their song back then. It was so popular with everyone, but especially the gays!

by Anonymousreply 9January 11, 2022 9:11 PM

R8 that’s how you know this one is iconic, when KC performs this version too! They always liked this version by the way. I think it’s the only cover of that song (and there have been a few) that they liked.

by Anonymousreply 10January 11, 2022 9:12 PM

This version was out just before KWS'. And better IMO.

Gotta love 2009 when all this good shit was uploaded to YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 12January 11, 2022 9:16 PM

One of KC's few number ones and a ballad, no less. Prefer the original as always.

by Anonymousreply 13January 11, 2022 9:18 PM

Thanks for this! Haven’t heard it in ages but used to love it.

by Anonymousreply 14January 11, 2022 9:19 PM

R11 actually their version wasn’t released in the states until 1993 and didn’t chart at all, unlike KWS which peaked at 6 on the Hot 100 and 1 on the dance charts, and #1 in the UK.

Double You’s version peaked at 41 in the UK. KWS #1

by Anonymousreply 15January 11, 2022 9:21 PM

It was also a #1 smash in Israel of all places. It was huge all over though. I knew someone who was studying in Spain at the time and he complained how much it was played there on every radio station.

by Anonymousreply 16January 11, 2022 9:26 PM

Double You were authentic Italians. Hence the dark skin and smarmy looks. “White”.

For some reason, I thought OP meant this:

God how I miss the early 1990s.

by Anonymousreply 19January 12, 2022 12:29 AM

The KWS version is really heavily auto-tuned or whatever pitch correction method they were using at the time. I don't hate auto-tuned music, I would rather hear auto-tuned music than to hear someone who can't carry a tune sing but that version is just a little more so than I would prefer. The KWS version is much better than that one at R11, by Double You IMHO, I couldn't even listen to the whole thing, but to each their own, it is a good song that brings back memories.

by Anonymousreply 20January 12, 2022 4:00 PM

Spending the early 90s in Europe this brings back some has amazing memories. Thank you OP.

"Double You were authentic Italians. Hence the dark skin and smarmy looks."

Hi kkk troll, William is not Italian, but English, with an Italian mother and an Indian father, hence he is not white.

But there is redneckstan do you look EXACTLY like your neighbours? I bet so, but that doesn't mean Italians look like Double You.

by Anonymousreply 22January 16, 2022 3:28 PM

R7, this was actually the version that was popular in Brazil:

A favorite of mine. Brings back memories

by Anonymousreply 24April 14, 2022 8:37 PM

Was this thread created because the song was released 30 years ago this week?

This shite was number one for FIVE FUCKING WEEKS in the UK.

I associate this song with Snap!'s Rhythm Is A Dancer, Dr Alban's It's My Life (Pantypad Anthem) and Baker Street by Undercover.
