Why does Uma Thurman’s daughter have a coin?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 11, 2022 6:11 PM |
She looks like Tinker Bell!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 11, 2022 6:14 PM |
R1, Same reason why straight men's eyes will be drawn to the figure's breasts, as compared to the face, head, and hair of the men on other US coins.

Was she ever that thin?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 11, 2022 6:17 PM |
Who's she wearing? Halston?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 11, 2022 6:21 PM |
Anyone else immediately get an image of Julie Andrews with her outstretched arms in "The Sound of Music" or the depiction of an angel?
Can someone Woke explain why Maya Angelou was chosen rather than another Black woman trailblazer from earlier history?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 11, 2022 6:22 PM |
I got my own fuckin' coin!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 11, 2022 6:24 PM |
How wonderful - this coin to commemorate my starring role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard! Do you hear that, Paramount? Do you hear the people spend?

"But by the age of forty, as she revealed in her seven volumes of autobiography, she had already had an astonishing range of jobs, including short-order cook, waitress, prostitute, madam (running a lesbian whorehouse, aged just eighteen), tram attendant, nightclub singer and dancer, actress, theatre director, political organiser for Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, journalist and newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana, and TV script writer."
Goodness. What a storied career...

Here she is, singing calypso music in some old movie.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 11, 2022 6:37 PM |
What did she do exactly to merit a coin? The first I heard of her was when she recited her poem at Bill Clinton's inaugural and then after that she seemed to be associated with Oprah, always encouraging, and then increasingly there were snark stories about her divadom. Surely there were other black women who were worthy of the distinction? I mean, obviously there are. I'm just confused why her.

by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 11, 2022 8:02 PM |
There are 50 states on the quarter. But it's standard White People America on the coins.

Vivian Vance for the odd years, George for the even.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 11, 2022 8:12 PM |
R13. That you’d never heard of her before that speaks more to your cultural illiteracy than anything. I think she was a second rate poet and her insistence on the title Dr. based on an honorary doctorate she no doubt received for speaking at a commencement was silly, but I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is one of the great American memoirs.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 11, 2022 8:18 PM |
R21, spare me your fucking grandeur, you pompous ass. But I hope it made you feel better because obviously small things do.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 11, 2022 8:34 PM |
As a poet, Maya Angelou was the Amanda Gorman of her generation.

As a symbol, she is fabulous

Put Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill and Harriet Tubman on the $100 bill (instead of the $20 bill).
1. Because they fucking deserve it. 2. Because I want to see the Karens, Proud Boys and all the other intolerant assholes lose their shit over it on social media and have meltdowns.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 12, 2022 10:10 AM |
Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill only if the bill contains a NFC chip that plays Stone Cold Dead in the Market on any nearby smart phone
by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 12, 2022 10:24 AM |
R65, there are plenty of POC who deserve to be on the currency more than a mediocre poet. How about Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth or, if we move on from women, Thurgood Marshall, MLK Jr, or Black Elk?
Secondly we shouldn't be doing this to piss people off. Furthering division and anger is bad for everyone. We should do it for educational purposes and to broaden our definition of what it means to be an American.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | January 12, 2022 10:35 AM |
I meant that for R64 (Chaos)
by Anonymous | reply 67 | January 12, 2022 10:36 AM |

Revisionist nonsense.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 12, 2022 4:31 PM |
r87 it's more the trouble they don't use currency, isn't it? Just as many are confused by addressing an envelope, telling time or any other basic life skill that even the developmentally challenged are still taught but has been lost to technology for most of them them. Well, technology or over coddled environments that catered to their overinflated self importance.

r87/r88 the world changes. People move on from old tech and adopt new tech. Younger generations have to keep up, unlike older generations who are no longer part of the working world and don't really participate in society anymore.

I remember comedian Drew Droege (sp?) had a bit in which he tore her to shreds, claiming her to be a name-dropping hypocrite and a generally unpleasant person. While I like Angelou's work generally, I appreciated his candor in discussing his perspective of her (he was a student or assistant of hers or something).
by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 13, 2022 5:33 PM |
I read a magazine article discussing her like that too, r120. No doubt she had some insufferable moments.

Angelou's poetry was not very good, but her memoirs are terrific.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | January 13, 2022 7:26 PM |
This is the comedian Drew Droege's account of taking a class with her at Wake Forest University in NC, where he was an undergraduate, and being disillusioned by her pretentiousness and snobbery. It's from Jonny McGovern's talk show.
The relevant part starts at 2:10. Droege (whose haircut here is indefensible) is best known for doing the hilarious impersonations of Chloe Sevigny on clips you can find on youtube.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 13, 2022 7:30 PM |
I always thought it was fascinating how many black and mixed-race comedians did imitations of her. Probably my favorite of all is this one by Tracey Morgan on SNL ("It's my favorite...").
Obviously her pompous demeanor was considered ridiculous by many in the black community while she was alive.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | January 13, 2022 7:41 PM |
And here's Maya Rudoph doing a parody for SNL of Betty White's prank show: "Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Laughs"
"Zowie!"
by Anonymous | reply 126 | January 13, 2022 7:44 PM |
Why give a quarter to her when she had fame, fortune, and accolade. Which is fine, she has put out work people find powerful, Why not use a historical black women who contributed to America when there was no love, no Miss Angeleou, when she was just trying to freedom fight or do the right thing.
