Maya Angelou Quarter Now in Circulation
|by Anonymous||reply 134||January 15, 2022 6:56 PM|
Why does Uma Thurman’s daughter have a coin?
|by Anonymous||reply 1||January 11, 2022 7:11 PM|
She looks like Tinker Bell!
|by Anonymous||reply 2||January 11, 2022 7:14 PM|
R1, Same reason why straight men's eyes will be drawn to the figure's breasts, as compared to the face, head, and hair of the men on other US coins.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||January 11, 2022 7:15 PM|
Was she ever that thin?
|by Anonymous||reply 4||January 11, 2022 7:17 PM|
Who's she wearing? Halston?
|by Anonymous||reply 5||January 11, 2022 7:21 PM|
Anyone else immediately get an image of Julie Andrews with her outstretched arms in "The Sound of Music" or the depiction of an angel?
Can someone Woke explain why Maya Angelou was chosen rather than another Black woman trailblazer from earlier history?
|by Anonymous||reply 6||January 11, 2022 7:22 PM|
I got my own fuckin' coin!
|by Anonymous||reply 7||January 11, 2022 7:24 PM|
How wonderful - this coin to commemorate my starring role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard! Do you hear that, Paramount? Do you hear the people spend?
|by Anonymous||reply 8||January 11, 2022 7:25 PM|
[Quote]Was she ever that thin?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||January 11, 2022 7:26 PM|
"But by the age of forty, as she revealed in her seven volumes of autobiography, she had already had an astonishing range of jobs, including short-order cook, waitress, prostitute, madam (running a lesbian whorehouse, aged just eighteen), tram attendant, nightclub singer and dancer, actress, theatre director, political organiser for Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, journalist and newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana, and TV script writer."
Goodness. What a storied career...
|by Anonymous||reply 10||January 11, 2022 7:28 PM|
WTF. We will be marching in the streets.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||January 11, 2022 7:28 PM|
Here she is, singing calypso music in some old movie.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||January 11, 2022 7:37 PM|
What did she do exactly to merit a coin? The first I heard of her was when she recited her poem at Bill Clinton's inaugural and then after that she seemed to be associated with Oprah, always encouraging, and then increasingly there were snark stories about her divadom. Surely there were other black women who were worthy of the distinction? I mean, obviously there are. I'm just confused why her.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||January 11, 2022 8:00 PM|
The first whore on US currency!
|by Anonymous||reply 14||January 11, 2022 8:29 PM|
That's DOCTOR Maya Angelou, muffukkahs! She's the first "doctor" on US currency!
|by Anonymous||reply 15||January 11, 2022 8:32 PM|
I was molested.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||January 11, 2022 8:34 PM|
R10 - she was a hustler and a grifter. A SHAM, her entire life. It's appalling the respect and cred she gets.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||January 11, 2022 8:51 PM|
Does anyone even carry a pocketful of change anymore? I don’t think I could say who’s on the quarter now besides George Washington.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||January 11, 2022 9:02 PM|
There are 50 states on the quarter. But it's standard White People America on the coins.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||January 11, 2022 9:06 PM|
[quote]I don’t think I could say who’s on the quarter now besides George Washington.
Vivian Vance for the odd years, George for the even.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||January 11, 2022 9:12 PM|
R13. That you’d never heard of her before that speaks more to your cultural illiteracy than anything. I think she was a second rate poet and her insistence on the title Dr. based on an honorary doctorate she no doubt received for speaking at a commencement was silly, but I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is one of the great American memoirs.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||January 11, 2022 9:18 PM|
R21, spare me your fucking grandeur, you pompous ass. But I hope it made you feel better because obviously small things do.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||January 11, 2022 9:34 PM|
As a poet, Maya Angelou was the Amanda Gorman of her generation.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||January 11, 2022 9:59 PM|
I know what the laundromat quarter brings.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||January 11, 2022 10:04 PM|
R10 Dear Lord what an ugly puss. Caged bird my gay ass. She was as ugly on the inside as she was on the outside.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||January 11, 2022 10:11 PM|
R21. If you see my post as “grandeur” (pompous or otherwise), I can only imagine what your reading and writing level must be.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||January 11, 2022 10:36 PM|
She was such a known phony.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||January 11, 2022 10:36 PM|
First Major Asian Actress, Lucy Liu, will soon have her own quarter?
|by Anonymous||reply 28||January 11, 2022 10:44 PM|
Plagiarist as well.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||January 11, 2022 10:44 PM|
Incomparable Colman Domingo as Dr. angelou
|by Anonymous||reply 30||January 11, 2022 10:51 PM|
Capturing the grandeur and self importance
|by Anonymous||reply 31||January 11, 2022 10:53 PM|
I collected all the 50 state quarters . . . until I needed them during the pandemic and I spend every last one of them. Oh well.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||January 11, 2022 10:55 PM|
A quarter is not nearly pretentious enough for this phony.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||January 11, 2022 10:59 PM|
Anna May Wong is the Asian actress
|by Anonymous||reply 34||January 12, 2022 12:54 AM|

Who even carries cash anymore except old people?
|by Anonymous||reply 35||January 12, 2022 12:55 AM|
I think I'd rather have our gal OPRAH on the quarter
|by Anonymous||reply 36||January 12, 2022 1:57 AM|
Strong Black Woman,
Little Black Dress.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||January 12, 2022 2:11 AM|
George Floyd is a more suitable representation of the black community. Colored folks are so proud of his contributions to society.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||January 12, 2022 2:38 AM|
[quote]First Major Asian Actress, Lucy Liu

|by Anonymous||reply 39||January 12, 2022 2:39 AM|
|by Anonymous||reply 40||January 12, 2022 2:41 AM|
This is a sham! The first black lady on the quarter should've been the world's most important journalist Gayle King!
|by Anonymous||reply 41||January 12, 2022 2:41 AM|
I like her but she’s not a great poet. Maybe a step above Rod McKuen.
As a symbol, she is fabulous
|by Anonymous||reply 42||January 12, 2022 2:43 AM|
R40, Thanks for your post but none of this makes sense. No to Sally Ride too representing White women on a coin.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||January 12, 2022 3:15 AM|
Why not Sally Ride?
|by Anonymous||reply 44||January 12, 2022 3:25 AM|
I want the Maya Angelou toilet paper.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||January 12, 2022 3:28 AM|
r15 she wasn't a doctor. Maya Angelou had an HONORARY PhD, not a real one. If you don't work for one, you don't get the title.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||January 12, 2022 3:29 AM|
OP = worse than Hitler and Dr. Adolf Hitler
|by Anonymous||reply 47||January 12, 2022 3:31 AM|
Blow it out your cunt r47 this is the active thread
|by Anonymous||reply 48||January 12, 2022 3:40 AM|
R45 Even when brand new it looks used. Quite fascinating actually.

|by Anonymous||reply 51||January 12, 2022 6:09 AM|
I loved her poem An Ode To A Frozen Giraffe 🦒
|by Anonymous||reply 52||January 12, 2022 6:44 AM|
Maya, being stunning and brave.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||January 12, 2022 8:28 AM|
No corruption rumors for Wilma Mankiller?
|by Anonymous||reply 54||January 12, 2022 8:48 AM|
And where the fuck is our Dionne Warwick dime?
|by Anonymous||reply 55||January 12, 2022 9:22 AM|
She gets a quarter?
I wrote fucking The Bluest Eye. Beloved. Song of FUCKING Solomon.
I better get on that damn $20.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||January 12, 2022 9:35 AM|
Real Toni Morrison would have flexed her Nobel Prize, R56.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||January 12, 2022 9:37 AM|
Please R57. No one but boring as fuck academics know about my Nobel.
I want be on a coin, damn it.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||January 12, 2022 10:18 AM|
Toni's still alive? She was old when I knew her and I was young.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||January 12, 2022 10:39 AM|
OOPs, RIP Toni.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||January 12, 2022 10:45 AM|
Fuck, I mean really . Why not Sojourner Truth?
|by Anonymous||reply 61||January 12, 2022 10:49 AM|
Honor Madam C. J. Walker.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||January 12, 2022 10:52 AM|
I love when the racist queens get all bent out of shape over something like this ... that has ZERO impact on their day-to-day life.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||January 12, 2022 11:01 AM|
Put Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill and Harriet Tubman on the $100 bill (instead of the $20 bill).
1. Because they fucking deserve it. 2. Because I want to see the Karens, Proud Boys and all the other intolerant assholes lose their shit over it on social media and have meltdowns.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||January 12, 2022 11:10 AM|
Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill only if the bill contains a NFC chip that plays Stone Cold Dead in the Market on any nearby smart phone
|by Anonymous||reply 65||January 12, 2022 11:24 AM|
R65, there are plenty of POC who deserve to be on the currency more than a mediocre poet. How about Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth or, if we move on from women, Thurgood Marshall, MLK Jr, or Black Elk?
Secondly we shouldn't be doing this to piss people off. Furthering division and anger is bad for everyone. We should do it for educational purposes and to broaden our definition of what it means to be an American.
|by Anonymous||reply 66||January 12, 2022 11:35 AM|
I meant that for R64 (Chaos)
|by Anonymous||reply 67||January 12, 2022 11:36 AM|
How many are familiar with the courageous acts of Sojourner Truth?
R63, Honestly I've never even heard of her but I'd rather she her face on a quarter. Admire those who battle against near impossible odds to be a leader and source of inspiration.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||January 12, 2022 12:51 PM|
Oprah wants to be on the chocolate coin with the gold foil wrapping.

Her real name was Isabella Baumfree. She changed her name in her 40s.
She was from New York. That's not the south!
|by Anonymous||reply 71||January 12, 2022 1:34 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 72||January 12, 2022 1:38 PM|
THE chocolate coin? How about a thousand of them?
|by Anonymous||reply 73||January 12, 2022 1:51 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 74||January 12, 2022 1:58 PM|
R73- The OWN network is presenting a TWO HOUR special where Oprah talks about how much she LOVES eating.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||January 12, 2022 2:00 PM|
This is absolutely disgraceful that CIS woman Maya Angelou appears ahead of a coin ahead of Marsha P Johnson. This coin is LITERALLY transphobic and LITERALLY kill millions of trans women of color, non-color and invisible-to-the-human-eye-colors-of-the-spectrum with it's circulation.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||January 12, 2022 2:06 PM|
Wasn't she a great big fat person?

[quote] Anna May Wong is the Asian actress
|by Anonymous||reply 78||January 12, 2022 2:18 PM|
That doesn’t even vaguely resemble her. I’m cracking up. Maya Angelou was a great big fat person who dressed in Chico’s and headwraps, not sexy strapless gowns.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||January 12, 2022 2:28 PM|
The only resemblance is in the broad cheekbones and the head wrap.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||January 12, 2022 2:28 PM|
Sally Ride must be the first self-acknowledged lesbian on US currency.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||January 12, 2022 2:42 PM|
r78 That's Nancy Kwan.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||January 12, 2022 2:42 PM|
I'm waiting for the Julia Roberts as Harriet Tubman quarter.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||January 12, 2022 2:48 PM|
a black person I know on social noted that there's a slaveowner on the front of the same coin. I don't know if that means they want Jefferson entirely 'erased' or what
|by Anonymous||reply 84||January 12, 2022 2:50 PM|
Was she really Mayan?
|by Anonymous||reply 85||January 12, 2022 2:51 PM|
It's so weird to me that people still use cash and change. I guess they haven't arrived in the 21st Century yet.
|by Anonymous||reply 86||January 12, 2022 4:26 PM|
I pay with exact change or with enough coins to get back only bills. The old timer cashiers are very quick, but the younger dipshits can’t add or subtract to save their souls.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||January 12, 2022 5:31 PM|
r87 it's more the trouble they don't use currency, isn't it? Just as many are confused by addressing an envelope, telling time or any other basic life skill that even the developmentally challenged are still taught but has been lost to technology for most of them them. Well, technology or over coddled environments that catered to their overinflated self importance.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||January 12, 2022 5:49 PM|
Those damn newfangled telephones are ruining the young people! They don't even know how to send telegrams anymore!
|by Anonymous||reply 89||January 12, 2022 5:56 PM|
r87/r88 the world changes. People move on from old tech and adopt new tech. Younger generations have to keep up, unlike older generations who are no longer part of the working world and don't really participate in society anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||January 12, 2022 5:57 PM|
r90 Part of keeping up is not becoming lazy on the new and neglecting the old. 'lest they become as helpless and useless as the geezers
|by Anonymous||reply 91||January 12, 2022 6:33 PM|
[quote] People move on from old tech and adopt new tech.
Is the ability to do sums in one’s head ‘old tech’? Is innumeracy among young workers the new technology that at awaits us?
|by Anonymous||reply 92||January 12, 2022 6:47 PM|
Lots of people suck at math. It's been that way forever. I recently saw an interview with Fran Lebowitz and she said she can barely do simple addition and subtraction in her head, and she's hopeless at anything else.
|by Anonymous||reply 93||January 12, 2022 7:57 PM|
Why not Barbara Jordan?
|by Anonymous||reply 94||January 12, 2022 8:00 PM|
Barbara Jordan would've been a good choice. She was one fierce dyke!
|by Anonymous||reply 95||January 12, 2022 8:04 PM|
I remember studying Jordan in grade school. She was very accomished and broke a lot of barriers for her time. Sadly, largely forgotten now.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||January 12, 2022 8:06 PM|
I'd rather have the MABEL KING quarter in circulation. Raising Rog and Dee as an OBESE SINGLE woman was a major accomplishment.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||January 12, 2022 8:16 PM|
R92 Actually, the most adhered to philosophy of Math Education in the US and internationally at present is Singapore Math which has “Mental Math” at its core, so it very much back in vogue.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||January 12, 2022 11:08 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 99||January 13, 2022 12:36 AM|

|by Anonymous||reply 100||January 13, 2022 12:48 AM|

|by Anonymous||reply 101||January 13, 2022 12:55 AM|
I’m earning my coin NOW.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||January 13, 2022 12:57 AM|
R100 More like a three dollar bill
|by Anonymous||reply 103||January 13, 2022 1:49 AM|
I hope I'm not forgotten.
|by Anonymous||reply 104||January 13, 2022 2:39 AM|

|by Anonymous||reply 105||January 13, 2022 2:43 AM|
Maya Angelou on the Quarter is all part of the NOTHING MATTERS AND ANYTHING GOES philosophy nowadays.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||January 13, 2022 2:49 AM|
R53, holy shite. My first time seeing that — she was much more of an arrogant cunt than I realized.
|by Anonymous||reply 107||January 13, 2022 3:01 AM|
R53-MOTHER JEFFERSON ( Zara Cully) is more deserving of a coin than MA
|by Anonymous||reply 108||January 13, 2022 3:11 AM|
Doesn't Harriet Tubman or Rosa Parks get any love. Rosa gets park of the shitty 10 Freeway in WLA. Maya Angelous is overrated. MISS Angelou, I should say.
|by Anonymous||reply 109||January 13, 2022 3:57 AM|
r53's clip made me think of Chris Farley as Matt Foley - "well la-di-frickin-DA!"
|by Anonymous||reply 110||January 13, 2022 4:33 AM|
That woman should have asked Ms. Angelou what her tricks called her.
|by Anonymous||reply 111||January 13, 2022 5:52 AM|
Maya wandered into my art gallery once. She was so extraordinary that I closed and ordered us lunch. Three hours later we were still chatting. I have met and known some amazing people but she was really something special.
She sent me a box with her books with a lovely note I framed. Truly remarkable person.
|by Anonymous||reply 112||January 13, 2022 7:11 AM|
R112, did she sign the note as DOCTOR Angelou?
|by Anonymous||reply 113||January 13, 2022 7:36 AM|
Miss Angelou if you’re nasty.
|by Anonymous||reply 114||January 13, 2022 1:55 PM|
I would have preferred Shirley Hemphill on a quarter in circulation. She was tough, fair minded and friendly and unpretentious UNLIKE MA.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||January 13, 2022 2:16 PM|
Marlo Thomas once announced to a friend of mine that Maya Angelou was a cunt.
|by Anonymous||reply 116||January 13, 2022 3:40 PM|
Loved her autobiographies, but her poetry was pompous and self-centered. But she was a master storyteller.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||January 13, 2022 4:00 PM|
The KUM. QUAT. The KI. WI.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||January 13, 2022 6:11 PM|
I fully support a Shirley Hemphill coin.
|by Anonymous||reply 119||January 13, 2022 6:13 PM|
I remember comedian Drew Droege (sp?) had a bit in which he tore her to shreds, claiming her to be a name-dropping hypocrite and a generally unpleasant person. While I like Angelou's work generally, I appreciated his candor in discussing his perspective of her (he was a student or assistant of hers or something).
|by Anonymous||reply 120||January 13, 2022 6:33 PM|
I read a magazine article discussing her like that too, r120. No doubt she had some insufferable moments.
|by Anonymous||reply 121||January 13, 2022 6:42 PM|
Drew Droege: Maya Angelou Is An Asshole
|by Anonymous||reply 122||January 13, 2022 8:14 PM|
Angelou's poetry was not very good, but her memoirs are terrific.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||January 13, 2022 8:26 PM|
This is the comedian Drew Droege's account of taking a class with her at Wake Forest University in NC, where he was an undergraduate, and being disillusioned by her pretentiousness and snobbery. It's from Jonny McGovern's talk show.
The relevant part starts at 2:10. Droege (whose haircut here is indefensible) is best known for doing the hilarious impersonations of Chloe Sevigny on clips you can find on youtube.
|by Anonymous||reply 124||January 13, 2022 8:30 PM|
I always thought it was fascinating how many black and mixed-race comedians did imitations of her. Probably my favorite of all is this one by Tracey Morgan on SNL ("It's my favorite...").
Obviously her pompous demeanor was considered ridiculous by many in the black community while she was alive.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||January 13, 2022 8:41 PM|
And here's Maya Rudoph doing a parody for SNL of Betty White's prank show: "Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Laughs"
|by Anonymous||reply 126||January 13, 2022 8:44 PM|
Why give a quarter to her when she had fame, fortune, and accolade. Which is fine, she has put out work people find powerful, Why not use a historical black women who contributed to America when there was no love, no Miss Angeleou, when she was just trying to freedom fight or do the right thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 127||January 15, 2022 1:41 AM|
Martin Luther King would be FAR MORE appropriate on a quarter then MIZZ Angelou
|by Anonymous||reply 128||January 15, 2022 5:05 AM|
Did I ever tell any of you about the time Nina Simone brutally stabbed me? I still have the scars...
|by Anonymous||reply 129||January 15, 2022 6:34 AM|
