Why does Uma Thurman’s daughter have a coin?

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2022 6:11 PM

She looks like Tinker Bell!

by Anonymousreply 2January 11, 2022 6:14 PM

R1, Same reason why straight men's eyes will be drawn to the figure's breasts, as compared to the face, head, and hair of the men on other US coins.

by Anonymousreply 3January 11, 2022 6:15 PM

Was she ever that thin?

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2022 6:17 PM

Who's she wearing? Halston?

by Anonymousreply 5January 11, 2022 6:21 PM

Anyone else immediately get an image of Julie Andrews with her outstretched arms in "The Sound of Music" or the depiction of an angel?

Can someone Woke explain why Maya Angelou was chosen rather than another Black woman trailblazer from earlier history?

by Anonymousreply 6January 11, 2022 6:22 PM

I got my own fuckin' coin!

by Anonymousreply 7January 11, 2022 6:24 PM

How wonderful - this coin to commemorate my starring role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard! Do you hear that, Paramount? Do you hear the people spend?

by Anonymousreply 8January 11, 2022 6:25 PM

[Quote]Was she ever that thin?

"But by the age of forty, as she revealed in her seven volumes of autobiography, she had already had an astonishing range of jobs, including short-order cook, waitress, prostitute, madam (running a lesbian whorehouse, aged just eighteen), tram attendant, nightclub singer and dancer, actress, theatre director, political organiser for Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, journalist and newspaper editor in Egypt and Ghana, and TV script writer."

Goodness. What a storied career...

A QUARTER!!!!!!??????

WTF. We will be marching in the streets.

by Anonymousreply 11January 11, 2022 6:28 PM

Here she is, singing calypso music in some old movie.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 12January 11, 2022 6:37 PM

What did she do exactly to merit a coin? The first I heard of her was when she recited her poem at Bill Clinton's inaugural and then after that she seemed to be associated with Oprah, always encouraging, and then increasingly there were snark stories about her divadom. Surely there were other black women who were worthy of the distinction? I mean, obviously there are. I'm just confused why her.

by Anonymousreply 13January 11, 2022 7:00 PM

The first whore on US currency!

by Anonymousreply 14January 11, 2022 7:29 PM

That's DOCTOR Maya Angelou, muffukkahs! She's the first "doctor" on US currency!

by Anonymousreply 15January 11, 2022 7:32 PM

I was molested.

by Anonymousreply 16January 11, 2022 7:34 PM

R10 - she was a hustler and a grifter. A SHAM, her entire life. It's appalling the respect and cred she gets.

by Anonymousreply 17January 11, 2022 7:51 PM

Does anyone even carry a pocketful of change anymore? I don’t think I could say who’s on the quarter now besides George Washington.

by Anonymousreply 18January 11, 2022 8:02 PM

There are 50 states on the quarter. But it's standard White People America on the coins.

by Anonymousreply 19January 11, 2022 8:06 PM

[quote]I don’t think I could say who’s on the quarter now besides George Washington.

Vivian Vance for the odd years, George for the even.

by Anonymousreply 20January 11, 2022 8:12 PM

R13. That you’d never heard of her before that speaks more to your cultural illiteracy than anything. I think she was a second rate poet and her insistence on the title Dr. based on an honorary doctorate she no doubt received for speaking at a commencement was silly, but I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is one of the great American memoirs.

by Anonymousreply 21January 11, 2022 8:18 PM

R21, spare me your fucking grandeur, you pompous ass. But I hope it made you feel better because obviously small things do.

by Anonymousreply 22January 11, 2022 8:34 PM

As a poet, Maya Angelou was the Amanda Gorman of her generation.

by Anonymousreply 23January 11, 2022 8:59 PM

I know what the laundromat quarter brings.

by Anonymousreply 24January 11, 2022 9:04 PM

R10 Dear Lord what an ugly puss. Caged bird my gay ass. She was as ugly on the inside as she was on the outside.

by Anonymousreply 25January 11, 2022 9:11 PM

R21. If you see my post as “grandeur” (pompous or otherwise), I can only imagine what your reading and writing level must be.

by Anonymousreply 26January 11, 2022 9:36 PM

She was such a known phony.

by Anonymousreply 27January 11, 2022 9:36 PM

First Major Asian Actress, Lucy Liu, will soon have her own quarter?

by Anonymousreply 28January 11, 2022 9:44 PM

by Anonymousreply 37January 12, 2022 1:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 41January 12, 2022 1:41 AM

I like her but she’s not a great poet. Maybe a step above Rod McKuen.

As a symbol, she is fabulous

by Anonymousreply 42January 12, 2022 1:43 AM

R40, Thanks for your post but none of this makes sense. No to Sally Ride too representing White women on a coin.

by Anonymousreply 43January 12, 2022 2:15 AM

Why not Sally Ride?

by Anonymousreply 44January 12, 2022 2:25 AM

I want the Maya Angelou toilet paper.

by Anonymousreply 45January 12, 2022 2:28 AM

r15 she wasn't a doctor. Maya Angelou had an HONORARY PhD, not a real one. If you don't work for one, you don't get the title.

Put Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill and Harriet Tubman on the $100 bill (instead of the $20 bill).

1. Because they fucking deserve it. 2. Because I want to see the Karens, Proud Boys and all the other intolerant assholes lose their shit over it on social media and have meltdowns.

by Anonymousreply 64January 12, 2022 10:10 AM

Dr. Angelou on the $50 bill only if the bill contains a NFC chip that plays Stone Cold Dead in the Market on any nearby smart phone

by Anonymousreply 65January 12, 2022 10:24 AM

R65, there are plenty of POC who deserve to be on the currency more than a mediocre poet. How about Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth or, if we move on from women, Thurgood Marshall, MLK Jr, or Black Elk?

Secondly we shouldn't be doing this to piss people off. Furthering division and anger is bad for everyone. We should do it for educational purposes and to broaden our definition of what it means to be an American.

by Anonymousreply 66January 12, 2022 10:35 AM

I meant that for R64 (Chaos)

by Anonymousreply 67January 12, 2022 10:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 75January 12, 2022 1:00 PM

This is absolutely disgraceful that CIS woman Maya Angelou appears ahead of a coin ahead of Marsha P Johnson. This coin is LITERALLY transphobic and LITERALLY kill millions of trans women of color, non-color and invisible-to-the-human-eye-colors-of-the-spectrum with it's circulation.

by Anonymousreply 76January 12, 2022 1:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 78January 12, 2022 1:18 PM

Revisionist nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 79January 12, 2022 1:28 PM

The only resemblance is in the broad cheekbones and the head wrap.

by Anonymousreply 80January 12, 2022 1:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 83January 12, 2022 1:48 PM

a black person I know on social noted that there's a slaveowner on the front of the same coin. I don't know if that means they want Jefferson entirely 'erased' or what

by Anonymousreply 84January 12, 2022 1:50 PM

Was she really Mayan?

by Anonymousreply 85January 12, 2022 1:51 PM

It's so weird to me that people still use cash and change. I guess they haven't arrived in the 21st Century yet.

by Anonymousreply 86January 12, 2022 3:26 PM

I pay with exact change or with enough coins to get back only bills. The old timer cashiers are very quick, but the younger dipshits can’t add or subtract to save their souls.

by Anonymousreply 87January 12, 2022 4:31 PM

r87 it's more the trouble they don't use currency, isn't it? Just as many are confused by addressing an envelope, telling time or any other basic life skill that even the developmentally challenged are still taught but has been lost to technology for most of them them. Well, technology or over coddled environments that catered to their overinflated self importance.

by Anonymousreply 88January 12, 2022 4:49 PM

Those damn newfangled telephones are ruining the young people! They don't even know how to send telegrams anymore!

by Anonymousreply 89January 12, 2022 4:56 PM

r87/r88 the world changes. People move on from old tech and adopt new tech. Younger generations have to keep up, unlike older generations who are no longer part of the working world and don't really participate in society anymore.

by Anonymousreply 90January 12, 2022 4:57 PM

r90 Part of keeping up is not becoming lazy on the new and neglecting the old. 'lest they become as helpless and useless as the geezers

by Anonymousreply 91January 12, 2022 5:33 PM

[quote] People move on from old tech and adopt new tech.

Is the ability to do sums in one’s head ‘old tech’? Is innumeracy among young workers the new technology that at awaits us?

by Anonymousreply 92January 12, 2022 5:47 PM

Lots of people suck at math. It's been that way forever. I recently saw an interview with Fran Lebowitz and she said she can barely do simple addition and subtraction in her head, and she's hopeless at anything else.

by Anonymousreply 93January 12, 2022 6:57 PM

Why not Barbara Jordan?

by Anonymousreply 94January 12, 2022 7:00 PM

Barbara Jordan would've been a good choice. She was one fierce dyke!

by Anonymousreply 95January 12, 2022 7:04 PM

I remember studying Jordan in grade school. She was very accomished and broke a lot of barriers for her time. Sadly, largely forgotten now.

by Anonymousreply 96January 12, 2022 7:06 PM

I'd rather have the MABEL KING quarter in circulation. Raising Rog and Dee as an OBESE SINGLE woman was a major accomplishment.

by Anonymousreply 109January 13, 2022 2:57 AM

r53's clip made me think of Chris Farley as Matt Foley - "well la-di-frickin-DA!"

by Anonymousreply 111January 13, 2022 4:52 AM

Maya wandered into my art gallery once. She was so extraordinary that I closed and ordered us lunch. Three hours later we were still chatting. I have met and known some amazing people but she was really something special.

She sent me a box with her books with a lovely note I framed. Truly remarkable person.

by Anonymousreply 112January 13, 2022 6:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 119January 13, 2022 5:13 PM

I remember comedian Drew Droege (sp?) had a bit in which he tore her to shreds, claiming her to be a name-dropping hypocrite and a generally unpleasant person. While I like Angelou's work generally, I appreciated his candor in discussing his perspective of her (he was a student or assistant of hers or something).

by Anonymousreply 120January 13, 2022 5:33 PM

I read a magazine article discussing her like that too, r120. No doubt she had some insufferable moments.

This is the comedian Drew Droege's account of taking a class with her at Wake Forest University in NC, where he was an undergraduate, and being disillusioned by her pretentiousness and snobbery. It's from Jonny McGovern's talk show.

The relevant part starts at 2:10. Droege (whose haircut here is indefensible) is best known for doing the hilarious impersonations of Chloe Sevigny on clips you can find on youtube.

I always thought it was fascinating how many black and mixed-race comedians did imitations of her. Probably my favorite of all is this one by Tracey Morgan on SNL ("It's my favorite...").

Obviously her pompous demeanor was considered ridiculous by many in the black community while she was alive.

Why give a quarter to her when she had fame, fortune, and accolade. Which is fine, she has put out work people find powerful, Why not use a historical black women who contributed to America when there was no love, no Miss Angeleou, when she was just trying to freedom fight or do the right thing.
