Did you get today’s word?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 11, 2022 1:52 AM |
I did. In four. How can something so simple and seldom take you hostage?! LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 11, 2022 1:57 AM |
I’m hooked but also annoyed that you only get one play a day.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 11, 2022 1:59 AM |
^ Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 11, 2022 2:00 AM |
Got it in four tries! Now I want to do it more... And more than once a day.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 11, 2022 2:02 AM |
Do you want a hack to make it easier?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 11, 2022 2:05 AM |
The hack... words with five letters and multiple vowels.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 11, 2022 2:10 AM |
I'm hooked, but disappointed only one play every 24 hours.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 11, 2022 2:44 AM |
I’m sure they will have a pay wall to play more often. I missed todays word.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 11, 2022 2:46 AM |
There are a few flaws in the set up. You should be able to enter a letter in whichever square youchoose, and not have to erase the whole word to start a new one.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 11, 2022 2:46 AM |
didn't get today's word. will try again tomorrow. thanks, OP!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 11, 2022 2:55 AM |
The guy who created Wordle wants no payment or reimbursement of any kind, choosing to keep it free of charge which is why he set it up on his own webpage. I can usually get the word in four tries, but I have a couple of friend who are like "Wow, today's word was REALLY difficult", making me doubt their vocabulary skills
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 11, 2022 2:56 AM |
Got it in three tries. Said I was iimpressive!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 11, 2022 3:05 AM |
LOL... still working from home so it's a start the day with coffee and Wordle thing. But now I know today's word is up and I'm fighting temptation.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 11, 2022 4:23 AM |
it says that new word will be posted in about 2 1/2 hours...
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 11, 2022 4:33 AM |
19 minutes...
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 11, 2022 6:40 AM |
Well NOW I am. Thanks a LOT, OP.
JK. I love you for showing me this.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 11, 2022 10:35 AM |
Completely hooked. Like others, wish I could play more than once a day. Maybe two or three times; any more than that and I'd be useless for anything else the rest of the day.
There is, however, an element of 'good guesses'. I've gotten a few words in two only because I had two or three letters and maybe one or two in the right square. From there I just "guessed" the next one correctly; it wasn't tactically brilliant.
My partner, who is also hooked, plays every day as well and we compare what we've done and why.
He's also hooked on the NYT 'Spelling Bee' and every day we each try to get the Pangram. That's as far as I go; I don't have the patience to find 25 or 30 other words.
Great fun in these crazy times.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 11, 2022 11:05 AM |
Four again this morning.... It is such simple fun. I guess that makes me a simple man after all!

by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 11, 2022 1:36 PM |
Four tries today. I’ve got it every time except the very first time I played.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 11, 2022 1:42 PM |
Four tries today. My first time. Can't wait to try again tomorrow.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 11, 2022 2:39 PM |
Probably lucky guess R27. I always start with the same word which contained 2 of the answer, one in the correct place. The answer (or my guess for it) just popped into my head while looking at it.

R72, It's possible to have a contrary opinion and keep it to yourself when it doesn't change anything and doesn't matter. I fail to see what doing otherwise achieves, except feeding some need to be sour and get attention.

by Anonymous | reply 81 | January 12, 2022 12:24 PM |
There is actually an app which is virtually identical - but - the creator in their wisdom has put an ad over the bottom row of the keyboard, making it inoperable. That one could be played over and over if they only got rid of that irritating ad, which I couldn’t do. I deleted it.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 12, 2022 12:26 PM |
i've been starting with the same word each time that i seem to get a good result with (not sharing). Seems to work well for me, got today's in 2 tries.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | January 12, 2022 12:32 PM |
First time, 3 tries. So it's always going to be a 5 letter word? Wonder if it would get boring pretty quick.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 12, 2022 12:39 PM |
The fact that it’s a fairly simple game and you can only play once per day is what stops it from being boring for me. Smart design.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | January 12, 2022 12:40 PM |
On the copycat version linked upthread, you can 1) play more than once a day and 2) you can change the word length.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | January 12, 2022 12:42 PM |
I've been playing the copycat version for too long today. I need to get a grip.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 12, 2022 12:48 PM |
lol that was me yesterday r87
by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 12, 2022 12:52 PM |
For me that's the beauty of the original, R87... one and done or I'd be at it all day too. Today was spoiled for me because the word was revealed by The Times due to global freak outs over the spelling... they used the American spelling of the word, which, of course, wasn't intuitive to any country that uses British spelling. The inventor is Welsh, living in NYC. Nothing's ever simple. (I wonder, if you study English in France or Spain or China, which version of English they teach?) I was pissed off at The Times. They could have told the story without blowing up the word. Anyway, I bet it will be long time before they use a word with that combination of letters again.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 12, 2022 12:53 PM |
I like the clean design of the original and the one per day limit. Don’t need another thing to binge on.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 12, 2022 1:06 PM |
HEAD'S - UP
There's no way OP's post wasn't a shill/marketing post. It fucking happens here more and more. This one is too obvious. I'm a copywriter, I have never heard of this service and over the last 72 hours, people on Facebook and my Twitter feed, and one on Instagram have all been asking "what's this Wordle thing I've been hearing about?"
No way that's a coincidence. The Datalounge doesn't just have politically paid shills here, (like the ones who keep posting the Trump investigation stuff and parroting daily DNC talking points. ....not that I don't support the news behind those messages), but with the deluge of women, trans/queer kids and the over-60 crowd who have found and settled the site in recent years, we've had more and more of these types of threads. When you've been around here 20 years, you tend to know. This thread is one of them.
So, dismiss everything you've read here about this site/product whatever it is. It's a plant.

What color is it if the same letter appears twice.
Like let's say the word is razor. If you try rants, the "r" would be correct but also "incorrect"
by Anonymous | reply 95 | January 12, 2022 1:14 PM |
I havent seen it mark anything different if the same letter is used twice in the word

r96
So it lies and throws you off.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | January 12, 2022 1:26 PM |
R95 it only shows the letter once for each time you guess it, so if a word uses the same letter twice, you have to input it twice for both to show. The first time I played, the word had one letter twice. It threw me off as I was expecting both to show up from me guessing it once. Hope I explained this correctly.
R91 needs to get out for some fresh air. No one is sending paid shills to datalounge to promote a game that isn’t making the creator any money. I know people who have been paying this for weeks.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | January 12, 2022 2:07 PM |
What a quick little fix. I played yesterday and got the word on my second try. I played today and got it on the third try. Its strange, but it makes you feel like you're opening your mind to the universe and a word just pops in.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | January 12, 2022 2:11 PM |
The guy in R104’s article is a real gem. A shining example of why people hate the tech industry.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | January 12, 2022 2:14 PM |
Who really cares if OP posted about this game in order to promote it? It doesn't install malware and it's fun, so I'm glad to know about it.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | January 12, 2022 2:15 PM |
I did nothing of the kind. It was just fun. Occasionally something just nice happens and for once on here it happened from me.
I don't really care what some bitter type like R91 says except that lately I am starting to care more about how cynical and suspicious and divided we all are, everywhere, not just here. So I pushed back to clarify, I am not some shill. Sometimes what you see is only what you're seeing and there's no motivation except I thought it was fun. And I am glad most others do too.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | January 12, 2022 2:19 PM |
The creator hasn’t monetized it, so there is nothing to promote. That’s what makes R91’s post so laughable.
BTW after getting it on the second guess yesterday, it took me all 6 tries today and I had the second and last two letters in their correct spots on my 3rd guess.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | January 12, 2022 2:21 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 112 | January 12, 2022 2:58 PM |
^ I use British spelling but you have to be conscious of the fact that, when you're doing things like this, most will use American spelling by default.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | January 12, 2022 3:01 PM |
I don't understand why people are angry. The British spelling of the word is 6 letters so it wouldn't work in the context of the game.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | January 12, 2022 3:05 PM |
I think that's their point; the word wouldn't have occurred to them so naturally as an option as it would to Americans.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | January 12, 2022 3:09 PM |
So does that mean the guy who created it (who is from Wales but lives in Brooklyn) should have removed any word that is spelled different in the two countries? He created it for is partner, it wasn't intended to go viral like it has. People should save their outrage for something that matters.

by Anonymous | reply 118 | January 12, 2022 3:40 PM |
It did throw me off for a bit. Logically, the word I had in mind seemed to be the best bet. I am also aware the creator is a Brit, but didn't know he lived in NYC. I questioned whether he would use the american spelling. But I went with it because few other words made sense based on my first two guesses.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 12, 2022 3:53 PM |
Guessed it in three tries but it took me awhile. I'm not good at word games and sometimes it comes to me by not thinking about it rather than sitting there racking my brain to solve the puzzle.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 12, 2022 4:05 PM |
Wordle is such a simple idea and it is really bringing people together - people discussing their strategies, what words they use to start with, how their brains work differently.
Although I did see an argument between two academic men over what word is most effective to start with, whether vowels or the most common consonants are the most useful to work out the word.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 12, 2022 5:14 PM |
R121, I read something like that in The Times this morning, ranking vowels vs. common consonants, vs. frequency of position of a letter within a specific word, drawing in the Official Scrabble dictionary. It was fascinating and entertaining for how the wild fire spread. I do use a couple words to start the process now: audio, adieu or, sometimes, skate. It kills a bit of the luck buzz but ups the challenge of sorting out the clues.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 12, 2022 5:19 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 13, 2022 2:05 PM |
I got it in 3 tries, but the break between #2 and #3 took forever. Then I remembered the posts about repeating letters. The annoying thing is I got 3 letters on the first try. They were yellow and I used them in the same spots for #2 because I forgot that yellow means the letters are right but in the wrong places. I felt like such an idiot, wasting an attempt.

Also a reminder to not read this thread until I complete the day's puzzle. Don't want any hints shared wittingly or unwittingly. I'm doing them in the morning on the east coast.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 13, 2022 2:12 PM |
I did the trick where you use a high vowel first word and then sacrifice what you got right with an alternate vowels or common consonant second word, hoping to nail it in three. It didn't really help but I think that is more down to the actual word today than the process.
R160, me too. I get up, get my coffee, feel glum and sour and then I remember: Wordle! And I perk right up. It's the jolt I need to face my early January pandemic day.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | January 13, 2022 2:15 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 176 | January 14, 2022 12:40 PM |
ALIEN is another good word to use for the first guess. You use most of the vowels and two common consonants.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | January 14, 2022 2:17 PM |
Today was a tough. I got stuck with the first 3 letters right. I just couldn't come up legit words to even be wrong. Once the 4th letter came, then it was a matter of 2 tries to get the 5th letter.
I was ready to quit and come here to lament.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | January 14, 2022 2:34 PM |
ALIEN is a very good word.
Seems outside the vowels the most commonly appearing consonants are R, T, N, S, L, and C. I another source that said RETSINA (which wouldn't work in Wordle) also nails the most frequently occurring letters.
So ALIEN has everything but the T in retsina. STORY might be a good second word - gets you the O & the Y and uses the T. I play a strategy now of a high vowel first entry and then a consonant killer for the second word, hoping if an answer doesn't emerge I can get it in three with reason and process of elimination.
And on that note I note I didn't get it in six this morning despite everything!
by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 14, 2022 2:56 PM |
The best thing I do is write the alphabet on a pad, cross out eliminated letters and write potential solutions. I’m also really strategic with consonants.
I usually complete in in 2 or 3 attempts.

by Anonymous | reply 181 | January 14, 2022 4:06 PM |
Good alternative to NYT Spelling Bee -- he's been annoying me lately with what he decides is and isn't an actual word.
If you do word puzzles a lot Wordle isn't all that hard, though I almost screwed up the first time because I didn't realize the answer wasn't always five unique letters, e.g., that you could have a word like "Tatty"
by Anonymous | reply 182 | January 14, 2022 4:47 PM |
I use IOTAS as my first word. Then depending on what I get, I work in E, U, R, and N.

I was on the last line today (Jan. 14) and entered a legitimate, fairly common word that used my four correct letters in the correct boxes, but my word was not Wordle's word. So I lost. I'm not mad about it, but shouldn't there only be ONE correct answer? Or isn't that possible, given the format of the game?
by Anonymous | reply 188 | January 14, 2022 6:12 PM |

^ You'll hit your stride, R191. I know it can be hard to play around with strategies when you're limited to one go a day, but just take your time (as many here seem to do) and maybe think about some of the strategies people have mentioned upthread (e.g. vowel-heavy first word, consonant-heavy second word).
by Anonymous | reply 192 | January 14, 2022 6:41 PM |
Yes to R192, and remember that even though the "N" turned up green as the second letter, it can also be the fifth letter too.

[quote] Uh, [R168]? You know it's not midnight everywhere, right?
You’re an idiot. You do realize the game resets at midnight with a new word, right? If you solve your puzzle at 12:00 or 12:01, you do not get the next puzzle and have to wait a whole OTHER 24 hours. I solved 1/13’s puzzle at midnight and did not get today’s 1/14 puzzle. It said I have to wait 24 hours until I get another puzzle.
So basically I’m going from 1/13 to 1/15. It’s a glitch in the system. Try it tonight. Keep your puzzle open and solve it after midnight. Then you have to skip a day without playing.

r258. I thought the same. For me as non native speaker it was a desperate attempt, because there was no other legit word I could find matching the three letters I already got. I was really surprised, that I was right.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | January 17, 2022 3:26 PM |
Maybe it was a make good for the great international outrage over using the American spelling of favor.
So far as I am concerned, if it qualifies for Scrabble (and today's word does) fair play to Wordle.

r275 After you read all our hints probably...
by Anonymous | reply 276 | January 17, 2022 6:23 PM |
You would think right. But by sheer luck, my 1st word was OST composer of aforementioned's movie adaptations
by Anonymous | reply 277 | January 17, 2022 7:20 PM |
So which is more important: having a long winning streak, or consistently winning after 2-3 tries instead of 5-6?
by Anonymous | reply 278 | January 17, 2022 9:48 PM |
I think a long winning streak. There's so much random in working out the puzzle... you may or may not pump in a word that gains you any ground in terms of valuable letters. It isn't like it's timed. And funnily after an easy start I don't say it's difficult but it isn't a snap every time, either.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | January 17, 2022 9:54 PM |
The newest is really a hard thing.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | January 17, 2022 10:10 PM |
I've occasionally gotten it on the 3rd try and a couple of times it took me 5 tries. But the 4th try is my sweet spot. I almost always get it on the 4th try. I usually waste my first two attempts with ALIEN and ROUST trying to get the vowels and common consonants. I think I'll try a different strategy tomorrow to see if that improves my chances.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | January 17, 2022 10:21 PM |
I always start with WHORE and COCKS.

Can you only do one a day?
by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 17, 2022 11:53 PM |
R286, I needed one word as the clue. My second word was the correct answer. Nobody is ever going to randomly write down the day's word in the top line. But one or two, pretty cool, I think.
Yes, r288.

Today’s is a tough one.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | January 18, 2022 4:13 AM |
Given the nature of the game, I don't see why one day's puzzle would be tougher than another's. Unless the answer is a word that's obscure or even unknown to most people?
by Anonymous | reply 300 | January 18, 2022 4:50 AM |
Today I cut it close...took 5 tries.
I would say today's is harder than usual because it's a word that would garner high points in Scrabble. The previous few had a few vowels and "common" consonants.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | January 18, 2022 5:41 AM |
No hints, r301! Why did you post that?

by Anonymous | reply 316 | January 18, 2022 6:16 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 317 | January 18, 2022 6:36 PM |
This is why starting with ADIEU is a good idea. It instantly places or rules out four of the five vowels. For today, it tells you that (or at least implies) that you’re stuck with O and either Y or a three consonant cluster, like TCH.
by Anonymous | reply 318 | January 18, 2022 6:39 PM |
today was my 15th puzzle and the first one that I didn't get. I had most of the letters by the 3rd attempt but there were just too many words that could be made with them.

1/19 = Line 3 correct! With 1 letter from Line 1, that in the right spot. (Line 2 just eliminated 4 more letters.)
(I considered the correct word for Line 2, but chose another, obviously.)
by Anonymous | reply 330 | January 19, 2022 10:42 AM |
On third try (first try counts, kiddos).
by Anonymous | reply 331 | January 19, 2022 11:32 AM |
Everybody said yesterday's was hard, and everyone's saying today's is easy. But I got both in 4 tries. I didn't think today's was that easy, but then again, I took somebody's advice and started with "adieu," which threw me way the hell off by not giving me any leads on the consonants. Never again.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | January 19, 2022 11:41 AM |
r332. It works, your second guess should in this case then be a word without the vowels from ADIEU which contains four consonants and the missing vowel. So I got it with three.
I'll tell you tomorrow, how I did it.

Before he closes up shop, I hope he makes a 6 letter wordle. I've played 12 times now and I'm ready to move on. Yes, I know there are variations out there. I just prefer that wordle is once a day and everyone plays the same word.

Holy shit. Today's took 6 tries and honestly, I stumbled into the answer.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | January 24, 2022 10:24 AM |
Third try -- "impressive", it says! Process of elimination works, there are only 5 vowels in the English language and only 26 letters in the alphabet -- it also helps to have a vocabulary large enough to suggest a potentially correct answer using an unlikely combination. As Sherlock Holmes pointed out: “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

In four today... I gotta say my letter identification words aren't really yielding much but by three I tend to be able to make a WAG and get it. To avoid spoiling will post my letter identification words (like the infamous audio or adieu to start) and curious if anybody has any better alternatives.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | January 24, 2022 11:28 AM |
r536, These word games also count "y" as a vowel.
But to continue your theme:
There are common consonant blends that begin words---cr, pr, st, dr, fl, etc. And then there are none: tx, qg, wj, md, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 539 | January 24, 2022 11:30 AM |
R538, Please DO NOT. 🤬
We don't WANT your "letter identification words"!
Just shutty and let us play the game without your hints or clues or "help"! NOBODY ASKED YOU!

R540, simmer down. I wasn't offering help I was asking for it once the day is largely done and the game played. We have had a number of discussions, more than just me - about starter words to get the process rolling. But if it's going to cause harm, I won't.
With those kinds of reactions, emoticons included, I don't doubt you need to do fine alone in all things. Jesus.

Four tries today. Once I have one or two letters I rarely guess especially greens, I work it through - okay some of it may be guess work but mostly deductive reasoning.
Also I sense he prefers nouns.
Y has always been recognized as a semi-vowel. Same with w - That's in English.

by Anonymous | reply 556 | January 25, 2022 1:15 AM |
R556! THANK YOU! I look forward to starting the "Hard" mode in about 90 minutes!
I want the extra challenge, which is that if you guess a word that has "good" letters, you must use those letters in your next guess. Sounds reasonable.
Wish you guys would try Queerdle. You'll get a kick out of it! "Runway" was a recent word.

Anyone else not really care about how many tries it takes them, as long as they get it? I always start with the same three words, and then don't really try to figure it out until the fourth.
This time I really should have gotten it on the fourth, but when I didn't immediately get it (kept trying to place the wrong letter second), I went ahead and entered another word to get myself some additional letters.

It turns out I’ve been playing in the hard mode this whole time, albeit with the toggle on easy mode. I’m not entirely sure why you’d do it any other way, though I guess you’d wipe out other letters pretty quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | January 25, 2022 1:09 PM |
R569, I don't understand your block configurations.
R570, What makes you think your toggle was haywire? One can't play both modes (I tried), so whence that conclusion?
by Anonymous | reply 571 | January 25, 2022 1:22 PM |
R571, if you mean the layout I didn't add returns. If you mean how it played out line by line, I often pump in couple different words just to see what gets caught in the net. So line two ignored what turned up in line one. Same process for line three. I was just stumped and having a bad Wordle.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | January 25, 2022 1:52 PM |
R556, I've been playing in hard mode even though I have the toggle set to easy. It never occurred to me to not use the letters I have gotten right. Guess I'm not an out of the box thinker.

[quote] What makes you think your toggle was haywire? One can't play both modes (I tried), so whence that conclusion?
No, I just meant, like r573, I was playing with the toggle on "easy mode" but using the "honor system" where I used all the letters and placements I’d previously found even though I didn’t have to.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | January 25, 2022 2:13 PM |
R574, But are you sure it's the same word? That's also what I thought was different, but maybe it is only the method of play.

[quote] Anyone else not really care about how many tries it takes them, as long as they get it?
Yeah, no one cares how many tries it takes. I purposely put in wrong words just to get additional letters. I guess those are wasted tries but who cares? I would much rather do that than sit there trying to it figure out without additional letters.
