Wordle

I just love that fucking thing. But it makes me yearn.

Did you get today’s word?

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2022 1:52 AM

I did. In four. How can something so simple and seldom take you hostage?! LOL.

by Anonymousreply 2January 11, 2022 1:57 AM

I’m hooked but also annoyed that you only get one play a day.

by Anonymousreply 3January 11, 2022 1:59 AM

^ Yes.

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2022 2:00 AM

Got it in four tries! Now I want to do it more... And more than once a day.

by Anonymousreply 5January 11, 2022 2:02 AM

Do you want a hack to make it easier?

by Anonymousreply 6January 11, 2022 2:05 AM

The hack... words with five letters and multiple vowels.

I’m sure they will have a pay wall to play more often. I missed todays word.

by Anonymousreply 10January 11, 2022 2:46 AM

There are a few flaws in the set up. You should be able to enter a letter in whichever square youchoose, and not have to erase the whole word to start a new one.

by Anonymousreply 11January 11, 2022 2:46 AM

didn't get today's word. will try again tomorrow. thanks, OP!

by Anonymousreply 12January 11, 2022 2:55 AM

The guy who created Wordle wants no payment or reimbursement of any kind, choosing to keep it free of charge which is why he set it up on his own webpage. I can usually get the word in four tries, but I have a couple of friend who are like "Wow, today's word was REALLY difficult", making me doubt their vocabulary skills

by Anonymousreply 13January 11, 2022 2:56 AM

Got it in three tries. Said I was iimpressive!

by Anonymousreply 14January 11, 2022 3:05 AM

LOL... still working from home so it's a start the day with coffee and Wordle thing. But now I know today's word is up and I'm fighting temptation.

by Anonymousreply 15January 11, 2022 4:23 AM

it says that new word will be posted in about 2 1/2 hours...

by Anonymousreply 16January 11, 2022 4:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 17January 11, 2022 6:40 AM

Well NOW I am. Thanks a LOT, OP.

JK. I love you for showing me this.

by Anonymousreply 18January 11, 2022 10:35 AM

Completely hooked. Like others, wish I could play more than once a day. Maybe two or three times; any more than that and I'd be useless for anything else the rest of the day.

There is, however, an element of 'good guesses'. I've gotten a few words in two only because I had two or three letters and maybe one or two in the right square. From there I just "guessed" the next one correctly; it wasn't tactically brilliant.

My partner, who is also hooked, plays every day as well and we compare what we've done and why.

He's also hooked on the NYT 'Spelling Bee' and every day we each try to get the Pangram. That's as far as I go; I don't have the patience to find 25 or 30 other words.

Great fun in these crazy times.

by Anonymousreply 19January 11, 2022 11:05 AM

Four again this morning.... It is such simple fun. I guess that makes me a simple man after all!

by Anonymousreply 20January 11, 2022 12:20 PM

Or simpleton, for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 21January 11, 2022 12:21 PM

I got it in four. First time playing.

by Anonymousreply 22January 11, 2022 12:44 PM

I got it in four tries. It was also my first time playing. I'm glad you can play it only once a day.

by Anonymousreply 23January 11, 2022 1:36 PM

Four tries today. I’ve got it every time except the very first time I played.

by Anonymousreply 24January 11, 2022 1:42 PM

Four tries today. My first time. Can't wait to try again tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 25January 11, 2022 2:35 PM

I got it in two today! 16 hours to go…

by Anonymousreply 26January 11, 2022 2:36 PM

^ You're goooood! How much was reason and how much was lucky guess?

by Anonymousreply 27January 11, 2022 2:39 PM

Probably lucky guess R27. I always start with the same word which contained 2 of the answer, one in the correct place. The answer (or my guess for it) just popped into my head while looking at it.

by Anonymousreply 28January 11, 2022 3:00 PM

^ It's possible to have simple fun and discuss tips without telling everyone how you did. I fail to see what that achieves, unless it's an especially easy/difficult one and people want to compare with others.

by Anonymousreply 72January 12, 2022 12:08 PM

R72, It's possible to have a contrary opinion and keep it to yourself when it doesn't change anything and doesn't matter. I fail to see what doing otherwise achieves, except feeding some need to be sour and get attention.

To those asking, your first guess is a crap shoot and you hope you at least get a letter to work with. I've been lucky so far.

by Anonymousreply 80January 12, 2022 12:21 PM

Will someone spoil today’s word? You can put a spoiler alert before the answer.

by Anonymousreply 81January 12, 2022 12:24 PM

There is actually an app which is virtually identical - but - the creator in their wisdom has put an ad over the bottom row of the keyboard, making it inoperable. That one could be played over and over if they only got rid of that irritating ad, which I couldn’t do. I deleted it.

by Anonymousreply 82January 12, 2022 12:26 PM

i've been starting with the same word each time that i seem to get a good result with (not sharing). Seems to work well for me, got today's in 2 tries.

by Anonymousreply 83January 12, 2022 12:32 PM

First time, 3 tries. So it's always going to be a 5 letter word? Wonder if it would get boring pretty quick.

by Anonymousreply 84January 12, 2022 12:39 PM

The fact that it’s a fairly simple game and you can only play once per day is what stops it from being boring for me. Smart design.

by Anonymousreply 85January 12, 2022 12:40 PM

On the copycat version linked upthread, you can 1) play more than once a day and 2) you can change the word length.

by Anonymousreply 86January 12, 2022 12:42 PM

I've been playing the copycat version for too long today. I need to get a grip.

by Anonymousreply 87January 12, 2022 12:48 PM

lol that was me yesterday r87

by Anonymousreply 88January 12, 2022 12:52 PM

For me that's the beauty of the original, R87... one and done or I'd be at it all day too. Today was spoiled for me because the word was revealed by The Times due to global freak outs over the spelling... they used the American spelling of the word, which, of course, wasn't intuitive to any country that uses British spelling. The inventor is Welsh, living in NYC. Nothing's ever simple. (I wonder, if you study English in France or Spain or China, which version of English they teach?) I was pissed off at The Times. They could have told the story without blowing up the word. Anyway, I bet it will be long time before they use a word with that combination of letters again.

by Anonymousreply 89January 12, 2022 12:53 PM

I like the clean design of the original and the one per day limit. Don’t need another thing to binge on.

by Anonymousreply 90January 12, 2022 1:06 PM

HEAD'S - UP

There's no way OP's post wasn't a shill/marketing post. It fucking happens here more and more. This one is too obvious. I'm a copywriter, I have never heard of this service and over the last 72 hours, people on Facebook and my Twitter feed, and one on Instagram have all been asking "what's this Wordle thing I've been hearing about?"

No way that's a coincidence. The Datalounge doesn't just have politically paid shills here, (like the ones who keep posting the Trump investigation stuff and parroting daily DNC talking points. ....not that I don't support the news behind those messages), but with the deluge of women, trans/queer kids and the over-60 crowd who have found and settled the site in recent years, we've had more and more of these types of threads. When you've been around here 20 years, you tend to know. This thread is one of them.

So, dismiss everything you've read here about this site/product whatever it is. It's a plant.

by Anonymousreply 91January 12, 2022 1:08 PM

I’ve been playing with my cousins since last week, when it was covered in the news (something like the NYT, not a “paid shill” service). Just because you’re behind the curve doesn’t make this post a plant.

by Anonymousreply 94January 12, 2022 1:12 PM

What color is it if the same letter appears twice.

Like let's say the word is razor. If you try rants, the "r" would be correct but also "incorrect"

by Anonymousreply 95January 12, 2022 1:14 PM

I havent seen it mark anything different if the same letter is used twice in the word

by Anonymousreply 96January 12, 2022 1:17 PM

r96

So it lies and throws you off.

by Anonymousreply 97January 12, 2022 1:26 PM

R95 it only shows the letter once for each time you guess it, so if a word uses the same letter twice, you have to input it twice for both to show. The first time I played, the word had one letter twice. It threw me off as I was expecting both to show up from me guessing it once. Hope I explained this correctly.

R91 needs to get out for some fresh air. No one is sending paid shills to datalounge to promote a game that isn’t making the creator any money. I know people who have been paying this for weeks.

by Anonymousreply 105January 12, 2022 2:11 PM

The guy in R104’s article is a real gem. A shining example of why people hate the tech industry.

by Anonymousreply 106January 12, 2022 2:14 PM

Who really cares if OP posted about this game in order to promote it? It doesn't install malware and it's fun, so I'm glad to know about it.

by Anonymousreply 107January 12, 2022 2:15 PM

I did nothing of the kind. It was just fun. Occasionally something just nice happens and for once on here it happened from me.

I don't really care what some bitter type like R91 says except that lately I am starting to care more about how cynical and suspicious and divided we all are, everywhere, not just here. So I pushed back to clarify, I am not some shill. Sometimes what you see is only what you're seeing and there's no motivation except I thought it was fun. And I am glad most others do too.

by Anonymousreply 108January 12, 2022 2:19 PM

The creator hasn’t monetized it, so there is nothing to promote. That’s what makes R91’s post so laughable.

BTW after getting it on the second guess yesterday, it took me all 6 tries today and I had the second and last two letters in their correct spots on my 3rd guess.

by Anonymousreply 109January 12, 2022 2:21 PM

And I'm glad you sent it our way, OP/R108. I've enjoyed it on the two occasions I've done it.

by Anonymousreply 110January 12, 2022 2:32 PM

I got it in 4. Go me!

by Anonymousreply 111January 12, 2022 2:37 PM

FYI - this is currently trending worldwide because of today's word. Brits are angry with the spelling.

by Anonymousreply 112January 12, 2022 2:58 PM

^ I use British spelling but you have to be conscious of the fact that, when you're doing things like this, most will use American spelling by default.

by Anonymousreply 113January 12, 2022 3:01 PM

I don't understand why people are angry. The British spelling of the word is 6 letters so it wouldn't work in the context of the game.

by Anonymousreply 114January 12, 2022 3:05 PM

I think that's their point; the word wouldn't have occurred to them so naturally as an option as it would to Americans.

by Anonymousreply 115January 12, 2022 3:09 PM

So does that mean the guy who created it (who is from Wales but lives in Brooklyn) should have removed any word that is spelled different in the two countries? He created it for is partner, it wasn't intended to go viral like it has. People should save their outrage for something that matters.

by Anonymousreply 116January 12, 2022 3:35 PM

I think it's like any bug in tech.... sometimes you find out once it shows up. True it isn't a big deal, but social media is on the job anyway....

by Anonymousreply 117January 12, 2022 3:37 PM

For the record, I just made up “enby” and I’d like credit in the OED when it enters the lexicon.

by Anonymousreply 118January 12, 2022 3:40 PM

It did throw me off for a bit. Logically, the word I had in mind seemed to be the best bet. I am also aware the creator is a Brit, but didn't know he lived in NYC. I questioned whether he would use the american spelling. But I went with it because few other words made sense based on my first two guesses.

by Anonymousreply 119January 12, 2022 3:53 PM

Guessed it in three tries but it took me awhile. I'm not good at word games and sometimes it comes to me by not thinking about it rather than sitting there racking my brain to solve the puzzle.

by Anonymousreply 120January 12, 2022 4:05 PM

Wordle is such a simple idea and it is really bringing people together - people discussing their strategies, what words they use to start with, how their brains work differently.

Although I did see an argument between two academic men over what word is most effective to start with, whether vowels or the most common consonants are the most useful to work out the word.

by Anonymousreply 121January 12, 2022 5:14 PM

R121, I read something like that in The Times this morning, ranking vowels vs. common consonants, vs. frequency of position of a letter within a specific word, drawing in the Official Scrabble dictionary. It was fascinating and entertaining for how the wild fire spread. I do use a couple words to start the process now: audio, adieu or, sometimes, skate. It kills a bit of the luck buzz but ups the challenge of sorting out the clues.

by Anonymousreply 122January 12, 2022 5:19 PM

I had never heard of it before reading about it here last night. I didn't really get it at first and screwed up before I understood what was going on. Today, I got it in three!

Maybe it's good to just randomly type letters on the first two tries to get as many correct letters and then work from there.

by Anonymousreply 140January 12, 2022 8:04 PM

I believe it’s the same word for everyone, so it might be courteous not to talk or hint about the specific word given that we’re all in different time zones :-)

by Anonymousreply 150January 13, 2022 12:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 154January 13, 2022 12:47 PM

Got today's word in three tries - a personal best!

by Anonymousreply 155January 13, 2022 1:34 PM

SPOILERS . . . .

I didn't know letters can be repeated.

by Anonymousreply 156January 13, 2022 1:48 PM

No, you find that out the hard way!

by Anonymousreply 157January 13, 2022 1:58 PM

I'd forgotten that myself, R156, so it did take me that little bit longer today.

by Anonymousreply 158January 13, 2022 2:05 PM

I got it in 3 tries, but the break between #2 and #3 took forever. Then I remembered the posts about repeating letters. The annoying thing is I got 3 letters on the first try. They were yellow and I used them in the same spots for #2 because I forgot that yellow means the letters are right but in the wrong places. I felt like such an idiot, wasting an attempt.

by Anonymousreply 159January 13, 2022 2:08 PM

Also a reminder to not read this thread until I complete the day's puzzle. Don't want any hints shared wittingly or unwittingly. I'm doing them in the morning on the east coast.

by Anonymousreply 160January 13, 2022 2:12 PM

I did the trick where you use a high vowel first word and then sacrifice what you got right with an alternate vowels or common consonant second word, hoping to nail it in three. It didn't really help but I think that is more down to the actual word today than the process.

R160, me too. I get up, get my coffee, feel glum and sour and then I remember: Wordle! And I perk right up. It's the jolt I need to face my early January pandemic day.

by Anonymousreply 161January 13, 2022 2:15 PM

Today’s was tough. I had the first and 4th letters on my second try and it took me to 5 to figure out the word. I think today was more luck than anything.

by Anonymousreply 175January 14, 2022 12:38 PM

Dammit, I jinxed myself--I got in in 6 tries just now. In fairness though, I had 3 letters in place and there are lots of words with that combo.

by Anonymousreply 176January 14, 2022 12:40 PM

ALIEN is another good word to use for the first guess. You use most of the vowels and two common consonants.

by Anonymousreply 177January 14, 2022 2:17 PM

Today was a tough. I got stuck with the first 3 letters right. I just couldn't come up legit words to even be wrong. Once the 4th letter came, then it was a matter of 2 tries to get the 5th letter.

I was ready to quit and come here to lament.

by Anonymousreply 178January 14, 2022 2:34 PM

ALIEN is a very good word.

Seems outside the vowels the most commonly appearing consonants are R, T, N, S, L, and C. I another source that said RETSINA (which wouldn't work in Wordle) also nails the most frequently occurring letters.

So ALIEN has everything but the T in retsina. STORY might be a good second word - gets you the O & the Y and uses the T. I play a strategy now of a high vowel first entry and then a consonant killer for the second word, hoping if an answer doesn't emerge I can get it in three with reason and process of elimination.

And on that note I note I didn't get it in six this morning despite everything!

by Anonymousreply 179January 14, 2022 2:56 PM

The best thing I do is write the alphabet on a pad, cross out eliminated letters and write potential solutions. I’m also really strategic with consonants.

I usually complete in in 2 or 3 attempts.

by Anonymousreply 180January 14, 2022 3:01 PM

Got it on my third try today!!

by Anonymousreply 181January 14, 2022 4:06 PM

Good alternative to NYT Spelling Bee -- he's been annoying me lately with what he decides is and isn't an actual word.

If you do word puzzles a lot Wordle isn't all that hard, though I almost screwed up the first time because I didn't realize the answer wasn't always five unique letters, e.g., that you could have a word like "Tatty"

by Anonymousreply 182January 14, 2022 4:47 PM

I use IOTAS as my first word. Then depending on what I get, I work in E, U, R, and N.

by Anonymousreply 183January 14, 2022 5:06 PM

Can the word be a plural?

by Anonymousreply 184January 14, 2022 5:30 PM

yes it can

by Anonymousreply 185January 14, 2022 5:35 PM

Thanks, OP. I'm hooked.

by Anonymousreply 186January 14, 2022 5:40 PM

Yep, I’m in the Wordle Kaffeeklatsch. With my first cup. Thanks, horz.

by Anonymousreply 187January 14, 2022 6:02 PM

I was on the last line today (Jan. 14) and entered a legitimate, fairly common word that used my four correct letters in the correct boxes, but my word was not Wordle's word. So I lost. I'm not mad about it, but shouldn't there only be ONE correct answer? Or isn't that possible, given the format of the game?

by Anonymousreply 188January 14, 2022 6:12 PM

What about the fifth letter?

by Anonymousreply 189January 14, 2022 6:16 PM

I got today's on the second round

by Anonymousreply 190January 14, 2022 6:16 PM

I must be a moron. No luck.

by Anonymousreply 191January 14, 2022 6:38 PM

^ You'll hit your stride, R191. I know it can be hard to play around with strategies when you're limited to one go a day, but just take your time (as many here seem to do) and maybe think about some of the strategies people have mentioned upthread (e.g. vowel-heavy first word, consonant-heavy second word).

by Anonymousreply 192January 14, 2022 6:41 PM

Yes to R192, and remember that even though the "N" turned up green as the second letter, it can also be the fifth letter too.

by Anonymousreply 193January 14, 2022 7:12 PM

Geez I'm completely stuck, I got 4 correct letters in the wrong space. I feel stupid.

by Anonymousreply 194January 14, 2022 8:49 PM

[quote] Uh, [R168]? You know it's not midnight everywhere, right?

You’re an idiot. You do realize the game resets at midnight with a new word, right? If you solve your puzzle at 12:00 or 12:01, you do not get the next puzzle and have to wait a whole OTHER 24 hours. I solved 1/13’s puzzle at midnight and did not get today’s 1/14 puzzle. It said I have to wait 24 hours until I get another puzzle.

So basically I’m going from 1/13 to 1/15. It’s a glitch in the system. Try it tonight. Keep your puzzle open and solve it after midnight. Then you have to skip a day without playing.

I got this one in four, but honestly if you aren't British (or a fan of a certain franchise) would you even know what this word was?

by Anonymousreply 258January 17, 2022 12:51 PM

Being a J.R.R. fan, I got it in 2 attempts

by Anonymousreply 275January 17, 2022 4:17 PM

r275 After you read all our hints probably...

by Anonymousreply 276January 17, 2022 6:23 PM

You would think right. But by sheer luck, my 1st word was OST composer of aforementioned's movie adaptations

by Anonymousreply 277January 17, 2022 7:20 PM

So which is more important: having a long winning streak, or consistently winning after 2-3 tries instead of 5-6?

by Anonymousreply 278January 17, 2022 9:48 PM

I think a long winning streak. There's so much random in working out the puzzle... you may or may not pump in a word that gains you any ground in terms of valuable letters. It isn't like it's timed. And funnily after an easy start I don't say it's difficult but it isn't a snap every time, either.

by Anonymousreply 279January 17, 2022 9:54 PM

The newest is really a hard thing.

by Anonymousreply 280January 17, 2022 10:10 PM

I've occasionally gotten it on the 3rd try and a couple of times it took me 5 tries. But the 4th try is my sweet spot. I almost always get it on the 4th try. I usually waste my first two attempts with ALIEN and ROUST trying to get the vowels and common consonants. I think I'll try a different strategy tomorrow to see if that improves my chances.

by Anonymousreply 281January 17, 2022 10:21 PM

I always start with WHORE and COCKS.

by Anonymousreply 282January 17, 2022 11:02 PM

r282. What a waste of letters.

by Anonymousreply 283January 17, 2022 11:15 PM

My third word is always PENIS or PUSSY to use up those vowels.

by Anonymousreply 284January 17, 2022 11:21 PM

R233, for 1/17:

Solved in ONE!

Had three letters with initial word, one of them in the correct place.

by Anonymousreply 285January 17, 2022 11:44 PM

You mean solved in two.

by Anonymousreply 286January 17, 2022 11:47 PM

I solved it in six on my first try at playing this game. Does that mean I'm a genius?

by Anonymousreply 287January 17, 2022 11:52 PM

Can you only do one a day?

by Anonymousreply 288January 17, 2022 11:53 PM

R286, I needed one word as the clue. My second word was the correct answer. Nobody is ever going to randomly write down the day's word in the top line. But one or two, pretty cool, I think.

Yes, r288.

by Anonymousreply 289January 17, 2022 11:58 PM

^^ I got it on the FIRST word a few weeks ago — dumb luck, but there you go.

by Anonymousreply 290January 18, 2022 12:07 AM

I always get it on the first word.

by Anonymousreply 291January 18, 2022 12:08 AM

I usually start with LADEN. Lots of common letters in there.

by Anonymousreply 292January 18, 2022 12:09 AM

I start with my son’s name, JADEN.

by Anonymousreply 293January 18, 2022 12:11 AM

R288, see R30.

by Anonymousreply 294January 18, 2022 12:16 AM

I have no idea how I got todays in three. I don't think I even knew it was a word.

by Anonymousreply 295January 18, 2022 12:19 AM

Haha me too R295. I introduced this game yesterday to my brother and he got todays word in two tries. Not bad. I got it in three and had to google first to make sure it was a word.

by Anonymousreply 296January 18, 2022 12:25 AM

I would have had it in 2 but I was thinking beach instead of J.R.R.

by Anonymousreply 297January 18, 2022 12:37 AM

Stand corrected. Kudos, r290!

Sure, Jan, r291.

by Anonymousreply 298January 18, 2022 2:39 AM

Today’s is a tough one.

by Anonymousreply 299January 18, 2022 4:13 AM

Given the nature of the game, I don't see why one day's puzzle would be tougher than another's. Unless the answer is a word that's obscure or even unknown to most people?

by Anonymousreply 300January 18, 2022 4:50 AM

Today I cut it close...took 5 tries.

I would say today's is harder than usual because it's a word that would garner high points in Scrabble. The previous few had a few vowels and "common" consonants.

by Anonymousreply 301January 18, 2022 5:41 AM

No hints, r301! Why did you post that?

Now players who know Scrabble have a heads-up but less satisfaction in solving the puzzle. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 302January 18, 2022 9:39 AM

R302 here. Got it in Line 2 (I was pretty confident).

Would I have chosen my first word without r301?

No. So there you go.

Ugh, I didn't get todays. I got the first three letters on the second guess, but wasn't able to guess the correct word. Damn.

by Anonymousreply 305January 18, 2022 1:18 PM

It took me 4 tries.

by Anonymousreply 306January 18, 2022 1:33 PM

Five attempts. My first word didn't give me any letters.

by Anonymousreply 307January 18, 2022 1:47 PM

The solution was up far before 00.00 UTC at the website with the daily solution. I saw it by accident, what a disappointment. But anyway, I would have been not able to guess this word.

by Anonymousreply 308January 18, 2022 2:43 PM

Ooops, I was trying to explain to R300 how one day's word can vary in difficulty from another day's word....

by Anonymousreply 309January 18, 2022 2:44 PM

Does everyone get the same word each day?

As if by...proxy?

by Anonymousreply 310January 18, 2022 2:48 PM

I was quite stumped by the vowel situation but I did process of elimination after try three and did get it in four. Tricky one, though.

by Anonymousreply 311January 18, 2022 3:12 PM

r310. What part of NO HINTS did you miss?

And yes, it is the same word for everyone. It helps to read the complete thread anyway.

by Anonymousreply 312January 18, 2022 3:25 PM

I got it in three but admit that what the asshole above said influenced my first word.

by Anonymousreply 313January 18, 2022 5:17 PM

Read the thread after you complete the day's word. Simple solution.

It took me 6 tries today. Was a bit worried about the streak.

by Anonymousreply 314January 18, 2022 6:09 PM

First time I got zero letters in my first guess. Got lucky with my 2nd and got it in 4.

by Anonymousreply 315January 18, 2022 6:11 PM

R314, Yes, I actually figured that out. Didn't realize at first.

by Anonymousreply 316January 18, 2022 6:16 PM

It took me every try today but I finally got it. I did not read this thread until after. The thing I like is you know it has to be solvable. You just have to try harder.

by Anonymousreply 317January 18, 2022 6:36 PM

This is why starting with ADIEU is a good idea. It instantly places or rules out four of the five vowels. For today, it tells you that (or at least implies) that you’re stuck with O and either Y or a three consonant cluster, like TCH.

by Anonymousreply 318January 18, 2022 6:39 PM

today was my 15th puzzle and the first one that I didn't get. I had most of the letters by the 3rd attempt but there were just too many words that could be made with them.

by Anonymousreply 319January 18, 2022 6:44 PM

I got it in 4 tries, but have been avoiding this thread til solve it

by Anonymousreply 320January 18, 2022 6:52 PM

I never check the thread until I've done it.

by Anonymousreply 321January 18, 2022 6:53 PM

What was today's word? Couldn't solve it

by Anonymousreply 322January 18, 2022 9:27 PM

My first one I got in three tries, the second and third in four—I'm getting worse.

by Anonymousreply 323January 18, 2022 9:30 PM

Today’s word was Turtle. 🐢

by Anonymousreply 324January 18, 2022 10:09 PM

I am proud, so really proud. Needed three as a non native speaker. Thanks to ADIEU and my secret second try. This is really great fun and makes your brain work.

Curious. How many of you are also second language speakers?

by Anonymousreply 325January 18, 2022 10:38 PM

r318. Thanks to you. It also works perfect for the German version I played today for the first time. Three strikes only!

by Anonymousreply 326January 18, 2022 11:01 PM

Today’s was hard. Had to use 6 tries. I guess no points for getting it on the first try.

by Anonymousreply 327January 19, 2022 7:09 AM

I got it in 5 tries this time, I couldn't figure out yesterday's word at all.

by Anonymousreply 328January 19, 2022 7:20 AM

Yesterday's words was PROXY.

I got today's in 3 tries, which has become my average.

by Anonymousreply 329January 19, 2022 10:33 AM

1/19 = Line 3 correct! With 1 letter from Line 1, that in the right spot. (Line 2 just eliminated 4 more letters.)

(I considered the correct word for Line 2, but chose another, obviously.)

by Anonymousreply 330January 19, 2022 10:42 AM

On third try (first try counts, kiddos).

by Anonymousreply 331January 19, 2022 11:32 AM

Everybody said yesterday's was hard, and everyone's saying today's is easy. But I got both in 4 tries. I didn't think today's was that easy, but then again, I took somebody's advice and started with "adieu," which threw me way the hell off by not giving me any leads on the consonants. Never again.

by Anonymousreply 332January 19, 2022 11:41 AM

r332. It works, your second guess should in this case then be a word without the vowels from ADIEU which contains four consonants and the missing vowel. So I got it with three.

I'll tell you tomorrow, how I did it.

by Anonymousreply 333January 19, 2022 11:56 AM

Exactly the same for me, R333!

by Anonymousreply 334January 19, 2022 11:59 AM

I started with ADIEU also. My 2nd word set it up for me.

by Anonymousreply 342January 19, 2022 12:37 PM

In all instances I prefer audio as my first word only because I find it easier to imagine/place an e just looking at the screen, though arguably the same logic applies to the u. Lately I've taken to writing out the alphabet on a scrap of paper and crossing out the used letters... I find cross checking that the word leaps out at me.

R416 yes, mother hen, don't worry, I won't bother you longer in your little thread. I hope you continue to enjoy it and my comments didn't shed the harsh light of reality on you for TOO long.

by Anonymousreply 418January 20, 2022 1:46 PM

I was magnificent today! I've gotten the word every time I played but never in 2 tries.

It would be great if he upped the ante with a six letter version. Anyone know enough math to figure how much harder adding an extra letter would be?

by Anonymousreply 419January 20, 2022 1:47 PM

Had to block the spoiler poster. I was more disappointed cheating than if I had failed to get the answer in 6 tries.

R418, don't be bitter. It'll spoil your magnificent looks.

by Anonymousreply 421January 20, 2022 2:04 PM

r393 is wrong to post like that but people wouldn't have picked up on it if r400 hadn't posted that it was a spoiler alert. So both are equally to blame.

LMAO. Today, Thursday, January 20, I got it on the second guess. This is the official Wordle site, not the clone.

How do you make those colored boxes? I am clearly better at words than I am at techie thingies.

by Anonymousreply 432January 20, 2022 5:52 PM

Can this guy sue all the clones, especially the ones that use the word “Wordle” like Hello Wordle or Wordle Unlimited.

by Anonymousreply 433January 20, 2022 5:54 PM

Sue for what? They all stole this from Buzz's Words. Unless there is some techie thingy that is unique to the game that for some reason they allow a copyright or patent to attach.

Like the NY Time Spelling Bee was stolen from Hang Man.

by Anonymousreply 437January 20, 2022 6:40 PM

Sue for using the name. It’s a play on his last name and they’re all capitalizing on it. They can call it something else without “Wordle” or “dle” in it.

by Anonymousreply 438January 20, 2022 6:45 PM

Queerdle might let you play late in the evening around last call. Before that it freezes and just sits there, waiting for a better player to come along.

by Anonymousreply 439January 20, 2022 6:56 PM

r446. As I type it is already 1.00 am in middle Europe. For me it shows after UTC plus one at my midnight. May be it depends on your longitude? The guys from Australia may answer the question.

by Anonymousreply 447January 20, 2022 11:03 PM

[quote] You can be sure that my spoiler is only a very small hint.

How about no hint at all? Can you do that? Or are you such an asshole you can't contain yourself?

by Anonymousreply 448January 20, 2022 11:07 PM

Why do you have to give a hint at all, R447? Why can't you let the rest of us follow this thread and play the game when it becomes available to us? Why must you suck the fun out of it for everyone?

by Anonymousreply 449January 20, 2022 11:07 PM

There's a block button for a reason. As soon as I saw he was giving a spoiler, I hit it. These people trying to spoil it can't be reasoned with. There's really no point trying.

by Anonymousreply 450January 20, 2022 11:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 489January 22, 2022 12:56 PM

With FOUR letters in place it took me 3 guesses to get the right word because there are so many with that combo.

What makes this game so enjoyable is that it is a good balance of strategy and luck.

by Anonymousreply 490January 22, 2022 1:19 PM

Took me to four today and three until I could discern a pattern. I think I may too impatient to sit and stare at the thing for long to get it in three without some real luck on the vowels in one and two.

by Anonymousreply 491January 22, 2022 2:04 PM

DL is home to some pretty sick tickets, obviously. But you are doomed in real life if there's something so wrong with you that spoiling this simple, silly game for people gives you some sensation of pleasure in a life with a need for compensation that can be met by that.

by Anonymousreply 492January 22, 2022 2:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 493January 22, 2022 3:47 PM

R493, I do find, when I do that, they tend to be sour pretty much everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 494January 22, 2022 4:06 PM

sometimes I will leave the puzzle for hours and come back and it is much easier to do. no rule that says it has to be done as soon as you open it and no timer. sometimes the brain works differently during the day.

by Anonymousreply 495January 22, 2022 4:20 PM

R495, that's one of the things I love most about the game. There's no reason to cheat or search for clues because there's 24 hours to solve a puzzle.

As for people like R482, keep in mind they have to spend time trying to solve the puzzle before running to DL to ruin it. That doesn't sound like the behavior of a person with a fulfilling life.

by Anonymousreply 496January 22, 2022 4:32 PM

It also sounds like an eight year old with lousy parents.

by Anonymousreply 535January 24, 2022 10:24 AM

Third try -- "impressive", it says! Process of elimination works, there are only 5 vowels in the English language and only 26 letters in the alphabet -- it also helps to have a vocabulary large enough to suggest a potentially correct answer using an unlikely combination. As Sherlock Holmes pointed out: “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

P S. I don't regard my post at r539 to be "help." I think it's just pointing out common knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 541January 24, 2022 11:38 AM

Today was a challenge. Got it, but it took all 6 tries this time.

by Anonymousreply 542January 24, 2022 11:53 AM

R540, simmer down. I wasn't offering help I was asking for it once the day is largely done and the game played. We have had a number of discussions, more than just me - about starter words to get the process rolling. But if it's going to cause harm, I won't.

With those kinds of reactions, emoticons included, I don't doubt you need to do fine alone in all things. Jesus.

by Anonymousreply 543January 24, 2022 12:09 PM

Ugh - took longer than usual but worth the time

Four attempts but #3 and 4 took forever. It's funny how once a word comes, you feel so idiotic for not seeing it much sooner. I've played 13 times and none of the words are new or obscure to me.

by Anonymousreply 546January 24, 2022 2:17 PM

Yea, that was not easy to guess. Glad I got it in 5.

by Anonymousreply 549January 24, 2022 4:01 PM

I'm waiting for the Hawaiian version that only uses 12 letters. It's gotta be a cinch, right?

by Anonymousreply 552January 24, 2022 6:44 PM

Four tries today. Once I have one or two letters I rarely guess especially greens, I work it through - okay some of it may be guess work but mostly deductive reasoning.

Also I sense he prefers nouns.

Y has always been recognized as a semi-vowel. Same with w - That's in English.

Thanks, R554! There's a 6 letter version at that site too. I was supposed to be working on tax stuff tomorrow, but . . .

by Anonymousreply 555January 25, 2022 1:01 AM

I wasn't aware that there is an 'easy' and 'hard' mode. I guess the default is 'easy'. One can get to 'hard' mode in the settings.

R556! THANK YOU! I look forward to starting the "Hard" mode in about 90 minutes!

I want the extra challenge, which is that if you guess a word that has "good" letters, you must use those letters in your next guess. Sounds reasonable.

Wish you guys would try Queerdle. You'll get a kick out of it! "Runway" was a recent word.

by Anonymousreply 557January 25, 2022 2:35 AM

I've got the last three days in three tries. I am addicted! I am glad that only one a day comes out.

by Anonymousreply 558January 25, 2022 2:36 AM

It's been taking me 6 tries lately, and that's on the easy mode. I think I'd fail the hard mode.

by Anonymousreply 559January 25, 2022 3:06 AM

Just got it on the 3rd attempt.

Definitely much easier than yesterday's word.

by Anonymousreply 560January 25, 2022 4:19 AM

Anyone else not really care about how many tries it takes them, as long as they get it? I always start with the same three words, and then don't really try to figure it out until the fourth.

This time I really should have gotten it on the fourth, but when I didn't immediately get it (kept trying to place the wrong letter second), I went ahead and entered another word to get myself some additional letters.

It turns out I’ve been playing in the hard mode this whole time, albeit with the toggle on easy mode. I’m not entirely sure why you’d do it any other way, though I guess you’d wipe out other letters pretty quickly.

by Anonymousreply 570January 25, 2022 1:09 PM

R569, I don't understand your block configurations.

R570, What makes you think your toggle was haywire? One can't play both modes (I tried), so whence that conclusion?

by Anonymousreply 571January 25, 2022 1:22 PM

R571, if you mean the layout I didn't add returns. If you mean how it played out line by line, I often pump in couple different words just to see what gets caught in the net. So line two ignored what turned up in line one. Same process for line three. I was just stumped and having a bad Wordle.

by Anonymousreply 572January 25, 2022 1:52 PM

R556, I've been playing in hard mode even though I have the toggle set to easy. It never occurred to me to not use the letters I have gotten right. Guess I'm not an out of the box thinker.

by Anonymousreply 573January 25, 2022 2:06 PM

[quote] What makes you think your toggle was haywire? One can't play both modes (I tried), so whence that conclusion?

No, I just meant, like r573, I was playing with the toggle on "easy mode" but using the "honor system" where I used all the letters and placements I’d previously found even though I didn’t have to.

by Anonymousreply 574January 25, 2022 2:13 PM

R574, But are you sure it's the same word? That's also what I thought was different, but maybe it is only the method of play.

by Anonymousreply 575January 25, 2022 2:19 PM

[quote] Anyone else not really care about how many tries it takes them, as long as they get it?

Yeah, no one cares how many tries it takes. I purposely put in wrong words just to get additional letters. I guess those are wasted tries but who cares? I would much rather do that than sit there trying to it figure out without additional letters.

by Anonymousreply 576January 25, 2022 6:11 PM

I was reading an article that said ROATE, not ADIEU, is the best word to start with to eliminate possibilities.

Anyone try it?

by Anonymousreply 577January 25, 2022 7:52 PM

I got it in two today.

by Anonymousreply 578January 25, 2022 7:53 PM

CREAM, BROKE, BRAIN are the words I usually start with. I'm 11 for 11 and usually get iT in 3 or 4 tries.

by Anonymousreply 581January 25, 2022 8:34 PM

R561, that's me exactly. I plug in my letter trawling words and then figure it out... I either nail it four or it takes all six. I never seem to settle on five often.

by Anonymousreply 582January 25, 2022 8:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 588January 26, 2022 9:29 AM

I didn't know there was a hard and easy mode. I just thought that if you get one or more greens in the first or second guess then it just makes sense to try five new letters for the next. But now I'm afraid to switch to hard.

by Anonymousreply 589January 26, 2022 11:57 AM
