There are a few flaws in the set up. You should be able to enter a letter in whichever square youchoose, and not have to erase the whole word to start a new one.

The guy who created Wordle wants no payment or reimbursement of any kind, choosing to keep it free of charge which is why he set it up on his own webpage. I can usually get the word in four tries, but I have a couple of friend who are like "Wow, today's word was REALLY difficult", making me doubt their vocabulary skills

Completely hooked. Like others, wish I could play more than once a day. Maybe two or three times; any more than that and I'd be useless for anything else the rest of the day.

There is, however, an element of 'good guesses'. I've gotten a few words in two only because I had two or three letters and maybe one or two in the right square. From there I just "guessed" the next one correctly; it wasn't tactically brilliant.

My partner, who is also hooked, plays every day as well and we compare what we've done and why.

He's also hooked on the NYT 'Spelling Bee' and every day we each try to get the Pangram. That's as far as I go; I don't have the patience to find 25 or 30 other words.

Great fun in these crazy times.

Probably lucky guess R27. I always start with the same word which contained 2 of the answer, one in the correct place. The answer (or my guess for it) just popped into my head while looking at it.

To those asking, your first guess is a crap shoot and you hope you at least get a letter to work with. I've been lucky so far.

There is actually an app which is virtually identical - but - the creator in their wisdom has put an ad over the bottom row of the keyboard, making it inoperable. That one could be played over and over if they only got rid of that irritating ad, which I couldn’t do. I deleted it.

i've been starting with the same word each time that i seem to get a good result with (not sharing). Seems to work well for me, got today's in 2 tries.

First time, 3 tries. So it's always going to be a 5 letter word? Wonder if it would get boring pretty quick.

The fact that it’s a fairly simple game and you can only play once per day is what stops it from being boring for me. Smart design.

On the copycat version linked upthread, you can 1) play more than once a day and 2) you can change the word length.

I've been playing the copycat version for too long today. I need to get a grip.

For me that's the beauty of the original, R87... one and done or I'd be at it all day too. Today was spoiled for me because the word was revealed by The Times due to global freak outs over the spelling... they used the American spelling of the word, which, of course, wasn't intuitive to any country that uses British spelling. The inventor is Welsh, living in NYC. Nothing's ever simple. (I wonder, if you study English in France or Spain or China, which version of English they teach?) I was pissed off at The Times. They could have told the story without blowing up the word. Anyway, I bet it will be long time before they use a word with that combination of letters again.

I like the clean design of the original and the one per day limit. Don’t need another thing to binge on.

I'm a copywriter, I have never heard of this service and over the last 72 hours, people on Facebook and my Twitter feed, and one on Instagram have all been asking "what's this Wordle thing I've been hearing about?"

No way that's a coincidence. The Datalounge doesn't just have politically paid shills here, (like the ones who keep posting the Trump investigation stuff and parroting daily DNC talking points. ....not that I don't support the news behind those messages), but with the deluge of women, trans/queer kids and the over-60 crowd who have found and settled the site in recent years, we've had more and more of these types of threads. When you've been around here 20 years, you tend to know. This thread is one of them.

R95 it only shows the letter once for each time you guess it, so if a word uses the same letter twice, you have to input it twice for both to show. The first time I played, the word had one letter twice. It threw me off as I was expecting both to show up from me guessing it once. Hope I explained this correctly.

What a quick little fix. I played yesterday and got the word on my second try. I played today and got it on the third try. Its strange, but it makes you feel like you're opening your mind to the universe and a word just pops in.

The guy in R104’s article is a real gem. A shining example of why people hate the tech industry.

Who really cares if OP posted about this game in order to promote it? It doesn't install malware and it's fun, so I'm glad to know about it.

I did nothing of the kind. It was just fun. Occasionally something just nice happens and for once on here it happened from me.

I don't really care what some bitter type like R91 says except that lately I am starting to care more about how cynical and suspicious and divided we all are, everywhere, not just here. So I pushed back to clarify, I am not some shill. Sometimes what you see is only what you're seeing and there's no motivation except I thought it was fun. And I am glad most others do too.

FYI - this is currently trending worldwide because of today's word. Brits are angry with the spelling.

^ I use British spelling but you have to be conscious of the fact that, when you're doing things like this, most will use American spelling by default.

I don't understand why people are angry. The British spelling of the word is 6 letters so it wouldn't work in the context of the game.

I think that's their point; the word wouldn't have occurred to them so naturally as an option as it would to Americans.

So does that mean the guy who created it (who is from Wales but lives in Brooklyn) should have removed any word that is spelled different in the two countries? He created it for is partner, it wasn't intended to go viral like it has. People should save their outrage for something that matters.

I think it's like any bug in tech.... sometimes you find out once it shows up. True it isn't a big deal, but social media is on the job anyway....

For the record, I just made up “enby” and I’d like credit in the OED when it enters the lexicon.

It did throw me off for a bit. Logically, the word I had in mind seemed to be the best bet. I am also aware the creator is a Brit, but didn't know he lived in NYC. I questioned whether he would use the american spelling. But I went with it because few other words made sense based on my first two guesses.

Guessed it in three tries but it took me awhile. I'm not good at word games and sometimes it comes to me by not thinking about it rather than sitting there racking my brain to solve the puzzle.

Wordle is such a simple idea and it is really bringing people together - people discussing their strategies, what words they use to start with, how their brains work differently.

Although I did see an argument between two academic men over what word is most effective to start with, whether vowels or the most common consonants are the most useful to work out the word.

R121, I read something like that in The Times this morning, ranking vowels vs. common consonants, vs. frequency of position of a letter within a specific word, drawing in the Official Scrabble dictionary. It was fascinating and entertaining for how the wild fire spread. I do use a couple words to start the process now: audio, adieu or, sometimes, skate. It kills a bit of the luck buzz but ups the challenge of sorting out the clues.

I had never heard of it before reading about it here last night. I didn't really get it at first and screwed up before I understood what was going on. Today, I got it in three!

I'd forgotten that myself, R156, so it did take me that little bit longer today.

I got it in 3 tries, but the break between #2 and #3 took forever. Then I remembered the posts about repeating letters. The annoying thing is I got 3 letters on the first try. They were yellow and I used them in the same spots for #2 because I forgot that yellow means the letters are right but in the wrong places. I felt like such an idiot, wasting an attempt.

Also a reminder to not read this thread until I complete the day's puzzle. Don't want any hints shared wittingly or unwittingly. I'm doing them in the morning on the east coast.

I did the trick where you use a high vowel first word and then sacrifice what you got right with an alternate vowels or common consonant second word, hoping to nail it in three. It didn't really help but I think that is more down to the actual word today than the process.

R160, me too. I get up, get my coffee, feel glum and sour and then I remember: Wordle! And I perk right up. It's the jolt I need to face my early January pandemic day.

Loving WORDLE but why do so many people feel compelled to post their daily game result on Facebook or Twitter? What do they want, a freaking cookie?

I just solved the puzzle at midnight thinking I could get the next day’s puzzle right after. But now it says I can’t play for 24 hours. WTF? Where is today’s puzzle? Why can’t I play?

I've been consistently guessing within 3-4 tries, but I'm having fun with the fact that I can play again on a different device and just enter the correct answer so that my stats on the second device look impossibly good. Still waiting for the friend I share the second stats with to figure it out. :)

Dammit, I jinxed myself--I got in in 6 tries just now. In fairness though, I had 3 letters in place and there are lots of words with that combo.

ALIEN is another good word to use for the first guess. You use most of the vowels and two common consonants.

Today was a tough. I got stuck with the first 3 letters right. I just couldn't come up legit words to even be wrong. Once the 4th letter came, then it was a matter of 2 tries to get the 5th letter.

I was ready to quit and come here to lament.

ALIEN is a very good word.

Seems outside the vowels the most commonly appearing consonants are R, T, N, S, L, and C. I another source that said RETSINA (which wouldn't work in Wordle) also nails the most frequently occurring letters.

So ALIEN has everything but the T in retsina. STORY might be a good second word - gets you the O & the Y and uses the T. I play a strategy now of a high vowel first entry and then a consonant killer for the second word, hoping if an answer doesn't emerge I can get it in three with reason and process of elimination.

And on that note I note I didn't get it in six this morning despite everything!

The best thing I do is write the alphabet on a pad, cross out eliminated letters and write potential solutions. I’m also really strategic with consonants.

I usually complete in in 2 or 3 attempts.

If you do word puzzles a lot Wordle isn't all that hard, though I almost screwed up the first time because I didn't realize the answer wasn't always five unique letters, e.g., that you could have a word like "Tatty"

I use IOTAS as my first word. Then depending on what I get, I work in E, U, R, and N.

I was on the last line today (Jan. 14) and entered a legitimate, fairly common word that used my four correct letters in the correct boxes, but my word was not Wordle's word. So I lost. I'm not mad about it, but shouldn't there only be ONE correct answer? Or isn't that possible, given the format of the game?

I know it can be hard to play around with strategies when you're limited to one go a day, but just take your time (as many here seem to do) and maybe think about some of the strategies people have mentioned upthread (e.g. vowel-heavy first word, consonant-heavy second word).

You’re an idiot. You do realize the game resets at midnight with a new word, right? If you solve your puzzle at 12:00 or 12:01, you do not get the next puzzle and have to wait a whole OTHER 24 hours. I solved 1/13’s puzzle at midnight and did not get today’s 1/14 puzzle. It said I have to wait 24 hours until I get another puzzle.

So basically I’m going from 1/13 to 1/15. It’s a glitch in the system. Try it tonight. Keep your puzzle open and solve it after midnight. Then you have to skip a day without playing.

Took six tries but I screwed up and didn't pay attention to my previous attempts.

I'd have had it in four but I had worked it out to two possible contenders at the third line and chose the wrong one for the fourth. Took me awhile to gain many useful letters on the way there though.

I got this one in four, but honestly if you aren't British (or a fan of a certain franchise) would you even know what this word was?

I get the colors mixed up and tend to treat yellow the same as green. Must be like dyslexia, but with colors instead of letters. One of my uncles was color blind, maybe something runs in my family.

Today was a breeze, 3 attempts, under a minute. There have been days when I'm grateful there isn't a time limit. That's when I get stuck and it takes me forever to even find a legit word that is wrong. He could add a layer of complexity to it with either a time limit or number of words entered per attempts. That would make it really difficult.

The first one I got in 6. I usually got it in fewer tries.

I think a long winning streak. There's so much random in working out the puzzle... you may or may not pump in a word that gains you any ground in terms of valuable letters. It isn't like it's timed. And funnily after an easy start I don't say it's difficult but it isn't a snap every time, either.

The newest is really a hard thing.

I've occasionally gotten it on the 3rd try and a couple of times it took me 5 tries. But the 4th try is my sweet spot. I almost always get it on the 4th try. I usually waste my first two attempts with ALIEN and ROUST trying to get the vowels and common consonants. I think I'll try a different strategy tomorrow to see if that improves my chances.

I always start with WHORE and COCKS.

It took me every try today but I finally got it. I did not read this thread until after. The thing I like is you know it has to be solvable. You just have to try harder.

This is why starting with ADIEU is a good idea. It instantly places or rules out four of the five vowels. For today, it tells you that (or at least implies) that you’re stuck with O and either Y or a three consonant cluster, like TCH.

r332. It works, your second guess should in this case then be a word without the vowels from ADIEU which contains four consonants and the missing vowel. So I got it with three.

Third for me. Wordle says that's "impressive" -- yesterday took me 4 tries, which was "splendid".

In all instances I prefer audio as my first word only because I find it easier to imagine/place an e just looking at the screen, though arguably the same logic applies to the u. Lately I've taken to writing out the alphabet on a scrap of paper and crossing out the used letters... I find cross checking that the word leaps out at me.

The trick is to find 5 words that each use a different vowel (a-e-i-o-u-) & has a variety of con. so you can unscramble the word in the last block.

It took me 4 tries today...one thing I avoid doing is guessing words I know aren't right just to reveal correct letters. However, after spending 15 minutes on today's puzzle I almost broke down.

Could not solve it for the first time. But as a non native speaker I just didn't know this expression.

I'm blocking everyone who gives hints. Sad to see so many jerks here -- it's not pointless bitchery, it's just being mean.

With FOUR letters in place it took me 3 guesses to get the right word because there are so many with that combo.

What makes this game so enjoyable is that it is a good balance of strategy and luck.

Took me to four today and three until I could discern a pattern. I think I may too impatient to sit and stare at the thing for long to get it in three without some real luck on the vowels in one and two.

DL is home to some pretty sick tickets, obviously. But you are doomed in real life if there's something so wrong with you that spoiling this simple, silly game for people gives you some sensation of pleasure in a life with a need for compensation that can be met by that.

R493, I do find, when I do that, they tend to be sour pretty much everywhere.

sometimes I will leave the puzzle for hours and come back and it is much easier to do. no rule that says it has to be done as soon as you open it and no timer. sometimes the brain works differently during the day.

R495, that's one of the things I love most about the game. There's no reason to cheat or search for clues because there's 24 hours to solve a puzzle.

As for people like R482, keep in mind they have to spend time trying to solve the puzzle before running to DL to ruin it. That doesn't sound like the behavior of a person with a fulfilling life.

Weirdly, the hardest one for me was WINCE a few days back, I think because I hadn’t had enough coffee yet. Took all my tries, got in just under the wire. But this one was tough, too.

Holy shit. Today's took 6 tries and honestly, I stumbled into the answer.

Third try -- "impressive", it says! Process of elimination works, there are only 5 vowels in the English language and only 26 letters in the alphabet -- it also helps to have a vocabulary large enough to suggest a potentially correct answer using an unlikely combination. As Sherlock Holmes pointed out: “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

It turns out I’ve been playing in the hard mode this whole time, albeit with the toggle on easy mode. I’m not entirely sure why you’d do it any other way, though I guess you’d wipe out other letters pretty quickly.

R571, if you mean the layout I didn't add returns. If you mean how it played out line by line, I often pump in couple different words just to see what gets caught in the net. So line two ignored what turned up in line one. Same process for line three. I was just stumped and having a bad Wordle.
