I watched some of the original Gossip Girl while it was airing. It was a nice trashy soap about horrible rich kids. I never minded it was all white kids because it was supposed to be the upper-class NYers who live a very segregated life from the rest of the city. I do agree that nowadays a lot of those private schools have Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern and African students, children of very wealthy immigrants. I may give this version a shot since DL seems to love it.

Episode 7 aka the Thanksgiving episode was superb. Lots of drama. And honestly lots of laughs during the party scenes. I found it a lot of fun having everyone under one roof together.

Love that Beck from YOU is on this and Ordinary Joe, staying booked.

Love that there were little subplots created during this episode.

Love that the trans character seems to have vanished.

Episode 7 has all the characters in it, even the secondary characters like all the parents, but trans girl was MIA. Did they fire her? Not even a mention of her.

It's absolutely not HBO Max's highest rated show. Certainly not in the second half of the season, which HBO dumped with little not no fanfare. Whatever buzz they tried to piggyback off the premiere and the original is long gone. The first 6 episodes were a snooze and now everybody has bailed.

I watched the first 6 episodes and with the exception of episode 3 or 4, I thought it was terrible and I really wanted to like it. I am/was hoping that they used the time of to retool and recast. It sounds like these newer episodes are better than the first 6. I've seen a few bus stop posters but no billboards or heavy promotion of this in LA. I'm encouraged by these reviews and will watch them over the weekend.

I think it was too early to reboot GG. The original only ended in 2012. Just like the sequel to How I Met Your Mother which came way too soon as well. It's like studios have no patience anymore and are just whoring out established properties for a cheap cash-in.

I agree with other posters that the Thanksgiving episode was great. But I'm a bit bummed that sexy teacher is gone.

For the other two episodes, I'm surprised how the show manages to make the #metoo scandal plot come from a different angle where the daughter is accused of helping her dad to cover it all up.

R18 this show is only on HBOmax so there are no traditional TV ratings, we only know what HBO chooses to release.

They did do a big PR release that the series premiere was the highest rated series premiere for HBOMax because it beat the Flight Attendant (see less impressive in context). But we know nothing about the numbers after that has HBOmax hasn't released any info. It must be doing okay given the season 2 renewal being quickly announced tho.

I doubt these schools are this diverse. Even today. Perhaps a few token minorities but mostly white.

But the school isn’t that diverse r49. Almost all the extras for the school are white. Pay attention. There’s a few others mixed but it’s still mostly white. This core group has minorities in it, LGBT folk etc.

Even the teachers are mostly white… so what is the issue. Some of you cry just to cry.

And yes, there was some black and Asian and Hispanic students at those type of schools in the 90s. Not many, but some. There are way more of them now than then. Welcome to 2021!

I don't think DL seems to love it at all r49, most of the comments about the first half of the season were pretty negative actually if you look through the watch thread. Hopefully second half will be better.

R51 episodes 7-9 are up and already better. Episode 7 alone was better than 1-6 combined.

What’s funny to me is this show is written and ran by the same people who did the original. The show is no worse than the original in any way yet people bitched how it sucked and was too different from the original.

So now for the second half the writers made the show have a similar vibe, pacing and crazy drama like the original, and it seems to be getting more positive feedback from both viewers and critics, however you still have some online now bitching these 3 episodes feel too similar to the OG show and unoriginal.

R52 It has little of the tongue-in-cheek humor of the original…something that Blair, Eleanor, and Lily delivered in their performances. The new show is very sterile. Some of the teachers are humorous, but overall it’s all very mechanical.

I actually like the teachers. Not understanding the hate they get online. They add a needed humor and lightness to the show.

My sister was telling me how much she likes the teachers too. Mostly Kate. I said I do too but all over the internet people stay bashing them.

Gossip Girl is terrible. I'm done. I gave it 7.5 episodes. The Thanksgiving episode was not good. Obviously if it is so popular that it broke all records on HBO, clearly I've aged out of the audience and no longer get the humor or fun they are selling. I think if it were any good, people would be discussing it much more than it has been. The acting is terrible, there is not chemistry between any of the cast members. Disappointing, but let Gen Z have their show to enjoy.

So I just watched the new three episodes and 10/11 are not nearly as good as 7-9 were. They weren’t bad but the show is just starting to feel rushed.

Episode 12 was a lot of fun though and my favorite of these 3. Luna's boyfriend is HOT. Woof. Prime small town beef.

However, I don’t get why it’s being rushed. I get they are only doing 12 episode seasons but HBO could have extended it 3 episodes and made it 15 to not rush shit. For instance, Obie now has a new GF in episode 12. We learn they’ve known each other for 10 days. We meet her and they break up within the same episode. We are supposed to feel bad about her despite not knowing her. You still sort of do because they make her so overly nice so you care a bit, but still.

Granted, upon rewatching it, I realized that the OG show did shit like that too. Characters just popped in and out within an episode at times. I guess it stands out more now than it did then.

Also, I love the Max/Aki/Audrey storyline but hate that he gave in and agreed during episode 12. I was hoping he actually kept pushing them away because he knows in the end someone will end up hurt, most likely him. But he decided to try things out… ugh.

I'm watching the Santacon episode, at least they correctly displayed how annoying that event is.

For me, the finale was a bit underwhelming. Julien texting Gossip Girl forming an alliance ... or going to war with her? I mean, after the scorched earth stunt GG pulled (loved the aftermath montage with the guy screaming at the other guy "You told Gossip Girl I gave you herpes?????") I was curious how the show keeps Gossip Girl alive, but that seemed a bit far-fetched (the coach, as GG, focussing on Julien) that Julien would be the one to reach out.

How many times have the throuple broken up by now, twice? And back together for the finale. Aw.

My biggest issue with this reboot is the character motivations, or lack thereof. We never know what their true motivations are and why they do what they do. They just do things. It’s strange. Are they all sociopaths?

Also, the lack of consequences. There are moments that are great and you know it’s gonna get juicy, but then the writers drop the ball and it never explodes, like the Rafa/Max sex tape. During the mid-season finale Max sends it to GG. You’re left thinking this is gonna become a big scandal and drama. Nope! Episode 7 Max admits it wasn’t just Rafa’s fault they were fucking, Rafa sees the video and then he quits quietly. The end of that storyline.

Gossip Girl exposes everyone who has ever tipped GG off and what they said, there should be massive backlash and consequences within the group, but nope. Everyone is just fine and dandy like nothing happened. It’s ridiculous.

Julien and GG working together? I hope that next season that is scrapped fast. I also hope they introduce new blood to shake shit up more. I see they’re setting Monet up to be the new Queen B, and that works. She’s a legit cunt who will do anything to be at the top. She would sell her own bloodline down the River. Julien started off cutthroat but they softened her up quickly.

R72 I feel some of the kids we see in episodes 10-12 are going to be recurring characters, or even made main characters, for season 2, like Luna's upstate small town hottie she fucks around with once a year. They made it a point to mention he is moving to the city for opportunities, so we will most likely see more of him.

I was reading they may also promote Luna and Monet from recurring to main next season, which is why we saw more of them during the second half of the season and they are being set up with their own storylines, finally.

I like how in one episode, Luna is the voice of reason Max turns to for advice.

They dropped all 6 episodes within two weeks so people have them all to watch during this month, when people will be home more, off of work more and out of school more.

I think the disconnect between the teachers and student hate online is a generation thing, minus the group of millennial women that watched the OG GG growing up. I’m also think the teachers are a welcome sometimes campy break. It beats watching the parents have the same type of on-again off-again relationships that their teenage children had, looking at you OG GG.

The teachers are spending less time on relationship crap and more time on morality and causing issues. I love it. Leave the relationship stuff to the teens since it’s supposed to be a show about them.

I think S2 needs to introduce a new guy. Preferably a smoking hot one. The show needs some jock meat. The current guys are too complacent. Even Max may grow tired if he’s stuck in a relationship.

Another crazy thought would be to hire Chance Crawford. Nate ran for mayor. Have one of the girls work in his office. He can date Obie’s sister. He can’t be that busy with The Boys since they hardly use him or his host ass.

Chace Crawford was the weak link on the OG show besides Taylor Momsen, and that says a lot, because a lot of that cast weren’t very good.

The reboot cast makes the original GG stars seem like SAG award-winners.

Max and Julien are the two least believable as teens, and it’s because they very much look their real ages.

This cast is not good. They have the look and the clothing, but none of the attitude or chemistry. Even though the parents are tangential in the OG GG, they were still kind of interesting and fun (Lili, CeCe, Bart). The music industry dad is just not appealing and I've heard he is actually a good actor in other things. For as progressive as GG is, I would have appreciate just making Max gay vs. pan or bi, which is always the easy way out when trying to create a gay central character. Even stylistically, the color of the show is so drab. There is not central conflict between the characters, all the characters for the most part are generally nice, and I just don't believe the chemistry. Say what you will about even the dregs of the OG, but Little J/Taylor Momsen and Blair Waldorf had a great arc the first couple of seasons and watching them go at each other was fun. Even Chace Crawford had whoring himself out and fucking milfs was interesting the first couple of seasons.

I could see this having huge initial numbers, but nobody is talking about this show on the DL or IRL. Unlike "Cruel Summer" which ended right when GG started and everyone, young and old was talking about it. I think they are dumping these episodes because there isn't enough engagement to hold weekly episodic releases.

Both Max and Julien are older in real life than Tavi Gevison who plays Kate. When you have actors older than the people playing the teachers, it's gonna be hard to buy them as teenagers.

Julien is very pretty, but she is a mediocre actress at best and she definitely reads late 20's especially next to her 18 y/o rival sister who looks like a baby next her.

I think the cast is doing great. It’s the writers making a mess, and it’s funny because most of them are the same ones from the OG show!

Granted the OG show was super messy too, upon rewatch. But they knew how to create drama and plots while now they create drama and kill it so fast with no consequences.

I liked the actor who played Juliens dad. I don’t think any of the parents are doing a bad job, and actually, I find the scenes with the parents more enjoyable in this one. I did not feel that way about the OG show and found those parents drama boring by season 4.

I feel DL lies a lot though. DL isn’t what it once was. There is hardly anyone on this site anymore. Many people have been turned off by the never ending trolling etc. The site is dead at times.

Go on twitter, you will find tweets about the show. The other day someone said the Reddit page is all the OG show, I checked today and that’s a lie. Almost the entire first page is about the reboot. GG just posted a photo on Instagram an hour ago and there was engagements.

DL is not the demo for this show but they wanna feel young so bad they think they are.

Many people are watching, even some who hate it seem to keep watching and even admit it’s at least entertaining.

One of the biggest complaints is the show isn’t “problematic” enough. GG was very problematic and didn’t hold back. This time it’s like they’re scared to be troublesome. It needs that edge back.
