To reply to the last thread on the previous post, no. My dentist is not hot. He's probably in his late 60s/early 70s and, poor man, an avid NY Jets fan. But he knows his stuff as far as dentistry is concerned.

Whelming, but funny, today I returned some photos at Walgreens that devolved into a "Who's on first?" skit until we finally resolved the situation.

My computer screen has been FILTHY for years. Last night I looked up how to clean it. 70% Rubbing alcohol on a microfiber rub on computer screen. The instructions say to disconnect the computer screen. I could not do that because I would not be able to tell if I had cleaned it properly so I left it turned on. The end result has been my computer screen almost looks new. There are still remnants of my meals on the screen but it's still a dramatic improvement from before. I'm quite pleased with the results.

I had trouble with the ATM today at the bank. The machine would accept my card and pin, but wouldn’t complete a transaction. I went inside the bank to see what the problem was…
It was me. I wasn’t using my ATM card, I was using my credit card. The teller could tell I was embarrassed, but she was very kind.

My junky little car passed emissions inspection today, and getting there and back was a nice drive through changing leaves with Adele on the stereo.

LOL, R10. I can relate somewhat.
In the 2000s I was traveling a lot for work and was in Kennesaw, GA. I'm from NJ, by the way. I pulled into the gas station and sat at the pump, waiting for one of the attendants to fill my tank. I must have sat there 3 or so minutes, wondering why they were just standing around. I then noticed everyone else pumping their own gas. Glad I noticed that because I was getting ready to get out of the car and yell at them.
Update - Dentist appointment was a success. I didn't have any cavities but he did notice a worn metallic filling so he replaced it.

My Volkswagen which I've had for over 12 and a half years has a film of grime on the front window and back window. When I'm driving at night it looks like the windshield is fogged up. I can barely see with the glare of cars headlights and the film of grime. I finally did something about it on Sunday. I went online and I read that the best way to clean the window grime is a combination of White Vinegar and water in a spray bottle and clean with a micro fiber cloth. I did the inside and the outside of the front window - just to be thorough. I did the back window inside and out as well. What a dramatic difference. I guess I'm on a roll lately.

Fleas. Our dog has fleas. I've used the medicine on the back of her neck, flea shampoo and a pill that's supposed to kill them when they bite her.
I'm definitely underwhelmed with how well they work. I'm getting bit.
Going to give her a bath in the morning, flea bomb the house and take a nice drive with her for a few hours while the fog settles.

I keep looking up a dog rehoming website. I’d love to rescue a dog, but all the ones available are either in the kennels because they are huge, ferocious things which tried to eat their previous owner, or seriously ill one-legged creatures with diabetes.
Is there no nice middle-aged mongrel out there looking for a new home?

Aww, R25, so sweet of you to want to bring home a middle-aged mongrel. Maybe communicate with the people who work at your local ASPCAs, Humane Societies, etc. Let them know what you're looking for. I always heard that older animals are hard to adopt out (people want puppies), so you may find a middle-aged dog.

Yesterday I was taking my daily walk and the sound of these worker cutting stone at the building site of a new McMansion plus the gardeners making a RACKET with their leaf machines- I had to take most of my walk with my fingers in my ears, unfortunately later my right was clogged. I must have pushed my earwax into my ear. I must make an appointment with my ear doctor to have my ear wax removed. I have not done so since August 2020.

Pinch of baking soda + sip of water. Cures heartburn instantly. I didn't try it for a whole year because it sounded like old wives' tale bullshit. It works.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 20, 2021 5:29 AM |
Of course, baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a base which neutralizes acids. Baking soda and water is just a homemade Tums (calcium bicarbonate).
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 20, 2021 5:55 AM |
Tums never worked as well or as fast as the baking soda and water. I'm not saying you're wrong, R39 (you're not), just that the pinch of baking soda is basically instant and almost free given how cheap the stuff is.

Hello, R49! I'm still here.
While the work the dentist feels better, I think I do have a cavity towards the front on the left. Oh well. I'll get that taken care of before the end of the year.
UHC Dental is still dragging its feet on providing my dentist with a pre-determination of benefits. The replacement posts and crown will cost about $1200. My insurance will pay 50% but I've almost hit the max for this benefit year. I told the office if you don't hear from UHC by the first week in Dec., I'll pay full price for the work. I don't give a shit about that right now. I just want my invisible aligners!

This afternoon I decided to watch the remake of Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan which is streaming on Prime video for only 9 more days. However, when I pulled up the video there was a large picture of Steve Mc Queen who, people might know, starred in the original. Everything else indicates the video is the Brosnan version.
I was not expecting to be confronted with this confusing juxtaposition and thought it rather unfair to Mr. Brosnan. I feel the implication is that Steve McQueen has some kind of proprietary right to the role of Thomas Crown when no such sentiment, critical or popular, has ever been expressed to my knowledge.

I walked to my local Shop Rite to pick up a few things so I can officially say I went for a walk. It was weird going out at mid-day but I could get used to it.
I qualified for a free turkey breast. I have to pick it up by 11/25 so I guess I'll go out tomorrow and see if I can score one. I might enjoy some turkey on Christmas. It will be my first Christmas alone (with Cos, of course) and I'm kinda looking forward to it.

R136, I hope you enjoy your Christmas with whoever you are spending it with. To be honest, for me, Christmas hasn't been the same since Mom went into assisted living (she died in 2016 after battling dementia). The best part was my brother and 2 sisters getting together at Mom's and opening presents. My brother and one sister died in 2017 so there's only my sister and Dad still alive. Dad lives 90 minutes away and has his own life. My remaining sister isn't really a holiday person.
I used to go to my Mom's the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and make the stuffing using my grandmother's recipe (making cornmeal cakes from scratch, Bell's Seasoning, onion, celery, butter, Pepperidge Farm white bread cubes). Then we would make three Sweet Potato Corn Pone pies.
R138, Cos doesn't like turkey and doesn't eat human food. He does love chicken so I will make sure he has his FF Savory Centers in chicken flavor for Christmas.

I am officially on vacation as of 3 PM today due to an early release from work. I am free until Monday, December 6th. I do plan to clean out my garage while I'm off. I have paint cans from the previous owner and I've been here 23 years.

I use pineapples as room scents, R241. The shitty Dole ones don't work for some reason but the ones from the ethnic grocery store scent the entire kitchen and that part of the house with pineapple. I generally hate all scented products for the home but actual pineapples are acceptable. Hopefully this isn't whelming to anyone.

I bought a new washing machine, the last one lasted something like 8+ years. it was a cheapo too bought at less than €300. I regret the new purchase it's an LG, mid of the segment one. it doesn't fill all the way for the clothes to be laying in water, I don't know if this is a water saving feature or if it's broken and some how doesn't fill completly.
the shame is that the old one wasn't broken maybe only the heating element needed fixing but I though LG great brand name it most defenetly will be beter. WRONG

New machines do use less water. I guess water’s in short supply in some places.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | November 29, 2021 4:54 PM |
Not that it's only a short supply as much as being an ecological advance. I have a low water washer, where I was skeptical at first, but I have to admit that they do get clothes clean! One caveat is that you can't just set it and walk away; the machine throws the clothes around with wild abandon to determine the weight to get the appropriate amount of water, so you are left with a huge unbalanced heap, requiring one to hit the pause button to redistribute the clothes as soon as the water starts up.

I hate replacing things that turn out worse than the thing you replaced (who doesn't?) I updated my kitchen ten years ago and bought a new dishwasher. Assuming you have online banking r320, just log in to your account and you should be able to request a replacement. It will take about a week to arrive. Once you activate the new one, the old one becomes obsolete.

You let the oil get down to 5%! I had my first car servicing eight months after I bought it (new) when I hit roughly 1,500 miles (only driven locally a few miles a day). I was at 35% feeling I was pushing things. I get an email report monthly of the latest computer findings - tires are averaging 34psi, which means refills in near future, but not immediately I suppose.
Let us know how you're doing after the oil change, and please don't let it get nearly that low again!
by Anonymous | reply 326 | December 1, 2021 1:32 PM |
R320: I had a spell where my debit card started not working at quite a few businesses. The card was old and scuffed up, so I figured it was shot and ordered a replacement. It made no difference, the card still would not work in the very same businesses where the old one had problems. The problem was the interface between the card and the reading devices. Mine was a Mastercard debit card, in the US, and I've been told in various places that that kind of card is just not scannable magnetically, and they have to input the numbers into their system manually. It's not a common problem, but noticeable. Maybe you're having the same problem...(??).

I bought a new fancy pantsy electric cordless vacuum cleaner half price in the Black Friday Amazon sale.
It's overwhelming in that it pulls you along, rather than you pushing it around. It does its job but I feel it just skims over the top of the carpet. I DON'T walk into this room later on and think 'WHOA! I vacuumed this room earlier. Feels so good 'n' fresh." So by and large i'd say underwhelming and will keep my old machines that are heavy and bulky but do a better job.

I didn't though, is the thing - it just said that out of the blue without any prior warning! I have a very short commute (I actually work from home part time) and don't often take long drives; the car is very low mileage, and its last oil change was in September 2021.
I asked them to take a look at it when I took it in for the oil change today, because the whole thing struck me as odd (the mechanic agreed) and it turns out there's a valve leak that's making it leak oil. Very simple quick fix and it's covered by the car's extended warranty, so bullet dodged and all is well, but thank you for worrying about me and my car (not being sarcastic).

I had some paintings/portraits I inherited. They were quite good paintings but I don't really like portraits of people I don't know all over my house, it's overwhelming, quite frankly., so I took them to auction.
The auction house woman was very snitty about two of them by a particular artist but agreed to try to sell them for me. The night before the auction she frantically emailed me to ask if she could lower the reserve price to £500 on one of them "to ensure we sell it"...that particular painting sold for £4,400. They other one by the same artist did almost as well. In fact she underestimated all of them.
It was fun and overwhelming watching the auction online....it was like "OMG - here we go...one of mine...keep going...keep going".

or do you vary it a little?
by Anonymous | reply 373 | December 4, 2021 8:27 AM |
I'm mildly annoyed at the stupid "Yassification" trend on Twitter (now thankfully almost over, I think). There are all the "Yassified" pictures as well as people changing their profile names to things like "Yassify (name)", and making poems and little haikus using "Yassification" and other made-up similar words.
I blocked the Yassify Bot (which isn't even a bot, it's some random woman with a paid FaceTune subscription) but people have memed a lot of the images so they will be with us for ages, unfortunately.
It's all very whelming.

by Anonymous | reply 375 | December 4, 2021 10:12 AM |
I do vary my walking route. But to get to the point where I can vary it, I have to walk by the parking lot with the pong. The alternative routes to get where I want to go are a little undeveloped, with gaps where the roads and sidewalks are unpaved.
All this aside, it’s a lovely neighbourhood.

The delivery people lately have more often than not taken to setting the boxes directly in front of the storm door. Since it opens outward, I have to push whatever has been delivered away with the glass door, go outside and retrieve it, then come back in, which takes extra time and effort than if they'd just set it off to the side a little (where it is also obscured from the street, making the delivery safer).
Do they not see that the door opens outward, like every storm door here? (they are common).

by Anonymous | reply 405 | December 5, 2021 3:05 PM |
R405 it's easier if you have two big glasses of water in the morning (I down two 22 oz glasses back to back; I take the first one before anything and then drink the second one while taking my supplements and a few medications).
Then have another 22 oz glass in the afternoon, and one more in the early evening. Couple that with whatever else you typically drink during the day and you'll be well hydrated.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | December 5, 2021 3:18 PM |
You sort of have to plan the water drinking around being at home otherwise you’re running to public bathrooms as you go about your day.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | December 5, 2021 3:24 PM |
That's why I think it's better to drink big glasses a few times a day than it is to sip water all day like I see some people do. Concentrates the restroom time better.

by Anonymous | reply 502 | December 10, 2021 4:11 PM |
I had itchy ears for years every time I ate a banana. Finally made the correlation - allergy! You likely have an allergy or sensitivity to something you are ingesting. Could even be rhinitis or dust allergy. Try an antihisthamine? You may have to take it for several days in a row.

by Anonymous | reply 507 | December 10, 2021 6:27 PM |
R502, they only thing I know for sure that I'm allergic to is amoxicillin. I also had a bad season (pollen?) allergy in *winter*, of all seasons, in Washington DC.
I also get red eyes, out of nowhere (in addition to itchy ears). My doctor said it's allergies. I think it's seasonal (pollen).

I put way too much "Mood" essential oil blend in my oil diffuser and now it's making my eyes water and my entire house reek of peppermint. For some reason I thought it was an orange-based scent but realized otherwise after I'd put a bunch in the diffuser.
I suppose I shall have to throw it out and use something else.

I've done some research and one shouldn't steep a tea bag longer than five minutes.
I really didn't need to add this to the list of all the things that I have to think about. It's never been a problem in the past for me. I'm not sure how to think about it.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | December 11, 2021 2:02 AM |
That's the soonest I'd squeeze the bags with fingers.
I usually leave them in the pot, though. Second cup is stronger, so you add cream and booze.

Yesterday, I braved a trip to Trader Joe's, which as a nervous driver I usually dread. Both the roads themselves, and the parking lot were just fine. The supermarkets here do not sell much in the way of coffee creamer, as was explained by a manager that it's a scarcity of cardboard to make cartons that's the issue. There was plenty of Half & Half in quart cartons there, as well as TJ toilet paper (though not a lot) on the shelf.

Watched the movie "Used People" from 1992* *Spoiler Alert if you have been planning to watch since 1992
Set in 1960s Queens, NY with an all star cast - Shirley MacLaine, Marcello Mastroianni, Kathy Bates, Marcia Gay Harden, Jessica Tandy, Doris Roberts and Joe Pantoliano
It looked as if were going to be the NY version of "Steel Magnolias" or "Terms of Endearment"...
But bupkis - this wouldn't even have made a good episode of "The Nanny"
Shirley MacLaine comes across as a nasty cunt (who's acting? she got paid for this?)
Kathy Bates can't hold onto her Queens accent; ; and the other characters are just two-dimensional and mostly annoying

I ordered a Bloody Mary with lunch today. Thought it seemed a bit weak, but okay... a few minutes later the waitress plopped another on the table saying, "That looked too watery, so here's a fresh one."
The Fred Flintstone portion of chicken-and-waffles I did find a bit whelming.

R561, nice that she gave you a fresh Bloody Mary.
I was at an Irish bar once and I ordered a Negroni (I know, I know). I just wanted to try one. The bartender didn't even know how to make it. I Googled a recipe and he (bartender) made me a Negroni. I'm not even sure what it was supposed to taste like, but I didn't like it that much. (I do like Campari and gin, so it wasn't that I disliked the basic elements.)
Bartender asked me: "How is it?" I said, "Good." I think he could tell, by the look on my face, that it wasn't that great. When I got my bar tab, Negroni was not on it.

I was craving lime Tostitos. I had some homemade salsa at home. But I was in a health food store (no Tostitos). I tried these Late July brand jalapeño lime tortilla chips. Really good. Reminds me, in a good way, of the old school taco-flavored Doritos. I read the ingredients and was surprised to find they're vegan. Tastes cheesy, somehow.
Little more pricey than Tostitos in that it's about the same price and you get half as much (by weight). However, I don't need to eat a whole bag of Tostitos and I'm capable of that.

All of my dogs so far have been rescue dogs.
I have a Pitt Bull mix now. He's lovable but a lot of work. He's almost 10 - and I'm thinking about that day when he won't be around any more.
