One dead , one seriously injured after blank gun mishap on Alec Baldwin’s current movie shoot
by Anonymous | reply 606 | October 22, 2021 9:37 PM |
Is he filming the Alex Murdaugh story?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 22, 2021 12:48 AM |
Someone actually still pays for him to be in their movies? Does he costar with Nicholas Cage and Bruce Willis?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 22, 2021 12:49 AM |
Has Hilaria posted professional photographs of herself balled up and crying in only her lace bra and "no makeup" yet?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 22, 2021 12:50 AM |
That fat slob probably had mayonaise on his fingers and was playing with the guns.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 22, 2021 12:54 AM |
isn't this the same thing that happened to Brandon Lee all those years ago? You'd think studios would have stopped making these tragic "mishaps"
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 22, 2021 12:54 AM |
Ay, dios mio! How you say in Inglés... Ees so tragil? So tragical? I have not the word for thees so bad thing. So much sorry I am!!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 22, 2021 12:55 AM |
I’ve had him some years ago. I was a producer at the time. Let’s just say that I wasn’t impressed. He kept yelling “Faggot! Faggot!” When he came. Seems to be a preoccupation with him. Total turn-off. Anyway, fa, er, gay gentlemen, I’ve got a man waiting. No life support! It’s been a good day.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 22, 2021 12:55 AM |
This may cancel movie
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 22, 2021 12:57 AM |
Did they not have stunt people and fire arms specialists on set?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 22, 2021 1:03 AM |
Is it the Jon Erik Hexum story?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 22, 2021 1:08 AM |
Alec is the producer 😬
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 22, 2021 1:10 AM |
He'll somehow blame this on Ireland.

How you say.... million dollar lawsuit?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 22, 2021 1:25 AM |
I am baffled as to how this even happens. Wouldn't they first make sure that the gun was either fake or unloaded?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 22, 2021 1:25 AM |
R17, I think I remember from the Jon Erik Hexum story that even blanks can be dangerous.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 22, 2021 1:43 AM |
And r4 gave me one of those belly laughs that takes you by surprise. Thanks, friend.

How do TWO people get hurt in a prop gun accident? Was it a real bullet?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 22, 2021 1:44 AM |
Great question
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 22, 2021 1:45 AM |
Thank heavens DL treasure Frances Fisher wasn't hurt! She and hunky Travis Fimmel are costarring in the film.

¡Ay Dios mío!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 22, 2021 1:55 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 22, 2021 1:57 AM |
He is probably THRILLED to be on location. He’s crying because he might have to go home to the squalling brats and Doña Hilaria.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 22, 2021 2:00 AM |
It was the director of photography who was killed and Alec was on scene as it was a rehearsal
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 22, 2021 2:00 AM |
[quote] DL treasure Frances Fisher
Wait - this is a thing?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 22, 2021 2:00 AM |
There's an early talkie whodunnit where a a prop gun is deliberately loaded with real ammo to ensure a much-loathed leading man is killed.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 22, 2021 2:05 AM |
Holy shit, who was the “principal castmember”?
Deadline previously heard from sources that a principal castmember cocked a gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live rounds in it, hitting two people, a man and a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 22, 2021 2:07 AM |
Alec has not updated his Instagram. Unusual for him

I read Alec's IG username as "alecbaldwinista" and thought, " Good fuck, he's given in to the faux Spanish facade as well!"
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 22, 2021 2:19 AM |
Alec fired the shot !! I hope this is not true . Horrible
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 22, 2021 2:22 AM |
Did he call her a rude, thoughtless pig before firing?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 22, 2021 2:25 AM |
[quote]Baldwin fired the gun, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office. The film’s director, Joel Souza, was also hit, and was receiving emergency care at a hospital in Santa Fe.
It was an accident but how do you live with yourself after that?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 22, 2021 2:27 AM |
He’s the producer. He’s responsible
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 22, 2021 2:28 AM |
Yikes. RIP Alec’s career
Hope he has a huge nest egg/retirement for that huge family he had to have at 63 yrs old
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 22, 2021 2:28 AM |
Between this and all the drama with his wife and their brood I fear a heart attack is next for Alec.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 22, 2021 2:28 AM |
I feel for him truly . This is a nightmare
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 22, 2021 2:29 AM |
Wow. How could there be a loaded gun on set? Geez.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 22, 2021 2:31 AM |
But how are the babies, are the babies alright?

by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 22, 2021 2:39 AM |
Whaaat?! This is kind of shocking.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 22, 2021 2:42 AM |
The victim was a 41 year old woman. I saw her name online but won't post it because it's not officially confirmed. Very sad.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 22, 2021 2:42 AM |
Here's the synopsis of the film
Rust: A 13 year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880's Kansas, goes on the run with his long estranged grandfather after he's sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.
Stars - Travis Fimmel, Jensen Ackles, Frances Fisher

RIP Alex Baldwin career and maybe his freedom. Depends what happened.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 22, 2021 2:44 AM |
There are real bullets in prop guns???
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 22, 2021 2:44 AM |
SNL should be a weird set to be on tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 22, 2021 2:44 AM |
I don’t see him serving time or even being charged for firing the gun, r55. But as producer he is open to liability.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 22, 2021 2:51 AM |
That’s what I wanna know r56.
There has to be someone on DL that works on movie sets. I can’t even imagine why a prop gun would have real bullets

How does he accidentally shoot two people? Was the director standing directly behind the cinematographer? How does he fire a second time?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | October 22, 2021 3:05 AM |
Many years ago, Baldwin was using the pay phone next to me ( so you can tell it was at least 20 years ago.) He was screaming like a lunatic at the person on the other end. He also smashed the phone multiple times when he was done. It’s sad that age and I assume copious therapy and maybe meds doesn’t seem to have helped.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | October 22, 2021 3:06 AM |
I think FOX has finally come upon a gun story they'll cover.

by Anonymous | reply 86 | October 22, 2021 3:07 AM |
Alec Baldwin was the Scott Rudin of actors. His career is probably over.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 22, 2021 3:07 AM |
Y-I-K-E-S
Especially because he is so famous for his hot temper.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | October 22, 2021 3:07 AM |
I don't think I could return to the set after this. I don't think I could even look at myself in the mirror after this.
Until now I've felt bad for Alec & Halyna Hutchins' family, it just clicked, how does a director return to a set to direct an actor who accidentally shot him?
[quote]I don’t see him serving time or even being charged for firing the gun, [R55]. But as producer he is open to liability.
I don't see him serving time.
Twilight Zone: The Movie was a different situation, but there were civil suits against the studio and director and settlements were paid.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | October 22, 2021 3:07 AM |
Hollywood knows better than this.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | October 22, 2021 3:08 AM |
Are they saying yet if the actual bullet discharged? How the fuck did this happen again?? They put so many regulations in place after “The Crow”. I still can’t believe actors who feel safe using these things. Michelle Pfeiffer was shot at repeatedly at close range in a Batman movie. I remember watching it and thinking how anyone could do a scene like that and feel safe.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | October 22, 2021 3:10 AM |
Traumatizing
by Anonymous | reply 92 | October 22, 2021 3:10 AM |

IMO, Alec got away, for a very long time, with some bad behavior, incl. homophobic stuff. Even on DL. Enough with this asshole, already. His wife will probably, finally, stop having children. Wife is a total fraud and somehow got a pass for that.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | October 22, 2021 3:16 AM |
R67, that reminds me of the crazy bitch in “The Queen of Versailles” who said that once she realized she could hire nannies, she decided to have six kids.
Then her husband’s business started to fail and the money dried up and she was was floundering in a mansion with only two maids to do everything. It was hilarious, except that the kids really suffered for it.

I hope the police due a serious investigation because one has to at least ask if Alec did it on purpose. Remember Alec punched his hand through a wall working with that actress on Broadway?
Plus he had that fight over a parking spot.
Plus with a duplitious nutjob of a wife NOTHING would surprise me.
Also, he blocked me on Twitter after I said something innocuous.
It's suspicious.

I don't think it was on purpose. He has rage issues but it sounds like an accident.
However, he shot and killed a cinematographer so even if it is an accident, I'm sure no DP would work with him now. He will probably never recover from this.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | October 22, 2021 3:42 AM |
If, as reported, they were shooting a scene with the gun: a) who brings a real gun on set without it being impounded and watched over by someone till it's needed? b) who puts real bullets in a gun that is due to be fired on set? c) how did the cinematographer AND director, who stand behind the cameras, get in the way of bullets being fired during a scene?
It smells all wrong.

This kind of childish comment full of text speak and wrong words is exactly what the rightwing trolls on Twitter have been posting for the last couple of hours. They're ghouls, happy someone is dead and another in critical condition, because they get to dunk on Alec Baldwin. Absolutely no sense of proportion or decency.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 22, 2021 3:55 AM |
horrible. They really should stop using real weapons in hollywood
For reference, here's a 2005 interview with the actor who accidentally shot Brandon Lee
by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 22, 2021 3:56 AM |
On the bright side, they can just put Stephen or Billy in a fat suit and still finish the movie.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 22, 2021 3:56 AM |
Blanks are real bullets!
They're real bullets that have had the projectiles removed. If a blank has a manufacturing defect like a piece of metal accidentally lodged in the cotton wadding, that piece of metal will turn into a bullet. If the blank breaks off part of the barrel of the gun (especially if it's a vintage gun) then that piece of the gun will turn into a projectile.

I assume someone has already said that this movie is DOA, but I still felt compelled to type it. Isn't that strange.? I've been moody and blue, lately. So this might be seeking both validation and abuse, I guess. Speaking of guess, I bet you already realized that I'm really stoned. Not that I added anything to life in posting this comment, but it kept me busy for a few minutes. I'm a slow typist, ergo, wasted time.

Some semantics here. What most people refer to as bullets are actually cartridges, which consist of the shell casing, powder load and projectile. In a handgun ir rifle cartridge, the projectile is as bullet. In a shot gun the projectile is either shot or a slug. Shotgun cartridges are also known as shells. They also include wadding to hold the powder and shot tight. A pistol cartridge will have a reduced powder charge and paper and wax wadding to hold in the powder. At point blank range this can be dangerous as Jon-Erik Hexum found out. There is no way this wadding could be lethal at any sort of distance. It simply doesn’t have the mass or energy. This is why bullets are made from lead.
I’ve been in several movie sets where firearms were present. There is a specialist in the prop department known as an armorer who is in charge of the firearms and loads them with blank cartridges. Nobody even remotely qualified could confuse a blank with a live round. Without a lead bulletin, the blank weighs next to nothing compared to the real deal. There should be no way a live round should be anywhere near a movie set

[quote]How does he accidentally shoot two people?
The scene called for him to shoot twice, I'm sure. The real questions are why was ANYONE standing in the line of fire for the shot, and how did the gun manage to shoot two projectiles? Real guns used as props are common enough in period films, they use antique guns to look authentic, but sets line up shots so that no one on cast or crew is actually in front of the gun when it goes off because of situations just like this.
Also, I can see one blank being a defect and shooting a projectile, not two. I could also see a blank causing a chip in the barrel that turned into a projectile, but I can't imagine it could have fired a second round after that kind of damage, not without hurting the person holding the gun.

I can't help but think of Midnight Rider (the Gregg Allman biopic). They were going to film a scene on a railroad but didn't have permission. Yet they filmed anyway and a train came rolling through. A camerawoman was killed and several others were hurt. The film was cancelled and people (including the director) went to prison. Then there was a stuntwoman who lost her arm on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and another crew member was crushed to death by a Hummer in a separate incident.
So this is far from the first time something like this has happened.

Usually, news stories, even tragic ones, about people I don't know personally tend to not impact me too much. But there's something about this one that has me really depressed. Maybe it has partly to do with people's reaction to it. A comment in the article at R162 theorizes that they were rehearsing a scene in which Alec's character fires 2 shots directly into the camera, directly where both victims would have been standing if the director of photograph were holding the camera. They also guessed that she could have been holding the camera in lieu of an absent union crew member.
If they were close enough and if the wadding hit a vulnerable area (an eye), maybe that could do this kind of damage? Still, the theory about shooting two shots directly into the camera sounds plausible.

R278 Um, blanks are not meant to go through a person's body. Even for Jon-Erik Hexum, the blank didn't go through his skull and he literally pointed the gun directly at his head.
So before you call someone stupid, you should look in the mirror.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | October 22, 2021 7:14 AM |
For all we know, the frame was set up so the DP and director were both looking at the monitor, and in Baldwin's sight line per the nature of the shot, so to speak.
Someone at Hollywood Elsewhere dug up a tweet from four years ago ... morbid ...

Gun loaded with real bullets. I didn't think a blank could do that much damage.
A responsible shooter would have known to check the gun's load himself. You NEVER trust a firearm you haven't checked.

A stuntman was killed by a blank in 2017. From the description, this one sounds like commotio cordis. With enough force, being struck in the chest during the ascending phase of the T-wave can fatally disrupt a heart's rhythm. A deep, penetrating wound isn't necessary.
I've only seen one case, and it was a boy who was playing street hockey and got hit by small rubber ball. According to the kids playing with him, he said "nice..." and fell forward before he could finish. He was very lucky that there was a school sporting event at the time and they were playing just across the parking lot from the ambulance.
[quote]Police were notified prior to the filming of the video that guns would be used and that there was no live ammunition on site.
[quote]Blanks were used but it is suspected that a piece, or pieces, of debris from one of the chambers exited the barrel, fatally injuring the Gold Coast father, according to an industry insider who wanted to remain anonymous.
[quote]Fairfax Media was told the 28-year-old's fellow stuntmen only realised he was in trouble once they noticed he had not returned to his feet as they had.
[quote]There was a wound to Ofner's chest, but not that of a shotgun blast, and very little blood surrounding him.
[quote]The industry insider said CPR was performed on Ofner as soon as his condition was made clear, but he died almost instantly.

Probably some idiot had been showing off, playing with the gun, using real bullets and left one in, forgetting about it, now knowing they were about to rehearse. OR Alec went off schedule and decided to rehearse the scene unplanned, used the wrong gun, and/or picked up the hot gun someone had been playing with because it wasn't supposed to be used that day. Due to his impatience or temper, he might have rushed the grips or gone off plan.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | October 22, 2021 7:53 AM |
Unless he fired two shots, the scenario at R308 is the only one that makes sense. I realized after I posted at R300 that it might have sounded like I was suggesting the same thing happened here. I wasn't. I was just pointing out another on-set shooting death and what can happen with blanks at close range, and balls or hockey pucks at a longer range.
Someone commented on how guns are supposed to be handled on film sets. I have no idea how accurate this is...
My guess is there wasn’t an armorer due to budget.
A word about set protocol- the first assistant director is responsible for the safety of cast and crew on set. Period.
The stunt coordinator is responsible for the safety of the actors, but of course there is overlap.
Lacking an armorer, the prop master is responsible for the safety of the weapons.
The 1st AD usually looks down the barrel of every gun that comes on set, including dupes and toys-the prop master shows them to him. If he doesn’t the AD makes sure he never makes that mistake again.
The first AD then shows the weapon to the actors to make sure they know whether they are loaded or not. There is absolutely never a reason to be rehearsing with a loaded gun.
When the weapons are loaded the 1st AD holds a brief safety meeting alerting the cast and crew that there are loaded weapons on set, directing that nobody handles them except the armorer/propmaster and the involved actors.
When the shot is over the armorer/propmaster immediately collects the guns and reloads if another take is necessary.
At least that’s the way it’s supposed to work.
For those of you ready to jail Alec Baldwin, there’s a good chance he didn’t know it was loaded; it could have even discharged during the exchange.
Real live bullets are never used in scenes with actors. “Loaded” or “live” means with a blank, either a full, half or quarter load. Of course, as we’ve seen too many times, those can be deadly if mishandled.
I don’t want to speculate on exactly what happened but of all the guesses in the original, earlier article, the lead from a dummy round lodged in the barrel makes the most sense.
Just a horrible tragedy. Thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends, and with the cast and crew. To various degrees their lives will never be the same.

from ABQ/Santa Fe local tv report, they also interviewed a few film crew members, apparently different sets have different rules/standards, one guy said the extras were even told they can bring their own guns for filming, but another guy who worked for "The Terminator" said they were very strict on handling the guns. This is an indie film, they might not even have a designated "armorer" due to the budget.

I'm acquaintances with two people who knew Hutchins and they are both out for Alec's blood. I've been keeping my big yap shut because I think this sounds like an accident, but someone (or maybe multiple someones) really dropped the ball here.
Fortunately Souza should be fine and a couple of people have said he was never really in critical condition, that it was actually a shrapnel wound that was serious enough but not on par with a gunshot wound. I'll be interested to see if that turns out to be true.

I suppose if it was a day they were going to get live bullet shots, there could have been two guns, one real and one prop, and Alec was given the wrong one. I'd have expected to see safety shields on the set if they were going to shoot live rounds at some point, though, and I didn't see anything like that in the helicopter shots.
[quote]I don’t want to speculate on exactly what happened but of all the guesses in the original, earlier article, the lead from a dummy round lodged in the barrel makes the most sense.
It wouldn't have had the mass to go through one body and hit another, though.
That said, knowing she was hit in the stomach and he was hit in the shoulder, a single shot seems unlikely, unless Alec was on the ground shooting upwards, and Hutchins was also on the ground with Souza standing or kneeling behind her.

A lot of people don't like Alec and right now most are sympathetic with the union, r336. They're going to blame the rich celebrity who shot someone, not anyone on the crew. They're also not exactly thinking logically. All I know is that anyone who says the word "accident" on group chats right now is getting fucking reamed for it.
The info I had on Souza only being hit by shrapnel came about fourth- or fifth-hand from someone who I think was simply guessing based on what they saw on set. They did say the injury was near the neck, which sounds about right, now that we've heard he was injured near the clavicle. Again, I'll be interested to hear more about that in the coming days.

R339, if the bullet hit her in the stomach and him in the shoulder, then she had to have been lower than he was for the trajectory to make sense.

R344 Your statement is the opposite of what should happen. The director, who is male (so likely taller than her), was hit in the shoulder, a higher position on the body.
So for the bullet to make a straight line from her stomach to his shoulder, it means HE was lower than her...e.g. sitting (and her standing).

In my experience, sometimes when families/friends are faced with an unexpected death their immediate reaction is to assign blame. It's almost as if their anger is the only thing that keeps them upright and somewhat functioning in the early hours.
Those same people always seem to lash out at the person with whom they least identify. I've seen them go after random hospital staff who just happened to be in the wrong place and had absolutely no contact with a patient who died.
It probably doesn't help that he has 58 happy, healthy kids and her son is now left without a mother.

If someone sabotaged the guns, it was almost certainly NOT a prop person, because they're going to get blamed. So will the armorer, if there was one.
It will probably turn out to be a mix-up between a real gun and the prop gun, possibly exacerbated by union employees having left the set and the remaining crew being expected to do more than usual, causing distractions. That would be MASSIVE irony since the rumor is the union crew left because of lack of gun safety. They'll get blamed for not being there but the accident isn't their fault, it's the fault of whoever decided to skimp on safety, and it almost certainly wasn't them.

R157- A friend of mine worked on, “Midnight Rider”- I tried to persuade her to work on my project, and vice versa. I’ve interviewed with that director for a previous movie and didn’t get it (I kinda trashed-talked about the lead), but read about his “indie guerrilla” spirit comments, which left a bad taste in my mouth. Even after that incident happened ( a hairstylist almost had her arm severed off and she’s still in litigation), the friend had insisted that she would work with him- I kept on sending her articles about him, telling her that it would be a blot on her career if she insisted), and she finally relented. Obviously a very poor judge of character.
I’ll tell you guys that after the tensions of this weekend (Union’s imminent striking), and most crew loading out Friday/loading in on Monday, our cast and crew are totally wiped. I can see props/armorers not being on their A game.

"I can see props/armorers not being on their A game."
Their job is to be on their A game, every time. There is no B game. If union activity and the threat of striking caused them not to be on their A game, then the union should expect a massive lawsuit (well, the union's insurer should expect it).

Alec is endlessly arrogant and always knows best. I've worked with him on non film-related projecta since 1992. It won't be even a little bit surprising if he rejected onset protocols and did something stupid. Of course he didn't intend to kill anyone but that level of arrogance and hostility never ends well over the long term.
By the way, to the moron who posts that everyone who calls out Alec for his egregious behavior is a trump lover, I worked for the Obama Administration.

I'm sure one of you bitches has already mentioned it, but I found it downright flabbergasting that Alec dodged the bullet on his wife's faux Spanish persona being exposed. He definitely won't dodge the bullet on this shitshow...as won't the poor girl he killed.
Side note, and for karma: Any one of us could accidentally hit a pedestrian on our way to/from home. The irony is that Alec was both starring in and producing this film. And it wasn't as low-budget as people are claiming, what with an all-name primary cast. Him, Travis Fimmel, Francis Fisher, and Jensen Ackles. There was no reason for an accident like this to happen.
Side Note 2: Those above comparing this to a trump claiming he could shoot someone in the middle of Madison Avenue are on point. It's not coincidence that Alec played Trump on 'SNL'; they're both egomaniacal, narcissistic twats. It still doesn't mean Alec purposely killed the poor girl.

R389 They could probably get more money if they planned for a serious litigation rather than a settlement. But litigation can truly poison your life. It’s like a mirage in the desert, constantly hearing talented attorneys tell the story of how wronged you have been; it becomes addictive. If it was my family that just lost a child/wife/mother I would tell them not to lose the next few years to that kind of stress, anger, and reliving the tragedy. Some families will feel guilty for choosing to walk away and lose out on money or (worse) not forcing as much punishment as possible on the people involved who made mistakes. But I think choosing peace even at that cost, getting to let your loved ones memory rest, being able to take the time for the family to heal, all of that is worth losing out on some money.

After the tragic death of actor Jon Eric Hexum in 1985. and Brandon Lee in 1993. Union rules require an accredited fire arms expert bee on set whenever actors are given fire arms to use during a scene. The Propmaster must check these guns before and after they are given to the actors. Baldwin was shooting on a bargain basement film budgeted at only 6 million. Obviously they were cutting corners in violation of IER rules. Baldwin was not only in cast he was a producer and should be held responsible for this recklessness.

From Harvey at TMZ. They have a good track record with these stories:
EXCLUSIVE It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.
An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.
Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.
On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”
“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.
Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”
“Rust” is a Tier 1 one movie, meaning it was being produced for under $6 million. Our source says: “They had safety meetings every day but it was a Tier I movie, so they probably didn’t have more than 1 prop person.” According to the imdb, there was one key medic on the staff and two stunt people.
Whatever happened on the set, Alec Baldwin certainly didn’t intend for this outcome. And “Rust” is done. Sources say the production has been halted but as with the movie about Gregg Allman’s life, in which a crew member was killed because of negligence, lawsuits will now override any chance to that movie being finished.

If the union crew walked out the day before over safety concerns re: gun handling on set he at minimum, as the producer, is likely to pay out $$$$.

Who was Halyna Hutchins? Tributes paid to director of photography killed by prop gun
(CNN)The film industry has been left shocked and in mourning after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on set when actor and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm. Hutchins, who was 42, was director of photography for Baldwin's latest movie, "Rust," a Western which was being filmed in New Mexico and stars Baldwin, Travis Fimmel and Jensen Ackles. According to law enforcement statements provided to CNN, Hutchins was shot around 1:50 p.m. Thursday local time and was airlifted to hospital but died of her injuries.
She worked on movies including "Archenemy," starring Joe Manganiello, which was released last year, and was named a rising star by American Cinematographer magazine in 2019.
According to her website, Hutchins was raised at a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle and initially studied as a journalist, graduating from Kyiv National University with a degree in international journalism, before going on to work on documentary productions across Europe and switching to film. On her Instagram page, she described herself as a "Restless Dreamer. Adrenaline junkie. Cinematographer" and shared photos of the "Rust" set.
Her final post, on Wednesday, showed a video of her riding on horseback in New Mexico.
Film director James Cullen Bressack commented on her post to say: "I will miss you my friend.... This is devastating." Other directors paid tribute to Hutchins. "Archenemy" director Adam Egypt Mortimer said: "I'm so sad about losing Halyna. And so infuriated that this could happen on a set. She was a brilliant talent who was absolutely committed to art and to film." He said in a further tweet she had "a brilliant mind." AFI Conservatory, a film school which is part of the American Film Institute, tweeted Friday: "As is profoundly true in the art of cinematography, words alone cannot capture the loss of one so dear to the AFI community. At AFI, we pledge to see that Halyna Hutchins will live on in the spirit of all who strive to see their dreams realized in stories well told."
A talented woman in a male-dominated industry Hutchins' achievements as a cinematographer were notable in an industry dominated by men. Casting director, producer and writer Sidra Smith posted on Instagram that she was left "devastated" by the news about Hutchins, with whom she worked on the TV mini-series "A Luv Tale." "It's hard out here for women cinematographers and this was a HUGE opportunity for her. She was so young and so talented. Halyna and I spent so much time together. She was so beautifully gracious and words cannot express how supportive she was to me," Smith wrote. "God bless her beautiful heart and soul."
Director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured in the incident and taken to Christus St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center for care. Baldwin was photographed looking distraught in the parking lot outside the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office on Thursday after being questioned.
Investigations remain ongoing, with many people asking how such a tragedy could happen on a film set -- 28 years after Bruce Lee's son Brandon Lee was accidentally killed on set by a firearm. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ukraine's consulate general in San Francisco was cooperating with US law enforcement representatives as they investigate and was reaching out to Hutchins' relatives "in order to provide the necessary consular and legal assistance."
Born in Ukraine, Hutchins lived in Los Angeles and graduated from the American Film Institute in 2015. She was credited with involvement in the production of 49 film, TV and video titles during her career, according to IMDB.

Halyna Hutchins: Film world mourns 'incredible artist' and seeks answers
Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who died when actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a film set, has been remembered as "an incredible artist".
Hutchins had been working as director of photography on the set of Rust.
American Cinematographer magazine had named her one of its rising stars in 2019, and she previously worked on 2020 independent superhero film Archenemy.
Archenemy director Adam Egypt Mortimer told BBC News the fact she had died on a set was "really unbelievable".
He said: "Halyna was an incredible artist who was just starting a career I think people were really starting to notice.
"The fact that she would be killed on a set in an accident like this is unfathomable. It just seems inconceivable."
Mortimer added: "The level of protocol and safety that we tend to have on any production of any size, when you get down to handling weapons, guns, it's so involved that the fact that a gun went off and killed Halyna is both shocking from an industry point of view and just absolutely tragic from the point of view of knowing this amazing artist who suddenly not with us."
He talked about her "integrity of wanting to make cinema" and that he had loved seeing her "grow as an artist".
Fellow cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt described Hutchins as "lovely, warm, funny, charming, outgoing", and praised her for being "so talented".
"What's so tragic is she's made beautiful films already but when you think about what was ahead of her, that is also so sad," she told BBC News.
"She was also a mum, which I think is very difficult," Goldschmidt added. "When I first met her I remember being really impressed, shocked even that this beautiful, creative, outgoing, enthusiastic talented cinematographer also is raising the child.
"I think for women in this industry it is very difficult. So I was very impressed that she was able to do that."
Alex Fedosov, another Ukrainian film-maker working Hollywood, said Hutchins was "rising fast in her career" and was "an artist and a visionary".
"She was so talented, a photography director with her own vision, her own strong ideas," he told BBC News Ukrainian.
"When we worked together on set, I was assistant director, I would rush her and say, 'Hurry up, we need to film this'. She would smile calmly but carry on in her own rhythm because she knew what she wanted to achieve."
Standards of safety
Fedosov added Hutchins was a "wonderful mother, first and foremost".
He also questioned how her death could have happened, saying: "Standards of safety in the US are very high. There is always an expert on set. There are always checks ahead of filming. Blanks are used sometimes to achieve a better effect on camera but it is always done with high degree of safety."
James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, said: "My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets. I pray this will never happen. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins and her family."
Director and cinematographer Elle Schneider wrote a thread on Twitter about the death of her "friend and rockstar cinematographer".
'Horrific loss'
"I don't have words to describe this tragedy. I want answers. I want her family to somehow find peace among this horrific, horrific loss," she said.
"Women cinematographers have historically been kept from genre film, and it seems especially cruel that one of the rising stars who was able to break through had her life cut short on the kind of project we've been fighting for."

A prop master explains how a prop gun can be dangerous
A film crew member died and another was injured after actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm on the set of the movie "Rust" in New Mexico on Thursday, authorities said.
But how can a prop gun kill someone?
"Prop weapons do have a dangerous factor to them even though they're a lot safer than using a live firearm on set," says Joseph Fisher, a prop master who works on movie sets and has handled weapons in the military and with the NYPD. "Typical prop load will be about 25 to 50% of the gunpowder in an actual projectile load that would be used in a regular weapon." "Even though there is no actual physical projectile mounted on the cartridge, there will be gas, heat and air coming out of the weapon since there is gunpowder load present, "and those can cause physical injury within 25 to 50 feet, depending on the load," Fisher added."
Fisher said those on set "take extreme caution with any kind of weapons, whether they be prop guns, blank guns, and anything in between.
"Typically, we will do a safety brief with the cast and crew. We'll introduce the weapon to the cast and crew, we'll let them examine it, we'll explain the safety precautions that go with each type of prop weapon," he told CNN.
In a scene involving prop guns, "we do safety distances, we try to keep the actors slightly misaligned with the weapon, so that if the person firing the weapon is firing straight this way, the other actor in frame is just slightly off," Fisher explained.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on “Rust”. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period,” the tweet posted to Brandon Bruce Lee’s verified account, run by the late actor’s sister, Shannon Lee, said.

Real bullets are used for certain shots, r354. It's generally for situations where you want to see a bullet strike an inanimate object and don't want to use effects, because they're never convincing. For instance, when you see someone shoot cans off a fence, what you're seeing is one shot of the actor pretending to shoot, then a second shot of a can actually being hit by a sharpshooter hired for the production. When they shoot with live rounds, no one else is supposed to be on set, it's supposed to be just the minimum crew plus props and armorer and plenty of Perspex shields. Sometimes you'll see a behind-the-scenes shot of a cinematographer or grip or someone in a bulletproof vest, if they have to be within 50 feet of where the bullet is going to land.
There isn't any reason why there should have been live rounds when Baldwin was filming. Obviously there were no safety protocols set up for live rounds, and everyone was still on set.
They had security so I can't see how a Trump supporter could have sneaked on set and tampered with the gun. My guess is that the props guy was a local who hadn't worked on films before, which is why he wasn't union, and he mistakenly thought it was a day for shooting live rounds and didn't know enough to look around him and realize that couldn't have been true.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | October 22, 2021 4:16 PM |
How do you face someone after you’ve killed their loved one? My day isn’t great, but at least I don’t have THAT on my plate. Awful. I don’t believe it was intentional.

Back when Jimmy Cagney was making those gangster movies for Warner Brothers in the 1930s, they used to use real machine guns.
The director would tell Cagney where to stand and when to step back before the shooting started.
There was a scene where Cagney was at the corner of a brick building, looking around it toward the camera, and the machine gunner was supposed to clip the side of the brick edge with bullets. Cagney became wary and decided that he would not do it and looking at the scene as it appeared finally on film, it looks like they spliced the two bits (Cagney and the bullets) together from 2 different shots.. Cagney was correct. When the guy holding the tommy gun shot, Cagney would have been hit if he had been where he was expected to be.
I saw old Cagney talk about this on an interview.
The shot may be up on Youtube, but I don't remember which movie it was from.

Alec Baldwin makes first statement on New Mexico shooting
From CNN’s Chloe Melas, Sandra Gonzalez and Andy Rose
Alec Baldwin has made his first public statement since a fatal shooting on the set of his new film on Thursday.
"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," Baldwin tweeted on Friday. "I'm fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna."
The actor was in New Mexico filming his western film "Rust," which he's starring in and producing. He discharged a prop firearm on the set, which resulted in the death of Halyna Hutchins, 42, the film's director of photography.
The film’s director Joel Souza, 48, was also injured in the incident.
The incident happened at about 1:50 p.m. local time Thursday, investigators said. The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said the investigation "remains open and active" and no charges have been filed."
According to investigators, it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged, a statement from law enforcement said. "Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged."
This type of incident has happened before on sets. While filming the movie "The Crow" in 1993, actor Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, was killed when struck by a bullet from a gun that was supposed to have just blanks, but had a bullet lodged in the barrel.
Even blanks can be deadly if fired at very close range. In 1984, actor John-Erik Hexum was playing around with a gun on the set of "Cover Up: Golden Opportunity" and died after putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger.

R546 and others who think that for some reason, a crazy Trumper singled out Baldwin among all the other Hollywood celebs who hated Trump: Here's a puzzle for you.
Those idiot MAGAts, who simultaneously are clever enough to arrange a murder that would have stumped Columbo, put a loaded gun into Baldwin's hand and vanished.
But look at the photo below, taken on the set not long before the shooting. There's apparently a scene where Baldwin's character gets gut-shot. Wouldn't this Trumptard conspiracy have worked better if they'd put the live ammo in the gun that was fired AT Baldwin, instead of BY Baldwin?
Or are the conspiring Trump-hordes -- they're everywhere -- just smart enough to get live ammo onto a closed set, but not quite smart enough to get it into the right gun?
You can ask them yourself, because there's a Trumper under your bed, right now, waiting to kill you because you spoke ill of his Orange God!

Union representing entertainment workers says it's "heartbroken and devastated" over Hutchins death
From CNN’s Kay Jones and Eric Fiegel
The union that represents entertainment workers said it is “heartbroken and devastated” to learn of the death of one of its members, Halyna Hutchins.
“Our entire alliance mourns this unspeakable loss with Halyna’s family, friends, and the Rust crew,” according to a statement from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada (IATSE).
IATSE also says that it’s activating their partnerships to provide support and resources to those who may need it.
“Creating a culture of safety requires relentless vigilance from every one of us, day in and day out. Please, if you see something, say something,” the statement said.
It also asked that anyone who feels unsafe on set to reach out through their safety hotline or their safety info app.
Hutchins was killed on Thursday after a prop firearm was discharged on the set of the movie "Rust."

This is not a thread about Trump, go away Baldwin cleaners.
His "support" for the widower and kid who lost his mom is a craven attempt to save his image and make them more amenable to settling a lawsuit.
Had he, as producer, chosen to run a safe set that adhered to normal gun safety protocols, that poor woman would be alive today.
Baldwin was a producer, not just an actor on this set.

[quote]On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”
These are the words of an actor whose only responsibility is to do and stand and say where and what he’s told to do and stand and say — the words of an actor covering his ass — NOT the words of a responsible producer.
Granted, Baldwin is a creative producer not a line producer, but still, even as an actor, you take responsibility for paying attention to a gun every time it is returned to your hand.
You ask to be shown the gun is unloaded if you’re about to rehearse and to be shown the gun is loaded with blanks if you’re about to shoot the scene.
ESPECIALLY if EVERYONE on set is aware the union crew walked because of pay or safety or for whatever reason THE DAY BEFORE — AND the person handing you the gun is non-union.

I don't own a gun, have never fired a gun, and don't give a shit about guns, but even I know: You never point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.

I've heard of advance publicity but this is a bit much.

[quote] His "support" for the widower and kid who lost his mom is a craven attempt to save his image and make them more amenable to settling a lawsuit.
If he sends support, it's an attempt to save his image. If he doesn't, he's a piece of scum who cares about no one.
The haters in here are just loony. DL is filled with crazy people nowadays.

Exactly, R567.
Completely avoidable tragedy.
There may not be video, one rumor is it was during a rehearsal.
Maybe Hilarious might want to stop pumping out kids if the money train just took such a hit. And the "family" branding needs a rest too. Alec is trying to hide behind his 8 year old to deflect from his own recklessness.
He was a PRODUCER not just an actor. If the union workers walked off over safety, practices should have been changed. Now a woman is dead and a little kid lost his mom.

Some people will do anything to get away from a media-whore wife and a houseful of screaming banshees!

This is so not hilarious, Alecito.

Ohio senatorial candidate J.D. Vance, who was once touted as a "reasonable" Republican:

The one we should be feeling sorry for is the prop guy who prepared the gun. Can you imagine?
by Anonymous | reply 583 | October 22, 2021 5:02 PM |
R555, you're argument doesn't hold water. A typical Trumptard would want Alec alive and to suffer.
And if you don't think that a Trumptard isn't capable of that kind of violent thinking and carrying it out, just last month, one of them tried to set fire to a local Democrats campaign office by tossing in a molotov cocktail. The whole block couldn't have gone up in flames. AND he got caught because security cameras captured his attempts. Yes, attempts. The first one he tossed in was a dud, so he went back and tossed in another that actually worked.
So, yes, an angry, bitter Trumptard is capable of anything.

Baldwin was most likely drunk at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | October 22, 2021 5:09 PM |
wow, some really deranged folks in this thread...
by Anonymous | reply 586 | October 22, 2021 5:09 PM |
Alec Baldwin is now this generation's Fatty Arbuckle.

[quote]I have reason to believe he was responsible for the Challenger explosion as well.
He's been suspiciously silent about the Lindbergh baby.

At the very least, Baldwin should be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Any non-celebrity would be.

How does a "prop" gun discharge any kind of projectile? Is it a real gun or not?
by Anonymous | reply 591 | October 22, 2021 5:19 PM |
We really need more movies with guns in them.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | October 22, 2021 5:20 PM |
As a producer he had responsibility for safety on the set esp after union workers walked off due to safety concerns.

The "I didn’t know the gun was loaded" defense is as lame as "The dog ate my homework".

If there was one live round in the chamber, somebody probably purposefully decided to set Alec up. That's what happens when you make it a habit to treat others like shit.

I hope he gains 500 more pounds.

Serial killer!

Shouldn't the prop master be inspecting the gun right before it's used in a scene and before he or she hands it off to the actor?
by Anonymous | reply 599 | October 22, 2021 5:23 PM |
R589, Yep. Very suspicious. This is definitely foul play by someone who had a grudge against Baldwin.
by Anonymous | reply 600 | October 22, 2021 5:23 PM |
wow, did Alec not know they were using real bullets?
Damn, now I wonder if he was drinking or under influence of drugs etc...

[quote] I will wait for the official report.
That's hilarious coming from the troll who posted more than 75 posts condemning Alec Baldwin and actually saying he did this on purpose. You usually just post about 25 posts a day on the meghan and Harry threads
God, you really are the biggest troll on DataLounge. You're disgusting and a trump supporter, who has also allowed syphilis to rot his brain.

[quote]Why would he aim the gun at the cinematographer and the director?
I know nothing about guns. Is it possible for a gun to misfire so badly that the bullet (if it was loaded with bullets) or casing or cartridge or whatever (if it was loaded with blanks) would hit people who are nowhere in the line of fire? If that's not possible, then I DO NOT understand how this happened unless Baldwin was screwing around and aimed the gun at those people as a "joke."
[quote]He looks like shit at [R162]. Fat and slovenly. Didn’t even bother to comb his hair (toopay). Is he going for the homeless look?
Umm, maybe you missed the part where it says he's playing a role in the movie in addition to being the director. Presumably, the character is supposed to look like that. Can you not read AT ALL?

[quote]Shouldn't the prop master be inspecting the gun right before it's used in a scene and before he or she hands it off to the actor?
There is supposed to be a designated person to oversee firearms on the set and inspect them before and after their use.
by Anonymous | reply 605 | October 22, 2021 5:52 PM |
Even if he thought the gun had blanks, what was he thinking pointing the gun in the direction of 2 people? Any idiot knows not to point a gun at another person, especially if pulling the trigger, unless you intend to kill or maim. You only point a gun at someone you intend to shoot. Anyone who handles guns knows this applies to unloaded guns and guns with safety on, as well as loaded guns.
