Facebook has announced the rebranded name would be FIow, which stands for Facebook, Instagram, Oculus, and WhatsApp. Flow would position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. A spokesperson for Facebook says the name change would take effect in early 2022.

Don't only companies in trouble do things like changing their name?
I'm still waiting and hoping for what happened to myspace to happen to Facebook. Surely at some point Facebook has to go out of fashion?? Not that whatever replaces it is likely to be better. That sociopath Zuckerberg will always have his bazillions but he wants power along with it.

|by Anonymous||reply 52||October 20, 2021 6:41 AM|
Myspace wasn't monetized the way Facebook is. It never became a commercialized, ad-driven venture.....it was a more pure simple form of early social media. So when people got fickle and bored with it, Myspace died a quick death. It didn't have tentacles into commerce, business communication, or anything to sustain it's usefulness.
But then again I consider Facebook to be useless also. There's nothing useful about it that I can't easily accomplish some other way. So Zuckerberg can just fuck off.

It's just the parent company, Facebook Inc., that's changing its name. The Facebook website, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, etc., will all keep their current branding.

The good news is that if they're rebranding, they're very likely going to lose quite a bit of their userbase. No one likes it when a social media product rebrands, just as MySpace or Tumblr or FourSquare.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||October 20, 2021 2:16 PM|
Again, none of the subsidiary businesses are rebranding. Just the parent corporation. The Facebook people use will still be Facebook.

r76, read the article.
[quote]The coming name change, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th, but could unveil sooner, is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail. The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more.
[quote]In July, he told The Verge that, over the next several years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”
That means the rebranding is going to affect Facebook, and IG and Whatsapp, too. He's trying to focus on tangible products and brands and is moving away from social media.

Something a little retro
|by Anonymous||reply 80||October 20, 2021 3:13 PM|
r79, Your quote (why didn't you link to the source?) is as misleading as the original reporting in The Verge, confusing the names of the Facebook Inc., the corporate holding parent, with Facebook, the original media platform. This is from The Guardian:
"Under the plans, Facebook would change the name of its holding company but not that of its eponymous social media platform, known internally as the “big blue app”. As well as its founding site, the company also owns Instagram, WhatsApp and the virtual reality brand Oculus."

|by Anonymous||reply 82||October 20, 2021 3:23 PM|
It was irritating that they coopted a standard term.
A "facebook" used to be a yearbook or other directory that had pix of people with their names and some limited bio info. It took me years to stop referring to them as such because morons couldn't follow context and would get confused by the reference, requiring an explanation.
