I was lamenting how awful “Saturday Night Live” is and feeling nostalgic for the original cast…and that got me thinking about who would play the “Sex and the City” girls if it was the 1977 cast (the trio of Gilda, Jane, and Laraine).
First, we would need a female guest host since unlike today there were not double digit cast numbers. I vote for Candice Bergen since she hosted three times early on…or Jill Clayburgh since she hosted twice. With that in mind:
Carrie: Laraine Newman. Not the obvious first choice, but she has the voice and the look and a kind of twitchy vacancy…and Carrie doesn’t really need to be funny, just announce things.
Samantha: Gilda. Again, not the obvious choice but Gilda could do anything and she would run with this! Plus, I love when Gilda did a little glamour. I would love to see her interpretation of Samantha.
I’m conflicted on the following two…Obviously Jane would excel at both, but I think Miranda is more of a satire-ready character than Charlotte, hence:
Miranda: Jane Curtin. She was made for self-righteous indignation.
Charlotte: The perfect throwaway role for a guest host. They would put a brunette wig and a sweater set on Candice and that would be that.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
