The Queen's Doctors Have Told Her It's Time to Give Up Her Nightly Martini

Queen Elizabeth II is going (mostly) sober. According to a report from Vanity Fair's royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, the monarch's doctors have told her it's time to retire her routine of having a nightly drink.

Citing two sources close to the Queen, Vanity Fair reported that "doctors have advised the Queen to forgo alcohol except for special occasions to ensure she is as healthy as possible for her busy autumn schedule and ahead of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations next June."

And, just in case you're not up on your Jubilee terminology, next year's Platinum Jubilee will mark the Queen's 70th (!!!) year on the throne. It's a huge event and the Queen's doctors want to make sure she's healthy and ready to celebrate just as much as she deserves to.

"The Queen has been told to give up her evening drink which is usually a martini," a family friend told Nicholl. "It’s not really a big deal for her, she is not a big drinker but it seems a trifle unfair that at this stage in her life she’s having to give up one of very few pleasures."

Although the Queen rarely imbibes in public, her private drinking habits have been reported on a lot over the years. At one point, reports actually suggested that the Queen drank four cocktails every day, but, as Vanity Fair notes, those claims have been disputed. Darren McGrady, who served as the Queen's royal chef from 1982-1993 has gone on the record saying that the monarch almost never drank at lunch and usually just had a small glass of sweet German wine with dinner.

At 95?

I'd tell them to fuck off.

If I lived to be 95, the rest would be gravy.

And I'm drinking that martini.

by Anonymousreply 1October 18, 2021 2:08 AM

Four drinks a day is pretty standard for that generation, of which the Queen is one of the few left.

by Anonymousreply 2October 18, 2021 2:08 AM

I am pretty sure the Queen Mother drank until the day she died at age 101.

by Anonymousreply 3October 18, 2021 2:10 AM

At 95 it would be hard to stop something you enjoy

by Anonymousreply 4October 18, 2021 2:11 AM

She shouldn't give it up. If she's lived to her mid-90s having a daily drink...obviously it's not causing any problems.

by Anonymousreply 5October 18, 2021 2:13 AM

Prince Charles is the one they need to tell to quit drinking.

by Anonymousreply 6October 18, 2021 2:13 AM

That’s her tonic .

by Anonymousreply 7October 18, 2021 2:14 AM

Oh fuck that. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

by Anonymousreply 8October 18, 2021 2:14 AM

R3 Funny enough there is a book writer by one of the Queen Mum's former Equerries who says that her staff and family knew she wasn't going to last long when the Christmas before she died she didn't have a drop of alcohol. Even over 100 she would have at least one cocktail before lunch.

by Anonymousreply 9October 18, 2021 2:17 AM

I remember reading somewhere a while back that the Queen had stopped drinking at state dinners and public receptions sometime after she turned 80 because she was afraid of getting tipsy and falling. You can tell at events before COVID that she was just drinking ice water.

by Anonymousreply 10October 18, 2021 2:19 AM

She’s a g-damn lush and that’s why her family’s so fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 11October 18, 2021 2:21 AM

An old chestnut:

"Whilst waiting to be served her Gin & Tonic, the Queen Mum could hear two openly gay members of her staff arguing in the hallway outside her sitting room. Impatient at being kept waiting so long the Queen Mother eventually called out "When you two old Queens have finished arguing, this Old Queen wants her Gin."

by Anonymousreply 12October 18, 2021 2:21 AM

Time for Liz to make the switch to cannabis! ;) Serious, though, even in pop-culture, it amazes me that the long-ago sitcom "I Love Lucy" aired the episode where Lucy and Ethel tried to get into Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen, and to think how that's still a shared current newspiece since the same Elizabeth was reigning all ready at that time.

by Anonymousreply 13October 18, 2021 2:22 AM

One drink is normal

by Anonymousreply 14October 18, 2021 2:26 AM

@r12, If the Queen wants her drink she'll just get one of those "old queens" to sneak the real queen a nip

by Anonymousreply 15October 18, 2021 2:27 AM

There is evidence that a low-moderate amount of alcohol can help the aging with vascular related problems like dementia, heart attack and stroke. If she can keep it to the lower amount it likely will do her no harm, and may have some added benefit. I am a teetotaler, but have considered adding a small amount because the evidence is so compelling.

by Anonymousreply 16October 18, 2021 2:33 AM

Reading the article, the doctors allegedly didn't say she had to give up drinking but that she might want to limit it to special occasions only. If the Queen is on medication for blood related issues or arthritis this is probably why. Alcohol can inhibit those medications.

by Anonymousreply 17October 18, 2021 2:36 AM

r13 It's amazing how long Elizabeth has been Queen. She came to the throne shortly after I Love Lucy started production, and she's still Queen today!

by Anonymousreply 18October 18, 2021 2:51 AM

Sad last days !

by Anonymousreply 19October 18, 2021 2:51 AM

R18 You basically have to be 80 to remember another monarch on the throne....it's truly shocking to think how long she has been Queen.

by Anonymousreply 20October 18, 2021 2:54 AM

I love that MSN. com put a 🍸 emoji in their link.

by Anonymousreply 22October 18, 2021 3:03 AM

I guess it depends on what meds she's taking too.

by Anonymousreply 23October 18, 2021 3:09 AM

One beer with lunch is hardly drinking.

by Anonymousreply 24October 18, 2021 3:28 AM

I took care of Her Majesty's martini.

by Anonymousreply 25October 18, 2021 3:54 AM

Off with their heads...

by Anonymousreply 26October 18, 2021 4:26 AM

We consider ourselves blessed in our constitution. We tell ourselves our parliament is the envy of the world, but we live in the health and well-being of the sovereign as much as any vizier does the sultan.

by Anonymousreply 27October 18, 2021 4:40 AM

I imagine her lolling around in diamonds and furs, making fun of the peasants. Then when she goes out in public putting on her matchy-matchy frautogs.

Sounds like a good sitcom. A debauched royal family behind the scenes, but a dreary public image. "Royal Flush"?

by Anonymousreply 28October 18, 2021 5:27 AM

R28 The King is dead, long live the King is basically how the system works in terms of a change in monarch. We do not live in the health and well-being of the monarchy. When the Queen dies nothing will change in terms of parliament and how the country is governed.

by Anonymousreply 29October 18, 2021 6:53 AM

R28 You should watch the Windsors on Netflix. It's hilarious though the Queen does not appear.

by Anonymousreply 30October 18, 2021 6:56 AM

“Royal Lush”

by Anonymousreply 31October 18, 2021 6:59 AM

Really Vanity Fair? At 95 she deserves a drink at night. Just another made up load of bollocks to get readers.

by Anonymousreply 32October 18, 2021 7:03 AM

GOOD. 5 YEARS TOPS and she'll be gone. And the UK Govt will be forced to hold a Republic referendum. We're loving the billboards everywhere. It's happening!

They don’t want her pissing herself and picking fights with strangers. They had enough of that with Princess Margaret.

by Anonymousreply 34October 18, 2021 7:07 AM

The new ones are particularly striking. There's now clearly creative talent being invested.

Charles has all the charisma of a frog prince who will never turn into a young handsome one. Will the monarchy turn into a technical and financial draining annoyance? He has all the gravitas and moral integrity of a flea. He'll end up in a stall in front of Buckingham Palace hawking CBEs to billionaire Saudi and Russian tourists,

by Anonymousreply 36October 18, 2021 7:09 AM

[quote] "Prince Charles is the one they need to tell to quit drinking."

Now THIS is the fucking TRUTH.

I like the sauce, but Jesus...

by Anonymousreply 37October 18, 2021 7:09 AM

You should see what they put in the martini!

by Anonymousreply 38October 18, 2021 7:17 AM

Whilst I possess a considerable knowledge of the BRF from Victoria to the present Monarch, I'm asking those sterling UK authorities, do equrries and staff all sign NDAs before working at the Palace generally and the RF in particular? What surprises me is the equerry who worked for Charles wrote quite a fragrant memoir, and I wondered at the time whether his writing it and publishing it wasn't a violation of an NDA he signed when he accepted employment at the Palace?

by Anonymousreply 39October 18, 2021 7:20 AM

^ Even I know the answer to that, yes, or they'd all be writing books. I'm guessing that the ones who do write books and aren't sued have too much on the Royals and use it as leverage like Paul Burrell

by Anonymousreply 40October 18, 2021 7:40 AM

According to her ex butler that useless old parasite sucks up the gin as fast as she sucks up the tax dollars, 5 a day at minimum. May that useless old cunt die of fatty liver disease any day now.

by Anonymousreply 41October 18, 2021 8:39 AM

We don’t use the dollar in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 42October 18, 2021 9:34 AM

Tax pounds then....the point is the same. The bitter old parasite is useless.

by Anonymousreply 43October 18, 2021 9:38 AM

[quote]it seems a trifle unfair that at this stage in her life she’s having to give up one of very few pleasures

She's the queen, I'm sure she is not living a life of only a "very few" pleasures.

by Anonymousreply 44October 18, 2021 9:43 AM

R43, Wow. For an American you seem a bit obsessed with an old woman you will never meet. I strongly favour a republic, but I wish her no harm. What’s your beef?

by Anonymousreply 45October 18, 2021 9:45 AM

I hope she told the royal medic to fuck that noise. The old gal made it to 95 with pretty impeccable health.

by Anonymousreply 46October 18, 2021 10:48 AM

What the fuck is Royalty?

Her ancestors murdered people? Wow so Royal.

I hate everyone who takes money for no purpose and she is useless. All Royal families are.

And I am not an American R45.

by Anonymousreply 47October 18, 2021 11:18 AM

R47 Wow it's almost like human history is a bloody thing....and of course your not American...

In all seriousness how many people have died as a result of Western interference in the middle east, how many Americans have died during covid? Like lets get real here people have been killed and died as a result of power and politics for all of human history. America is just as much a colonial power as the UK was, except we know longer call it colonialism we call it spreading democracy.....

Anyways, I agree that hereditary position in the 21st century is crazy, but in Europe royals still have a role in being figure heads, they remind people that there is more to national life than just politics and they do bring light to a lot of the country's unsung heroes through charity visits and awards.

by Anonymousreply 48October 18, 2021 4:35 PM

Doctors have advised her to cancel her visit to Northern Ireland this week.

Whoever did her diary planning needs firing. The appearance of her walking stick this week would also indicate something is up with her.

by Anonymousreply 49October 20, 2021 11:08 PM

She's still going to the climate summit though. If having to listen to climate change speeches in Glasgow during November don't have her back to at least a nightly martini then something is definitely wrong.

by Anonymousreply 50October 20, 2021 11:18 PM

The Queen could go through a fraternity hazing and drink those college boys under the table.

by Anonymousreply 51October 21, 2021 1:57 AM

^^Princess Margaret actually did that and then they ran a train on her, the old slapper.

by Anonymousreply 52October 21, 2021 2:43 AM

I think she will pass within the next 12 months. Maybe sooner. Many people die after the loss of a long-term spouse. Royalty is no different. Especially her, in this immense spotlight. Not sure that I am ready for this! She has been there for my entire life. But, it will come. Sooner rather than later I'm affraid. Prepare yourself!

by Anonymousreply 53October 22, 2021 7:48 PM

Pass what, R53?

Wind? A kidney stone? A slow moving vehicle on the M1?

by Anonymousreply 54October 22, 2021 8:03 PM

All fun and games R54 until THAT moment. IT will be the biggest event in our lifetime. Make no mistake about it. 24 hr news coverage for days nonstop. I remember when Diana died. I was in a casino in Tahoe. Everything stopped when the news flashed. It was surreal.

by Anonymousreply 55October 22, 2021 8:12 PM

I no longer drink and haven't for years. But I've already told myself: Once I get to 80? I'm drinking again. It's not the right thing for me now, but it will be then.

She should drink that damn martini.
