Interesting that the show that follows the live broadcast tonight was the scheduled opening of the James Bond flick that happened this week. Postponed due to COVID.

The live show will be on in its regular time-slot, R3. Nothing has changed, SNL has been rebroadcasting past episodes at 10pm in certain markets for several years now.

Irony = Gay Rami won't play gay. And the Sleepy Town Mattress would have been way funnier if it was a gay couple instead of a straight couple. Overall it is good to see them using Andrew Dismukes this season because he barely got used last season..

Funniest episode in a loooong time. Nothing was cringey and even the less funny skits were bizarre enough to be amusing.

When a Saturday Night Live host really commits to the job, even a sketch with a simple premise can feel surprising. Consider last night’s “Mattress Store,” in which Rami Malek, the show’s latest celebrity guest, and cast member Aidy Bryant play a couple searching for the right mattress by enacting every over-the-top scenario they might encounter in bed. Their skits escalate predictably, and Malek matches Bryant’s melodramatic line readings, leaning into the absurdity. When the two act out a lovers’ spat, the Oscar winner catches the audience off guard by miming masturbation under a blanket. When the pair pretend an intruder has entered their bedroom and shot Malek’s character, he flops across the mattress, clutching his heart in a pitch-perfect piece of physical comedy.

As a lauded movie star promoting a film (the latest James Bond entry, No Time to Die), Malek may have appeared a typical choice for an SNL host. But he was largely untested as a comic performer—the last time audiences remember seeing him tell a joke on-screen might have been his turn as a pharaoh in the Night at the Museum films. He’s better known for embodying complicated, eccentric characters—the hacker protagonist of Mr. Robot, for instance, or Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. And unlike Kim Kardashian West, Elon Musk, or some other recent hosts, Malek had little personal brand to uphold or reputation to launder.

That led to a show that was both looser and stronger than anything in SNL’s 47th season thus far. The show’s writers seem to have been inspired by their host’s gameness and greenness. They let him take the reins in outlandish parts that would typically go to a cast member (any other episode with “Mattress Store” would probably have inserted the host in Bowen Yang’s role as the perplexed salesman, for example) and capitalized on his intense screen presence. Other times, they treated him like a talented utility player and a blank slate. The dual approach helped stitch together SNL’s huge cast, and was consistently, unusually funny.

Of course, Malek put in considerable effort. The actor enriched his sketches by conveying every part, however small, with the precision he puts into his dramatic roles. In “Bug Assembly,” his seventh grader felt like a nerdy child chasing validation. In “Celeb School Game Show,” he delivered a hammy impression of cast member Pete Davidson, gesticulating wildly, all while Davidson performed a subdued take on Malek. And in the delightfully strange “Angelo,” Malek wrung weirdness from his near-wordless role as a dancer supporting new cast member Aristotle Athari’s “international singing sensation.” Even with his Bond co-star Daniel Craig appearing in the scene, Malek didn’t fade into the background. At one point he grabbed ribbons, one of which was tangled. Maybe the knot was meant to be there or maybe it was unintentional; Malek held it like an object he didn’t understand but cherished anyway.

As my colleague David Sims noted, SNL is juggling its largest cast ever, shifting away from weekly political commentary, and trying to remain fresh. The series has added three new featured players, recruited a new generation of digital-short-makers, and sought unconventional—as well as first-time—hosts. But amid a stacked lineup of stellar performers vying for screen time, a host picked for star power such as Kardashian West requires everyone else to navigate around them, while even an excellent comic actor like Owen Wilson can get sidelined into playing forgettable background characters.

Some of you say things like "good they are using ____ a lot this season" and "I wish they would use ---- more..." and its 4+ decades into this show and you never figured out that the the actors get used in proportion to each actors ability to come up with popular characters and skits and performances??

It shows low lowbrow the demographic of SNL is when the skits labelled ‘hilarious’ were banal in the extreme — desperately unfunny — and the single one of genuine inspiration and wonderful underplaying by Aristotle and Malek — ‘Angelo and Todd’, was the least popular on social media. In England this one would have been cherished, but Americans need to ‘understand’ a situation before they can laugh about it.

Rami has done quite a bit of comedy. The War at Home sitcom, the Night at the Museum trilogy. Even the Tom Hanks romcom Larry Crowne.

The problem with Bowen Yang is that he has no real talent. He plays hysterical queens and slow burn queens. That's it. And he's not good at it, just pedestrian. I've seen hundreds of random guys at bars or parties that are far funnier. He's just a comfortable stereotype for the masses.

If the posters hate Bowen on SNL, they will despise him on Awkwafina's Comedy Central series.

Bowen really sticks out as being the most unprofessional performer in the series, everyone else is excellent. The grandma played by Lori Tan Chinn is hysterical, as is BD Wong as Nora's dad. It's obvious these other performers have a range, Bowen does not.

Bowen is so one-note, even in this series, he's a mincing screeching queen.

There are always SNL sketches which are cut. Many years ago, a friend was set to appear in a sketch with Alec Baldwin. A group of us were at a friends watching the show, the host was all set to record the episode. Then, the friend called to say the sketch they were going to appear in, was cut. This happens all the time on SNL.

Some of the sketches performed during the dress rehearsal never make it to the live show.

Usually there are anywhere from 2 to 4 sketches cut between dress rehearsal and live show. They are cut for various reasons, timing, audience reaction, the host’s comfort level with the material.

I saw a dress rehearsal once - Blake Lively episode in 2009. One of the cut sketches showed up in an episode three years later - Sophia Vergara in 2012.

Interesting and very troubling that Che’s ugly overrated ass gets a free pass for what he did to Simone Biles. I hope the show suffers from ratings even lower than the season premier throughout the whole season. Fuck SNL and the viewers who give Che a free pass.

I love Bowen Yang both on SNL and Nora’s Broad City show. He’s funny, just makes me laugh.

Can Bowen ever play a straight man?

That's the sign of a good performer, when the person doesn't keep playing themselves or keeps portraying the same types of characters over and over again. Perhaps on SNL, Bowen should have stuck to writing.

BD Wong is gay, yet on Awkwafina's Nora from Queens series, he plays a straight father with a New Yawk accent. BD is great in this role.

On the other hand, Bowen on this series, it's just more of the same. Bowen plays a screeching queen, Nora's cousin, a man who is always yelling about something, wildly gesticulating and is an entitled snob.
