Man kills Realtor, Self after regretting buying House

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Non-lethal baton shells still litter the driveway at 74 Bolling Road in Portsmouth, the scene of a tragic and bizarre murder-suicide Friday night.

“He bought the house site unseen from Alabama, moved in here Thursday and called a real estate agent Friday to return the house," a neighbor told News 3.

by Anonymousreply 1October 13, 2021 2:56 AM

The neighbor says 84-year-old Albert Baglione had just moved into the home before the tragedy unfolded. Soren Arn-Oelschlegel, a real estate agent, drove to the home to help the man displeased with his home purchase.

Police then responded to the home around 6 p.m.

That's when Baglione said he killed his realtor.

Arn-Oelschlegel, who worked for Long & Foster in Suffolk, was shot dead in the home.

"He called his son after he shot the real estate agent," said the neighbor.

I'm guessing Gramps didn't have all his faculties when he bought the place. The property queen may have been a pillar of the gay community (and everybody probably had had him), but I wonder if he was much of a realtor.

I'll reserve judgment until I've seen bathroom and kitchen pics.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2021 3:18 AM

r14 bug guess what, the old man liked it!

by Anonymousreply 18October 13, 2021 3:18 AM

Why is an 84-year-old man buying a new home in another state, unseen? And why couldn't he just suck it up if it wasn't what he expected? He wasn't going to be around much longer, even if he didn't kill himself.

by Anonymousreply 19October 13, 2021 3:19 AM

One just knows the old man was the type who says "realt-tor".

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2021 3:21 AM

Formica countertops 🤢

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2021 3:21 AM

He probably wasn't playing with a full deck. A few strokes, some delerium, some dementia.

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2021 3:21 AM

Poor Soren. He never should have left St. Olaf.

by Anonymousreply 23October 13, 2021 3:22 AM

Prob the realtor scammed the old man.

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2021 3:23 AM

How hard would it have been to request the realtor do a walk through on FaceTime with the buyer? I probably would have insisted if I were the realtor, just to avoid issues. Old people are often too trusting and fall for a lot of online and phone scams. It’s sad because there are things you can’t just cancel or return.

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2021 3:23 AM

Yikes! No excuse to kill someone just because they are a realtor. Successful realtors in general are immoral, slimy types which could lead to negative interactions with clients they've screwed over, but this is sad. No need to take others' lives.

by Anonymousreply 26October 13, 2021 3:25 AM

You're assuming the old guy was "rational" and "in his right mind". I'm guessing that even if Soren cut a corner (he is a realtor), Gramps probably was not cognitively all that intact.

by Anonymousreply 27October 13, 2021 3:26 AM

I wonder who’s gonna get their stuff.

by Anonymousreply 28October 13, 2021 3:26 AM

Well I suppose the old man did have room for entertaining in that house. This story has entertained me.

by Anonymousreply 29October 13, 2021 3:26 AM

At least the old guy called his son after shooting the realtor. I'm sure that didn't go well, either.

by Anonymousreply 30October 13, 2021 3:29 AM

The nosy neighbor is lucky they weren't shot.

That house is a hate crime.

by Anonymousreply 35October 13, 2021 3:35 AM

[quote] At least the old guy called his son after shooting the realtor. I'm sure that didn't go well, either.

I know of a widower who couldn't take living without his recently deceased, so he called his daughter, who was a 30-minute drive away, to tell her he was going to kill himself. She, of course, rushed to get to her father's house. By the time she arrived he'd shot himself.

by Anonymousreply 36October 13, 2021 3:35 AM

Should be "Gay as a basket of kittens"

by Anonymousreply 37October 13, 2021 3:35 AM

'Son. a pansy assed stool pusher sold be a fuckin dump of a house so I shot the fag!'

by Anonymousreply 38October 13, 2021 3:40 AM

This is sad. Nobody deserves to go out likes this.

by Anonymousreply 39October 13, 2021 3:46 AM

I’ll stereotype that since this man was 84 years old, white (given the Italian surname) and from Alabaster he was probably a gun crazy Trump supporter. Let’s not bring the political into it you’ll say. Fair enough. However the fact remains that elderly Republicans are crazy and dangerous around guns. Tragic this young man’s life is over for nothing.

by Anonymousreply 44October 13, 2021 11:07 AM

Now, I am probably going off topic here, but I think people's social media obsession really fucks with their flight instinct.

If I see an angry old man waving a gun around, I'll be having the space of two towns between us within ten seconds.

by Anonymousreply 45October 13, 2021 11:08 AM

That house was hideous.

by Anonymousreply 46October 13, 2021 11:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 47October 13, 2021 11:12 AM

He was old, that house probably fit his old man needs purposes, but he was too proud to admit that he's old and in need of such a house.

by Anonymousreply 48October 13, 2021 11:14 AM

Did he try to return the house without a receipt?

by Anonymousreply 49October 13, 2021 11:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 53October 13, 2021 12:50 PM

Realtors are all scum anyway.

by Anonymousreply 54October 13, 2021 12:51 PM

It's understandable.

He discovered there wasn't room in the freezer for his wife.

by Anonymousreply 55October 13, 2021 12:54 PM

Alabama gramps bought what he could afford.

I guess he expected a palace for $184,000.

by Anonymousreply 56October 13, 2021 12:54 PM

We don't actually know he killed the realtor because he hated the house, we only have some unnamed neighbor's word for it, but the neighbor also said the guy called his son after he murdered the realtor, and how would he even know that? It all happened inside. He wouldn't have seen any of it.

by Anonymousreply 57October 13, 2021 12:58 PM

I'm sure that the NRA will love this but, shouldn't there be an age limit or age-related cognitive test, for gun ownership? We don't let some people drive if they get too unsteady. Why do we allow guns?

by Anonymousreply 73October 13, 2021 4:34 PM

[quote] We don't let some people drive if they get too unsteady. Why do we allow guns?

The NRA even supports guns for the blind. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 74October 13, 2021 5:55 PM

R74 is correct. A friend of mine is legally blind - he can't drive due to his poor eyesight. He's in his early 50s and has always been legally blind.

But you'd better believe he has an AR 15 in his bedroom.

by Anonymousreply 75October 13, 2021 6:09 PM

Killer listing!

by Anonymousreply 76October 13, 2021 6:12 PM

[quote] moved in here Thursday and called a real estate agent Friday to return the house,

So the old guy thought he could just ‘return the house’ like you’d return an article of clothing that was the wrong size? Lol

Wonder what his gripe was? The pics look clean and neat, fresh paint and new carpeting etc. I don’t see the problem.

by Anonymousreply 77October 13, 2021 6:23 PM

[quote] the neighbor also said the guy called his son after he murdered the realtor, and how would he even know that?

Interesting, R57.

by Anonymousreply 78October 13, 2021 6:42 PM

Isn't there a "return period" built into most house purchase contracts? It may vary by state, but I know that was discussed at the signing for at least one house purchase.

by Anonymousreply 79October 13, 2021 7:08 PM

Not for houses, R79.

by Anonymousreply 80October 13, 2021 7:49 PM

Real estate agents are borderline sociopaths.

Just saying.

by Anonymousreply 81October 13, 2021 7:55 PM

Houses are specifically listed in contracts as being sold "as is." It's rare for any realtor or agency to agree to a buyback/return unless some serious issues emerge soon after purchase, or unless they face legal action for something they did not resolve from a punch list. (HGTV's Alison Cuntoria agreed to this for one of the buyers she had, because their $2M house was constantly leaking and falling apart.)

But otherwise, the period between the acceptance of an offer and the closing is intended to allow for this kind of review - inspections and the like. The terms of that can vary by state - I've gone through legal review, which was in IL and was just the two parties agreeing to terms (based on inspection and also the bank's appraisal) and through escrow, a similar process for CA transactions that in some ways was much shorter and in some ways more difficult. But both allow for the "oh, shit, this isn't right, we've changed our mind" moment. BEFORE closing.

Not sure how this man thought he could return a house, or why buying one unseen was a wise decision.

by Anonymousreply 82October 13, 2021 7:59 PM

[quote] That house is a hate crime. —Tasteful Friends

Yes it most certainly is

by Anonymousreply 83October 13, 2021 8:02 PM

[quote] Did he try to return the house without a receipt?

Yes, he was only being offered store credit, not a full refund and he had to fill out a long form and show his driver’s license too

by Anonymousreply 84October 13, 2021 8:06 PM

Let's make lemonade out of this lemon of a tragedy.

The first thing I would do is convert the garage into a new master suite!

I would repaint the kitchen cabinets white and add some new hardware.

The front stoop needs a new brick make-over.

Oh and someone needs to do something about all the red stains on the recently refinished hardwood floors. Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 85October 13, 2021 8:16 PM

I bet gramps had a problem with spending and thought he could just return the house like a pair of slacks from Sears.

by Anonymousreply 86October 13, 2021 8:19 PM

The house itself does not look that bad. I would not have bought it based on what I see of the neighbor's property.

by Anonymousreply 87October 13, 2021 8:28 PM

Come on, old man. The house isn't that bad. Certainly better than Hell where you're going.

How come real estate agents gets such a bad rap? Mine was great...the only thing he did that bugged me was encourage me to use a mortgage lender he worked with in the past. The guy was fine, but I'm a veteran and had been referred to a veteran-owned company familiar with VA loans. My realtor disuaded me from using them, has me use his guy, and then that company sold my loan a whole 2 months later!

by Anonymousreply 92October 13, 2021 8:47 PM

Now it's haunted.

by Anonymousreply 93October 13, 2021 8:50 PM

R92: I have bought/sold 4 properties of my own and two for estates. I have had multiple agents and best luck when I had a referral or was acquainted with someone. Where I didn't have that background, I went to open houses both to look at houses and to "interview" agents. I encountered many obvious slime balls. I also knew of people who had been talked into more house than they could afford or were given the "cheaper than rent" speech which neglects all manner of things a buyer needs to be prepared to cover. I had one agent who really didn't seem to do much, but it was the end of a hot real estate market and the house found a buyer in reasonable time.

There was a couple who repped a lot of homes in my area of Atlanta who developed a coke problem, ran into litigation from buyers, ultimately alienated their associates and become toxic in the area---they managed to find houses to sell elsewhere and eventually went into resort property. People like this survive even if a market cools. Even with a referral, I'm leery of a broker until I've had a chance to really interact with them. I have a neighbor who is notorious for getting people to cut their price if a place does not sell immediately--she no longer has listings in the building, but she manages to find them in relatively random places. There's lots of reasons to be wary of a relator.

Real estate is a huge purchase and buyers as well as sellers often feel social pressure not to break a bad relationship.

by Anonymousreply 94October 13, 2021 9:03 PM

R92 Any agent pressuring you to use a person of theirs can be a bit of a red flag.

by Anonymousreply 95October 13, 2021 9:09 PM

[quote] Not sure how this man thought he could return a house, or why buying one unseen was a wise decision.

Buying houses sight unseen after an online “tour” has become more common in today’s insane market. Not only that but people are waiving appraisals and inspections too. It’s crazy out there.

by Anonymousreply 100October 13, 2021 10:13 PM

The realtor actually had put the house under contract, so he was lying about the sale. He hadn't sold it. Usually you can pull out depending on the inspection unless it wasn't a contingency---still, realtors and sellers will pressure people into settling for repairs.

The buyer has a hair replacement business--bad toupees or obvious plugs? There's something about the Southeast---you'll never see more bad toupees anywhere than you will at Atlanta airport.

by Anonymousreply 101October 13, 2021 10:27 PM

Old age means a diminishment of our faculties, including judgement and inhibition. It's why the elderly are so easily fleeced, and why they start talking and behaving inappropriately when in the past they knew their manners. It doesn't even have to be full-blown dementia to be a problem.

In my neighborhood, two men were shot and killed by their elderly fathers who they had living with them. One became paranoid and impulsively fired as his son came in through the door. The other one had asked his son for cable tv. The son was broke, and told dad he couldn't afford it. Dad took it hard. Really hard. He grabbed his gun and shot his son. He died himself in jail just a few days later.

That’s with the faux brick in the dining room? And the drone shots…it looks like it’s in a flood plain.

by Anonymousreply 116October 14, 2021 12:52 AM

[quote] looks like it’s in a flood plain

It is, but just a “minimal” one according to the listing:

and

[quote]Backyard is gated for privacy. (minimal flood insurance if lender required)

maybe the astronomical flood insurance quote is what made the old guy snap? It’s required if you’re in a flood plain and it’s not “minimal.”

you mean they've all fucked

by Anonymousreply 123October 14, 2021 2:57 AM

I did something similar—needed a hotel room for a visiting guest from our of town and went on one of those websites like Priceline. Hotel looked fine and wasn’t looking for fancy—just something like Motel 6. We went there and the place was a total dump. It was one where people lived there as a residence. The photos were totally deceptive. We tried to cancel but they gave us the runaround. Ultimately my friend stayed and the room was decent. But i would never have rented a room there if I had seen it in person. I learned to read reviews after that. Once they have your money, you’re fucked.

by Anonymousreply 124October 14, 2021 3:09 AM

I wonder what he hated so much about the house that he couldn't see from the pictures. The neighborhood? The smell? Was it the worst house in the neighborhood? Did it look poor compared to the photos? It looks like a decent, small, repainted, older house on a large lot. How different could it have been from the listing photos, which he saw? Maybe he overpaid for the area or maybe it had problems he didn't realize?

by Anonymousreply 125October 14, 2021 7:27 AM

R125 I wonder too.

The biggest thing I can think of is the house is tiny, only 750 Sq.Ft. but the pictures make the house look bigger. $160,000 seems like a lot for such a small house. But I don't know the area and it does have a huge plot of land.

by Anonymousreply 126October 14, 2021 8:23 AM

R126 That seems like a strong possibility. I didn't realize it was so small. The photos really make it look bigger! Scary thought if that was what triggered the guy.

by Anonymousreply 127October 14, 2021 9:09 AM

Gramps met the realtor and he felt something funny down there. He thought oh my gosh I haven't had a hardie for ages and it's for a queer real estate agent, he turned me gay. Blam blam.

by Anonymousreply 128October 14, 2021 9:09 AM

The house is small and very basic, and the front porch and garage need a new coat of paint, but inside everything looks reasonably up-to-date and comfortable. 750 sq feet is fine for one old person (esp. from Alabama); it's like having the equivalent of a 1-bedroom apartment, but with decent-sized lawns and a longer view (if you trimmed the bushes) of the river and its wetlands.

It doesn't have much of a crawl space (and nothing under the garage--so forget converting that space) and sits in a flood plain. On one side, it's rather close to a much bigger house. Lots of negatives here. I'm guessing that it's a rental that recently was updated.

I’m guessing overall size too was the first rage-maker. Especially all those interior rooms. If you don’t understand the ways realty listings use special camera lenses to make a closet look like the Taj Mahal, you’re going to be shocked when you see it all in person. He was expecting some space and arrived to find it has the interior dimensions of an RV.

Realtor thought he was selling to Andrew Neighbors, and it turned out it was Jed Clampett.

by Anonymousreply 135October 14, 2021 1:54 PM

That must be the tool shed.. That truly sux for the realtor.

A Lot of the photos are wide angle shots that exaggerate the size of things. It’s hard to assess actual size given the shots, especially of the interior. The outside is better in that it provides aerial views, but still, some of the external shots make the lot seem enormous.

r124 do you live in Ann Arbor? I had a similar experience there ...

by Anonymousreply 138October 14, 2021 3:09 PM

I actively despise this generation of 80 year olds. Will they fucking die already?

by Anonymousreply 139October 14, 2021 4:19 PM

The saddest thing in all this is the single pot of flowers on the front porch.

by Anonymousreply 140October 14, 2021 4:40 PM

The unpainted front porch railing (and just one) is weird.

by Anonymousreply 141October 14, 2021 4:43 PM

Did he pay cash? I highly doubt a lender would give that old geezer a mortgage.

[quote] realty listings use special camera lenses to make a closet look like the Taj Mahal,

Which is why no one should ever buy a house they haven’t seen in person. That’s just crazy (and not even that uncommon these days.)

The kid used too much teeth. Told that bitch to gum up.

by Anonymousreply 144October 14, 2021 11:21 PM

He found wire hangers.

by Anonymousreply 145October 15, 2021 12:01 AM

I want to know: Why was he moving at 84 and why was he buying a house site unseen? Why move to that location? Was this a good price for the area? Also, how soon after murdering the realtor did he kill himself? Did he have a history of violence? Who was he and what did he used to do for a living? Why did he think he could return a house after the sale, or was it still only pending/under contract?

[quote]I am getting tired of realtors sending me letters stating they want to sell my house for me. Often times, these letters are written on colored notepad paper and the realtor uses misspelled words and bad grammar. If I want to sell my house, I'll look for a realtor when I'm ready, and I will certainly not use any of these people.

This is by design. Those are form letters made to look like they were jotted and scrawled personally.... just for you. The misspellings are on purpose.

"My husband and I were walking in your neighborhood and just happened to see your house"

I would love to know where he was moving from, r146. Did his son know what was going on? He seems to have moved all by himself, which is odd for an 84-year-old.

by Anonymousreply 148October 15, 2021 9:11 AM

Exactly R146. No on GAF about the realtor's community activities (zzzzzz). The focus of the story should be WTF an old guy was doing buying that house to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 149October 15, 2021 9:12 AM

The realtor has roots in the community, so we have to hear how he was a pillar of the community even if he was selling termite ridden hovels. The old guy lived near Mobile, so I guess he liked water, in a bigger but equally ugly house on a slab (not a good idea in a flood plain), he had an expired cosmetology license and apparently owned a hair restoration business. I'm guessing that he had an assortment of really ugly toupees.

by Anonymousreply 150October 15, 2021 11:44 AM

I"m sure this was premeditated all along. That's why gays should never leave this planet without taking a few republicans out first.

by Anonymousreply 151October 24, 2021 2:33 AM

Reading the description of the property the realtor swindled the old man.

$160,000 for this.

Built in 1942

2 Bedrooms

1 Full Bathrooms

750 Square Feet

1.82 Acres

$40,000 would have been a more realistic price, and then only because it's almost a two acre lot.

by Anonymousreply 152October 24, 2021 3:58 AM

The old man wasn’t homicidal but the realtor came in, spoke, and purses fell out of his mouth.

by Anonymousreply 153October 24, 2021 4:21 AM

The old man planned this in Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 154October 24, 2021 4:24 AM

he seemed like a bootlicker based on those cringey flags all over his IG

no love lost

by Anonymousreply 155October 24, 2021 4:33 AM

R92 Mine was great too. He stopped by after the closing with a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries as a thank you gift. I reciprocated and thanked him by giving him the honor of being the first person I fucked in the new hot tub. Champagne, a hot tub, and a hot tight ass, it was a good first day in the new house.
