It seems like these movies destroyed him both personally and professionally.
Why Did ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Ruin Johnny Depp?

They made him millions. He was a terrible, weird person before them and terrible after.

Johnny Depp ruined Johnny Depp.

These movies made Johnny Depp a fortune and added to his net worth. So how did they ruin him? They kept him famous throughout the 2000s and probably gave him more opportunities. He was mostly known for doing edgy character roles prior and wasn't exactly a traditional Hollywood leading man. He ruined his own career by being unprofessional and addict.

I thought Amber Heard ruined Johnny Depp. At least according to the "Amber Head ruined Johnny Depp" troll.

[QUOTE] So how did they ruin him?
His downfall clearly started with these films, R3. He probably wishes he never stepped in Jack Sparrow’s boots.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 12, 2021 8:53 PM |
His breakup with Vanessa Paradis ruined him. She kept him in some kind of order.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 12, 2021 8:57 PM |
He looks like the buttchild of Pete Burns and Adam Ant.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 12, 2021 8:59 PM |
The money allowed him to be more hedonistic, leading to his worsening addictions and downfall.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 12, 2021 10:07 PM |
They didn't ruin Johnny Depp. He had some duds before then: Willy Wonka (2005) was terrible and so was The Lone Ranger (2013). In general people liked the Jack Sparrow character but it lost its luster when they released the 4th (on Stranger Tides) -- after Johnny's star was waning-- and then Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) which was riddled with stories of him having to be fed his lines via mike, because he was such a wreck, made the public non-sympathetic to this odd millionaire who had a private island and who seemingly deserted his loving family, who kept him in check -- for a blonde floozy.
Johnny also: believed his own hype, did too many drugs, too much alcohol, and thought he could be like Hunter S. Thompson. Much like Hunter he has crashed and burned. HST couldn't escape the Gonzo persona and JD can't escape Johnny / Jack the scalawag pirate persona.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 12, 2021 10:16 PM |
He also ruined Tim Burton's career.

r9 The Willy Wonka remake was after he started Pirates of the Caribbean series and had filmed several of the movies.

Johnny Depp wasn't a big leading man or A-list star in the 90s like Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis or Brad Pitt were but he had a lot of respect from movie critics and directors. He was a cult favorite for years. Since Pirates of Caribbean was a blockbuster hit, Depp could have used that to get even more meatier roles. That movie proved him to be a bankable name. Instead, he chose to keep doing the same type of roles where he plays dress up and acts like a ham. Clearly he had no issue being typecast because he was getting paid in the millions for each role. Like many in Hollywood, once he got that movie star status, he stopped trying to prove himself as an actor and got lazy.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 13, 2021 3:08 AM |
The problem with Johnny is that his salary increased after Pirates and he never compromised his pay.
A lot of these Marvel actors who make 10-20 million a movie will take a pay cut outside their Marvel movie to star in something with a good script or an indie movie to balance the work. That’s beneath Johnny. Give him $20 million or no deal.
So only Tim Burton and shitty big budget movies like “The Lone Ranger” and “Transcendence” could afford him, which is how he ended up becoming box office poison.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 13, 2021 3:25 AM |
I thought he still did smaller budget films, R13?

OP is linking to clickbait.

Pirates of the Caribbean both made Johnny Depp, and undid him. Before Pirates, he was a moderately successful actor -- only 1 of his films had crossed $100 million at the US box office, Sleepy Hollow (1999) at $101 million. But Pirates of the Caribbean made $305 million in the US alone, and an additional $349 million worldwide, making him a superstar. He could've used it as an opportunity to rein in his darker character traits, but he focused on the money and his bad habits went wild.
It's a tale as old as time.

It isn’t like he was a starving artist with no money for drugs before these films, OP. He would have been using if he gotten that role, or if he lost all his money and started working at Hardees. It it what addicts do.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 13, 2021 10:52 PM |
If you ever want to see his absolute BEST performance-one that he should have really gotten an Oscar for- go watch "The Libertine."
He's fucking incredible in it.
Sadly no one watched this film when it came out and it is now little more than a footnote in his filmography. It's based on the play of the same name that was well received in the UK and brought over to the US by Steppenwolf.
It also has great performances from Rosamund Pike, Samantha Morton, Jack Davenport, Tom Hollander, Rupert Friend and John Malkovich.
And enough penis references to keep everyone happy. Also, there's a scene with a midget riding around on a giant, papier mache dick. So there's that....

Johnny in Belgrade last night. He’s reduced to doing a voice for a Serbian animated film.

But he kinda was though, R20. That’s how he comported himself as an actor and a person. His role selection was much difference.

R12 that's how I remember it, too. Throughout the '90s, Johnny did mainly independent films and became somewhat of an indie darling. I remember being put off by his snobbery and pretensions. He would make a big deal about eschewing big budget blockbuster films and would state repeatedly that he was only interested in undertaking smaller, interesting projects and playing non-traditional characters. Then he did POTC, which became a huge hit (#4 of 2003) and earned him his first Oscar nomination. After that, he seemed to change his tune. After he got his first taste of worldwide superstardom and the big bucks, he appeared to be thirsty for more. He was a totally a different person in the 2000s. It was shocking (at least for me) to witness at the time, because he used to put down movie stardom and those who chased it. but now he was doing just that.

I wonder how the relationship with Vanessa Paradis factored into everything.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 20, 2021 10:17 PM |
Now I'm wondering if it may have been some midlife crisis type of thing. He turned 40 the same month that POTC premiered. He had had moderate success up until then.

Middle age ruined Depp. Paradis kept him grounded but he needed fresh puss to feel young. Unfortunately he picked a BPD lesbian who shits in beds to fill his void.

I think Depp is significantly Melungeon. Many southerners with "native" ancestry actually are part black. Has he ever done a DNA test?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 23, 2021 6:05 PM |
I think he had problems built in within himself right from the start. When he got his break in 21 Jump Street even then colleagues complained about him for being hard to work with.

R32 has there ever been a B+ actor or higher that wasn't 'difficult'?

Young Depp was pretentious. I'm sure that got on everybody's nerves.

Johnny is a descendent of Elizabeth Key Grinstead, the first Black woman in America to sue for her freedom and he's also a distant cousin to the R&B family girl group 702.
Johnny's father (pictured below) does look like he could have some African ancestors. And of course during slavery, later Reconstruction and Jim Crow, nobody in their right mind would be claiming their black blood. The Cherokee princess grandma myth was just a protective measure and many families passed it down that people really started to believe it. It helps that by the early 1800s, Natives were completely kicked out of the Eastern U.S., so nobody in backwoods North Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky or Georgia would know what a real Cherokee looked like anyway. So a biracial or light-skinned mixed race person could get away with saying they were Cherokee.

Old Depp is just as pretentious.

Like Madonna, he's just ashamed of his humble roots and wanted to create a more sophisticated persona. The thing is usually people from podunks will do this in their young years but eventually grow to appreciate aspects of their youth and reach a state of contentment with overcoming their obstacles. Celebrities seem to get stuck at the year they become hugely famous, Johnny Depp never grew out of his early 20s, so is still obsessed with his image and proving his worth despite all of the success and opportunities he has gotten.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 23, 2021 11:26 PM |
I remember at the time reading articles about him being a total pain in the ass during '21 Jump Street' and that the only person who he would even talk to was Peter DeLuise, who had to talk him into turning up to set. He was pretty much impossible to work with and incredibly lucky to keep that job. Later on he ghosted DeLuise and it all came out in the media again how shittily JD treated everyone he worked with.
He's his own worst enemy.

Johnny's boyish looks are really what protected him. It's easy to forgive a young white pretty boy. He always had mental issues, he said he use to cut himself and attempted to suicide as a teen before getting into music and acting. His parents divorced and he moved around a lot with an angry single mom. He never could escape his white trash roots. The addictions, passivity and sense of entitlement that comes from that. Johnny is seriously a damaged person who is lucky to still be alive though he is too immature to see all the blessings he has gotten. Definitely has a personality disorder and needs to get therapy.

People grew tired of his pretensions and affected mannerisms. His partnership with Tim Burton, whose movies have become repulsive and off putting, did not help either.
