My peoples are responsible for creating one of the bizarrest and nastiest versions of deep fried foods in America and for that I am truly sorry. But the fasnacht does practically make up for it so all should be forgiven.

R11, I was just about to mention fried ice cream! One of my first jobs was a cook at Chi Chi's. It was rolled in a combination of crushed corn flakes and cinnamon sugar.

Navajo fry bread. I actually thought I had invented it on my own back in the days that I had no pot to piss in and I LOVED it. Years later I found it's been a thing in the Southwest for ages. It's delicious and I mean it's literal water, salt and flour (though I like to add some parmesan when I can) making it the cheapest delicious food in existence. Yay for Fry bread!

American has NOTHING on Scotland, my dear DLers. As R16 has already added on of the most frightful delicacies that good ol' Alba has to offer, let me contribute something uniquely nightmarish that only the Scottish could eat, alongside haggis: deep fried battered pizza!

Variation on a deep fried pickle:

Don't remember where I saw this, but it was delish.

You get some pickle spears, lay them out and pat dry. Get a block of something like pepper jack cheese, and do a nice thick slice of cheese, the length of the spear. Lay one slice of cheese and one spear on an egg roll wrap and roll it up, then deep fry. We've done this combo (pickle & spicy cheese) with a nice creamy dip. Or you can do a non-spicy cheese with a chipotle mayo dip.

I'm not a fan of ranch, R12. You're not missing anything.

I've seen fried squid at Italian restaurants (calimari).

Fried squid is common everywhere, as are fries or chips.

In a fritto misto, I've enjoyed very thinly sliced, battered, and fried lemon. It's unbelievably delicious.

On 9/11, I was in Phoenix. I decided to drive home to DC. I swear on the way back, every restaurant only served fried food….even the salads! I started to stop at supermarkets to get fruit that I could eat in the car or in my hotel room.

I was at a party yesterday where they were air-frying chicken wings. The whole house smelled like MacDonald’s.

Sonic used to sell fried dill pickles..."Pickle-Os" was how they were listed on the menu. I wish they would bring them back.

My favorites: As mentioned above, deep fried ice cream in Mexican restaurants. Others include deep fried corn on the cob, hush puppies, onion rings in which you replace every other ring with strips of mozzarella and then use marinara as a dip. Beignets in New Orleans, of course, battered cauliflower, boneless skinless chicken breasts, cubed steak with pepper gravy, tempura, green tomatoes, fish and shrimp, mushrooms, green bean fries. I've heard about deep fried butter, candy bars, Twinkies but those sound too disgusting to even think about trying.

I used to work in a fast-food place that served foot-long hot dogs (not battered--just plain hot dogs) and we didn't have a device on which to heat or cook them, so we'd put them in the same deep-fat fryer we used for fries. They actually tasted really good, and the skin was wrinkly and crisp.

Do restaurants still serve deep fried mozzarella? I don't eat out because the only restaurant I liked closed a couple of years ago. Yeah, deep fried mozz with ranch and blue cheese dressing on the side. Applebee's or someplace like that. I'll go online and check this, but people here know everything. Except me.
