You can’t deny that SB is beautiful. Cute downtown. Great neighborhoods- beaches etc. Sadly I have found it to be incredibly homophobic and closeted. It seems like the only people that are out of the closet are sassy latinos. Is it because it’s Republican, full of homophobic surfers, or the bro culture at UCSB? if you see a white guy on the apps he’s a queen.
Let’s talk about Santa Barbara.

On what planet is Santa Barbara Republican? Most of the precincts were in the 70% range for Biden, some even over 80% Even Hope Ranch was 59% Biden.

It's because it's incredibly expensive to live there.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 28, 2021 2:43 AM |
I grew up there - I always thought it was beautiful and perfect. No idea why my dad decided to move when I was 11 to small town Arizona. A major bad decision.

I live there now. It's gorgeous and perfect and I'll probably never leave. Not overrun with Republicans but we have more than I'd like because of the financial demographic.
Not a great night life for young Gays. Now that I'm old, I don't care. The restaurants are good.

I only visited there for a little over a week for work but I knew right away I could retire there and be happy. I saw enough of the city to know how lovely it is.
How are the heat, fires, and earthquakes these days? I'd love to live in town near State Street and be able to walk to things.

I was only there once, and just "downtown" for an hour or so. Didn't realize it was so student oriented. But a cute downtown.

We used to go to the Arlington Theater to watch movies as a kid (I saw Star Wars there). It was so awesome. Spanish tile and fountains and then the theater itself had a little village scene on either side of the screen and twinkly lights like stars above. And then the courthouse is so spectacular - I use to explore it as a kid for hours. So beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 28, 2021 5:10 PM |
It might be beautiful but there’s no gay community. Go on grindr and scruff and you’ll see no pictures except for an occasional latino showing his ass. Pride festival is all Asians and Latinos. Gay white men are stuffed away in the closet.

I don't see how the place can be considered that homophobic. Even back in 2008, when Prop H8 happened, Santa Barbara County (with its main population being in the cities of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria) is the only county in Southern California where the majority voted "No."

by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 28, 2021 8:07 PM |
It's not homophobic, there's just no gay nightlife. It's great for older gays who are already settled down and want to walk their dogs and go out to dinner with other older people. If you want to dance, this is not the place.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 30, 2021 9:47 PM |
I've been there 3 times, on my way to other destinations. All 3 times I found it to be very quiet, staid, sedate and frankly rather dull. Not much to see or do. Maybe I missed something about it. Not that there's anything wrong with quiet and sedate. But similar beach areas such as La Jolla and Laguna Beach seemed to have so much more life to them. I'm sure Santa Barbara is a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit.
As far as no gay life, I can only say that a friend of mine graduated from UCSB about 25 years ago, and has told me it was a hotbed of easily available gay sex, back then at least.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 30, 2021 10:33 PM |
It's beautiful, scenic, incredibly expensive and deadly dull. Also, these days it's prone to wildfires and mudslides, at least in the surrounding areas.
It's a great weekend trip with a friend or lover, as long as no one is looking for a wild and crazy club scene. If you're a student at UCSB, maybe you'll enjoy the nightlife to be found, but as a young gay? Probably not.
Daytrippers or weekenders can enjoy strolling the quaint downtown, visiting the missions or touring the nearby wineries. Santa Ynez is cute and 30-40 minutes north of town, and the hills and mountains are gorgeous to drive through.
Living there means you'd have to be well-off and disinterested in much other culture. As an eldergay, I don't think I'd be happy to be there full-time, although, of course, it would be far better than most other flyover hellholes.

ex-partner's parents lived there and we visited them about 3 times, stayed in their granny unit. That was unusual because they were Mormon and we were not and unmarried. I didn't think it was all that special, although we did do a hike where we were able to see a whole bunch of monarch butterflies clustered on trees. i guess that's their mating place or a stopover on their flight. That was about the best of the whole thing.
I did hear that apparently it's a draw for artists because the light hits in a certain way that makes it very desirable to paint/draw landscapes. That's all i've got.
Solvang is not that close but it was much more interesting in my opinion. Definitely touristy, but had the wine tasting draw to it and the historical aspect to it.

Santa Barbara is gorgeous and it definitely has a casual, CA elegance to it. I think I would be board out of my mind though. There are no gay bars in SB - the closest one is in Oxnard. Gay nightlife is not essential, but it is nice to have at least one place. I think it would be great for couples, great for families, or for the relaxed outdoorsy guy who loves hiking and the beach. There is not much bad to say about it. I think everyone thinks it's beautiful. It's just weather it suits the lifestyle you want.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 2, 2021 2:57 AM |
I'm retired and have considered moving there, but it's too far away from a major city and decent airport. And the health care situation is probably not up to big-city standards either. And don't they constantly have water problems?

The healthcare system is just fine and you're not that far from LA, MARY!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 2, 2021 2:52 PM |
Plus it's usually on fire.
There are no gay bars because gay life consists of wealthy gay couples getting together for "game night" (Scattergories, Cranium, Telestrations, the Baby Boomer edition of Trivial Pursuit, and if feeling wild, Cards against Humanity). Tasteful buffet of snacks like baked artichoke dip, etc. Then back home and in bed by 9 to listen to Judy at Carnegie Hall again.

You might like Pea Soup Andersen's, on Highway 101 in Buellton, not too far from Solvang. It's been there since 1924. They have a full menu, but their claim to fame is the split pea soup, which is tasty - I think it has some bacon in it. If you order a bowl of it, they will refill it as many times as you want.

Santa Barbara is an unusually beautiful place - most of it due to city planning.
It's no wonder so many famous people live next door in Montecito - where there literally is nothing to do.
But I don't think I could live there full time. It has a lot of charm for a weekend, but full-time may be a bit trying.
Lovely homes and architecture. At a price.

Let's talk about Saint Barbra!
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 7, 2021 3:43 AM |
It's as close as you can get to the French Riviera in the US. Although the demographic trends white, old, and affluent... it has a large, historic, latino community, lots of students (UCSB), and is more affordable than you'd guess.
I'm always interested in posters who list "boring, nothing to do...", and I guess it's nightlife, etc. I mean there are a lot of drugs in Santa Barbara, always have been. And the beach - boats, boards, waves, islands with great camping/hiking. And an infinite number of great hiking all around the mountains... all the way back to Ojai, or Mt Figueroa. Horseback riding. And it's sort of a University town.. lots of events there. The local art museum isn't much. The local community college used to have a huge adult ed program... at one point SB had the highest % or residents involved in lifelong learning (personal growth groups, pottery, yoga, writing, art history etc etc) of anyplace outside of Denmark. I think that's not so much true as it used to be - funding, and.. the internet.
Did I say there are a lot of drugs there? I did?
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 7, 2021 3:52 AM |
I don't know if it's still there, but the Museum of Art in SB used to have this huge "sculpture" in the front that was like two metal poles with a large metal block between them. It was so ugly! As a kid, that was probably my first introduction to "modern art".

No need to stop at their restaurant.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | October 7, 2021 1:17 PM |
R76 - Andersen's is still there. I ate there last year and bought some soup earlier this year. However, it is definitely on its last legs. I could see how it was THE place to go years ago, but it feels like a relic now.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 8, 2021 1:09 AM |
Sorry for the incoherence, my phone tends to do that to posts. I meant to say that Anderson's sells canned pea soup that's sold all over California at least, it's good for canned soup and comes with or without the "bacon".
I remember stopping at the restaurant in years past and being completely underwhelmed by the food other than the soup, I'll get a much better meal at In-N-Out Burger. Or in Solvang, tourist trap that it is.

I recommended Andersen's because the other poster said thay like "blatant tourist traps," which Andersen's is, although the pea soup is good enough to stop for a quick bowl of it. Also they had an interesting candy shop with unusual candies and bakery goods, plus souvenirs, at least the last time I was there (2014). And on reading their web site, the pea soup is actually vegetarian, although you can get bacon bits sprinkled on top if you want. And it's all you want on the soup. Otherwise it's a run-of-the-mill roadside diner.

by Anonymous | reply 90 | October 13, 2021 11:24 PM |
There is one minor problem with Santa Barbara, Malibu, and really all the beaches from Point Conception until just before Santa Monica, except Ventura/Oxnard. It is that the beaches face south, so you can't sit on the beach and watch the sunset over the ocean. From Santa Monica southward, the beaches face west, so you can enjoy the glorious sight of the sunset directly over the ocean (and the green flash if you are lucky).

Anderson’s is closed for good, which will disappoint those of you who last went in 1985. I recommend Los Alamos, if you’re going up that way. My father drove us up to SB for mini getaways when I was growing up, we’d stay at the Four Seasons, which was the then new name for the Biltmore. I liked it because they had croquet, and therefore something to do when my parents were tired. Thank you, OP, for acknowledging that many surfers are homophobes. They’re all about PUSSAY, and you’d better be on board with that, so you don’t try and fuck them.
