Sissy Spacek is Verna: USO Girl

Originally aired on [italic]PBS Great Performances.[/italic]

Based on a story by Paul Gallico. A USO entertainer of very modest talent travels across WW Two Europe to entertain the troops. With a very young William Hurt as an Army officer who falls in love with her. Supporting cast includes Sally Kellerman and Howard da Silva. I have always wanted to see this but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Thanks to the person who uploaded it to YouTube. The ending make me laugh, but I’m twisted like that. I forgot about how good public television was back in the day…

“Who’s Happy Now!” by Oliver Hailey was on [italic]Great Performances[/italic] when I was but a gayling. It made a big impression on me. John Ritter and Rue McClanahan were the stars.

I loved this series of dramatizing short stories.

Why didn’t Sally Kellerman become a bigger star?

Let's get personal.

Your father Werner was a burger server in suburban Santa Barbara when he spurned your mother Verna for a curly-haired surfer named Roberta.

Did that hurt her?

Paul Gallico was quite the prolific one. He wrote a ton of novels and short stories.
