Self-Destructive People
Why are some people so self-destructive?
I graduated law school with a very attractive man who grew up in a wealthy family, married young, and was a rising legal star in NYC. I ran into him right after he turned 35. It turns out he got divorced, disbarred, got into a heroin, and was working as an escort. He was with a very questionable guy who had a tattoo of The Sigil of Baphomet.
I'm not smart enough to make this up.
What are your self-destructive stories?

Everyone is upvoting, but no one is commenting. Yikes.

Maybe self-destructive people aren't that common, OP, or maybe they chuck so many relationships that few people stick around for the extended collapse. I don't know any, or haven't kept in touch with any.
Self-destruction has gone right out of fashion, this isn't the 1970s.

They lack genuine self-esteem or have a great deal of guilt about something?

I don't think a tattoo of the Sigil of Baphomet is as shocking as you do, OP. He was just being badass... unless you are superstitious enough to believe that he was [italic]really[/italic] courting with demonic powers.

Internalized self hate, mental problems, guilt...

IMHO a lot of self-destructive behavior among the rich and famous happens because they can get away with shit a normal person can't. If a normal person gets caught with drugs or underage hookers they go to jail, celebrities have fixers who hush it up, and who probably provide safer sources of drugs and underage hookers. If you or I show up to work hammered and throw screaming fits we get fired, if a TV, movie, or music star does the same, the offended party is threatened or bribed into silence, and nothing happens to a screaming drunk except that maybe somebody else gets the next great offer coming up.
It's very hard to stop behaving badly, once the idea that you can get away with is fixed in your head, and your brain has been addled.

My mother’s brother-in-law was a very bad alcoholic. He was married to my mother’s sister, a lovely woman. They had 3 children, 2 girls and a boy. Their home life wasn’t good because of my uncle. My aunt had to sometimes leave meals outside of his door because he was drunk for days. He choked to death on a sandwich when home alone at 53. His son and one daughter also became alcoholics. The son (my cousin) was one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. My family never knew he was an alcoholic. He ended up being fired from his job as a funeral director and broke into the place for some reason. He took a bunch of pills and accidentally overdosed. His wife had tried to help him for years. He was 47. His sister has struggled for years with alcoholism. At one point she was outside naked and my mother was called to help her. I could go on. My point is that addiction is brutal. It has destroyed these 3 people’s lives.

Do you mean the LaVey sigil, OP, which was merely Hefner-Plus libertine camp in intention?
Because certainly you did not mean the one we don't talk about on anonymous websites because we know the Order's rules are sacrosanct, and consequences would be unpleasantly swift?
RIght?

My dad is the self-destructive type…or at least he was at a time it mattered most.
He had a full scholarship to an elite private college, but dropped out after a semester and went to Vietnam. He came back home, became a druggie, managed to clean himself up, but always worked at jobs where his intellect remained wasted.
The fact of the matter is, my dad and most other self-destructive people, battle demons (figuratively) every waking hour. We might think they have it all and are casually squandering opportunities others would kill for, but their behavior is often the product of past traumas.

OP, I also went to law school with a guy just like that. Smart, handsome but he burned out really quickly

Everyone has a death wish OP. It's human instinct. Yours is already apparent to the people around you.

I saw one of my ex-boyfriends and he had black blob tattooed under one of his eyes. He told me it was a heart. Then he told me that he let one of his dirtbag "artistic" friends tattoo him even though she had zero professional experience. A few weeks later he texted me and offered to have sex for money. Jeffrey C from Portland, you made quite an impression.
