Why do celebrities want to lecture people about politics on awards shows?

I just don't understand it. they know most people don't want to hear it, they're told this explicitly by the awards show producers; and yet for some reason they can't help telling us we need to free Tibet (Richard Gere) or stop drinking milk (Joaquin Phoenix), or celebrate women (everyone).

Do their words move anyone to commit any significant action? Almost certainly not. And they know it wont. Yet they cannot help themselves.

Is it just self-importance, or what? I don't go around my office lecturing people on political causes near and dear to my heart.

Well, celebrities have a public platform and you don't.
