Gosh, this is truly awful. We ought to acknowledge the fact that the crisis in Haiti has been completely managed by the US and its allies (from the Duvaliers to the assassination of Jovenel Moïse) as is the case with Honduras and Guatemala - incidentally, desperate citizens from those countries are desperately trying to find refuge in the US, who ought to welcome them as payment for its CIA-led criminal activities all over the American continent AND beyond.
The fact that these victims of American imperialism are being treated like little more than cattle, is beyond concerning. And we ought to remember that this is happening under Biden - you know, the man co-responsible for the ICE internment camps alongside Obama, who has continued using them and tried to prevent the media from showing the appalling conditions in which immigrants are held, after blaming the equally nefarious Donald Trump for everything.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 20, 2021 7:21 PM |

R14 SWEETIE that's because the rest of the world at the time rallies around the French. Haiti had to pay the French to prevent another war and most likely losing and bring enslaved again. The reporting I have heard is that while most of these people are Haitians they are not coming from Haiti due to the recent problems there. They are Haitians who have been living in other Latin American countries for several years. They had been told that this would be a good time to come to the US and they picked up where they were living hoping to get into the US.
They weren't fleeing Haiti, they saw an economic opportunity to come to the US. Unfortunately we just can't open the doors to anyone, anywhere who wants to come here.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 21, 2021 1:50 AM |
The thing you have to remember with many people from other countries is that they only know of the US from what they see on tv shows and movies. They have a total fantasy version of what the US and Americans are. It's really not their fault that they think America is a promised land where the streets are paved with gold and all of that shit. Imagine how you would perceive the US to be if all you knew about it was from Hollywood.

The photographer behind images depicting Border Patrol agents on horseback told KTSM things are not exactly what they seem when it comes to the photos.
The photographs, which were taken Sunday, appear to show agents on horses with a whip in hand. The photos caused outrage because from certain angles, it appears to show Border Patrol whipping migrants, but photographer Paul Ratje said he and his colleagues never saw agents whipping anyone.
“Some of the Haitian men started running, trying to go around the horses,” Ratje said.
Ratje is a photographer based in Las Cruces and has been in Del Rio since Friday. He said took the photographs from the Mexican side.
“I’ve never seen them whip anyone,” Ratje said. “He was swinging it, but it can be misconstrued when you’re looking at the picture.”

This is what authorities under an authoritarian Trump regime will do: round up immigrants, minorities, and political enemies — with guns, whips, and whatever means necessary — and force them into concentration camps, prisons and ovens, in an effort to reconfigure America into the Fourth Reich that he and his followers long to establish here.
They must be stopped at all cost, and that may ultimately require meeting force with even greater force.

R106, That's a hypocritical and supremely disingenuous shriek if ever I've heard one. Calling President Biden and VP Harris inept is like blaming a doctor for the death of a COVID patient who refused to get vaccinated in the first place.
The Trump-Pence regime did not exist in a bubble. Their mind-boggling ineptitude — denying then abysmally handling the pandemic, including the shameless peddling of quackworthy treatments that have led to the deaths of ~700,000 Americans; obscene deficit spending that led to an increase in the national debt of almost $8 trillion; unsustainable tax cuts for corporations and the uber-wealthy; pushing asinine conspiracy theories and Trump's Big Lie solely to foment rage and distrust among his easily-persuadable base; subservience to, and illicit if not illegal collaboration with, Russia; reckless handling of the unstable situations in Syria, Iran, and Afghanistan, including the official pledge to pull out all US troops in the latter by May 2021; playing footsies with despotic leaders; alienating European allies; ignoring the bounties that Russia placed on the heads of US troops; commiting impeachable offenses related to the abuse and ultimate corruption of executive power; enabling white supremacy; inciting violence on the Capitol; undermining the election and postal systems, not to mention the Constitution itself; appointing woefully unqualified family, friends, and cronies to political positions; using his position to financially benefit himself and his spawn; trying to execute a coup against a legitimately elected government; etc (this really could go on for a while) — is what caused this colossal mound of Trumpish shit in the first place that the current administration is trying to clean up.
But given that the Republican Party largely has become a party of sycophants, driven by the insane musings of a fascistically-minded lunatic, intent on putting their Orange Jesus back in the White House, there is no chance in hell that the Biden administration can hope for help from that side of the aisle to repair the massive damage to the stability, reputation, and sustainability of this country.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas finally admitted on Sunday that 12,000 Haitian migrants have been released into the U.S.
He said the number could go up as 5,000 other cases are still being processed
This means the Haitian migrant count is up from 15,000 to 17,000
It comes as even more Haitian migrants make their way to the U.S., with images emerging Saturday of a caravan traveling to the Panama border from Acandi, Colombia.
Meanwhile
Beto wants more.

Immigration and Afghanistan are Biden's weak points. I don't think and certainly hope inflation will not be that big an issue, if the economy booms and people get jobs with increases in pay.

by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 26, 2021 9:34 PM |
His focus on social programs and the inequality in wealth and income that have grown in this country over several decades. This is huge and he may not get everything but will get enough to steer this country in the right direction. with tax credits for children and subsidies for childcare in the form of pre-school. Paid family leave and free or subsidized community college can also be a game changer , if people learn a trade or a skill that leads to decent employment. He's also not on Twitter 24/7 and has compassion for people. His mistakes with Afghanistan and immigration were due to impatience and not looking at all sides. He was warned to slow down. Most Americans wanted to be out of Afghanistan and they also want to grant legal status to dreamers. As far as TPS holders and other unauthorized immigrants , the majority of the country does not want to grant legal status. More importantly Americans want a secure border before considering granting legal status to others.

Rules for citizens, rules for air travelers, and rules for illegals.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Friday told reporters that the nearly 15,000 migrants who were camped out under the Del Rio bridge in squalid conditions last week were not tested for COVID-19, and he does not know if anyone got sick with the contagious virus while there.
"We did not test that population of individuals," Mayorkas said. "We do not know, I do not know, I should say if I may be perfectly accurate, I do not know if anyone was sick with COVID. We certainly had some people get sick, not with COVID to my knowledge and we addressed their illnesses."
Mayorkas said that up to 30,000 people were encountered in Del Rio since Sept. 9 and that as many as 15,000 were concentrated there at one time.

Believe “quietly corrects” signifies changing copy without informing readers.
Imagine how the media would have been in a frenzy over all of this during the last administration.
Here's the thing: this [italic]did[/italic] happen under the last administration. Both literally and, in this case, figuratively. I say literally because Trump spent 4 years demonizing immigrants — well, so long as they weren't white (remember the whole "why don't Scandinavians immigrate here?" bullshit — as he dumped $billions, transforming ICE, into what amounts to little more than a private army that has been infiltrated by rightwing authoritarian loons. I say figuratively because it's not like we had inauguration day and all of the Trump appointees and embeds all tendered their resignations. Biden is saddled with the border patrol Trump left him (just as the next president will be saddled with the border patrol Biden will leave them, but of course it will be a better run and equipped force). And even post-Trump, we have people like Steven Miller who have done their very best to make a bad situation worse.
These people are coming here in droves because of Biden’s messaging.
No, these people are coming here because they have no hope. Haiti is hell on Earth. That's no excuse, however; there are many hells on Earth. But to suggest that Biden sent a message that immigrants are welcome flies in the face of obvious facts, let alone common sense. Biden, like Obama, has been on a deportation kick that makes Trump look like a pussy. Recall the images of these immigrants being marched across the tarmac, loaded into giant military transports and flown back to Haiti.
Biden has been criticized heavily for his immigration stance (someone even linked an article covering Beto's objections) and frankly, nothing Biden does in this regard matters. The right knows immigration is a wedge issue that has been permanently cast such that no matter what a Democrat does, it's "wide open borders" and "a free-for-all" when nothing could be further from the truth; while anything a Republican does in this regard (like family separation, setting up detainment camps under deplorable conditions) is excused as just trying to observe our status as a sovereign nation.
I'm shocked at the responses here on this issue. I'm shocked at the number of W&Ws posts are getting that undermine everything the US is supposed to be about. We are a nation of immigrants, and while we can't just let everyone who wants to come in, we can at least have some empathy for them as human beings. To put it bluntly, it makes no difference if those leather straps were whips or reins because it feels the same when they strike human flesh.
We could stop illegal immigration cold if we did one thing: hold the people who give undocumented immigrants jobs accountable, and put some real force behind it. Immigrants come here because they think they will get work, and in large part, they do. I'd suggest to Biden that he transform ICE into a force that upheld our immigration laws, specifically singling out the chapters and verses that prohibit employing anyone who cannot provide citizenship documents. All it would take is once instance of a CEO being charged with a crime, tried, convicted, and sentenced to a stiff jail term, and all of a sudden jobs for immigrants would dry up and you'd see reverse immigration unlike we've seen in modern times.
But that won't happen because we all like our houses cleaned, our cars washed and parked for tips, cheap nannies, and cheap food, whether it's meat that is packed or vegetables that are picked for slave wages. The American economy is dependent on cheap immigrant labor. No one likes to admit it, but there it is. And Republicans love it because it provides them with the best of both worlds: cheap labor to exploit, and a wedge issue used to demonize Democrats.

It's not a "wedge" issue, but an economic one. Perhaps we're so dependent on cheap labor because other countries employ slave labor while facing no consequences. Why else do we need it? The products we import from China are more disposable, people are buying tons of shit they don't need, and ingesting tons of unhealthy food.
Additionally, these same policies that are meant to produce cheaper goods have devastating economic consequences for the labor market.
But to suggest that Biden sent a message that immigrants are welcome flies in the face of obvious facts, let alone common sense. Biden, like Obama, has been on a deportation kick that makes Trump look like a pussy.

The hard working and overwhelmed Patrol did not and the man who videoed the incident confirmed they weren't. The Catholic Church U S.A. may be facilitating the next big illegal alien hoard coming up from Mexico. New members for their local churches who lost many members because of the sexual predator priests ? Why don't we stem the tide now by dropping leaflets on the hoards as they enter Mexico ? Bilingual leaflets indicating the border defenders in the US have been given lethal force authority to stop anyone who tries to breach the border. Just like the defenders of our Capitol building in DC were given lethal force authority to use against actual U.S. citizens if needed. At the bottom of the flyer in extra large type should be printed "YOU GO HOME!".
