The photographer behind images depicting Border Patrol agents on horseback told KTSM things are not exactly what they seem when it comes to the photos.

The photographs, which were taken Sunday, appear to show agents on horses with a whip in hand. The photos caused outrage because from certain angles, it appears to show Border Patrol whipping migrants, but photographer Paul Ratje said he and his colleagues never saw agents whipping anyone.

“Some of the Haitian men started running, trying to go around the horses,” Ratje said.

Ratje is a photographer based in Las Cruces and has been in Del Rio since Friday. He said took the photographs from the Mexican side.

“I’ve never seen them whip anyone,” Ratje said. “He was swinging it, but it can be misconstrued when you’re looking at the picture.”

While you say “quietly corrects”, r191, you also note NYT did issue a specific correction in their “Corrections” squib to inform readers that they corrected text in a previous article.

Believe “quietly corrects” signifies changing copy without informing readers.

However, point taken. NYT went with a quick juicy story, inadequately fact checked, that helped spread an appalling untruth about border patrol employees. Then on the inside pages, days later, “oops, never mind.”

The fact that Biden and Harris condemned our entire society based on a fake story and keep doubling down against all evidence shows the depths of idiocy our society has sunk to. Nobody will remember what the NY Times prints but everyone will be emboldened by the president's lies.

I'm shocked at the responses here on this issue. I'm shocked at the number of W&Ws posts are getting that undermine everything the US is supposed to be about. We are a nation of immigrants, and while we can't just let everyone who wants to come in, we can at least have some empathy for them as human beings. To put it bluntly, it makes no difference if those leather straps were whips or reins because it feels the same when they strike human flesh.

We could stop illegal immigration cold if we did one thing: hold the people who give undocumented immigrants jobs accountable, and put some real force behind it. Immigrants come here because they think they will get work, and in large part, they do. I'd suggest to Biden that he transform ICE into a force that upheld our immigration laws, specifically singling out the chapters and verses that prohibit employing anyone who cannot provide citizenship documents. All it would take is once instance of a CEO being charged with a crime, tried, convicted, and sentenced to a stiff jail term, and all of a sudden jobs for immigrants would dry up and you'd see reverse immigration unlike we've seen in modern times.

But that won't happen because we all like our houses cleaned, our cars washed and parked for tips, cheap nannies, and cheap food, whether it's meat that is packed or vegetables that are picked for slave wages. The American economy is dependent on cheap immigrant labor. No one likes to admit it, but there it is. And Republicans love it because it provides them with the best of both worlds: cheap labor to exploit, and a wedge issue used to demonize Democrats.

It's not a "wedge" issue, but an economic one. Perhaps we're so dependent on cheap labor because other countries employ slave labor while facing no consequences. Why else do we need it? The products we import from China are more disposable, people are buying tons of shit they don't need, and ingesting tons of unhealthy food.

Additionally, these same policies that are meant to produce cheaper goods have devastating economic consequences for the labor market.

Maxine Waters with her James Brown hairdo is a lying son of a bitch. She was ranting about the Border Patrol horsemen whipping the poor down trodden illegal aliens trying to crash our border. The hard working and overwhelmed Patrol did not and the man who videoed the incident confirmed they weren't. The Catholic Church U S.A. may be facilitating the next big illegal alien hoard coming up from Mexico. New members for their local churches who lost many members because of the sexual predator priests ? Why don't we stem the tide now by dropping leaflets on the hoards as they enter Mexico ? Bilingual leaflets indicating the border defenders in the US have been given lethal force authority to stop anyone who tries to breach the border. Just like the defenders of our Capitol building in DC were given lethal force authority to use against actual U.S. citizens if needed.
