Official Emmys Thread II

Lots of big surprises tonight. was not expecting Colman or Menzies to win.

by Anonymousreply 231September 26, 2021 9:41 AM

Does anyone care about these award shows anymore? I use to be all up on my celebrity gossip and fashion a few years ago but wow the last couple they all seem so vapid & I’ve lost total interest

by Anonymousreply 1September 20, 2021 4:08 AM

You must, r1, if you're posting on this thread.

Not to be superficial, but damn, Jean Smart has a body-ody-ody.

Her speech made me cry.

I hope work, awards, and perhaps some young dick are comforting her in this difficult time.

by Anonymousreply 4September 20, 2021 4:14 AM

I'm thrilled Coleman won over that horrible nothing who played Diana. That actress was awful! People loved her because she played Diana.

by Anonymousreply 5September 20, 2021 4:35 AM

Olivia Colman really deserved her Emmy. She was really memorable as the Queen. She perfectly captured the middle-aged queen's comfort in her role, her strong sense of responsibility to the Commonwealth, and her confusion and frustration over her children's and her sister's unhappinesses.

by Anonymousreply 6September 20, 2021 4:42 AM

I need Josh O'Connor to be my husband.

That is all.

by Anonymousreply 7September 20, 2021 4:46 AM

I'm I the only one seeing Josh O'Connor queen out up on stage? I won't be surprised if one day he comes out.

by Anonymousreply 8September 20, 2021 4:49 AM

It was shitty of Ewan McGregor not to thank Halston in his acceptance speech. He wouldn't even have that Emmy if it weren't for Halston and he completely ignored him. Didn't Renee forget to thank Judy Garland after she won the Golden Globe?

by Anonymousreply 9September 20, 2021 4:52 AM

I thought he did, r9?

by Anonymousreply 10September 20, 2021 4:56 AM

Tobias Menzies finally winning and Jean Smart's win were the best of the night!

by Anonymousreply 11September 20, 2021 4:59 AM

The biggest surprise was that anyone watched.

by Anonymousreply 12September 20, 2021 5:06 AM

[quote] It was shitty of Ewan McGregor not to thank Halston in his acceptance speech.

Do you really imagine the dead for some reason linger on Earth in order to watch awards shows?

by Anonymousreply 13September 20, 2021 5:52 AM

Anyone want to guess how bad the ratings are going to be for this?

Anyways, Colman totally deserved the Emmy (although it looked like she was wearing a Starfleet uniform tonight!). Her performance as the Queen during season three wasn't as strong and I don't she really got a handle on Elizabeth until the last handful of episodes and then absolutely nailed the part in season four.

by Anonymousreply 14September 20, 2021 5:57 AM

They are starting the "Emmy so white" shit again. Funny thing is I agreed with the winners this year, there was nobody I was pissed that I felt like they didn't deserve it.

by Anonymousreply 15September 20, 2021 6:01 AM

The nominees were as diverse as can be. Exactly which undeserving white people cheated a deserving person of color out of an award?

I'm sorry, but Uzo Aduba, MJ Rodriguez and Jurnee Smollett were not better actresses in a drama than Oscar winner Olivia Colman.

Gillian Anderson was a lock for The Crown. Samira Wiley was nominated in that category but already had a win for that role.

Bridgerton is the usual Shonda Rimes pulp that never wins awards, and Lovecraft Country was poorly reviewed and canceled. Black Lady Sketch Show lost to SNL, but it's young, and SNL is a juggernaut that has a much larger reach.

So Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross got their gazillionth nominations but didn't win. Call up Julia Duffy, Steve Carell, Angela Lansbury or Amy Poehler and commiserate. I'm not sure how anyone could stack up their performances and say they were better than Sudeikis or Jean Smart.

by Anonymousreply 16September 20, 2021 6:23 AM

R8 Like Tobias Menzies, Josh O'Connor is not gay just British.

by Anonymousreply 17September 20, 2021 7:02 AM

Celebrities flaunting their masklessness

Seth Rogen: why are we in such a small room without masks and no ventilation during a pandemic

by Anonymousreply 18September 20, 2021 7:16 AM

Seth Rogen won me over with his comments about the tent but then lost me again when he said the wrong last name for the actress who won for Ted Lasso.

by Anonymousreply 19September 20, 2021 7:45 AM

I can't help it, I really like Seth Rogen. Met him back during Freaks & Geeks, when it filmed at my place of employment. All of them were pleasant & polite, but he was REALLY cool & friendly.

by Anonymousreply 20September 20, 2021 7:54 AM

Olivia Colman's interpretation of the Queen was nothing more than Olivia Colman putting on a stupid accent.

by Anonymousreply 21September 20, 2021 8:01 AM

Exactly r16. All the moaners who think black people should have won are never able to say which black actors they mean. They're basically saying black people should be given awards solely because they're black, not because they gave the best performance.

by Anonymousreply 24September 20, 2021 8:12 AM

How did that Gambit thing pull that off at the last moment?

by Anonymousreply 25September 20, 2021 8:19 AM

I have R22 on block. I wonder if it's the same person in the Ted Lasso thread who objects to black actors in Ted Lasso and Vigil?

by Anonymousreply 26September 20, 2021 8:20 AM

What channel is Apple + anyways?

by Anonymousreply 27September 20, 2021 8:22 AM

Great answer r24, except you can't say which black actors should win. Go on, say which black actor deserved to win last night but didn't.

I don't object to black actors in anything r26, I just think that if they are going to win acting awards it should be because they are the best actor in their category.

by Anonymousreply 28September 20, 2021 8:28 AM

Does anyone think Sterling K. Brown, Billy Porter, Jonathan Majors or Rege-Jean Page should have won Best Actor in a Drama over Josh O'Connor?

Brown and Porter already won Emmys for those roles on shows that are/were in terminal decline. This Is Us stopped being awards-show material years ago, and Hollywood (like DL) is done offering praise to Ryan Murphy.

Majors (Lovecraft Country) had no chance; the show was canceled months ago.

Everybody thinks Rege-Jean Page is hot, but best drama actor of the year? He might have had a shot if he hadn't quit Bridgerton after the first season, endangering the show (and Netflix's profits) and pissing everybody off.

by Anonymousreply 29September 20, 2021 8:30 AM

I will add that Jonathan Majors is very talented.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a very good film and you should all watch it.

But Best Actor in a Drama this year, no.

by Anonymousreply 30September 20, 2021 8:32 AM

the hashtags like #oscarsowhite or #emmysowhite are double edged sword, they brought the awareness to the issue but if they use it every time there is an absence of black winners, it could cast the doubt on future black winners, they win simply because they are black!

by Anonymousreply 31September 20, 2021 8:52 AM

R16 WTF are you talking about?

Lovecraft Country was highly reviewed.

88% on RT, 7.1 on IMDB, 90% on Google.

by Anonymousreply 32September 20, 2021 9:01 AM

I was robbed………..of any talent that I might have had about twenty years ago. Thank God I can still shock them with my gender confusion and cross dressing antics!!!

by Anonymousreply 33September 20, 2021 9:07 AM

Variety and the New York Times called it exploitative torture porn, R32. The Times' critic is a black woman. Those are the reviews I remember.

And it was canceled well before voting closed. The wind was not exactly at its back.

by Anonymousreply 34September 20, 2021 9:08 AM

[quote] the hashtags like #oscarsowhite or #emmysowhite are double edged sword, they brought the awareness to the issue but if they use it every time there is an absence of black winners, it could cast the doubt on future black winners, they win simply because they are black!

“Cast doubt”, my ass. Once you win, you win.

by Anonymousreply 35September 20, 2021 9:18 AM

[quote] Go on, say which black actor deserved to win last night but didn't.

Michaela Coel.

by Anonymousreply 36September 20, 2021 9:19 AM

No one took the trolls bait on the main thread so it made a new one to try and racebait

by Anonymousreply 37September 20, 2021 9:25 AM

Uh, Michaela Coel did win an Emmy, for writing a limited series. Over the people who wrote Queen's Gambit, Mare of Easttown and three episodes of WandaVision.

She was not going to win Best Actress/limited series against Kate Winslet, nor should she have.

(BTW, watch her earlier project Chewing Gum - it is wonderful.)

by Anonymousreply 38September 20, 2021 9:34 AM

Do you really think that Michaela Cole deserved to win the lead actress/limited series category over Kate Winslet, r36?

by Anonymousreply 39September 20, 2021 9:41 AM

The hashtag protests are less about who should have won and more about why there aren't opportunities for more to win.

Black-ish and This Is Us get nominated every year just so the Emmys aren't completely dominated by streaming and HBO but only serve to highlight the gap in quality between the two

by Anonymousreply 40September 20, 2021 9:49 AM

I am glad Michaela Coel won for writing, and it may be a record accomplishment.

I don't think any other show that's gotten three nominations for writing in the same year has lost, like WandaVision did. Usually that's a pretty good sign Emmy voters are in the tank for that show.

(Just trivia: I remember there was at least one year when one show got every nomination for writing in its category: SCTV. And I think Hill Street Blues either matched that or came close.)

by Anonymousreply 41September 20, 2021 9:52 AM

Did anyone else find it strange that women being treated like shit was the woke issue of the night? I thought for sure the whole night was going to be oppressed blacks/systemic racism.

by Anonymousreply 42September 20, 2021 10:41 AM

I’m sorry but I think Kate Winslet is kind of overrated.

by Anonymousreply 43September 20, 2021 10:41 AM

That may be the case, but does that mean Michaela Cole gave a better performance than her in the shows they were nominated for, r43?

by Anonymousreply 44September 20, 2021 10:47 AM

I had a friend who posted that Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez were robbed.

I'm like, are you drunk??

Pretty sure he was. He also said the Emmy diversity was performance. Well, yes, it probably is - why do you suppose that is?

by Anonymousreply 45September 20, 2021 10:48 AM

R40, at the risk of being called a right-wing troll, I'd suggest that part of the reason black actors have less opportunity to win awards is because they are even more typecast today in roles and shows that are invariably about the evils of racism in some way. If black people were cast in good roles where their being black in a racist world wasn't the most important aspect of their character then they would be able to express a greater range and play more interesting characters with a wider appeal. Sorry if anyone finds any of that offensive, but playing a character whose most important feature is that they are black can be limiting.

Viola Davis was brilliant as Annalise Keating, for which she won an Emmy. Keating is a complex, nuanced character who plumbs the depths of so many different emotions and Davis was able to show her wide range of acting skill. These are the kinds of roles that black actors should demand, as well as roles where skin colour doesn't matter at all.

by Anonymousreply 46September 20, 2021 10:58 AM

The Emmys tried to be diverse with its nominations.

Interestingly, when they showed the British group in London (I assume), EVERYONE in that room was white.

by Anonymousreply 47September 20, 2021 11:09 AM

I don't subscribe to Amazon+, Hulu, HBO, Discovery+, among others.

Thus, I enjoyed the Emmy show while having zero knowledge of the majority of nominated entries!

by Anonymousreply 48September 20, 2021 11:19 AM

Because they were the cast of The Crown, r47, not the cast of I May Destroy You.

by Anonymousreply 49September 20, 2021 11:24 AM

R49, Wait until Archie grows up! There will be a series about the rivalry between him and Louis! Diversity!

by Anonymousreply 50September 20, 2021 11:30 AM

[wuote] Do you really think that Michaela Cole deserved to win the lead actress/limited series category over Kate Winslet, [R36]?

Mare of Easttown was an airport novel.

Just saw and read that Michael K Williams was a huge favorite for best supporting actor and it was a huge upset that he didn't win.

I'm like, what show was he in? Oh. Lovecraft Country. I totally forgot he was in that. Was he in that a lot? I do not remember really. Not a sign that it was a great performance or that he was a huge favorite.

by Anonymousreply 54September 20, 2021 11:40 AM

He also valued his performance, profession and colleagues so much that he OD'd and died two weeks before the ceremony, R54.

[quote] [R16] WTF are you talking about? Lovecraft Country was highly reviewed. 88% on RT, 7.1 on IMDB, 90% on Google.

Pretty sure those are just based on the reviews for the first episode or two not the entire season— that’s how the RT/MC tv scores work. Lovecraft Country fell off the cliff around episode three. That show was a mess.

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2021 11:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 57September 20, 2021 11:51 AM

#EmmysSoBritish as much as #EmmysSoWhite.

(or in the case of Sudeikis, British-adjacent).

by Anonymousreply 58September 20, 2021 12:22 PM

The only talent required of actor in Bridgerton is to be able to memorize lines and repeat them with something approximating the tone of real conversation. It's not even melodrama. It's just spun sugar.

by Anonymousreply 59September 20, 2021 12:27 PM

[quote]Mare of Easttown was an airport novel.

Then you're comparing the series not the performance of the actresses, r51 and should be delighted that Michaela Cole won the Emmy for best writing.

I think it's hard to argue that Michaela Cole's acting performance was better than that of Kate Winslet.

by Anonymousreply 60September 20, 2021 12:27 PM

I head poor Glennie had a meltdown about Olivia Colman's win.

by Anonymousreply 61September 20, 2021 12:53 PM

This is starting to become like the Daytime Emmys from years ago. After every ceremony all the press or anyone else could talk about was how Susan Lucci didn't win again. It was disrespectful to the actors who won. It's getting annoying. Diversity isn't just giving black creatives awards, there are other minority groups who also get overlooked and who continue to get overlooked. And sometimes the nomination is the win. The recognition is half the battle.

by Anonymousreply 62September 20, 2021 1:03 PM

[quote] Black-ish and This Is Us get nominated every year just so the Emmys aren't completely dominated by streaming and HBO but only serve to highlight the gap in quality between the two

Both shows are decent, but overrated as fuck. On This is Us, Sterling K. Brown is the best actor on the show, but his character is so sanctimonious and insufferable. The rest of the cast is average at best especially Chris Sullivan.

Black-ish's last few seasons are just blah. If that Brown-ish spinoff by Eva Longoria ever gets made, it will probably suck.

by Anonymousreply 63September 20, 2021 1:07 PM

Josh O'Connor is "obsessed" with Dan Levy. He's the person Josh wanted to see at the Emmy's.

Michaela Cole is a woman? I just assumed he was playing a man in a dress.

by Anonymousreply 65September 20, 2021 3:03 PM

After watching TV nonstop during COVID, I'm going to actively try to reduce my watching significantly. All these shows come and go and are just ways to pass the time. We're all wasting so much time being passive observers.

by Anonymousreply 66September 20, 2021 3:11 PM

My very un-PC mom watches award shows with me. Her #1 comment of late is "Now, is that an actual woman, or...?" She said that numerous times last night.

by Anonymousreply 67September 20, 2021 3:12 PM

Why do people keep posting they remember Debbie Allen from 'The Cosby Show'?! Debbie's sister Phylicia Rashad played Cosby's wife on the series. I don't recall Debbie being a regular on the series.

Did Debbie direct a few episodes? Was she a guest star? Was that actually a mistake, when during the tribute, it was mentioned Debbie's association with The Cosby Show'?

From her TV appearances, Debbie is well known from her role on the 'Fame' TV series.

by Anonymousreply 68September 20, 2021 3:22 PM

[quote] My very un-PC mom watches award shows with me. Her #1 comment of late is "Now, is that an actual woman, or...?" She said that numerous times last night.

I hope you explained to her the truth about Olivia Colman.

by Anonymousreply 69September 20, 2021 3:23 PM

Debbie is guilty and complicit in things her sister did as well. They were the Black Mary Kate and Ashley.

by Anonymousreply 70September 20, 2021 3:25 PM

[quote]Debbie is guilty and complicit in things her sister did as well. They were the Black Mary Kate and Ashley.

??? Your response has nothing to do with my question why Debbie was associated with 'The Cosby Show'.

by Anonymousreply 71September 20, 2021 3:30 PM

I recently saw Debbie play a heroin addict on 'Good Times'.

by Anonymousreply 72September 20, 2021 3:30 PM

Do they want awards or do they want work? Because tremendous awareness has been raised on the issue and is translating into actual jobs for working actors. If they want a fix for prizes, what does that say about the work? As someone said upthread, I can't quibble with any of the winners this year - all jobs well done.

by Anonymousreply 73September 20, 2021 3:34 PM

[quote] ??? Your response has nothing to do with my question why Debbie was associated with 'The Cosby Show'.

Unclench, Blanche.

No one here is at your beck and call.

by Anonymousreply 74September 20, 2021 3:39 PM

I'll repeat this here:

7 out of 12 winners are British (and white). And that's not even counting Gillian Anderson who now lives in the UK.

Ridiculous. It's like BAFTA 2.0.

by Anonymousreply 75September 20, 2021 3:40 PM

Because almost 40 years later, old people confuse the two sisters R71

by Anonymousreply 76September 20, 2021 3:41 PM

[quote]7 out of 12 winners are British (and white).

Well, three of them were for "The Crown," which was pretty well regarded as the best show on TV this year with by far the best actors. And there were no black members of the BRF until Meghan, so that's hardly surprising.

by Anonymousreply 77September 20, 2021 3:42 PM

R77 Great, explain the other 4.

by Anonymousreply 78September 20, 2021 3:44 PM

Isn’t Michaela Cole British? If there was a British conspiracy for fixing the Emmys, wouldn’t she have won?

by Anonymousreply 79September 20, 2021 3:48 PM

She did win, R79, for writing "I May Destroy You."

by Anonymousreply 80September 20, 2021 3:50 PM

It's shocking that Kate won over Anya Taylor Joy in The Queen's Gambit. Anya gave the best TV performance of the past decade.

by Anonymousreply 81September 20, 2021 3:51 PM

I thought we were discussing acting Emmys?

by Anonymousreply 82September 20, 2021 3:51 PM

Will that director of "The Queen's Gambit" now automatically not be nominated for anything he directs because of his arrogant and interminable acceptance speech last night? He's the new Greer Garson as far as long speeches though I daresay back then they just let her go on and on, and she probably wasn't rude. But very likely had a sense of entitlement like this guy with other people's time. I saw he went up with what looked like single-spaced copy on two sheets on long paper going up there. Holy crap!

by Anonymousreply 83September 20, 2021 3:51 PM

Why was everyone reading?

by Anonymousreply 84September 20, 2021 3:53 PM

R75 you may have noticed entertainment, like everything else, has gone global. No one forced the hiring of actors from the UK or anywhere else on earth. Y

by Anonymousreply 85September 20, 2021 4:05 PM

Omg. None of the black actors or white actors were nominated simply for race. Everyone nominated was nominated for their work and nothing more.

The race obsession needs to stop.

Anyone with a brain knows The Crown is sweeping. Everyone knew Ted Lasso was the front runner. Not because the casts are white, but because they were very well written/directed/acted shows. The others were also but there is no coming close.

Black-ish hasn’t been great lately but I do feel it should have won years ago. I forgot which season, but it felt fresh and fun and was genuinely funny.

However

by Anonymousreply 86September 20, 2021 4:08 PM

It's amazing none of you seem to care that Josh O'Connor is obsessed with Dan Levy

by Anonymousreply 87September 20, 2021 4:09 PM

AGAIN, Gillian Anderson is not British simply because she lives there.

by Anonymousreply 88September 20, 2021 4:09 PM

R87 because who cares? His obsession is not sexual. It’s ok to be fascinated by someone and it NOT be sexual.

by Anonymousreply 89September 20, 2021 4:09 PM

Gillian looked beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 90September 20, 2021 4:11 PM

[quote] It's shocking that Kate won over Anya Taylor Joy in The Queen's Gambit. Anya gave the best TV performance of the past decade.

I think you're the only one who is shocked. Kate Winslet is one of the finest actors of her generation.

by Anonymousreply 91September 20, 2021 4:12 PM

Kate Winslet is the next Meryl, certainly in terms of longevity but possibly an equal in talent. And definitely in terms of eye rolling Glenn Close, who will not retire or die without a Best Actress Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 92September 20, 2021 4:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 97September 20, 2021 4:22 PM

Of course Kate should have won. She was BRILLIANT in Mare. Her speech was a bit much, but her talent is incredible. She deserved it.

From the last thread:

[quote]I don't understand why there hasn't been an outpouring of rage against the Emmys because almost all of the nominees are on pay cable and so many poor people don't have access to the shows.

Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, etc. are not "pay cable." Netflix tied CBS (in 1974) for the all time record of 44 Emmy wins.

Award shows haven't been fun since the 90s really.

by Anonymousreply 102September 20, 2021 4:43 PM

"CBS, as part of the traditional CBS/NBC/ABC/Fox rotation, had the privilege of broadcasting an Emmys telecast during which the Big Four broadcast networks collectively won just one award (best variety sketch series for NBC’s Saturday Night Live)"

That should be streaming's next target... a weekly streamer that is consistently funny.

by Anonymousreply 103September 20, 2021 4:48 PM

I agree with that at r101…the broadcast networks barely get any nominations, so why should they keep airing the Emmys? Once This is Us and black-ish and Allison Janney’s show are gone, what else on the broadcast networks would be nominated?

by Anonymousreply 104September 20, 2021 4:48 PM

Network TV shows are horrible.

Terrible writing & sophomoric plots catered to the mass, dragged on for 22 episodes a season to milk money from ads.

It's not that hard for streaming to do better.

I agree, R62, that it's disrespectful but no more so than when people of color win just to have racists scream they only got it due to "woke-ism" or "white guilt." There is plenty of disrespect to go around from both sides in these discussions, which is why I think everybody needs to stop and think before they post some of the nonsense they say with regard to these awards.

by Anonymousreply 109September 20, 2021 5:01 PM

Network is mostly cop show formula, badly done.

by Anonymousreply 110September 20, 2021 5:03 PM

Emmy Viewership Rises Double Digits Over 2020’s All-Time Low To Hit 7.4 Million

I loved the show. It was great seeing an in-person event. My only disappointments were the complete losses to the cast of THE HANDMAID'S TALE and HACKS beating out TED LASSO in writing (though, that was a justified win).

[quote]I think it's hard to argue that Michaela Cole's acting performance was better than that of Kate Winslet.

Coel’s performance was more lived in and less gimmicky.

Winslet’s performances always lack humility. She’s afraid to appear morally flawed or shamed when the moment calls for it. When her boss reamed her out for her lies and corruption her main note was “I can’t believe that YOU are not letting ME get my way.” She’s also not good at playing hard-bitten or weary in a way that’s not stoic and bitchfaced. Ammonite was particularly awful in this regard.

[quote]It was disrespectful to the actors who won. It's getting annoying.

I would agree if the Emmys didn’t celebrate mediocrity even more than the Globes or the Oscars. C’mon, Olivia Colman wasn’t even the best performer in her category from her show..

Not to mention their hard-on for the woeful Downton Abbey.

And their worship of movie stars that earned Ellen Burstyn a nomination for a 30-second performance.

MJ Rodriguez was terrific, but she is just not as sophisticated or as subtle an actress as Olivia Colman.

Billy Porter was just doing the same histrionic shtick he always does on Pose, and he's already won two Emmys for it; there won't be another chance for Josh O'Connor to be up as prince Charles, and he very much humanized and deepened the public's idea of a very complex public figure whom most people don't understand.

I am most sorry that Michael K. Williams didn't win, because it's an absolute outrage he never won for "The Wire," and this was his last chance to win an Emmy. But no one knew that when the votes were cast (he died after they were all in), and as fine as he was in the show he did not get the material he deserved for it--it was in the end a poorly written show. And Menzies is really superb in that big scene he was with OConnor after Lord Mountbatten's death. Not knowing this was Williams' last chance at an Emmy, I would have voted for Menzies too.

Annie Murphy has been refreshingly honest about getting depressed during COVID and having to go on SSRI's. I am guessing she gained weight because of that? She's one of the most down to earth, lovely people you will meet.

She has work lined up, so I don't know whether she would be pregnant right now, but who knows?

She was married but this is the guy she's been with for awhile now...

by Anonymousreply 125September 20, 2021 7:23 PM

NOTE TO AWARD WINNERS: NEVER READ YOUR SPEECH FROM A PAPER!!!!

First it's pathetic when an actor who is trained to act can't read a speech with flair. I'm amazed how they often stumble along as they read. Second, the audience likes to think of winners to be absolutely surprised they won--this is why so many winner do the stunned look thing. All of that illusion goes to crap when you pull out a speech.

Memorize your speech! You can make it sound spontaneous (like Debbie Allen did so well) or so obviously rehearsed (like Kate Winslet's) but at least you're not distracting everyone with your notes. AND YES, KEEP IT SHORT UNLESS YOU"VE WON A MAJOR ACTING CATEGORY AND YOU"RE ALREADY A STAR. No one cared when the director of Queen's Gambit needed to thank everyone he's ever spoken to in the world. We want to see established stars emote with joy and surprise when they win, no one else.

by Anonymousreply 130September 20, 2021 7:35 PM

Most observers seem to feel it's a matter of time before the networks stop producing comedies and dramas specifically for traditional broadcast TV, which will become a collection of low-budget reality TV show and game shows plus reruns of series that run on the networks streaming service.

by Anonymousreply 131September 20, 2021 7:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 135September 20, 2021 7:41 PM

I think broadcast television will still be around a long while, just less scripted series and more reality tv.

Some shows still do well in ratings, like This Is Us, which brings in millions of viewers still.

The reason streaming and cable does better with awards is because they can tell their stories without as many censors (or none at all). A show like Game of Thrones can show it all. Imagine if it was made on CBS.

That’s why network tv doesn’t get the attention a show on HBO does.

by Anonymousreply 136September 20, 2021 7:42 PM

One of the big networks is going to have to bite the bullet and do an experimental season of premium cable/streaming type shows to try and get eyeballs back to the Networks. I know the FCC has certain requirements for network broadcasts, but there are ways to work around that. You don't always have to show tits or say fuck to put on something edgy and different. You just need to take some changes and not micromanage.

It's going to fall to NBC. CBS has their old people audience. ABC seems to have given up and is just doing game shows now.

by Anonymousreply 137September 20, 2021 7:43 PM

Does it bring in what it used to 50 years ago? Of course not, back then it’s all you had. Now there are so many options. But it’s not like TVs highest rated show is getting 1 million viewers. Hell, at its peak This Is Us was averaging 20 million a week.

That's entirely wrong from beginning to end. You are talking out of your ass.

She became famous in the UK first for playing middle-class women on the Mitchell & Webb comedy shows (especially "Peep Show"), and she got a reputation for doing comedy. Then she became a national icon when she surprised everyone at her ability to do drama when she played a police inspector--again, a middle-class working woman with a regional accent--on "Broadchurch."

Tobias Menzies in great in multiple scenes in the latest season of "The Crown": not just the drunken scene after Lord Mountbatten's death, but his scene when he's being kind and encouraging to Princess Anne (in that same episode, months later) when she's returning to competing in equestrian events and she's scared of returning; when he's going out early shooting with Lady Diana Spencer at Balmoral and shows how taken Prince Philip is with her attractiveness and her hunting know-how; when he's teasing the Queen about Diana's dancing for Charles's birthday; and most of all, in the superbly ambiguous scene in the last episode when he confronts Diana in her bedroom at Sandringham over her duty to the Queen which he wants Diana to put ahead of her misery over her unhappy marriage, and you can't tell if he's sincerely trying to help her or covertly threatening her (and Diana can't tell, either).

He genuinely deserved his Emmy last night.

by Anonymousreply 205September 21, 2021 6:18 PM

It's clear to me that people are tired of bleak TV. Schitt's Creek and Ted Lasso winning is proof of that.

The lack of awareness coming from these creators is bizarre. Did anyone with a brain thought that given the rise of the right, Trump and then a pandemic, people would watch and congratulate a story about rape? It takes a whole level of privilege to be this unaware. I'm not surprised that Micaela is this clueless, just watch her interviews.

I am myself guilty of enjoying this type of content, but now I think it's just disturbing. No one watched her show or voted for it. Why would they?

People called Lovecraft Country and Them torture porn, but I May Destroy You is way more torture porn than the former two and I'd rather watch Them any time. I actually thought that show had a better message, though not perfect.

I couldn't care less about the royals, as I'm not a 70 year old queen -- pun intended, but the performances in the few episodes I saw are worth the watch and deserving of awards.

My guess is that we'll have a bunch of new shows with a much more positive and light attitude in the next couple of years. Too bad some of these celebrities are too self absorbed in their privileged activism to get a clue.

by Anonymousreply 206September 21, 2021 6:49 PM

2. Scott Frank, the director of The Queen’s Gambit, is a boorish man

3. It says a lot about who Kate Winslet is that she didn’t need a piece of paper to remind her of people’s names and what they contributed; she was obviously a very hands on producer which was part of her achievement.

4. WandaVision got exactly what it deserved

5. Nobody mentioned Peter Morgan’s grim face when his ex, Gillian Anderson, won for The Crown - ha!

6. Taraji P. Henson is doing Annie Live?! I had to check IMBd, apparently it’s on the 2nd of December - at least they’ve given us fair warning!

7. ATJ didn’t deserve to win for TQG. The director referred to her having to deal with addiction but that was the problem with TQG - it didn’t deal with addiction or the effects of drink and drugs, it was a fantasy. Fair enough she has to learn the chess moves but the role mostly required her to “model” her way through it. It was more modelling than acting. She seems nice though, much warmer than how she comes across on screen.

[quote] I got through one episode of the Michaela Coel show. Found it boring. People are acting like she's the second coming.

No, that was Fleabag, aka MIRANDA with sex and a hipster.

Maybe they’re giving it to who they liked the most. It’s simple.
