I have a bottle of McCormick Italian seasoning.

The expiration date is August 26th 2007. Is it still safe to use? Is the exp. date only applicable if it's opened?

It will have lost potency, but probably won't make you sick or anything.

by Anonymousreply 1September 20, 2021 2:51 AM

Thank you for your kind answer. What about my Grandmother's tin of COTY Airspun face powder from the 60s. Can I use it?

by Anonymousreply 2September 20, 2021 3:03 AM

R2 No, don't do that. You're not supposed to use items that once belonged to dead people. Also, was your grandmother a prostitution whore in her days?

by Anonymousreply 3September 20, 2021 3:08 AM

That's interesting. Is this why Jayne Wrightsman gave her furniture that belonged to dead French royalty to that museum? Yes My grandmother was a poule and a very mondaine lady. But your father could confirm this.

R5 Yep, she was a whore, darlin.

by Anonymousreply 6September 20, 2021 3:28 AM

Don't use the herbs, they're probably not good anyway but if there was any moisture in the container they could have tiny bits o' mold.

Don't use the face powder for basically the same reason. The puff is probably crawling with goobers.

by Anonymousreply 7September 20, 2021 3:42 AM

How much did your granny charge op?

by Anonymousreply 8September 20, 2021 4:02 AM

OP it's safe, just may be stale or diminished in flavor. Use it in a marinade with soy, citrus, and oil and it'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 9September 20, 2021 4:05 AM

I wouldn’t use it. Go buy another.

by Anonymousreply 10September 20, 2021 4:38 AM

If it has clotted or smells sour, discard.

by Anonymousreply 11September 20, 2021 4:48 AM

What kind of person with class has seasoning that old laying around?! MARY!!!

by Anonymousreply 12September 20, 2021 12:26 PM

What about fig/nut jam that's never been opened?

by Anonymousreply 13September 20, 2021 12:53 PM

If it's airtight sealed, it is probably fine.

by Anonymousreply 14September 20, 2021 1:00 PM

Dudes, I just found a bottle of unopened poppers my gay uncle must have put in the fridge at our beach house around about 1980. Good to go?

by Anonymousreply 15September 20, 2021 3:31 PM

Also - a bottle of Sun-in. Can I frost my tips with this? Highlights are at least 200 dollahs and that's at the oriental salon.

Growing up, we had neighbors who were Italian American who explained to my mom that this was a completely made up spice and got her to throw it out and use only the root spices in combination if needed. Later, when I met Indian people, they explained the same for curry powder. They are invented spices by the Spice Industry and really deserve no place on the rack.

by Anonymousreply 17September 20, 2021 3:46 PM

What kind of asshole would buy bottled seasoning?

by Anonymousreply 18September 20, 2021 3:47 PM

R15

If it hasn't already evaporated it is probably still good since it's been unopened.

And since it's from around 1980, if you happen to like poppers, it's the good stuff.

by Anonymousreply 19September 20, 2021 3:53 PM

OP, are you poor? How expensive can a new bottle of McCormick Italian seasoning cost right now?

by Anonymousreply 20September 20, 2021 4:31 PM

[quote]Is the exp. date only applicable if it's opened?

Not really, it's the date it's supposed to be off the grocery shelf and discarded, Miss Havisham.

by Anonymousreply 21September 20, 2021 4:37 PM

McCormick 20 YO sells for high prices, keep it a little longer.

by Anonymousreply 22September 20, 2021 4:37 PM

Please don't buy Italian Seasoning. Just use Basil and Oregano.

by Anonymousreply 23September 20, 2021 4:37 PM

Yeah don't go back 14 years and buy Italian seasoning.

by Anonymousreply 24September 20, 2021 4:40 PM

DL tell me how to make homemade Italian seasoning.

by Anonymousreply 25September 20, 2021 4:41 PM

Toss it. The flavors have most likely faded so that it is worthless. Get fresh herbs and enjoy.

by Anonymousreply 26September 20, 2021 4:41 PM

Or get fresh herbs and smoke them.

by Anonymousreply 27September 20, 2021 4:45 PM

I smoke herb.

by Anonymousreply 28September 20, 2021 4:47 PM

I've been using my dear late mother's beloved stock of Jean Naté as hand sanitizer.

by Anonymousreply 29September 20, 2021 5:18 PM

McCormick, McCormick, McCormick!

by Anonymousreply 30September 20, 2021 5:20 PM

I have a container of sour cream that I never opened. It is over 3 weeks beyond the use by date. Is it really not safe to eat? It is cultured sour cream. Why would it not be safe to eat?

by Anonymousreply 31September 20, 2021 8:13 PM

like there is no difference between dairy and dry spices.

by Anonymousreply 32September 20, 2021 9:06 PM

The sour cream is cultured. It is not fresh milk.

by Anonymousreply 33September 20, 2021 9:17 PM

Haven’t they found like honey and spices in Egyptian tombs that are still viable? And I know one time they roasted up some frozen mammoth meat and ate it.

by Anonymousreply 34September 20, 2021 10:10 PM

Sure! As a test, also try sniffing some of it up your nose, and that'll keep you busy for another 50 years!

by Anonymousreply 35September 20, 2021 11:29 PM

Why don't you just buy a new one. It's like $1.

by Anonymousreply 36September 20, 2021 11:33 PM

$3.50

by Anonymousreply 37September 20, 2021 11:34 PM

I don't like waste. During COVID I cleaned out the the fallout shelter my father built behind my childhood home, in the 50s. I found so much good food and used it up in 2020. Thanks Dad!

by Anonymousreply 38September 21, 2021 1:12 AM

The old Coty powder works fine, fellas! It's never been bettered, no matter how fancy.

OP, the rats that left their powdered dung in the jar were dead 10 years before you bought it, as were the spiders who donated their legs to the herbs (allegedly) in your little "mix."

So snort it. Please.

by Anonymousreply 40September 21, 2021 1:34 AM

cheap bastard
