Julianne Moore recalls the slap scene with Madonna in Body of Evidence - and Sandra Bernhard responds

LOL @ Sandra's comment.

Bitter but still funny.

Where's Sandra's comment?

by Anonymousreply 1September 19, 2021 2:19 AM

Neither Julianne nor Sandra's comments are visible unless you're logged in to Instagram.

Julianne: #fbf to that time I got to be in a movie with @madonna - I was super nervous. And FYI the slap was not real.

Jeez, Hugh Jackman doesn't look so great for 52. The lines, bags under his eyes...and above them...some would say normal, but wait until he's actually 60. He'll probably look closer to 70.

Thanks R2.

by Anonymousreply 4September 19, 2021 2:26 AM

Rita Wilson chimes in: "What movie was this?!?" That's a little passive-aggressively cunty, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 5September 19, 2021 2:26 AM

Bad actors we pretend are great: Julianne Moore. The scene in Still Alice where she tells her husband she thinks she has Alzheimer’s…my god she was awful.

by Anonymousreply 6September 19, 2021 2:30 AM

Sandra's Twitter name is Sandrag Bernhardt? That would be an acceptable drag queen name.

by Anonymousreply 7September 19, 2021 2:32 AM

R6 Moore is okay as an actress but most of her critical accolades are for still being sufficiently hot at 50.

by Anonymousreply 8September 19, 2021 3:00 AM

She’s actually 60

by Anonymousreply 9September 19, 2021 3:34 AM

R7 Sandbag would be more appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 10September 19, 2021 3:40 AM

I always thought she rises above her limitations and soapiness because she chooses interesting characters she can take to over the top places. Porn star, 50-60's wife of a gay man, a hypochondriac, suicidal housewife. There's little room to go wrong when you are playing an extreme character. She's good at it. But she is a bit overrated. She is best playing characters with a tick. Not just a person.

by Anonymousreply 11September 19, 2021 3:45 AM

I have no memory of her from Body of Evidence. That movie was so awful. A really bad rip off of Basic Instinct. And William Dafoe is a great actor but he looks like a skinny Anne Ramsey to me, he wasn’t sexy enough for that role.

by Anonymousreply 12September 19, 2021 3:58 AM

Does anyone even remember this Madonna movie?! I think it was made about the time her film career was hitting rock bottom.

by Anonymousreply 13September 19, 2021 4:13 AM

Body of Evidence came out in January 1993, which was an obvious sign it was a stinker since movies that are banished to January are usually films studios just want to get out and over with.

It was also the third part of Madonna's Sex trilogy with the Sex book and the Erotica album.

By January '93, people had enough of Madonna and her sex antics. So the film was destined to flop and the critics had their knives out.

by Anonymousreply 14September 19, 2021 4:15 AM

I watched this movie last month for the first time and i thought she'd be the one good thing, but i was wrong. Everyone is terrible and i can't think of an unsexier pairing.

by Anonymousreply 15September 19, 2021 1:58 PM

Is it me but does she go to slap her with her left hand and then when the camera cuts to her she uses her right hand?

by Anonymousreply 16September 19, 2021 2:09 PM

I saw this a couple of weeks ago. (I DVRed it from some cable channel.)

It wasn't as bad as I remembered, and Madonna wasn't as dreadful as I remembered - although she IS completely unconvincing in her role.

But then, so is Julianne Moore.

If it weren't for the sex scenes (which I fast forwarded through, especially the idiotic one with the hot wax), this would have been more enjoyably trashy.

And as far as I'm concerned, the movie was more "entertaining" (for lack of a better word) than Basic Instinct 2, which I tried watching last week on HBO On Demand.

by Anonymousreply 17September 19, 2021 2:15 PM

I wanted to slap her many times. I told Julianne "Watch it toots, you're in my light."

by Anonymousreply 18September 19, 2021 2:16 PM

Madonna in Body of Evidence is like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct but with peasant witch face. God she is ugly.

by Anonymousreply 19September 19, 2021 2:24 PM

“Peasant witch face” - what an evocative description. That’s good.

by Anonymousreply 20September 19, 2021 2:45 PM

"William Dafoe"

Oh, dear.

If I recall, Madge was at her peak. She looked gorgeous, had just recorded some good albums and was in a Major Motion Picture. But the Sex book was a bad idea, and she was wooden in the campy BOE.

She didn't regain public respect again til she did "Evita" and got pregnant.

by Anonymousreply 21September 19, 2021 3:21 PM

At least Basic Instinct had a cheesy club scene.

Jackman has looked like that for the past 20 yrs.

by Anonymousreply 23September 19, 2021 3:58 PM

The movie is so bad the slap scene doesn’t even work as camp.

by Anonymousreply 24September 19, 2021 4:15 PM

Madonna was the queen of reverse cowgirl in this movie! In a parking garage, on a car with broken glass all around, EDGY! Using her thrusts to take her pleasure, make men's hearts pop, to the benefit of her bank account!

by Anonymousreply 25September 19, 2021 5:02 PM

I watched this again the other night on Tubi, I think. I saw it at the movies when it first came out. Big screen theater on 81st and First (I think) in NY. I loved the theater. And the screen was huge. I was underwhelmed at the time, though. Although people were howling with laughter at her acting "choices": "I fuck. That's what I do!" And of course the audience screamed out, "Yes, but not well"!

Anyway, I was watching it the other night on Tubi and I thought it had a certain smarmy charm to it. It was very early 90s soft porn (it really should have been on SkineMax instead). It looks like a low-rent version of Basic Instinct, which is what it is. Madonna isn't horrible in it. There are scenes where she almost rises above the awful material given her. The problem is if the director wants her to "act" it's not going to be pretty. Why her directors didn't take Susan Seidleman's tack and just tell her to read the lines like she's being herself, it may have had a better result. In any event, it's a hoot. Madonna is not the only one acting badly here. Willem is awful, as is Joe Mantegna and Julianne Moore. And dear God, Anne Archer looks like she is recovering from malaria and is acting like someone is holding a gun to her head. It's quite a treat.

by Anonymousreply 26June 21, 2022 6:20 AM

I saw this movie with a friend when if first came out. We couldn’t stop laughing and rolling our eyes. It was like, Madonna! Put your clothes on!

It was generally agreed at the time that Madonna saw Basic Instinct and said, “I want one of those.” Yeah, except a boring one.

It did a lot for Sharon Stone at the time, demonstrating that what she did was NOT easy.

I'm reminded of the Todd in the Shadows review of this movie, where he shows a clip of some bad acting my Moore and he has a small arrow pop down on the screen, pointing directly at Moore and saying "Oscar winner". Hahaha.

Oh sorry, I got my quote wrong. After Madonna said that she fucks and that's what she does, someone yelled out, "Well you're doing a good job of fucking this movie!" That was it. Watching that movie was like watching Rocky Horror. Maybe the midnight movie circuit is an option. Or maybe MST 3000?

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2022 6:29 AM

I've always thought you could show Body of Evidence in an acting class. Two women, same movie, one terrible, one pretty good given the material.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2022 7:31 AM

It's a terrible film, and Madonna is terrible in it. But she is at her most goddessy-beautiful in it.

by Anonymousreply 31June 21, 2022 8:02 AM

"Have you ever seen animals make love, Frank?"

by Anonymousreply 32June 21, 2022 8:14 AM

I think this movie turned me off Madonna forever.

Don't get me wrong.

I still love all of her early hits when they're sung by someone else like the Glee cast.

Seriously, Jane Lynch does a pretty good version of Vogue.

Better than Madonna for sure.

by Anonymousreply 33June 21, 2022 8:18 AM

Confession (although this might have been a better entry for the Guilty Pleasures thread).

I went to see her remake of Swept Away, and I liked it. My buddy dragged me to it because he was a huge Madonna fan. It was an afternoon matinee. There were only 2 other people in the theater. We both were hoping we'd be howling throughout, expecting it would be laughably bad. We were concerned it might just be really boring, (which it kind of was the first 20 minutes). But somewhere along the way I did get "swept away" , and when it ended, I turned to me friend, "you know, it really wasn't that bad." And he agreed. He also enjoyed it, for the right reasons.

I only saw it that one time, but I think the critics might have just been out to get her. And yes, I saw the original - which was great - (my friend had not) - Obviously this wasn't as good, but I thought it was a decent effort.

How small a minority am I in?

by Anonymousreply 34June 21, 2022 8:31 AM

You may not be, R34. You may have a point about people going into a Madonna film presold on the idea she and it will be terrible. I dunno, because I haven't seen it, but I have seen other Madonna movies and she really can go anywhere from decent (A League of Their Own, Desperately Seeking Susan), fine (Dick Tracy) to terrible (Body of Evidence). I've not seen it, but I've heard her performance in Snake Eyes/Dangerous Game was really great.

by Anonymousreply 35June 21, 2022 9:06 AM

It had the potential to be camptastic but it’s just plain bad.

by Anonymousreply 36June 21, 2022 11:47 AM

Minuscule, R34.

by Anonymousreply 37June 21, 2022 12:57 PM

I watched Body Of Evidence recently thinking only Madonna would be terrible but i was so wrong. Everyone was shit, including Julianne. Showgirls it ain't.

by Anonymousreply 38June 21, 2022 2:37 PM

That movie tried so hard to be edgy. I wish it had worked because then we would have another incredibly sleazy camp movie to go with Basic Instinct. I rolled my eyes during the parking garage pussy eating scene.

by Anonymousreply 39June 22, 2022 10:53 AM

I want a long drawn-out scene of the lovers first lighting all the 1000 candles they always have handy before they start phucking like rabbits.

by Anonymousreply 40June 22, 2022 11:03 AM

R34, Madonna in Swept Away is one of the worst actress/movie pairings I’ve ever seen
