Now this AUKUS should be interesting. The Anglo world joins hands to counter China!
We will see how this works out. Why isn't Canada a part of it? Maybe it will work better without Boris.
Is this Biden's initiative, or has this been in the works from before? Will this pan out to be an economic partnership as well you think.
Please- No dumb bitchy remarks trying to pass vulgarity for wit. TIA.

Isn't this just a development of the Five Eyes, but without Canada - currently in election mode - and New Zealand, which has made clear it will accept China's genocide of the Uighur people because China are such important trading partners.
The European Union and its member states send strongly worded tweets about China and Russia and Belarus but they do fuck all about it.

Canada’s not involved this time because it doesn’t have the ability to project a military/naval presence in the Far East (or is that West?) Pacific region. It along with NZ are still part of the UKUSA (five eyes) alliance.

I don't get the "threat to the international rules-based order" from China claiming some rocks in the South China Sea. Countries in SE Asia have a problem with that, but they also have territorial issues with each other over the same rocks.
Also, those rocks that Japan took from China totally should be returned to China, or at least Taiwan. Japan shouldn't be allowed to keep any territory they acquired from their imperial adventures through WWII.
This just screams insecurity, but also a desperation that they can provoke China into a fight. I think China sees the angles just as well. I don't think it'll be fooled. China would love it if the West just keeps wasting money on arms.

Yes that’s why they’re so happy about this pact.
How are the Australians going to afford multiple nuclear submarines? I’m not saying Australia is a poor country by any stretch, but the country has quite a small military to defend a nation the territorial size of the USA, and now they will have a FLEET of incredibly expensive submarines?

Apparently the Australian finance minister can’t say how much it will cost, which isn’t a surprise considering how much money Australia wastes on submarines or planes while harassing welfare recipients over mistaken debts until they kill themselves.

This is unrelated to the five eyes treaty. It's just about the sharing of nuclear submarine technology. If and when Canada decides to acquire the same tech no doubt there will be some new CAUKUS treaty signed and the focus will be on stopping Russia in the Arctic.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 17, 2021 3:32 PM

Apparently the deal, even with more expensive nuclear technology and after 'penalty payments' to the French, will still be cheaper than the old deal. I'm guessing the U.K. and U.S. have offered Australia good terms.
It also shouldn't come as complete surprise - The Times stated that Australia has been unhappy with French conditions, including the reduced Australian production under their terms, and the ever increasing costs (which have nearly doubled) on top of the unacceptably lengthening delays.

R43 Countries like Australia and New Zealand are too insignificant for China to target. But if they have or want to gain nuclear capabilities, then that's a whole different ball game.

r44 They were targets because they're obvious naval bases for the US Pacific fleet. which is China's only opposition in the event of WW3. Also "But if they have or want to gain nuclear capabilities" A nuclear POWERED submarine is not the same thing as a nuclear ARMED submarine. If you genuinely thought the UK and US were arming Australia with the bomb you're a retard.

Has China actually apologized for Covid19 yet? Or are they still blaming Australia for exporting contaminated frozen meat.
Let's just look a couple of years ahead. The rest of the world will ask for compensation from China for the millions of lives lost and the billions of economic damage. Esp if it can be proven that the virus escaped, because of low security standards from the Wuhan lab. And for China not alerting the world about this virus and for not agreeing to an independent investigation into the origins of covid.

Nobody is going to ask for any compensation. The virus escaped from China, probably that lab in Wuhan. The Chinese are denying, as always. But nobody is going to ask for reparations. And the Chinese wouldn't pay anyway.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday called for countries to embrace COVID-19 “transparency” and “accountability” – without directly calling out China’s refusal to come clean about the origins of the pandemic.
Harris made the remark while announcing that the Biden administration would give $250 million to a new World Bank pandemic preparedness fund and request another $850 million from Congress.
