How ‘Go Your Own Way’ Helped Lindsey Buckingham Get Over Stevie Nicks

Following his romantic breakup with bandmate Stevie Nicks in 1975, Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham was desolate. In an attempt to move beyond the rejection that left bitter feelings, he wrote “Go Your Own Way.”

When the song was released in December 1976, it was the first single from the band’s “Rumours” album and climbed to No. 10 on Billboard’s pop chart, where it remained for 15 weeks. And it wasn’t the only song on the album about their breakup. Ms. Nicks’s song, “Dreams,” which went to No. 1, is her take on their volatile relationship and split.

Recently, Mr. Buckingham looked back on the song and the events that inspired the words and music. His new album, “Lindsey Buckingham” (Reprise), is due out on Sept. 17. Ms. Nicks declined to comment on Mr. Buckingham’s reflections or their relationship.

He’s really dragging out the old shit for his album promo this time. These two nuts deserve one another. (And Silver Springs is a better breakup song.)
