I am an admitted PrEP worrier. I was born in 1978 and my formative coming of age years were during the height of the AIDS epidemic. The idea of PrEP preventing HIV infection is thrilling; however, it was originally marketed to be used as an adjunct to condoms, and it is now used exclusively by most gay men as a magic pill for free love, and that freaks me out a lot. It makes me think of gay porn from the 70s when guys were transmitting their death sentences on camera without any idea that they were doing it or a care in the world. It worries me. It's a function of my age and lifelong fears.

Does 'severe negative side effects' include being widely known as a cheap, easy ho?

However, I'm probably one of the few gay Millenials who has no interest in taking PrEP due to the known side effects.

I don't know about OP's history, but during the pandemic I became addicted to daytime tv as background noise and during those court shows commercial breaks there were constant ads on millions set aside by manufactures of Prep and similar necessary drugs, for death, extensive liver failure, osteoporosis and many other absurd deadly side effects this stupid drug does, so that people can bareback.

I've saved one at my FB bookmarks, it's not just side effects, PREP is deadly, it was turned down for a reason.

Silly thread. Most gay men are only intensely sexually active for about 25 years. Usually from about ages 20-45. After that, sexual activity doesn't come to a stop, but it wanes and become more intermittent. So we're not talking about lifelong anything. Secondly, most gay men don't have anal sex casually (as in multiple times daily with strangers). That would be a tiny subset of gay men. For most gay men, lots of conditions have to be met before they have anal sex. They have to be outside of their working hours, they have to have an opportunity to void and clean up before hand, they have to be in a comfortable setting with a bed and lubricant, and they have to have a willing partner at hand - not such a easy trio of circumstances as it might seem at first glance. For most unpartnered gay men, anal sex would be, at most, a once-a-week event. Lots of other sex might take place in that time, because it's much easier to do oral or manual sex on the fly with no preparation, but anal would be much rarer. So OP's image of millions of young gay men taking multiple loads nightly from strangers while they gobble PREP like pez tablets is some sort of fetish fantasy all his own.

So not only do guys get to have endless sex with the meds, but they also get paid for it? Jeeze.

I have bone loss in my jaw that I think was exacerbated by PrEP. It's hard to get confirmation of this because it straddles a line that no doctor or dentist/periodontist seems willing to cross. The doctors say "talk to your dentist" and the dentists say "talk to your doctor".

So, I've stopped taking PrEP regularly and use event based dosing guidelines from the UK NHS. My doctor gave me the standard spiel that you have to take PrEP for at least a week before it becomes effective. So I asked him how PEP could work then? That got us talking about "on demand" PrEP and he signed off on my usage it.

I don't have any trust in the morals of the pharmaceutical industry. Their only goal with PrEP is to sell as much Truvada as possible. They don't even understand the mechanism of how it prevents HIV infection, much less all of the side effects.

What a bunch of worry warts. PrEP protects against HIV, no need for condoms. PrEP now allows us to have as much sex with as many people as we want. Life's a banquet.

Prep has a list of horrible side effects a mile long. I know every side effect has to be listed during a drug trial but several are more than less common.

Been on PrEP for years. Not one side effect.

All pharmaceuticals you put into your body are going to have side effects. It's the trade off you get for treatment or prevention. People experiencing liver or kidney problems with Truvada or PrEP should not be surprised. Of course people who eschew medical treatment altogether are always worse off. Liver problems are better than having HIV.

Depends on the liver problem, R25, but yes, if the only options for a guy are tons of promiscuous unprotected sex with a drug that causes liver problems or tons of promiscuous unprotected sex resulting in HIV that requires drug treatments that can cause liver problems, then the "no HIV" option is the better one.
