This is a two part ballot, so even if you’re voting NO on the recall, it’s still essential that you vote for the candidate of your choice IN CASE Newsom does get recalled. If the recall is successful, the candidate with the most votes becomes governor, so if you don’t vote, we could end up with a repug.
California Democrats, please be careful when you vote in the recall election…

Look around you. Look at the artificially inflated gas prices. Look at all the homeless people sleeping in the streets and under overpasses. Look at the cost of living go up and up and up out of proportion to what things are actually worth. If you think this is doing a good job, then I would really hate to see what a bad one looks like.

I live in California, and I hate it. Just looking at the jokers in the list of candidates and knowing how much this recall will cost us pisses me off. Or Caitlynn or the black preacher from Hemet or the guy with goggles on.

June 7, 2022 is the date of the California primary, which will include the governor's office. If you are unhappy with Newsom, you can wait until then to replace him, why give it to a traitorous Republican who will pick the replacement for the 88 year old Feinstein if she dies between now and then and send the US Senate into the hands of Moscow Mitch. Don't screw the entire country because you are unhappy with Newsom.

Yep, you’re right as usual. We Californians should have chosen the Republican candidate over the old, senile Democrat candidate that was forced on us instead of a vibrant, young progressive that the Democrats could have run. It’s exactly what happened ! No Republican made the run off that year. Di-Fi beat one of the best politicians in the state Kevin De Leon (D) to win re-election. Every news media said it was imperative for Di-Fi to be re-elected because Di-Fi’s experience was important to Democrats who needed to win back the Senate. Newsom and the California Democratic Party endorsed De Leon.

I think people really underestimate how fed up Californians are about the homeless issue. While it is definitely a complex issue, this has become the new "the criminals (homeless) have all the rights". The dems like Newsom, Garcetti and Bonin are all viewed as being soft on the issue and when Bonin said he was once homeless, you knew many people simply stopped listening because some interpreted as having greater empathy with the homeless than homeowners.
Newsom has no chance of being retained because the majority of his voting base has been negatively galvanized by this one issue.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 18, 2021 1:17 AM |
Putting the above points aside for a moment: who should we vote for in Part 2 to take over in case the recall does succeed? I think it should be a Dem because the new Gov would have to appoint Feinstein's replacement in the U.S. Senate if she were to die or retire. There are only 2 Dems on the ballot:
1/ Kevin Paffrath, 29, who gives financial advice to his 1.7 million YouTube subscribers. The Democrat says his lack of "political baggage" is a good thing. His proposals include building underground tunnels for new roadways and cutting income taxes;
2/ Joel Ventresca, 69, is a Democrat though says he's further to the left than Newsom, whom he called a "corporate, establishment, insider Democrat." Ventresca's main campaign platform is providing free health care and education "cradle to grave" for everyone in California. He retired in 2018 from the San Francisco International Airport, where he held multiple roles.
The replacement Gov's term would last only until after the regular election of Nov 2022 (when Newsom could be re-elected or the replacement Gov could be elected, or someone new could be elected), but he could do a lot of damage (or good) in that short period of time. So who's better, or at least less bad: Paffrath or Ventresca?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 18, 2021 1:48 AM |
r27 apparently knows nothing about how California's elections work. There WAS no Republican candidate in the final election.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 18, 2021 12:54 PM |
I was wrong at R35 -- there aren't only 2 Dem candidates on the Calif ballot. There are actually 7 more, though none of them strikes me as capable of being taken seriously (and none of them seems to be garnering much support so far):
Holly Baade -- self-described mother/business owner
John Drake -- self-described college student
Armando Perez-Serrato -- no info given by candidate
Daniel Watts -- self-described free speech lawyer
Patrick Kilpatrick -- self-described actor/screenwriter/producer
Brandon Ross -- self-described physician/attorney
Jacqueline McGowan -- self-described cannabis policy advisor
I'm not at all sure that Paffrath or Ventresca discussed at R35 is any more qualified, but at least they're exciting some interest among voters. So which one should I vote for after voting against recall?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 18, 2021 7:42 PM |
r27 If you voted in November 2018, the general election for Senate was between two Democrats. The younger progressive Dem fucked up by opening his mouth on Israel....sent a lot of Jewish Dems and $$ to Feinstein that might have stayed neutral or gone to him otherwise. He lost 55-45.
CA has a jungle primary, two dems were top votegetters in primary

The problem with Kevin Faulconer is that he's not a Dem. If Feinstein retires or dies, the successor to her Senate seat will be appointed by the Calif Gov -- if that's a Republican, no matter how moderate, he's likely to appoint a Republican as Senator -- that would give the GOP control of the Senate and return Mitch McConnell to the leadership.

Because Newsom's legal case is that whatever the vote total anti-recall is, will be more than the highest vote-getter for Round 1 and THEREFORE, the recall should be thrown out since he is still the governor and letting someone who gets just 20% of the vote serve is unconstitutional. Unfortunately, that is the scenario under which Schwarzenegger served and the US Supreme Court is not about to stop Elder because the Governor's lawyers are pursuing a failed strategy.

by Anonymous | reply 97 | August 24, 2021 2:52 AM |
Shockingly and unbelievably, "Vote no on 1, leave 2 blank" is, in fact, the official position of California's Democratic Party. And IMHO, it's completely, suicidally, fucking INSANE.
Their rationale: if they encourage voters to pick a "Plan B" Democrat, Newsom might lose a few votes if Democrats vote 'yes' for the recall in the hope that their preferred Democrat will replace him.
The obvious danger: If Newsom loses by even a single vote, and California's Democrats take the Party's official advice and leave question #2 blank, California's next governor will almost CERTAINLY be a Republican. Possibly even Larry Elder.
Do the sane thing: vote 'no' for question #1 (indicating your preference for keeping Newsom), then fuck the Party Line, and vote for a reasonable Democrat for question #2. Paffrath is a Democrat, and is apparently just slightly behind Elder in the polls. So, vote for him, and hope that vote ultimately ends up being unnecessary. But for the love of God, Xenu, and everything ever alleged to be holy, don't leave question #2 blank unless you want to risk electing Larry Elder as Governor by virtue of your own inaction.
Leaving question #2 blank is NO DIFFERENT than boycotting an election and handing victory to the Republicans unopposed. And make no mistake... the likelihood that Newsom might lose the recall election and cause whomever wins the most votes from question #2 to become the next governor is real. Take it seriously. Encourage your friends to vote 'no' on question 1... then be sane & hedge their bets on a Democrat for question #2 (preferably, one with a realistic chance of beating Larry Elder, like Paffrath).
by Anonymous | reply 98 | August 24, 2021 6:23 AM |
... and after this election is over, change that idiotic recall law to automatically include the incumbent governor on the "replacement" list. That way, in future recall elections, the Party can tell people, "vote no on #1, and vote for the governor for #2, so that even if he loses #1, the recall will prevail unless someone ELSE is able to muster more votes via question #2". The current recall rules are STUPID, precisely because there are so many ways they can result in an outcome the majority of voters are likely to find objectionable REGARDLESS of outcome.

r104, the fundamental problem with the current recall law is that the incumbent can be kicked out by a 49.999% 'no' vote, then replaced by someone who only got 8% of votes (in a contest with dozens or hundreds of candidates splitting the vote) since part 2 requires only a first-past-the-post plurality.
In other words, a minority of voters can game the system to unseat a governor who lacks an absolute majority of supporters, but still has WAY more supporters than whomever gets the most votes as their replacement.
The proper solution would be for recall & replacement elections to be independent of each other, and for replacement elections to be run like normal ones (ie, primary, then election, then runoff if necessary)... but that would be too slow, expensive, and impractical.
Allowing the incumbent to re-run as his/her own replacement would ensure that a governor's replacement had to win at least as many votes as the voters who wanted to keep them (assuming they voted for them as their fallback choice).
Another possibility would be to dispense with the second part altogether, and simply replace a recalled governor with the Lieutenant Governor and replace the LG via the usual process.
Another possibility would be to pick the replacement via a Condorcet method. This is arguably the best way to pick a replacement for a removed Governor, but trying to explain Condorcet rules to normal people is damn-near impossible... and in an election with potentially hundreds of candidates and millions of voters, the cloud computing resources (like Amazon AWS) necessary to determine the winner within a day or two could cost hundreds of millions of dollars & approach the computational complexity of Bitcoin mining (because you have to calculate every conceivable permutation of votes for every voter & candidate to basically determine who's the least-disliked compromise if nobody has an actual majority). It's very hard to explain to normal people why somebody who was the first choice of almost nobody (but the second, third, or fourth choice of a narrow majority who grudgingly viewed them as 'tolerable') should beat two candidates who got 45 and 39% of first-choice votes (but were the last choice of the other's supporters.
Basically, Condorcet rules punish polarizing candidates, while giving centrist candidates nobody is really *enthused* about, but views as the lesser-evil, a huge boost. So, in a hypothetical election between Trump, Romney, Biden, Bernie, and AOC, Trump & AOC would have almost zero chances of winning because more people despise them than prefer them. Out of the remaining 3, the winner would probably be Biden, since he'd have been almost everyone's second or third choice in a race with a roughly 50-50 split between Republicans & Democrats. HOWEVER, if Republicans tried to game it by only voting for Romney and/or Trump, Condorcet rules would treat votes for "nobody else" as ambivalent, equal votes FOR "everybody else", potentially giving Bernie an edge. It's a great scheme for picking least-opposed consensus candidates, but almost impossible to explain to normal people. In theory, it SHOULD produce outcomes similar to a "Jungle Primary" to pick 2 candidates followed by run-off elections if necessary in a state where two parties are strong & disciplined... but in reality, Condorcet rules encourage more marginal candidates to run, making things a bit more "unpredictable"
Condorcet rules also make accurate polling damn-near impossible in a race with dozens or hundreds of candidates, because even a subtle selection bias could be massively amplified & completely throw the poll's results.

[quote] In other words, a minority of voters can game the system to unseat a governor who lacks an absolute majority of supporters, but still has WAY more supporters than whomever gets the most votes as their replacement.
You’re glossing over that it requires a majority vote to unseat the governor. So it’s not a minority of voters gaming the system to unseat him. It’s a majority vote unseating him. Also, once the majority has indicated they don’t want the incumbent, it makes no sense to allow him to be on the replacement list where he could be returned by only a plurality (and be subject to another recall).
by Anonymous | reply 106 | August 24, 2021 3:57 PM |
R102 is correct.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | August 24, 2021 4:03 PM |
r106, you're not wrong... and this mostly illustrates why conceptually "simple" solutions often create complex problems.
Ultimately, the present Recall law is a badly-flawed mechanism that can be easily exploited by a noisy, active minority to harass a candidate who gets elected by a majority that later becomes semi-ambivalent about them, and result in the election of people who wouldn't have a chance in HELL of getting elected to the same position in a "normal" election.
IMHO, a better solution would be to make the rules a little more complex:
1. A recall election is a single-issue ballot: should the present governor be retained, or should they be removed? If the 'yes' votes prevail with a majority, the Governor is removed from office and replaced by the Lieutenant Governor. A new LG is appointed via the normal mechanism.
2. The new Governor's term (held by the former Lieutenant Governor) is truncated to coincide with the present 2-year election cycle for the House of Representatives. If the term is truncated, it does NOT count against the term limit.
If these rules applied to the present situation, that would mean that if Newsom were successfully recalled, the Lieutenant Governor would have to run again in the normal Fall 2022 election... but for term limit purposes, THAT would be considered their first term. If whomever won for Governor in 2022 were recalled in 2023, the schedule of future Governor elections would be shifted forward by 2 years, so the next Gubernatorial election would be held in 2024 instead of 2026.
Basically, the Lieutenant Governor would always replace the recalled governor until the next major 2-year election, and if a recall happened during the first 2 years of a Governor's term, the remainder of that term would be truncated to the next major election cycle.
This way, you still have a clean, fair way for voters to remove a governor who pisses too many people off... but you reduce the incentive for a grumpy polarized minority to throw monkey wrenches at the majority winner by ensuring that whomever replaces them will still be from the same party.
The replacement will probably think long and hard about blindly following in the recalled governor's exact footsteps if they want to have any chance of winning the next "real" election in a year or two, but they're also unlikely to give the other party's voters much or any of what they're clamoring for. Likewise, by getting gubernatorial terms rapidly back on track with the semi-annual major election cycle (dictated by the House of Representatives), California could avoid turning recalls into a never-ending circus with expensive special election after expensive special election.
This also gives the party of a recalled governor a year or two to take a breath, do some hard soul-searching, and decide whether it wants to stand behind the new (former-LG) Governor as its official candidate in the next "real" election, or stand back and make them compete in the Primary election cycle like everyone else. It takes the immediate 'crisis' pressure off of them to get any warm body from the same party elected as a preferential option to anyone from the other party (by putting the Lieutenant Governor into the role), and then gives them a few months to gauge public sentiment over the new (former LG) Governor's performance and policies (and their likelihood of winning a real, competitive election against strong opponents) before blindly throwing the Party's weight behind them.

r112 is a troll. Google it. A "no" vote for question 1 is a vote to KEEP Newsom (you're saying "no" to the recall). Any reputable source (CNN, LA Times, etc) will confirm this.
That said, ignore the California Democratic Party's recklessly insane advice to "keep the message simple" and "leave question 2 blank". The risk Newsom might lose is low... but real. If you leave #2 blank, it's like sitting out the metaphorical followup election and leaving the choice of his successor to the Republicans. Vote 'no' for #1, then pick a mostly-harmless Democrat (say, Paffrath) as a fallback in case the 'yes' votes prevail.
California's Democrats are playing Russian Roulette by telling people to leave question 2 blank. There is NO strategic advantage to Newsom, as long as you vote 'no' for #1.
If 'no' prevails, question 2 is MOOT. If 'yes' prevails, whomever gets the most votes in question 2 will be California's next governor. For god's sake, make sure it's a Democrat & don't hand victory to the Republicans by leaving question 2 blank. Smug overconfidence made Hillary lose. Learn from her goddamn mistake & don't let it happen again!

While many people are debating his political future right now, we’re going to tell you about something he did outside the world of politics.
Our politician is a smart and charismatic guy, so women have always been more than happy to date or marry him.
However, you may not know that our man has been known to engage s*x workers to take care of his needs. He did this regularly.
He had a rotating lineup of girls he would use. Most of the girls did not last long in the rotation.
Why not?
They would always come back with stories about how drunk/ high/ crazy/ scary he was.
Example?
One night he requested [Woman] for an outcall.
When she got there he was already totally wasted. She knew that he got weird when he was drunk or high, but this particular night he was whacked out of his mind and angry about something.
There was a fireplace in the room. At some point he grabbed the fireplace poker and ran around the room butt n*ked, chasing her with the poker. He was yelling, “I’m going to jam this fire poker through your eye!”
Yikes! What did she do?
She screamed and ran out of the room. She got away without getting hurt. He kept requesting her after that, but she refused to ever do a call with him again.
Was this a unique situation?
No, he went through tons of girls and they all have stories about how crazy he is. He can be scary.
We know that our politician had/has designs on being President of The United States some day. However, could you imagine the kind of scrutiny he would face if he ran for President?
He doesn’t even have the luxury of claiming that this happened before he became a politician. Or that it was an isolated incident. He was definitely an elected public official at the time of this story. And there are lots of these women out there.
Again, this is a very famous politician. Even if you don’t follow politics, you absolutely KNOW HIM..
He has been the subject of some controversy lately, so we don’t know exactly what his future holds.
However, when we see him on TV now, we can’t get that picture out of our head of him running around with a fire poker… no clothes… whacked out of his mind… and threatening to jam someone’s eye out!

That just isn't going to happen, r193. No matter how many idiotic posts you fill this thread with.

You’re asking for another Civil War if Newsom is not recalled.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | August 25, 2021 9:58 PM |
Vote yes on the recall or your voting rights will be revoked altogether if we need a fucking constitutional amendment to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | August 25, 2021 9:59 PM |
I cannot believe the people who sign the petition for the dangerous recall effort. This is not funny. This is dangerous. You need to stop this. VOTE NO. Stop this. We cannot let anyone on that list become our next governor this is crazy.
Vote no-against the recall and keep gavin newsom in office. PLEASE. This is dangerous.

Nothing but ad hominem attacks and mental health slurs. No substance yet.
Vote Yes on the recall or do not fucking vote at all.

Vote NO on the first question of your ballot. This is a voting resource for you all too.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | August 25, 2021 10:44 PM |

How many registered Republican' are falling for this dangerous recall election? I thought the California republican party was supposed to be Moderate. Now, they are Covid Hoaxers and Fascist. If you are a sane Republican and Independent, we need you to VOTE NO, against this recall and keep Gavin Newsom in office. This is dangerous. We are having a serious Pandemic.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | August 26, 2021 1:58 AM |
Well, at least California's Democratic leaders appear to have finally come to their senses and improved their message:
* Boldly tell people to vote 'no' for #1, and explain why ("defeat the recall & keep Newsom"), then
* shut up and leave it at that (instead of creeping people out with bizarre instructions to "leave #2 blank" in total contradiction of common sense & sanity, which made the first version literally sound like something a Russian troll farm came up with.)
by Anonymous | reply 209 | August 26, 2021 1:59 AM |
Newsom got scared by the rightwing mob that went to Sacramento and opened too soon allowing Covid to sneak in and mow down the Latin community of California.
The Magas still recalled him. He didn't change the outcome by sacrificing the Latino community. He was better off remaining closed.
It's all about L.A county folks . Latinos vote, the governor will remain. There are not enough Republican votes to offset Los Angeles county.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | August 26, 2021 2:27 AM |
Stop the scaremongering. Gavin Newsom's party has a virtual monopoly on the state and they let it turn to shit on purpose. They are the ones who got richer while everyone else got poorer.
Vote yes on the recall. We literally cannot afford anymore of this shit.

Exactly, r215. For any rational person reading this thread, please Ignore r213 and check his other posts in this thread. Vote NO, it's important for California that the Rethugs don't succeed at this take-over attempt.

You can't push a button and ignore poverty.
by Anonymous | reply 223 | August 26, 2021 4:21 AM |
r213, no, it's basic common sense to hedge your bets. None of the nominal Democrats running as potential replacements are more desirable than Newsom, but they're STILL better than the Republicans who'd be guaranteed to win if 50%+1 of voters choose 'yes' and ONLY Republicans were on the list of potential replacements.
It's a fine line. You don't want to encourage any Democrats to vote 'yes' in the hope of replacing Newsom with a Democrat they like better, but you ALSO don't want to risk handing the Governor's office to a Republican for lack of a Democrat if Newsom ends up losing by 50 votes.
The original "leave #2 blank" mantra was *creepy*, and made lots of people MISTRUST and DISMISS the original message precisely BECAUSE it sounded so bizarre, counter-intuitive, and just plain weird & cult-like.

I wish who keeps saying to leave the second question blank would just stop it.
Vote NO and vote in Democrat leading. For fucks sake if an unqualified dem gets in he can protect the senate seat and then get bumped out by a better DEM candidate in 2022. Why would you leave it blank, moron?
by Anonymous | reply 228 | August 26, 2021 5:05 AM |
The reason is the other ones are not real democrats. They are crazy and not qualified for this position. You can do a deep dive on them and come to the same conclusions. The people are this list are not qualified. This is why we have to keep Gavin Newsom in office. So please VOTE NO on the first question. We need to keep Gavin Newsom in office. Furthermore, it is mathematically improbable, a long shot.
Please VOTE NO.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | August 26, 2021 5:11 AM |
But who is the democratic leaning candidate? You can vote for someone, but they are not qualified. Gavin Newsom is very qualified. He is smart and hard working. We really have to keep him.
Vote NO, on the first question. This is a vote against the recall. This keeps Gavin Newsom in office.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | August 26, 2021 5:13 AM |
There is no reason to believe doing the same things over and over will yield better results. Vote yes and clean up this mess.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | August 26, 2021 6:09 AM |
r230, you are only providing partial information. You need to add that if someone wants to recall Newsom, then they should vote Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | August 26, 2021 6:10 AM |
I do not want this recall. I do not want to take a chance on any of these crazy on that list. I want Sane and Responsible Gavin Newsom.
I am voting NO on the first question. I urge you all to do the same. I do not want California to descend into a Covid Hellscape.

by Anonymous | reply 237 | August 26, 2021 3:25 PM |
r229, it may not be possible. I know diehard democrats that hate Newsom. They own property and the eviction ban and homeless stuff has pissed them off. He may be recalled and if you don't vote for no. 2 we will be stuck with Larry Elder, who isn't qualified and is also a insincere profiteer who will say anything for money. He has no beliefs, fake Trumpist and just goes where he needs to so he can be that paid black friend.
Listen I get that Newsom is better than all those smucks running and the idea of someone being governor who gets <20% of the electorate but if we don't have him and he gets impeached it MUST be a democrat. Districts are being redrawn and Feinstein is the new Bader Ginsberg. It's not all about him and keeping him in power. He is down after 2022 anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | August 26, 2021 4:30 PM |
r232, but what of his replacement. Just wanting to recall him isn't smart if the alternative is worse. Who is the better alternative.
If you don't like Newsom, support and back a primary challenger for the '22 election.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | August 26, 2021 4:32 PM |
R229, by definition, if one or more people listed as choices for #2 are registered Democrats, they're Democrats. They might not be cooperative, compliant members of the Democratic Party's inner circle, but that doesn't mean they're likely to turn around and appoint a Republican to replace Feinstein if she dies in the next year (which is the single most important reason to vote against Faulconer for #2, even if he's otherwise palatable).
This isn't the time for Democrats to descend into Republican tactics & start calling everyone DINOs. The Democrats in #2 aren't PREFERABLE to Newsom, but they're still preferable to any Republican if Newsom loses #1.
Democrats are supposed to be educated, high-information voters capable of critical thought, not Deplorables bleating simple slogans like sheep. In the Bay Area, a message like "leave #2 blank" goes down like a lead balloon & ANTAGONIZES Newsom's base.

"We will be freer," said Ketendjian, 59, a workers compensation attorney, who is counting on Newsom's replacement to immediately repeal the mask and vaccine mandates that he and the others believe have strangled the economy and suffocated individual rights.
"I'm going to wake my kids up at 6 o'clock in the morning and I'm going to tell ’em, 'Get ready for school, girls, you're going without a mask!'" said Sean Soares, 40, who has pulled his two teenage daughters from class rather than comply with the COVID-19 coverup required by the local school board.
