Florida Again: Toddler Shoots and Kills Mother on Zoom Call
I did a search and didn't find a thread. ---------------------------------------------------- A toddler in Florida fatally shot a woman during a video call after finding an unsecured handgun, police said Thursday.
Someone on the work-related Zoom conference called 911 and reported that they had seen a toddler and heard a noise before the woman, Shamaya Lynn, fell backward, police said in a statement.
Lynn, 21, was killed Wednesday in Altamonte Springs, near Orlando.
"Investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment," Altamonte Springs police said in a statement. Police said Lynn was shot in the head.
The police statement did not identify the relationship, but NBC affiliate WESH of Orlando reported that police said she was the toddler's mother.
Investigators said the handgun belonged to the father of the victim's two young children, the station reported. Neither child was injured.
"If you own a firearm, please keep it locked and secured," Police Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. said. "Incidents like this could be avoided."
There were at least 369 unintentional shootings by children younger than 18 last year, with 142 deaths, according to the gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, which tracks reports.

I never understand stories/people like this. I grew up going to many, many redneck homes filled with firearms. The guns were always secured, especially when children were around.

Well. That Zoom meeting sure ended with a bang.

I mean...no words; every day there's some story that blows my mind.
I never had kids. Too much responsibility
Some day this child will learn he/she killed their own mother.
That'll fuck him/her up.

What are the chances a toddler has the strength to not only pull the trigger but hit her right in the head?

That was no accident. The toddler knew what it was doing.

My father had a handgun in his night stand drawer until the day he died. We grew up knowing it was in there, and we also knew if we touched it our ass would be grass. He also taught us how to handle guns at a pretty young age,so we always knew they werent a toy. Maybe its a southern thing.

[quote]Investigators say the handgun belonged to the father of the victim's two young children. An investigation is ongoing as detectives work with the Seminole County State Attorney's Office concerning if any charges will be filed against the dad.
It's Florida, there will no charges, the father will plead the kid was standing their ground.

This reminded me of the toddler who was sitting in the backseat of a car, found a gun under the front seat and accidentally shot his mother. When I did a search I discovered at least four different articles matching this description.

I did too, until the 1990s. I absolutely remember when multiple families I knew who had gun safes and locking gun cabinets started buying these open-air display cases with maybe a plexiglass door on them, using them to hold a dozen semi-automatics they got at gun shows along with their Rush Limbaugh and 2nd Amendment bumper stickers.
There's something about modern gun culture that makes people very cavalier about gun safety.

I'm the youngest of four. When I was 2 or 3, I was playing in my parents' bedroom closet, and waayyyy to the far back I found a shotgun. Or rifle, don't recall which. I ran and told my two sisters about it. About two seconds after that I saw my parents huddling in the kitchen, with Mama uncharacteristically animated. Dad told us kids to go play outside. We did.
We never saw that gun again.

My Dad was the same way R9. He had rifles for hunting in the garage, and a handgun which he kept in a lockbox under the bed (which I doubt was actually locked but I don’t know).
Had he seen me touch any of them I would have been in for a severe beating (which I know is out of style but sometimes … it works). Once I was a teenager, I’m sure he would have taken me out for lessons, but I just wasn’t interested (my older brother was and he took him).
