Jennifer Lopez deserved a Grammy for her “This Is Me…Then” (2002) album
I just listened to the entire album for the first time in years, and many of the songs are masterful and the album stays on theme. And let me be clear, I liked a few of her songs from her first album (mostly Waiting For Tonight) but hated her sophomore album, I don’t care hot big it was. Her third album, this one, was a surprise to me.
Of course, this is not the first and only album to be 100% about love and being who you are, but it also has a very specific sound that it holds onto throughout the album. It has “a sound” as a whole, and it’s good.
From the opening song “Still”, to her song “Dear Ben”, it’s heartfelt and emotional and honest. I absolutely love “Again”. It’s a bit sappy in lyrics, but oh so honest and I love the piano-bridge that takes place during the song. It’s beautiful.
I don’t know how this album was overlooked. It’s one of the better pop albums from 2002.

Her album AKA was actually really, really good. She was going back to her hip-hop roots. Her song "Worry No More" was excellent r&b with weird subliminal vocals.

r4 I really like that album, but she just threw a bunch of themes on a wall in the hopes of another "On The Floor" which I always thought to be overhyped. OTF needed a stronger beat in my opinion.
The "This Is Me...Then" album was boring, but she has never looked better then she did on that cover. Like a latina Britney Spears.

She doesn't contribute to any of her music. She basically lets talented producers and backup singers (with whole choruses) do everything and she just talks her vocals over the finished product. I don't like how the Grammys are just easily given away nowadays. I know it's always been about popularity but giving it to pop artists who do nothing creatively (don't write, don't play instruments, don't produce, can't sing) is a joke.
Jlo is a good entertainer but she got awards for MTV Video Vanguard (she has no groundbreaking videos) and an Icon Award (how is she iconic?). Madonna, Janet, Beyonce and Britney have more iconic videos and moments. The only iconic thing JLo did is that green Versace dress.

Jenny from the Block was so laughable. People from the Bronx will let you know Jenny ain't hood and she never gave anything back. Her family strikes me as whitewashed Puerto Ricans. She didn't even grow up speaking Spanish like many in her generation. Rosie Perez exposed her ass. She only fucked with Keenan Wayans and Puffy for her career.

I really would not mind her at all if I didn't hear so many stories about her being such an awful, nasty person and bully. She is reportedly very rude to people she sees as "below her" like restaurant staff and film crews. She will tell them not to look her in the eyes and purposely made messes to get them to clean it up. Rosie Perez who hired her for In Living Color, even said none of the other Fly Girls liked JLo for her manipulative and bitchy behavior. She even shows her attitude herself. She had an interview back when Selena was released where she was bashing Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and others for being untalented. Then she name drops Rosie Perez in a very recent interview, saying she avoided the stereotypical roles that Rosie got (ironic as Rosie never played maids and strippers like JLo has).
She is also a troll, she will post "All Lives Matter", "Bronx Girl Magic" and call herself "Negrita from the Bronx". She knows that pisses off Black people but Afro-Latinos have been calling her nonsense.

Latinos are Latinos. Stop trying to segregate them in the states. They’ve always lived amongst each other in the states.

[quote] Latinos are Latinos. Stop trying to segregate them in the states. They’ve always lived amongst each other in the states.
Latino is a term that was coined by the French to form a hypothetical empire of Caribbean, Central and South America based on the fact they all spoke Romance languages. Latino is a not race.
A lot of White (European) and Light-skinned (mixed race) Latinos do look down on Brown (Indigenous) and Black (African) Latinos. Latin America was founded on genocide and colonization and there is hierarchy based on skin color. White European features are associated with wealth and you see models and actors of mostly European extraction in Latin American media. Puerto Rico and Cuba both literally whitened up their populations to outbred the Black slave and freed mixed race population by encouraging Europeans to immigrate there in the late 19th century. As opposed to the British colonizers who banned interracial sex and marriage and preferred to just kill or expel Natives. The Spanish, Portuguese and French preferred to intermarry in order to create a population that could be assimilated into European culture and supremacy. It didn't fully work as Caribbean countries and Brazil are both heavily African influenced in music, food, dance and clothing but the racism and colorism is still there. Jennifer Lopez is mostly of European descent (she's actually pale as snow without sunless tanner) just like many Puerto Ricans and she probably have a grandparent who is Black. But that doesn't mean she isn't colorist and doesn't look down on Black and darker-skinned Puerto Ricans. Puerto Ricans did live in or near African-American neighborhoods but not by their choice but by Jim Crow era housing segregation and One-Drop Rule which dictated they were Black too. Some definitely embrace Black culture like Rosie Perez (though she's visibly Afro-Puerto Rican too) and Fat Joe who also will say Puerto Ricans are a tri-racial group (white, black and Taíno). But some like Jennifer Lopez would be more than happy to be seen as "white" and accepted into the white upper class circles. There are also Black Puerto Ricans who would be indistinguishable from Jamaicans and Dominicans but you never see them properly represented because most of them just blend into African-American culture like Meagan Good, Rosario Dawson and Lala Anthony.
Cubans in Miami are mostly to completely Spanish European because they descended from the wealthy landowners who fled Cuba when Castro took over. They are very racist to Black people in Miami actually and I'm sure they may treat Black Cubans a bit better but still have a sense of superiority.

Again, in the USA USA USA (let me say it 3 times so maybe the make-believe highly educated men on here understand) Latinos of all colors have lived in specific areas with each other. “White” Latinos were not considered white 50 years ago unless they changed their last names and made sure to not speak Spanish, no accent etc.
The lie I see on here about Desi Arnaz is a lie. “He never faced racism or prejudice because he’s white”. Not true and not how it works.

R28 OK and the White and light-skinned Latinos were still racist to darker-skinned Latinos and Black Latinos just like the Irish and Italians were racist towards African-Americans. There is serious colorism and anti-Blackness in the Latino community that needs to be addressed.

It's the samples of masterful R&B songs from the 60s and 70s that give this album its seemingly (to those with challenged taste) "masterful" veneer. Take those away and these songs barely exist.

R28
Upper-class white Cubans like Desi Arnaz got on fine. Cuba had big pure white population of landowners and it was an American territory. Desi had no Indigenous or African features at all, if he did then he would not have had any type of career especially back then. Same with Rita Hayworth or Ramon Navarro, they looked like regular Europeans. Rudolph Valentino, Sal Mineo and Frank Sinatra were Sicilian looking and they did just fine. As long as you didn't look BLACK or INDIGENOUS, you got on fine. A lot of Hollywood male actors were very tanned skin actually.
Puerto Ricans and Dominicans were harshly affected by Jim Crow. Because they had far more Black and Indigenous blood and visible Black or Indigenous features and America was based on anti-Blackness, anti-Indigenous and one-Drop rule. Most of PR and DR immigrants were either working class or middle class. That's also a big reason why Mexicans face a lot of backlash, most of them who come to the States are the working class from Southern Mexico and have heavy Indigenous features. If they looked like the 6-foot tall, blonde, blue-eyed film and TV actors from Mexico they would get a different reaction.

R40 I can agree that she's a decent actress. I don't mind seeing her in movies or TV shows. She showed strength in Out of Sight, Selena, Anaconda, The Cell and Enough. But her attempts at singing is something she could really do without, her tone is not very pleasant. She definitely improved enough to sing live nowadays with a vocal coach. She can dance but is better in a dance group or as a carnival diva.

She'd be stupid to not try to start a franchise for "The Cell." A pot smoking psychologist who does freaky deep dives into the minds of criminals seems kind of evergreen and would get butts in seats for Imax. The director was amazong. A prestige horror franchise would be good for her.

The reason why she's crying is not because her talent hasn't been recognized. She is crying because probably no one knows better that ALL the awards are extremely political and are bought and paid for with money and power exchanges. And NO ONE in my opinion has played the game harder, whored herself out to the industry to get ahead more and is a constant source of income for tabloids than Jennifer Lopez. She has made money for every area of the entertainment industry through constant promotion of herself as a brand with both positive softball pieces and negative personal stories. So that is why she feels she deserves it all. And in a way, given the game, she should.

I mean while Gwenyth Paltrow is accepting Oscars without ever having to admit she took Harvey's yellow jizz all over her face and tits, everyone knows JLo is getting stretched out by the Wayan Brothers and literally riding shotgun for PDiddy, running red lights and getting chased by the cops. And at 50 she still is tight as a drum, hanging from stripper poles at the Super Bowl and dancing for her life and career.

JLo will not get a Grammy unless she's a featured artist on either a Latin song or an EDM song (as in, she needs to have a threesome with David Geutta, Ben, and heself to get a spot on one of his songs and then do a stripping pole routine in the video)
Music industry people hate JLo. She had Ashanti, Wynter Gordon, and Christina Milian sjng most of the choruses to the songs...she's considered a cop-out, a fake, a phony. Her vocal tone is not that bad, but she is lazy. Even Britney was slaving away in the studio doing vocal takes to create 100 layers of vocals that were Melodyne'd into a melody.

Excellent businesswoman / self promoter / whore. Great dancer, passable actress (I liked the movie Blood & Wine - she held her own opposite Jack Nicholson, Judy Davis and Michael Caine). But not a great singer or musician at all. I grew up with her early radio songs when I was a kid and she does have a nice catalogue of catchy urban hits that defined the era (If You Had My Love, Ain't it Funny, Waiting for Tonight, Let's Get Loud, All I Have, Love Don't Cost a Thing, Get Right, Jenny From the Block, Do It Well).
My sister had the CD that OP mentions when we were kids, and I regret to admit but it was very well put together and packaged. Had a cosy, wintery NYC vibe that she smartly promoted in the music videos. Nice tasteful production with a good mix of live instruments and street beats (she used Mary J Blige's producers and you can tell). The background vocals were lush and sweet, the whole sound is very girlish and soft. I can remember my sister listening to it on her walkman wearing a pink velour sweat suit (lol). J. Lo probably had very little to do with its creation, but it's not bad. Still wouldn't give it a Grammy, there were too many good neo soul albums out at the time.
