HELP with recent novel

I read A LOT, and unfortunately since I read fast I tend to forget certain characters or plot points. Within the last month or so I read a novel that had a minor character that was a woman with a young, nonverbal, possibly autistic child, who had a habit of pulling on her mother's earlobe. The mother, while not overtly abusive, called the child derogatory names like "Dummy".

I have gone over my recent borrow list from the library but nothing is ringing a bell - I thought it might be from Lisa Taddeo's ANIMAL but can't find anything to confirm. I need to train myself to read slower!!!

This is driving me crazy- help me, DL, you're my only hope!
