COVID IS IN THE HEARTLAND NOW - Covid fatigue and rural complacency

Last year, I thought Covid would immediately jump from cities to rural areas. It made sense, the US is riddled with roads, rest stops, motels of dubious cleanliness right off the exit, countless fast food establishments advertising miles ahead, areas weighing and servicing trucks. But, I was wrong, Covid was simply not contagious enough to infect victims in the relatively short time stays people left their cars while on the road. Moreover, we now know touch contact doesn't present much of a danger.

SARS-COVID-19 mutated into the delta variant, whose enhanced contagiousness allowed it to travel the roadways with improved lethality. Below is a map of the areas most deeply hit - basically the deep south, + FL. There is also anecdotal evidence hospitals are close to collapse in Kansas and other nearby states. In Nevada, the casinos have masks for employees, but not customers. Other mask mandates are being implemented and NFL states---if don't have enough players free of Covid, you forfeit the game.

With our polarization, I wonder if SARS-COVID-19 eventually mutates to measles-level contagiousness.

Get vaxxed, get boosters, double mask if necessary.

So...in a "too little, too late" the Republicans are screaming "Get vaccinated." Maybe that will work.

Highest rate of COVID hospitalizations in the country this week is in:

Joplin, Missouri

Every 1 in 1,000 residents of Joplin currently has COVID. Hospitals are swamped.

by Anonymousreply 6July 22, 2021 11:51 PM

Why are we freaking out about this? It's simply a more contagious form of the coronavirus. People have died. People have become very sick and recovered. People have had mild symptoms and recovered. People have had no symptoms... and recovered.

Flus kill tens of thousands EVERY year, mostly old people. This is just a really bad one.

As for the so-called long-haulers: I think it's just the new "fibromyalgia".

All we were ever going to achieve was a slowed-down herd immunity anyway. It's happening. All you can do is get vaccinated and wear a mask and avoid close contact.

by Anonymousreply 7July 22, 2021 11:52 PM

r1 - you deserve an old-fashioned WW.

r4 - hope you are not surprised, in a bad way.

by Anonymousreply 8July 22, 2021 11:52 PM

It’s neither complacency or inaction.

It’s willful ignorance.

This bitch has no tears to shed.

That's not misinformation. First, the Delta variant is more contagious than the "Original Covid," second the entire post is written from an opinion standpoint. It's my thought on what is happening, I even mention I was wrong in my first assessment.

But, hey, keep parsing -

by Anonymousreply 15July 23, 2021 5:58 PM

it is perfectly ok for dullards to get delta and die a horrible death...........if they are too dull to recognize the value of vaccines, then they do not need to be reproducing and voting anyway.........

by Anonymousreply 16July 23, 2021 6:00 PM

r16 - problem most of the dead have already reproduced. Many even have grandchildren!

by Anonymousreply 17July 23, 2021 11:41 PM

The fall is going to be epically bad in areas where hospitals beds are already at capacity. Kay Ivey is seeing the projected models and it’s going to be a hard landing in AL, AR, MO. says it all and not much can be done at this point IMHO This map from @axios @ipsosus

r7 you had better hope you never get it to see if you are right. The fact that all the foods I loved taste disgusting now and some foods I can't taste at all and the fact that no matter what the hell I am doing I go thru spurts where I have to sit down every 5 minutes to rest because I have such exhaustion should get better now that I know you think this is just in our head.

35,000 died from flu in the US in 2019. In the last 15 or 16 months over 600,000 have died from Covid. Yep, just like the flu.

by Anonymousreply 30July 24, 2021 7:53 PM

R7 You're such an asshole.

What a flippant, callous attitude towards those who experience the misfortune of a symptomatic Covid-19 infection, and what utter contempt to have for the long-haulers by comparing their affliction to Fibromyalgia. Covid is not the flu, and it isn't some imaginary lingering condition. It is much, much worse. The lucky ones are the ones who get the "flu-like" symptoms and go back to normal lives.

If you ever become seriously ill from this global plague of sorts, I'm sure you'd be first in line expecting top-notch care and attention, all the while backtracking on your willful ignorance on how wrong you were.

by Anonymousreply 31July 24, 2021 8:26 PM

[quote]As for the so-called long-haulers: I think it's just the new "fibromyalgia".

Well, it's not just affecting middle-age fraus. Two 50something guys in my neighborhood are pretty much disabled six months after their infection.

[quote] SARS-COVID-19.

Huh?

The virus is SARS-CoV-2. The disease it causes is COVID-19.

by Anonymousreply 37July 24, 2021 10:29 PM

The problem is - nobody cares until there are deaths. Hospitalizations doesn't scare people enough, despite what we know about potential long term effects.

With the improvement in how to treat COVID and the younger ages of people getting it, we're most likely not going to see the same amount of deaths to change people's behavior.

So, like usual, we will set off all the alarms about the upcoming storm and people will say - what storm? I don't see any clouds - we're going to just stay put. It probably won't reach here, just like last time.

by Anonymousreply 38July 24, 2021 10:48 PM

r38 Maybe the hospital bills should scare them, but Americans don't think that far ahead. The COVID vaccine is free but the treatment for COVID isn't.

by Anonymousreply 39July 24, 2021 11:17 PM

R39 - actually, I think the COVID bills are still being picked up by the government. Most of it, at least. Maybe that changed, but I thought the COVID relief bill from 2020 was still in effect.

by Anonymousreply 40July 24, 2021 11:22 PM

Nothing like a side of Covid with the Corn Dogs!

by Anonymousreply 41July 24, 2021 11:24 PM

I actually take care of Covid patients(ECMO). At my hospital right now: 99% admits are the unvaccinated with Delta. Many many on Ventilators. We are swamped. Just reopened two of our Covid ICUs. Really short on staff. And were tired.

All of this could have been prevented if people had gotten vaccinated. In my state not even 50% are vaccinated(Louisiana). Just lost an ECMO patient that was unvaccinated and 19 years old. Now just put a patient on ECMO that is 22. Younger and younger. Long term Covid is real. Our ER sees daily post Covid with heart, lungs and kidney issues. Covid IS NOT THE FLU!!!!! It is horrible. I've seen a patient be admitted to Covid ICU on a nasal cannula and 12 hrs later on a ventilator. And then when I come back to work that patient has died. That fast. I took care of HIV patients and H1N1 patients and SARS. Covid is so much worse.

Please wear a mask.

by Anonymousreply 42July 24, 2021 11:45 PM

R42 - so are you starting to see the same death rates as before or fewer but faster?

by Anonymousreply 43July 24, 2021 11:50 PM

The article's use of the word "complacency" is off the mark. Try "willful ignorance," "denial," "aggressive defensiveness," or "active resistance," instead.

by Anonymousreply 44July 25, 2021 12:00 AM

(43) Not as bad as the first wave last year. Since this is the fourth wave we are hoping it won't be as bad as the first. We are worried. Yes people are dying more quickly. Unvaccinated. Vaccinated so far no deaths.

by Anonymousreply 45July 25, 2021 12:00 AM

Josh Marshall @joshtpm · 4h I think Brian really gets it here. Most of the adult population is vaccinated. Those people are starting to see that we're now going backwards because a big minority is refusing. People are getting pissed. That's what's driving the GOP switcheroo.

Stetler is right at r46: this is the turning point in the pandemic, where the vaccinated got fed up with the unvaccinated and the problems they're causing. We'll never get COVID under control while they play roulette with themselves and subsequently, the rest of us.

They're not only causing physical harm (by acting as vectors and continuing to circulate the virus and its variants); they are causing social, economic and fiscal harm to the country. I'm sick of having to wear a mask in public spaces myself, and being too fearful to go to the movies or a concert. The unvaccinated are holding the rest of us back.

They are straining our healthcare systems as well, and the hospital ward are again filling with sick COVID patients who will ring up care bills in the hundreds of millions that will require assistance to be paid. It sounds extreme, but don't be shocked if at some point a large number of vaxxed folks begin calling for "die at home" measures for the unvaxxed.

You want to get sick, you deal with it, alone and/or with your unvaxxed brethren.
