What should I play when I want to feel like I'm in the olden days preparing for guests to arrive for a dinner party?
Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy) - Jimmy Dorsey.

You can't go wrong with Connie Francis on a record player.

I will turn OP on to a wonderful, vintage jazz anthology set since I know it won't become a popular thread when the Copycat Thread Thief rips off the idea for a whole, new thread about it.
An epic anthology of classy cocktail party numbers from the '50s and '60s called ULTRA LOUNGE by Capitol Records. There are like 30 albums, so all you need is a playlist of any volume on Youtube and you'll have HOURS of kitschy, cool tunes. Some is instrumental; some have lyrics.
But it's a completely transportative throwback to hipper, classier era:

I have two of ULTRA LOUNGE's "best of" volumes. They were in crushed velvet, leopard skin boxes!
One was the Tiki Sampler, which I highly recommend:

ULTRA LOUNGE has some classic jazz crooners like Dean Martin:

And I love the smooth, campy number, "Teach Me Tiger" lol

The Italians had some nice lounge music in the 60s.

OP, Sinatra hated Strangers. He thought it was about two “fags” getting together.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 22, 2021 8:31 PM |
That kind of makes me love it more!

R24 I LOVE that song.

Well, if you're going to do a Sinatra song, you might as well another Italian American singer from that era . . .

Make Someone Happy, another from the Doris Day collection.

"Guess Who I Saw Today" by Miss Nancy Wilson. A song "stylist" in the good sense.

I long imagined having a classy cocktail party with songs like the above and this:

J'adore Miss Nancy.

Before Jack won the Presidency, we preferred only instrumental pieces at our little soirees in Georgetown. Of course, this was before I was on Assistance.
