The situation reminds me of the Rita Moreno episode where the comedy relief suffered from serious mental illness until his character was polished into Joe Isuzu when repackaged for Empty Nest.
On the Golden Girls, was Sophia's brain damage from a stroke canon past the series premiere?

No, it was just mentioned in the series's pilot to justify, what then would have been, "shocking" comments.

I think that tends to be one of Susan Harris’s signatures. She likes to have a character who says outrageous jokes but needs to excuse it somehow. In Soap, that role is filled by a dummy, Bob.
However, why did you think this was a good idea for a thread, OP? DL is not your diary, we don’t need to hear all of your thoughts. This is a discussion board. You think this topic will spur an engaging conversation?

It is mentioned in passing one more time, I believe, when she says something outrageous and Dorothy Says something along the lines of “ Please excuse my mother she had a stroke which left her if I may be blunt a total burden”. It sort of was a throw back line.
