Do you live in a major city?

Do what you do best and take my poll...

by Anonymousreply 118July 21, 2021 11:27 AM

Am I missing something? In all my years of DL I've never been able to "click to vote". Anyway, Houston here.

by Anonymousreply 1July 18, 2021 6:21 PM

You do realise that there are many non-Americans here right?

by Anonymousreply 2July 18, 2021 6:32 PM

r2, OP did include Texas so yes, the non-Americans who matter are represented.

by Anonymousreply 3July 18, 2021 6:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 4July 18, 2021 6:39 PM

LOL... how telling... no major cities anywhere else in the world.

^ Phoenix is a major city to you?

Ok.

by Anonymousreply 10July 18, 2021 6:52 PM

Why should the OP have written " New York" instead of "Manhattan"? Anyone with any intelligence knows that Manhattan IS New York.

by Anonymousreply 11July 18, 2021 6:54 PM

Manhattan is the PHOENIX of New York!

by Anonymousreply 12July 18, 2021 6:56 PM

[quote]Phoenix is a major city to you?

It's top 10 in population.

by Anonymousreply 13July 18, 2021 6:57 PM

I don't see Boston.

by Anonymousreply 14July 18, 2021 6:57 PM

Well, that makes it a big city, but really a little critical thought and you'd struggle to classify Phoenix as a major city while excluding the rest of the world. However, it's evident where your world stops and starts so let's consider the case closed.

by Anonymousreply 15July 18, 2021 6:59 PM

This is a terrible poll.

Just sayin'.

by Anonymousreply 17July 18, 2021 7:01 PM

OP, you should have included Albuquerque on principle.

by Anonymousreply 18July 18, 2021 7:03 PM

Phoenix is not a major city.

by Anonymousreply 19July 18, 2021 7:03 PM

Then what about Butte?

by Anonymousreply 28July 18, 2021 7:41 PM

Chicago, Phoenix, Houston, and Dallas are not major cities (based on location alone)

↑ Now we have a retarded Tourette's Troll posting random exclamatory inanities? Oy!

by Anonymousreply 31July 18, 2021 8:12 PM

OP could have put Atlanta, Miami or Boston but he went with PHOENIX.

by Anonymousreply 32July 18, 2021 8:14 PM

San Francisco proper or the San Francisco Bay Area?

by Anonymousreply 33July 18, 2021 8:22 PM

When one talks about a city one should talk about the metropolitan area, not just the city proper. Phoenix is #10, so technically I guess it could be considered a major city.

The 10 largest metro areas are

1 New York City-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA MSA 19,124,359

2 Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA MSA 13,109,903

3 Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI MSA 9,406,638

4 Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX MSA 7,694,138

5 Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX MSA 7,154,478

6 Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV MSA 6,324,629

7 Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL MSA 6,173,008

8 Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD MSA 6,107,906

9 Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta, GA MSA 6,087,762

10 Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler, AZ MSA 5,059,909

by Anonymousreply 34July 18, 2021 8:26 PM

How is Chicago not a major city r29?

by Anonymousreply 35July 18, 2021 8:35 PM

Depends on the source R34.

The 10 Biggest U.S. Metropolitan Areas from Largest to Smallest, 2018 Census

1. New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA 23,522,861

2. Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA 18,764,814

3. Chicago-Naperville, IL-IN-WI 9,865,674

4. Washington-Baltimore-Arlington, DC-MD-VA-WV-PA 9,800,391

5. San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA 8,841,475

6. Boston-Worcester-Providence, MA-RI-NH-CT 8,285,407

7. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX-OK 7,994,963

8. Philadelphia-Reading-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD 7,204,035

9. Houston-The Woodlands, TX 7,195,656

10. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Port St. Lucie, FL 6,881,420

by Anonymousreply 36July 18, 2021 8:37 PM

Those figures include areas that most metro surveys don't consider close enough to the core city to be in the metros.

by Anonymousreply 37July 18, 2021 8:54 PM

Yeah Chicago is unquestionably a major city r29.

by Anonymousreply 38July 18, 2021 8:57 PM

Detroit!

by Anonymousreply 39July 18, 2021 8:57 PM

Yes! Seattle.

by Anonymousreply 40July 18, 2021 8:59 PM

Baltimore? Seattle? The Twin Cities? Kansas City? St. Louis? New Orleans? Pittsburgh? Milwaukee? Memphis? Denver? Portland? Miami?

by Anonymousreply 41July 18, 2021 9:00 PM

These major cities are tearing us apart!

by Anonymousreply 42July 18, 2021 9:06 PM

R35 It is. I was just being snotty because it's in the middle of the country.

Sorry. I'm strongly biased toward the Northeast and California.

by Anonymousreply 43July 18, 2021 9:08 PM

The largest city by population using the city proper definition, which is the area under the administrative boundaries of a local government, is Chongqing, China.

The largest city by population using the metropolitan area definition, which is a loose term referring to urban area and its primary commuter areas, is Tokyo, Japan.

The largest city by population using the urban area definition, which is a loose term referring to a contiguous area with a certain population density, is also Tokyo, Japan.

The largest city by population using the dumb MAGAT definition, which is a loose term referring to a contiguous area of retarded hicks who worship the Orange Jizzpot, is Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

by Anonymousreply 44July 18, 2021 9:09 PM

I have a feeling that on a per capita basis OP penned the most unsuccessful thread of the day.

by Anonymousreply 45July 18, 2021 9:12 PM

Use MSA, not CSA, which is overly expansive. R34 should have been the poll.

by Anonymousreply 46July 18, 2021 9:17 PM

I live in London. I wish I lived in a major city like Phoenix so I could take part in this fun poll!

by Anonymousreply 47July 18, 2021 9:33 PM

I'm baffled by what OP was trying to prove with this poll, since there was no option for "I do not live in any of the cities listed above," which at least would have told us how many DLers lived in those cities versus elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 48July 18, 2021 9:36 PM

Only two of the world's top ten largest cities are located in the Western Hemisphere: São Paulo (4th) and Mexico City (5th).

NYC ranks 11th. The next largest American city, Los Angeles, ranks 23rd.

by Anonymousreply 49July 18, 2021 9:41 PM

^ London is ranked 37th.

Phoenix doesn't break the top 80.

by Anonymousreply 50July 18, 2021 9:43 PM

New Orleans wasn't a major city before they lost over half their population due to the hurricane. The population is back up to 75% of what it was before the storm.

by Anonymousreply 51July 18, 2021 9:49 PM

[quote] Only two of the world's top ten largest cities are located in the Western Hemisphere: São Paulo (4th) and Mexico City (5th).

So, you're saying OP should do this poll again but with the 10 choices instead being Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, Sao Paolo, Mexico City, Cairo, Mumbai, Beijing, Dhaka, and Osaka?

Sounds super-fun! I've always wanted to hear from all our gay sisters in Dhaka and Osaka.

[quote] Manhattan is a burrough

Oh, my!

by Anonymousreply 55July 18, 2021 10:21 PM

This all reminds me of a conversation I heard on the last night of my vacation to Vienna, Austira, my favorite city, in 2019. There I was, enjoying a coffee and desert at an outdoor cafe, and I heard the following conversation:

"Well, there are the large U.S. cities, and then there are your major metropolitan centers, like Duluth."

There we all were, sitting outside at a beautiful cafe in the inner city of Vienna with a backlighted view of the Albertina museum, and these rubes are talking about Duluth! Two years later, that story still makes me laugh.

by Anonymousreply 56July 18, 2021 10:55 PM

I'm "Oh, dear"-ing myself for the typo- it's obviously "dessert!" Hee...

by Anonymousreply 57July 18, 2021 10:57 PM

I'll have you know Duluth is considered the Vienna of Northeast Minnesota.

[quote]I'm baffled by what OP was trying to prove with this poll

Plainly her trailer landed in St. Louis after the twister hit Wichita.

by Anonymousreply 59July 18, 2021 11:07 PM

Now that we've thoroughly destroyed the OP's self esteem, I'm a little shocked that LA and NYC (oops: Manhattan) are tied.

In past threads like these, NYC is usually far and away in first.

Does this mean that LA has finally supplanted NYC/Manhattan as THE American city?

I'd like to know what Phoenix thinks of this new development. But not London. London has no right to respond.

by Anonymousreply 60July 18, 2021 11:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 63July 18, 2021 11:28 PM

Phoenix (city alone) has 1.7 million living there, about 5 million in its metro area. They have a professional baseball team, a pro football team, a pro basketball team and a pro hockey team. It's one of the few cities that have all four professional sports franchises. Big shot team owners agree Phoenix is a major city. Why can't we?

by Anonymousreply 64July 18, 2021 11:31 PM

Well, I live in Seattle which is the home base for Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks, Costco, T-Mobile and Nordstroms so I think we're a lot more major than half the cities on your awful list.

I mean, what is Phoenix known for other than heat, old people, and backward politics?

by Anonymousreply 65July 18, 2021 11:33 PM

R64, Phoenix clearly owes these cunts money.

I've found something to like about every "major" US city I've visited...except Phoenix. Didn't like it at all. I went there for work, and I hope I never have to go there again.

Of the cities I've visited for work, Boston is the one I'd most like to return to for a vacation. I really enjoyed it.
