This too shall end in tears.....A Week Before The Opening Ceremony, Coronavirus Turns Up At Tokyo's Olympic Village

One week before the top global sporting event kicks off, the first person has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Olympic Village in Tokyo, as more than 11,000 athletes, plus an estimated 79,000 journalists, officials and staff are slated to gather in Japan during the ongoing pandemic.

So far, 44 people affiliated with the Games have tested positive since the beginning of July, most of them contractors.

Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto announced at a news conference Saturday that the latest infection was detected during PCR screening conducted a day earlier and the person is now quarantined for 14 days at a hotel.

The identity and nationality were not revealed, but Muto said the infected person comes from overseas.

The individual is listed as "games-concerned personnel" in the running tally of infections organizers are tracking. Athletes are a separate category.

On Friday, a member of the Nigerian delegation became the first visitor to be hospitalized with COVID-19.

This includes officials, athletes, journalists, coaches, family members, food service workers, vendors. Anyone and everyone.

You all are forgetting this was not just a Japanese decision. The IOC could've easily mandated a(nother) cancellation or postponement of the Games, and--as I've said in several other threads on this same subject--the IOC refused to do it because money. Billions and billions of dollars worth of $$$ from sponsorships, airing rights, branding on apparel, etc. Kim Kardashian is supplying the undergarments for Team USA, for crying out loud! It's all about money, as the Olympics have been for the last 50 years or so.

by Anonymousreply 16July 17, 2021 3:39 PM

I’ve read that a lot of athletes are resistant to getting vaccinated, too. Bringing people from around the world together during a global pandemic seems like a really bad idea. Unfortunately, it’s going to be the countries in which effective vaccines are much more difficult to get that are going to face the most severe repercussions from this decision.

by Anonymousreply 19July 17, 2021 4:10 PM

FFS. This was so simple. All they had to do was this:

-If you want to attend the Olympics, you must be vaccinated.

-Athletes must be tested for the virus when they arrive and once a day as long as they stay.

-Athletes must stay in the Olympic Village.

That's it.

An alternate on the U.S. women's gymnastics team tested positive for the coronavirus just days before the Tokyo Olympics was set to begin, American Olympic officials said Monday.

The gymnast, who authorities did not publicly identify, tested positive while training for the games in Narita, about 35 miles east of Tokyo, according to city officials. She is between the age of 10 and 19. A statement from USA Gymnastics said the athlete tested positive on Sunday and she and another alternate member of the team were quarantined.

After arriving in Japan on Thursday, the gymnasts stayed in their travel accommodations and practiced in venues, but did not spend time in the city, according to the city. Another team member who was identified as a "close contact" of the gymnast has been placed "on standby."

All told, 25 new COVID cases were detected among athletes and other people associated with the Games over the weekend, according to Olympics organizers, but two South African soccer players, the country’s Olympic Committee confirmed Sunday, were the first two athletes inside the Olympic Village to test positive for the coronavirus. Olympics officials said that another athlete had tested positive Sunday, but outside the Olympic Village. On Saturday, officials announced the first case inside the isolated area, an Olympics organizer visiting from abroad. The Olympic Village, which is located on Tokyo Bay, will house some 11,000 people for the duration of the Games.

American tennis player Coco Gauff announced Sunday that she had tested positive for COVID and would not be able to play in the Games.

Two other members of South Africa’s Olympics contingent have also tested positive in Japan: a video analyst for the soccer team, who tested positive upon arrival in Tokyo, and the country’s head rugby-sevens coach, who is with that team training in another city in the country. All who test positive for COVID at the Olympics must go into isolation for 14 days. Contact tracing is being implemented, as well as are a host of safety measures and restrictions. The rest of South Africa’s soccer team quarantined Sunday while awaiting results of additional tests. Sunday also brought news that eight members of Team Great Britain in Yokohama, including six athletes, had been ordered to self-isolate because they had been in close contact with someone who tested positive on Friday. They will all need to test negative twice over 48 hours before being allowed to leave isolation and rejoin their teams. South Africa’s soccer team is scheduled to play Japan on Thursday.

News Alert: Dow sinks more than 700 points as Delta variant fears hit Wall Street hard

Investors are getting spooked by the rising numbers of Covid-19 cases as the Delta variant spreads across the globe.

The Dow fell about 725 points Monday, a drop of 2.1%. The S&P 500 ended the day down 1.6% and the Nasdaq was 1.1% lower. This was the worst day for the Dow since a 943-point drop in late October, and it was the biggest decline this year.

Investors feared that the Delta coronavirus variant could threaten the US economic recovery. Shares of companies in sectors that were widely thought to benefit most from the reopening of the economy were hit the hardest.

Who the hell knows, but if they already have a several athletes testing positive, and most of them haven't even arrived in Tokyo yet, doesn't just figure that there are going to be so many more Covid-positive when everyone is there living together?

I guess I was naive. I really thought Japan would have it together more than it does. The U.S. handled the pandemic horribly, but we had a fairly good vaccine rollout program (not counting these idiots who refuse to be vaccinated). But after understandably having to cancel the Olympics last year, I truly thought Japan would have most of its population vaccinated by now if for nothing else to save the Olympics. But Japan is still struggling in getting its own population vaccinated. Why? Does Japan have a bunch of deplorables and right-wing whackos watching Fox like we do here?

EU upset over swimcap rules:

EU politicians urge Olympics to lift 'exclusionary' ban on swim cap for natural Black hair

Exclusive by Luke McGee, CNN

Updated 6:31 AM EDT, Mon July 19, 2021

An anti-racist group of members of the European Parliament have accused the global sports community, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), of having "institutional structures and rules that exclude people of colour and Black women specifically."

In a letter to Thomas Bach and Sebastian Coe, presidents of the IOC and World Athletics, the Anti-Racism and Diversity Intergroup of the European Parliament said that the International Swimming Federation's (FINA) effective banning of the Soul Cap at international tournaments, including the Olympics, "reflects stigmatisation of Black hair and leads to institutional inequalities, especially targeting Black women."

Soul Cap, a UK-based brand, said that FINA refused to approve the swim caps designed for "thick, curly, and voluminous hair" because they do not "follow the natural form of the head," the company told the BBC.

R67. These athletes could have gotten vaccinated in April. No one is asking them to get a vaccinated 10 minutes before jumping in the pool. If there were countries that did not have access to the vaccines, perhaps these countries could have provided vaccines for these Olympic athletes alone a couple of months ago.

R76. Bob Costas is right. No vaccine--no admission into the Olympics. This is insane to allow unvaccinated athletes and personal into any Olympic venue or into the country at all for that matter.

I'm goin on a gay camping trip for a week in August. There will be 200-300 guys at the camp location. The rule is no vaccine, no admittance into the camp grounds. You must show up with your vaccination card, and you must have received the vaccination at least two weeks prior to the first day of the trip. No exceptions.

This should have been the rule with everyone related to the Olympics and to Japan in general. No vaccine, no admission. No exceptions.

The amount of money, prestige and hard work that will be in vane and lost with no fans in the stands and now with some athletes having their Olympic dream ruined because of mismanaged vaccination policy and foolish athletes is utterly irresponsible especially after almost a year-and-a-half of knowing the science.

by Anonymousreply 79July 20, 2021 12:31 AM

R75 - there was a thread about that 'bullshit' swim cap story. They just weren't approved - the swim caps are not designed for competition and the owners put this story out as 'racist' in order to boost their sales. And it did.

Black swimmers have been using approved swimcaps for decades with no issues. They would NEVER use those Soul Cap swim caps - they're an awful design and not made for competition - just leisurely lap swimming.

Esther Williams swim caps with plastic rosettes on the side are also not approved.

Many swimsuit fabrics, designs, goggles and other items are also not approved - it happens all the time.
