I’m shocked he agreed to do this. I remember he said he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if he accepted the role in Brokeback.
Maybe he has changed.

No, he hasn't.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 8, 2021 9:22 PM |
Well, he's playing the father, who's presumably straight.
He's not playing a gay character.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 8, 2021 9:22 PM |
He hasn't changed.
He's not playing a gay character, and the movie involves a murdered gay teen - something which he has to have zero empathy for to play a role. Maybe he even "likes" that story line.

R9, He was also good in "Fear".

by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 8, 2021 10:20 PM |
I finally watched The Departed recently and I thought he really overdid it - he was like a Southie PLAYING a Southie. If he'd just relaxed into it more it probably would've seemed less like he was acting all the time. I think he got the Oscar nom because he had the last shot in the film. The Departed was pretty impressive, Leo was great. It was like a really good B-side to Goodfellas.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 8, 2021 10:20 PM |
R17 The original is much better, in everyway.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 8, 2021 10:21 PM |
R17, r18 is correct. The original is called Infernal Affairs and is vastly superior.

I'll be pedantic and point out that Mark Wahlberg already earned his second Oscar nomination. It was for The Fighter as a producer, not as an actor.
And his performance in Infinite is bad enough that both nominations should be revoked.

He hasn’t given a great performance since.

R50 a lot of DLers think homophobia doesn’t exist. It’s still prevalent. It’s just lowkey now because of the internet and fear of backlash.

R51 : It doesn't exist if you work and live in the same super-liberal neighbourhood in a creative field surrounded by art/music related shit. That's it. Normal everyday environments are full of homophobes. If you live in a yaaaas qweeeen bubble where you think racism is somehow more prevalent than homophobia I guess /you just don't know any better because you've been spoiled/.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 9, 2021 9:39 AM |
R38. The victim may have forgiven Marky Mark but we don't and he attacked other non whites as well.
In fact, the courts refused to allow this vile creature to get his record expunged, given the serious nature of his crimes. He fancied himself becoming a reserve officer of LAPD. Not going to happen with a felony record.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 9, 2021 11:24 AM |
R42, I don't think it was delayed because of COVID. I just didn't gather any steam at Toronto and they realised that, without momentum, there was no Oscar campaign. That's all this film is - Oscar bait.
The son got good notices, the direction and screenplay are supposed to be terrible. And Wahlberg's involvement a total head scratcher.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 9, 2021 12:36 PM |

Once you notice the extreme nostril flares, you won’t be able to notice anything else.
Some actors act with their eyes, others act with their mouth, but only Marky Mark acts with his very large and expressive nostrils.

R76 Do some research lazy troll. There are multiple incidents going back to the 90s, and then there was the way he advised one of the actors in Brokeback Mountain to not do the film (or ever play a gay character). It aligns perfectly with his blatantly racist past.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 14, 2021 6:31 PM |
He hasn't changed. He has a recent number of flop films to his credit and he needs a hit. He's tired and self-serving. And that whispery whiny voice of his is a bone-killer. I will not be seeing this movie.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | August 9, 2021 3:17 AM |
I saw the movie and it was a lot better than the critics indicated.
Maybe Mark is atoning by taking this role; it is certainly a journey in more ways than one
by Anonymous | reply 93 | August 9, 2021 3:42 AM |
R93. Haven't you learned that journey has been a cliche for 10 years ? And is this Marky Mark asshole, who has grown uglier with each passing day, really an Oscar winner? If so, it proves how the award has diminished. Now let me recount a sunny summer day in Times Square in the 90s when I noticed a commotion on the other side of Bway. I crossed the street and Mark was already clocking me, and reached out his hand to greet me with a hey buddy greeting. Couldn't have been more friendly, or open. Yet I still hate him.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | August 9, 2021 4:19 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 95 | August 9, 2021 4:56 AM |

But it’s not a stretch to think that may apply to Mark as well
by Anonymous | reply 96 | August 9, 2021 4:57 AM |

I took a class in college that focused almost exclusively on Whitey Bulger and the Boston underground. I'm from the South and the things we read and watched the poor white people of Boston, from that time, say was more racist than anything I'd ever heard. Racially motivated crimes, especially by teenagers, were rampant especially from the 1970s-90s...the time in which he grew up. Also, he was on cocaine by the time he was 13...so we aren't talking about a typical teenager.
I'm willing to accept that his hate crimes were a result of his upbringing...and that now he has risen above his raising. I hope for his sake that is true.
