What Are DL's Top 10 Most Popular Movies?

The ones most often mentioned and most likely to quickly reach 100 replies whenever a thread is created. Here are my guesses: (in no particular order, but put them in order if you like)

Carrie

Brokeback Mountain

Ordinary People

Mommie Dearest

Valley of the Dolls

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

Showgirls

What's Up Doc

Call Me By Your Name

Dawson's Fifty Load Weekend

Honorable Mentions: The Poseidon Adventure, Muriel's Wedding

by Anonymousreply 75July 2, 2021 2:04 PM

No Marilyn or Anthony Hopkins movies?

by Anonymousreply 1June 24, 2021 8:23 AM

Mame, the old trolls loved Mame. They hate the new Mame, the one Lucy that is 40 years old.

by Anonymousreply 2June 24, 2021 8:36 AM

Don't forget perennial faves Rosemary's Baby, the Exorcist, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, and (to a much lesser extent) An Unmarried Woman.

by Anonymousreply 3June 24, 2021 8:38 AM

Mommie Dearest is the one I see mentioned most.

by Anonymousreply 4June 24, 2021 8:48 AM

Serial Mom

by Anonymousreply 5June 24, 2021 8:55 AM

The Silence of the Lambs is definitely in the top ten.

by Anonymousreply 6June 24, 2021 9:01 AM

Ahem...

Aren't you bitches forgetting something...???

by Anonymousreply 7June 24, 2021 9:06 AM

Weekend at Bernie's

Porky's Revenge

Encino Man

Octopussy

Ernest & Celestine

The Wedding Singer

The Sting

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Christine

by Anonymousreply 8June 24, 2021 9:11 AM

FUCK YOU OP!

by Anonymousreply 9June 24, 2021 9:16 AM

Female Trouble. How many times have cha-cha heels or the world of heterosexuals being a sick and boring life been mentioned here?

by Anonymousreply 10June 24, 2021 9:16 AM

OP here. Goodbar is a good one. Every six months it seems a new thread is created. As for Mame, the Lucille Ball version is far more popular than the Rosalind Russell Auntie Mame. We're not talking quality here, just popularity. Mame is one of the most hated, but often mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 11June 24, 2021 9:16 AM

(Nvm. My hole was too filled up. Couldn't read the entire list. Sorry.)

by Anonymousreply 12June 24, 2021 9:16 AM

R10 I think Female Trouble gets more mentions than Serial Mom, but I'd say of John Waters' films, either Pink Flamingos or Hairspray is the most popular on DL.

by Anonymousreply 13June 24, 2021 9:18 AM

Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy thread.

by Anonymousreply 14June 24, 2021 9:22 AM

Midnight Express - Guy cruised by a hot middle eastern man -- Come on prison romance has gotta be someone's fantasy!

"Moonlight - Cute "straight" guy falls in love with unattractive outcast gay boy - what DLer doesn't love that?"

R15, you did see the last section, didn't you?? Who's more fucking beautiful than Trevante Rhodes?

by Anonymousreply 17June 24, 2021 9:34 AM

R17 I am referring to Ashton Sanders... you know, the unattractive outcast gay boy the beautiful JHarrel Jerome fell in love with!

The older versions of the characters were cute which is why I specifically mentioned when they fell "in love."

by Anonymousreply 18June 24, 2021 9:41 AM

Where is Peyton Place?!

by Anonymousreply 19June 24, 2021 9:42 AM

Can’t Stop the Music

by Anonymousreply 33June 24, 2021 1:19 PM

Oh, that's what Miss Lindzey says when gentleman callers are a no-show.

by Anonymousreply 34June 24, 2021 1:23 PM

Little known fact, Miss Lindzey made a cameo appearance in DL fav The Boys In The Band.

by Anonymousreply 35June 24, 2021 1:51 PM

Seems ‘death in Venice’ gets discussed quite often. Also ‘walk on the wild side’

by Anonymousreply 41June 25, 2021 4:59 AM

Although I haven't seen the movie itself discussed that much recently, Muriel's Wedding is the originator of a DL catchphrase, and it has a strong resonance with the gay community of its time.

by Anonymousreply 42June 25, 2021 5:42 AM

More than 40 posts and no mention to Gone with the Wind?

by Anonymousreply 43June 25, 2021 6:44 AM

Back street with the delectable John gavin

by Anonymousreply 44June 25, 2021 8:21 AM

The Boys in the Band - "Oh Mary, don't ask!"

The Wizard of Oz - "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

Mommie Dearest - "You would know where to find the boys AND the booze!"

Ordinary People - "Buck would have never BEEN in the hospital!"

The Poseidon Adventure

What's Up Doc? "I am not A Eunice Burns, I am THE Eunice Burns."

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? - "Butcha ARE, Blanche! Ya ARE in that chair!"

Terms of Endearment

Call Me By Your Name

Brokeback Mountain - "I sure wish I knew how to quit you."

by Anonymousreply 45June 25, 2021 11:10 AM

R43 Which proves that although GWTW is considered one of the greatest classic movies of all time, it ain't as popular with DL'ers....

R45 obviously has been on DL as long as I have if not longer. Great post!

by Anonymousreply 47June 25, 2021 4:29 PM

Gone With The Wind - a real Classic of a movie!!! Has to be seen in a theater on the big screen to be really appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 48June 25, 2021 4:34 PM

R30, that sounds like Pieces to me.

by Anonymousreply 49June 25, 2021 6:43 PM

Dolores Claiborne (Vera Donovan).

by Anonymousreply 50June 25, 2021 8:04 PM

Steel Magnolias is the correct answer.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51June 25, 2021 9:14 PM

Steel Magnolias, Goodbar, ordinary People, mommie dearest - yeah these were the first I immediately thought of.

And Annie and how everyone’s underpants showed - those threads were always funny.

by Anonymousreply 52June 26, 2021 1:09 AM

What am I, chopped Angie?

by Anonymousreply 53June 26, 2021 1:28 AM

The three for which almost every datalounger knows every line by heart would be "Rosemary's Baby," "Mommie Dearest," and "Hairspray."

Most have also committed to memory at least vast portions of the dialogue from "All About Eve," "Mildred Pierce," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Women," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," "Valley of the Dolls." and "Showgirls."

by Anonymousreply 54June 26, 2021 1:59 AM

Thank you so much, R49. I have no idea what the film is about but this scene used to regularly do the rounds on here.

by Anonymousreply 55June 26, 2021 7:23 AM

And God made Eve from the rib of Adam, and Eve was weak and loosed the raven on the world. And the raven was called sin.

[quote] "All About Eve," "Mildred Pierce," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Women," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," "Valley of the Dolls." and "Showgirls."

Wow, I am 57 and the only one I think I even know a line from is Wizard of Oz. Those movies are from the stone age Grandpa.

by Anonymousreply 58June 30, 2021 12:44 PM

R57, the other favorite Harry Hamlin movie on DL is "Clash of the Titans", where Hamlin's nipples transfixed many a gayling during high school English class:

‘Longtime Companion’. &. ‘And the Band Played On’

by Anonymousreply 60June 30, 2021 1:07 PM

Buck would be on that list.

by Anonymousreply 61June 30, 2021 1:14 PM

Not OP, OP, but just "Buck."

by Anonymousreply 62June 30, 2021 1:15 PM

R59, those nipples get me hard to this day.

by Anonymousreply 63June 30, 2021 1:57 PM

BOUND (1996) is one of my favorite movies. I’m surprised it isn’t discussed more… here, or most anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 64June 30, 2021 6:55 PM

R58 - I bet you're 57 but look like 27.

by Anonymousreply 65July 1, 2021 6:43 PM

R59 There was a time where you did not need to be a gym rat to get attention from Hollywood. The first time I saw Harry Hamlin I was hypnotized. I thought he was one of the most beautiful men I had ever seen. He still looks pretty good today.

by Anonymousreply 66July 2, 2021 6:46 AM

Fantastic list OP. I must admit that I almost spit out my rosé when I read Dawson’s 50 Load Weekend. But you're not wrong.

I’ll also vote for Muriel’s Wedding to be added to the list.

by Anonymousreply 67July 2, 2021 7:20 AM

No Babs?

by Anonymousreply 68July 2, 2021 8:42 AM

R66, yes, Harry Hamlin had a nice body, he just didn't have the ripped gym look that so many actors are expected to have today.

by Anonymousreply 69July 2, 2021 12:38 PM

The Postman Rings Twice….the original…classic

by Anonymousreply 70July 2, 2021 1:23 PM

The Exorcist……Linda Blair really shined in that one…

by Anonymousreply 71July 2, 2021 1:26 PM

And let’s not forget my all-time favorite………The Rocky Horror Picture Show…………it’s just timeless

by Anonymousreply 72July 2, 2021 1:31 PM

Excuse me but if you are 57 you ARE from the stoneage gramps.

by Anonymousreply 73July 2, 2021 1:37 PM

What? No Ten Commandments? Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter! Are you sure you people are gay?

by Anonymousreply 74July 2, 2021 1:37 PM

The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins used to get a lot of traction but it seems the eldergays are probably dying off.
