Gray Davis was never popular like Newsom. And it was organized again by Repugs namely Arnold Schwarzenegger who ran on "I'm a business man, I wont tell you what I stand for until you elect me" talking point. That and the fame and backing of his wife family the Kennedys who even switched sides one time just for him to show blood is thicker than water. Unfortunately, as all Repugs do, he fucked them over, cheated on his with with a maid and had an illegitimate son and drove the California budget into the red. Total failure. Republican DNA.

Gavin Newsom isn't going anywhere. California GOP and others can just dream on....
California recently announced one of if not the largest state budget surplus in its history. Money the governor and democrat majority state government are doling out in ways both mandated by constitution and otherwise.
More to point as this piece in SF local news media makes clear while Newsom has made mistakes, those that would replace him aren't so hot either. More to the point this whole process is a waste of money as 2022 would be a statewide election year anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 24, 2021 5:47 AM |

Yeah, and even when Ahnold did get elected due to Enron crap, which led to Gray Davis being recalled, he soon found out that ... Oooops! he had to deal with a Democratic-controlled state senate and assembly. The same thing would happen now, since Dems control both legislative branches. .. And then when Ahnold decided to bypass that process and go the state Proposition route, he held a special election with four of his measures on the ballot, and ... Oooops! the voters said "no" to every single one of them. Even Fox News called it a "stunning rebuke."

When "Business Man" Arnold came in and replaced Gray Davis, the very first thing he did was to dismantle and destroy the Worker's Compensation system in the State of California. I believe he did this simply because he WAS a businessman and hated paying premiums and was sick of getting fined and sued for not following the laws on the books. What California has been left with is a very sick system. God help you if you get injured on the job now. by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 29, 2021 10:17 PM |
Ezra Klein explains the nonsense that is the recall:
[quote] After a slow start, California ranks 10th in the nation for coronavirus vaccinations. It’s down to about three cases per 100,000 residents. Its economy is booming. According to Bloomberg, the state “has no peers among developed economies for expanding G.D.P., creating jobs, raising household income, manufacturing growth, investment in innovation, producing clean energy and unprecedented wealth through its stocks and bonds.” State coffers are flush: The governor’s office estimates a $76 billion budget surplus. The Legislative Analyst’s Office puts it at $38 billion. (The difference turns on the definition of the word “surplus.”)
[quote] So what is California doing in this moment of plenty? Deciding whether to recall its governor, of course.
[quote] The current recall election is now scheduled for September, and the candidates to replace Newsom include Caitlyn Jenner, best known for her work as a bit character in the Kardashian cinematic universe, and John Cox, who lost to Newsom by 23.8 percentage points in 2018 and has been campaigning with a live bear to drive home the slogan that while Newsom is a “beauty,” he is a “beast.” I wish I were kidding.
[quote] Most Californians want no part of this nonsense. In May, the Public Policy Institute of California found that 54 percent of likely voters approved of Newsom’s performance, and 57 percent opposed recalling him. But a more worrying number was tucked into the cross tabs: Those who want Newsom gone were 15 points likelier to be following the recall closely.

In filing his official response to the recall effort from February last year, Newsom’s staff failed to designate his Democrat party affiliation. The governor’s campaign asked California Secretary of State Shirley Weber to allow the affiliation to appear, but she declined.
In the ruling, Judge James P. Arguelles rejected the governor’s request, stating that circumstances “do not justify excuse from the deadline.”
The law “unambiguously precludes party information from appearing on a recall ballot where the elected officer fails timely to make the designation,” the judge said.

Methinks not.
At a time when confidence is low in the US political system - in large part due to massive corruption and moral rot of it’s leaders - justifying Gavin’s failings (because he is attractive? and sleazy?) does NOT serve the people of California.
The recall is a massive waste and of time and resources. Yet, Gavin brought a large part of this on himself. Geez, he couldn’t even file the appropriate papers to have himself listed as a Democrat on the recall ballot.
Not impressed at all. Will be glad to see him go. I hope upon hope he is voted out when his term ends and he is replaced by someone competent and decent.

Well, the Repugs try to recall EVERY Democratic Governer that CA has so it's kind of routine to hear about it. I think this is the 6th time they tried it with Gavin starting from the first day in office. This just happens to be the first one that got enough votes to put it on the ballot. And I have notice Repugs and Faux News have been pushing this recall. Why do my partners shitty Trump relatives all know about Gavin's recall? Why should they care? It's not their state and yet they seem to know blow by blow and intent on his and California's downfall. There is defiantly an organized push from the right that seems to be pushing this issue on social media. 3/4 of the time the stiff I read about how he should be recalled all come from people living in another state. The good news is, they cant vote. But they are trolling.

But Gavin gave them an inch, and the Repubs are now taking a mile.
While the R’s are deplorable, neither are faultless.
The French Laundry Affair angered many (not just Republicans), and likely threw gasoline on the spark that the R’s were continually attempting to light.
At a time when emotions were running at a fever pitch (Trump turmoil, post-CA fires, Covid, lockdown, etc), Gavin revealed a hypocritical weakness.
While not condoning the recall, Gavin could of - and should of - done better. Same with the filing of his recall ballot. He is not blameless in this whole fiasco.

[quote] Gavin: I was invited to Washington, DC, after just becoming mayor. Nancy Pelosi was kind enough to offer me a ticket to watch George W. Bush’s State of the Union address. Bush ended with a pronouncement supporting a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Afterward, I was going back to get my cell phone, and a couple was standing right next to me in line and they were celebrating the president’s speech.
[quote] I remember it like it was yesterday—the way one of the two referred to the “homosexual agenda.” They were so proud that the president was finally going to “fix” that. And it was the way they said “homosexual” that really struck a chord to me.
[quote] Rather than walking downstairs to participate in a reception with Nancy Pelosi, I literally walked outside the Capitol and picked up my phone and called my staff and said, “We need to do something about it.” And it was literally that moment that triggered a series of events that ultimately led to Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin getting married and then, subsequently, 4,035 other couples from 46 states and six countries.

She looked much better then than she does now, he always looked like a rich weasel, but god those two were massive cunts. My boyfriend and I would see them hoovering all around SF in the wee hours, doing their see and be seen thing. They are both massive turds.

Every politician has a few redeeming qualities, I guess. But if someone has led a life of profligacy and I don’t just mean a few scrapes along the way —“OMG this Christian Right-wing Trump-loving Republican got a DUI once” doesn’t count — but just a bunch of bullshit throughout their lives that kind of didn’t stop when they ran for office? Yeah no bueno.

Homeless people are often mentally ill and druggies. No matter how good the economy is, you're going to have homeless people.

Why are you rating California's that way?

Because we are not delusional Deplorable Repugs. Facts are facts and all you have to do is use the Google. He has a 56% approval rating sate wide. That's not low enough for a recall. For reference, Trump was in the 30's and low 40's most of his Presidency. Plus there is no fresh new interesting face with actual experience running against him except old men in drag and old Republicans.

For someone who's so intent on "facts" you sure are loose with them. Trump's polls were in mid to high 40's for most of his term. Newsom's' are in high 40's in California.

I signed the petition for Gavin to be recalled. I did it because he was too cocky and needed a kick in the balls, not necessarily because I plan to vote him out. He has definitely ramped things up since the recall was official and he finally acknowledged it. I also like that he'll have to not only win the recall, but also be campaigning for 2022. He'll be working extra hard for the state over the next 1.5 years with the threat of getting kicked out of office always looming. I think covid and any potential surges will be the make or break for him in the recall. If LA gets our shit together and the state can keep the virus and restrictions to a minimum he'll be fine. If not, I think he's in jeopardy. Any business closures or restrictions would be political suicide.

Everyday people? You mean like Republican rubes from Flyoverstan or the insurrectionist that showed up on Jan 6th? No thanks, they can keep moving to Texas for all I care. Prices are through the roof because everyone wants to live in California. It's basic math.
