‘Heartbreaking’ conditions in US migrant child camp

At a US border detention centre in the Texan desert, migrant children have been living in alarming conditions - where disease is rampant, food can be dangerous and there are reports of sexual abuse, an investigation by the BBC has found through interviews with staff and children.

In recent months, the US has seen a massive rise in migrants and asylum seekers from Central America. Violence, natural disasters and pandemic-related economic strife are some of the reasons behind the influx, experts say.

Some have also suggested the perception of a more lenient administration under Democrat Joe Biden has contributed to the crisis, though the White House has urged migrants against journeying to the US border.

The tented camp in the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas, is the temporary home for over 2,000 teenaged children who have crossed the US-Mexico border alone and are now awaiting reunification with family in the US.

Findings from the BBC's investigation include allegations of sexual abuse, Covid and lice outbreaks, a child waiting hours for medical attention, a lack of clean clothes and hungry children being served undercooked meat.

The BBC has spoken to camp employees about these conditions and seen photos and video smuggled out by staff.

Did the BBC report on this when Trump was president?

by Anonymousreply 1June 23, 2021 10:46 AM

The US govt and US taxpayers shouldn’t be responsible for the grossly irresponsible parents of other countries. They can go home. They’re not refugees.

The problem is the mixed messages it is sending about the border: thereby encouraging every opportunistic dropkick this side of the Amazon to head north. For all his wrongs, Trump had one thing right: a nation state os only as strong as its borders.

by Anonymousreply 2June 23, 2021 10:46 AM

Trump didn't have one thing right, you disgusting troll.

by Anonymousreply 3June 23, 2021 10:49 AM

Kamala is handling it, OP. As soon as she figures out the root cause.

by Anonymousreply 4June 23, 2021 10:56 AM

The U.S. needs to fine Mexico for every single person who makes it across the border. It's their fault they let them into their country from Central America. It's their fault they ignore the human trafficking that goes on across their country.

R2, riiight, and therefore we should not worry about any human rights abuses? You’re a very sick human being.

by Anonymousreply 6June 23, 2021 11:08 AM

It looks slightly more humane than the chain link fence cages with bare concrete floors and a mylar blanket, in windowless warehouses.

by Anonymousreply 7June 23, 2021 11:08 AM

That's a good question, R1, so I looked into it. Went to Google and searched

[italic] trump migrant camp conditions site:bbc.com [/italic]

and saw almost nothing about Trump, but instead multiple negative stories about Biden and immigrant camps on the BBC in the first few pages of results, things like "neglect, filth and fear" mentioned prominently in articles about the camps under Biden's administration.

Meanwhile the Trump stories had far more banal headlines, like "Trump migrant separation policy: Children 'in cages' in Texas" and "Migrant children in the US: The bigger picture explained." You have to go to the second or third page to get anything really negative about Trump, but articles like "US migrant children cry for separated parents on audio" come with quotes from Trump excusing what's happening.

Had to get to the fourth page before the ICE whistleblower story about the Trump admin corruption in ICE even showed up on the BBC.

There's a definite difference in coverage, that's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 8June 23, 2021 11:21 AM

Holy fuck, they don't deserve 4-star accomodations.

by Anonymousreply 9June 23, 2021 11:23 AM

Oh. Thank you, BBC. No similar reports from the camps of unwanted Lesbos, though, in your beloved EU?

Maybe their parents shouldn't have assumed they could use their kids as battering rams?

by Anonymousreply 10June 23, 2021 11:25 AM

Say it loud. Say it clear. Refugees are welcome here.

by Anonymousreply 11June 23, 2021 11:30 AM

I remember being incredibly frustrated at the lack of coverage in the news media about the way Trump was treating immigrants, it was frequently relegated to the opinion panels on cable news or to social media outrage. The same doesn't seem to be happening with Biden, which I guess we all kind of expected.

by Anonymousreply 12June 23, 2021 11:34 AM

Maybe the should have applied legally then?

by Anonymousreply 13June 23, 2021 11:35 AM

R11 They are not refugees. They are invaders, looking for an easier way of life, and exploiting their children to achieve that goal.

by Anonymousreply 14June 23, 2021 11:36 AM

It’s okay for Democrats to keep kids in cages.

by Anonymousreply 15June 23, 2021 11:53 AM

LMAO...Republicans jumped through hoops insisting cages weren't actually cages. Now that kids are being kept in dormitories and open bays, Republicans insist the kids are being kept in cages...and throwing out the line, "It's okay for Democrats to keep kids in cages." Fucking losers.

by Anonymousreply 16June 23, 2021 12:01 PM

The cages started with Obama. They continued with Trump. They are still here with Biden.

by Anonymousreply 17June 23, 2021 12:17 PM

Whatever helps you sleep at night, R17.

by Anonymousreply 18June 23, 2021 12:41 PM

There are many countries allowing these people to move across. Sanction or fine them until they stop it.

by Anonymousreply 19June 23, 2021 1:06 PM

What, R18??

by Anonymousreply 20June 23, 2021 1:09 PM

It is heartbreaking...

To know our tax dollars are being wasted by people flouting the law.

by Anonymousreply 21June 23, 2021 6:45 PM

R14 wants to pay 150 bucks for a chicken ceasar salad rather than see any brown people at his Piggly Wiggly

by Anonymousreply 22June 23, 2021 6:58 PM

R22 wants to pay 50 cents for a chicken ceasar salad and will exploit all brown people at his Piggly Wiggly to get it.

by Anonymousreply 23June 24, 2021 8:32 PM

R23, capitalism doesn't work without immigrant labor.
