White UK influencer comes out as nonbinary and Korean

Please respect they's identity as nonbinary and Korean.

White Instagram influencer Oli London was accused of appropriating the South Korean flag and trivializing identity after coming out as nonbinary on June 16. In an Instagram post, they stated that their pronouns were “they/them/Korean/Jimin,” referring to K-Pop star and BTS member Park Ji-Min.

London has had over 15 surgeries to make them look like a K-pop star, according to the Daily Mail.

“I do identify as Korean,” London said in a YouTube video on Monday. “This is my choice, my decision. It’s not hurting anyone.”

The British influencer tweeted on June 18 that they are a nonbinary person who identifies as Korean, stating that, in addition to “they/them,” they also use “kor/ean.”

London also posted an image of a flag with the same shapes as the Korean flag but with the rainbow colors of the LGBTQ pride flag.

“This is my new official flag for being a non-binary person who identifies as Korean,” London said in the tweet.

London previously received criticism for undergoing plastic surgeries to “look Korean,” specifically like their idol, Jimin. The Daily Mail reports that since 2013, London has undergone skin whitening treatments, five rhinoplasties, a chin reduction, a cheekbone reduction, liposuction, and a blepharoplasty, which alters eye shape.

As someone said upthread, the sad thing is that it genuinely is possible for a white English person to become Korean. But, you have to really commit: 5 years living in South Korea, finding a way to support yourself without getting into trouble with the law all that time, and passing a test in Korean language, history, and culture. Then, you can become a naturalised citizen and get your passport. You don't even need to find a Korean to marry!

If Oli did all of these things and truly made the country their home, they would have earned the right to be a 'real' Korean in my book, at least to some extent rather than merely on paper: since belonging to a particular country if much more about participating in a living culture rather than sharing a dubious set of racialised physical features as far as I am concerned, and there likely isn't any real genetic basis to argue for a discreet Korean 'race' sufficiently distinct from the surrounding Chinese, Mongolians, Japanese, Manchurians, etc. Of course what is actually going on is a hideous train wreck like the rest of this person's life.
