Where are the unusual immigrant enclaves in your city or country?

I always find it interesting to find large pockets of immigrants in unlikely places.

For example, Somalis in Minneapolis and Portland (Maine), Indians in North and South Carolina, and Arabs in Detroit.

I wonder what attracted them to those places?

Any others?

Many recent immigrant groups, like the Somalis in Maine andMinnesota (which seems a bit odd, climatologically) were first resettled there by the US government. When their fellow countrymen and woman got here, resettled or not, they went there, too.

Dallas has lots of Syrians. Just as many US cities, going back more than a century, had and have immigrant enclaves: the Italians settled near other Italians, the Poles, Greeks, Irish, etc. likewise. Boston’s North End (Italian), Detroit’s Greektown, every city’s Chinatown, etc.

Why OP questions that this is so - and has been since before the Civil War - is surprising. Is this indicative of a lack of historical knowledge, more surprising as it’s been a central tenet of immigrant assimilation by so many of our ancestors since the country began, or an an effort to demonize immigrants, something seen more and more on DL, is unclear to me. I hope it’s not the latter.

by Anonymousreply 7June 20, 2021 1:03 PM

Homos.

by Anonymousreply 8June 20, 2021 1:05 PM

OP, I've wondered this too, from time to time. It is interesting to see immigrant populations clustered together in odd places.

by Anonymousreply 9June 20, 2021 1:06 PM

Yes, OP. I like taking strolls through immigrant enclaves too.

OP was merely asking why, for example, Somalis settled in a seemingly random place like Minneapolis, given that Somalia has such a hot climate.

The early immigrants to Minnesota from Scandinavia knew how to farm in a cold climate, and so it's not all that surprising they wound up there.

I have a good friend who is Indian and she claims that different castes of Indians settled in different areas, that the Bay Area Indians are most Brahmins who came to work in Silicon Valley, that the Indians in the South are from a different caste and all named Patel and run motels, and that the Indians in the NY area are a mix--Brahmins in finance and tech and lower caste driving cabs and owning delis.

There's a town in NJ called Edison that is mostly Indian now and she says she and her friends refer to the people there as "Guindians" (portmanteau of "Guido" and "Indian")

OTOH, while she's great, she's also someone who never lets facts get in the way of a great story, so take the above with a grain of salt.

I do know, independently of her, that many Indians and Chinese are moving into heavily Jewish suburbs of the Northeast, places like Scarsdale, Short Hills, and Newton, because those towns have excellent public schools.

Hmong in Wisconsin

by Anonymousreply 32June 20, 2021 2:15 PM

Minneapolis / St Paul: Minnesota in general has a strong social service network willing to settle refugees. Vietnamese and Hmong (Lao) settled in St Paul > primarily because one of their generals/warlords decided to live there. I believe the same is true of Somali's in Minneapolis. We also have a large west African community in the northwest suburbs: Liberians, Ghanians, etc.

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2021 2:17 PM

I grew up in a predominantly white, Catholic suburb of St. Louis. Today it is virtually all Bosnian Muslims.

by Anonymousreply 34June 20, 2021 2:18 PM

Ethiopians in Boulder, CO????? One restaurant doesn’t make an enclave. This is something made up by a white hippy. I remember when Boulder had a “soul food” restaurant that got everyone excited, but no one went to. Boulder, stop pretending you’re not homophobic and a town of all white people!

by Anonymousreply 35June 20, 2021 2:29 PM

Some of these groups were refugees who were settled in areas determined by social service groups such as Catholic Charities and their counterparts in Protestant sects.

Yeah the Portuguese / Cape Verde immigrants in Massachusetts seems so particular. I heard Portuguese programming on the local radio there - which I've never heard anywhere else in the US. Spanish of course - there are so many Spanish stations it is insane. Russian, Polish, Korean, Chinese, Haitian French, Vietnamese - all relatively common and I've heard in many areas of the US.

But Portuguese in Massachusetts was a first for me.

r38 I think FLDS is one of those extremist Mormon groups. Certainly not an "immigrant" group.

Hmongs are an ethnic group from southeast Asia and southern China.

My Greek family began its immigrant journey in Salt Lake City, although they didn't stay there long. I think, like many immigrant groups, they went to a place where there were people they knew from the old country (family members, people from the same town, etc.)

Here's why the Hmong are in the US: (From Wiki at R44)

In the early 1960s, partially as a result of the North Vietnamese invasion of Laos, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) Special Activities Division began to recruit, train and lead the indigenous Hmong people in Laos to fight against North Vietnamese Army divisions invading Laos during the Vietnam War. This "Secret Army" was organized into various mobile regiments and divisions, including various Special Guerrilla Units, all of whom were led by General Vang Pao. An estimated sixty-percent (60%) of Hmong men in Laos joined up

Vermont (mostly Burlington) has pockets of every war torn nation's population. We have an initiative that brings immigrants over. You don't even really have to ask people when they got here if you know any world history. My family was one of the first families through the program actually when it first started after WWII.

Most of the different populations have been overall wonderful additions (my family being one of the exceptions of course) and I love being able to go down my street /through my neighborhood and know how much I have in common with my immigrant neighbors.

My favorites from a 'bring joy for a silly reason' are the Tibetan people. If there is even the teensiest tiniest piece of lawn or green available they will plant vegetables and beautiful flowers surrounded by shiny objects and plastic thingamabobs. If there is no lawn but there is a flat surface they will put planters out. if there is no flat surface they will make one with baby gates and milk crates. It's inspiring.

The friendliest are the Haitian women and the Congolese women.

R57 if that’s what you like, you’ll find it. There are some stunning examples in the local supermarkets. And gyms, one imagines.

The Portuguese, and now their co-linguist Brazilian cousins, have been in New Bedford for 200 years. And near-by Fall River for 100 years or more. It was a a busy whaling port and the Cape Verdeans and Portuguese were among the sailors. Think Moby Dick. Besides the Brazilians, lots of them now from Minas Gerais, there was a big influx of Portuguese nationals living in the country’s colonies when Portugal lost its empire in the 1970’s. Their kids are totally assimilated by now. The Brazilians are the newcomers but seem to assimilate more quickly and they’re usually hardworking and good-looking people.

With the vast majority of them settling in the prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba).
Lots of Pacific Islanders in Salt Lake City, too.

You can blame that on the proselytizing missionaries of the Mormon church.

by Anonymousreply 122June 21, 2021 10:13 PM

Pacific Islanders are among the few groups left that will still bite. The church is losing its stranglehold on Utah as the number of new recruits dries up, boomers die off, and younger members quit, so it’s in their interest to speed up the rate of Pacific Islander relocation.

That’s where the BYU scholarships come in as well as the unspoken promise — very loudly unspoken — that PI people already in Utah will gain higher status in the church if they help friends and relatives relocate. And they’ll be #blessed beyond words. They don’t and they aren’t.

It’s really gross to hear people talk about it because there’s always an undercurrent of “ewwww, so sad, but I suppose to [italic]those people[/italic] it’s luxurious” when it’s learned that two huge multi-generational families are crammed into a three-bedroom house solely because they’ve fallen for yet another lie.

Fijians own a convenience store (liquor, lottery tickets and taro root) and a home health aid agency in my neighborhood.

Interesting, r123.  The Fijian denominations I mentioned at r127 are all conservative and I found another (Church of God) that sounds the same.  There's also a Methodist congregation, but I suspect their not as liberal as some American Methodists.

There's also a pretty large Mormon PI community, apparently.  About 1,100 congregants go to services at two different locations, probably more now since the linked article is seven years old.

Why those cities? Because that's where their American sponsors were from.
Do they require tithing for immigrants like these? Giving away 10% of an immigrant family's income could put them in financial straits.

They do. Paying the full tithe is required of anyone who wants to be in good standing, with a few exceptions: those who depend 100% on church welfare programs (not applicable since FDR, but they still repeat it because it sounds so warm and fuzzy) and those in general-authority positions (~100 people in upper management who receive a living expense and parsonage directly from the church). Financial help from missionaries' families isn't counted but they do have to pay on other income, if there is any.

That $100 billion rainy-day fund is no accident.

Russian refugees (mostly Slavic Baptist) in Sacramento, Portland, Spokane, and Seattle suburbs. The history is that under Stalin, religious people who were not Russian Orthodox were considered a danger, and forcibly removed from Western Russia and the Ukraine to the central Asian republics and to Siberia, mostly in the 1930s. So these Slavic Baptists, who probably number close to 1,000,000 in the western US, are almost all from places like Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Omsk, (Siberia). They are ethnically Russian, and after the breakup of the Soviet Union, were not particularly welcome in the new Muslim republics, whose populations were mostly nomadic and Turkik.

R126 - yes, and, in fact Lauren Bacall's family came from Romania and they lived there and she says how she'd go on her bike to see Bogart and her mom would be mumbling in the Romanian language about shame and a married man and how her daughter was "like a man" (roommate says it means a woman too tough and forceful to be argued with in a reasonable manner). In the1980's, when my roommate and her family were living there and she was a kid, she recalls their absolute oblivion to the AIDS crisis, gay culture or desire or even the notion that they should assimilate. Her dad was different because he married an American law student and was from an intellectual family so obviously she grew up American but really, Russians and other Eastern European folks at that time were still living in their own bubble and voting Republican. Very oblivious to the surroundings.

R153 - I agrea that there are many recent transplants but they were present in the 50's - 80's as well in their own huddle. The newer ones are mostly Jews who went from Ukraine and Russia to Israel and then to the area. Lots of the older Eastern Europeans in the area are from quite a different social strata - intellectuals who escaped as the Communist regime rendered them "of socially unhealthy origin" (i.e. educates and, thus a challenge for the regime). This is exactly how my roommate's dad got out of the Communist hell that was Romania and same for many of the original immigrants in that area. Doctors, artists, writers, and other educated people. Lots of the newcomers are more mercantile and have opened markets, delis, etc.

Oh and R154 - I was born at Glendale Memorial (where my late partner practiced) and my roommate at Cedar-Sinai. We are both from Los Angeles.

Many still live in their bubble. Here in the Sacramento area, one of their churches was responsible for the biggest Covid hotspot in the county. They were utterly contemptuous of county health officials and continued to congregate.
least 70 people at the Bethany Slavic Missionary Church were infected with Covid-19.
However, the church released a statement Friday saying media reports about the Covid-19 outbreak were "inaccurate and falsely place emphasis on this church." The church also said it hadn't been informed any of its parishioners had died as reported by a local newspaper.
Singh, a 26-year-old worker at the AT&T call center in Sacramento, was attacked while picnicking at Lake Natoma with friends in July 2007. His attackers, authorities say, were Russian and Slavic immigrants believed to have ties to Sacramento's virulently anti-gay, Slavic evangelical movement. Singh was first verbally then physically assaulted because the perpetrators perceived him to be gay, according to the Sacramento Sheriff's Department's arrest report. He died four days later at a local hospital, having never regained consciousness.
One of those arrested, Alexsander Schevchenko, 22, was sentenced to 150 days in county jail after being found guilty on two misdemeanor charges. But Andrey Vusik, 30, identified as the man who threw the fatal punch, fled the country following Singh's death.

Gotta love how R7 (there’s always one) automatically assumes OP has racist intentions, and attempts to tease it out. YES R7: OP needs this information so we can all draw up ghetto and gassing lists. You’re welcome!

The Somalis in Minnesota weren’t resettled by the government. It was wholly an initiative of the Lutheran Church. Rather sadistic given the climate.

I take the (unfashionable) view that in all cases refugees should be settled in the countries closest to them for swifter and cheaper integration. For every $1,000 spent in a first world country on resettling a refugee, you could resettle several if you gave that money to a third world country. Over their entire lifetime a single refugee in a first world country costs it about $500k - $1million in govt support — and there are no good studies on the outcome in terms of integration and mental health. In terms of bang for buck, and cohesive societies, it’s not great, but thanks to UN and NGO pressure it’s become a fashion. The paradigm needs to be changed, and changed soon, because we can’t resettle the entire peoples of Africa and the Middle East — the majority of whom wish to relocate.
