“Linger” by The Cranberries - Is it their best song?

What a fucking terrific song. I forgot all about this song (well I haven’t heard it in a long time so that is why) and when I heard the cover version of it (which was terrific) on Cruel Summer memories came back to me from the 90s when the original came out.

My goodness. What a lovely voice Dolores had. RIP.

Love this song. Did you like it?

Was this their best?

Shout out to No Vacation for their wonderful cover version, probably the only cover I ever liked for a Cranberries song.

The answer is there really isn't a best song. But if one has to pick? It's clearly Dreams.

by Anonymousreply 2June 10, 2021 12:53 AM

Yes. For sure.

by Anonymousreply 3June 10, 2021 12:56 AM

Dreams FTW

by Anonymousreply 4June 10, 2021 12:59 AM

OP, I love this song.

by Anonymousreply 5June 10, 2021 12:59 AM

I think “When You’re Gone” is their best.

by Anonymousreply 6June 10, 2021 1:01 AM

Their whole first record is pretty great.

by Anonymousreply 7June 10, 2021 1:03 AM

Dreams is gonna be their most known and popular besides Zombie, for whatever reason. Linger is Top 3

by Anonymousreply 8June 10, 2021 1:17 AM

The song is about a fart.

by Anonymousreply 9June 10, 2021 1:28 AM

To all those people doing lines - don't do it

Their lyrics were horribly preachy and laughable, as if someone with a tenuous grasp of the English language had used a rhyming dictionary - and they were fucking native speakers! I could never get over that in any attempt to warm up to their music.

by Anonymousreply 11June 10, 2021 1:32 AM

Zombie is my favorite song of theirs. Here's their Tiny Desk (NPR) concert. Linger is the first song.

Don’t know yet if anyone else has, but my vote goes to “Dreams.” It was my favorite song EVAH for the longest and can still bathe me in waves of saudade.

R4 Yes!

by Anonymousreply 14June 10, 2021 1:37 AM

I never liked Zombie.

This comment in the Dreams video is, like, [italic]sooo[/italic]…

[bold]perfect[/italic].

[quote] You know when you find a song you haven't heard in such a long time and you feel like a piece of your soul has been hiding in it? That's Dreams to me, I'm so glad i found this song again.

by Anonymousreply 16June 10, 2021 1:41 AM

"Dreams" is their best song by a landslide as far as I'm concerned. The vocals, the jangly guitars, the gorgeous outro—it fills my heart with both sorrow and joy, simultaneously. I remember when Dolores died, a children's choir recorded a live cover of it, and it brought me to tears.

by Anonymousreply 17June 10, 2021 1:42 AM

R16 like so like for real

by Anonymousreply 18June 10, 2021 1:43 AM

What killed her?

by Anonymousreply 19June 10, 2021 1:43 AM

R17 The bass never gets enough credit. It’s the heartbeat of the song.

by Anonymousreply 20June 10, 2021 1:44 AM

Dreams is their best song.

by Anonymousreply 21June 10, 2021 1:45 AM

R20 I guess you're right, but that's probably true for most songs. Same with the drums. Still, the jangly, shimmering guitars in "Dreams" are very striking to me (maybe because I play guitar myself).

by Anonymousreply 22June 10, 2021 1:50 AM

[quote]What killed her?

She was shitfaced drunk and decided that was the perfect time to take a bath. She passed out and drowned. Similar to the same way Whitney died, except Whitney was fucked up on drugs instead of booze.

by Anonymousreply 23June 10, 2021 2:10 AM

R22 The whole fucking thing is amazing. The bass runs sort contrapuntal to the rest of the song, tonally that is.

by Anonymousreply 24June 10, 2021 2:17 AM

I wonder if these ODs in bathtubs are really suicides. Not many people really take baths (soak in a filled-up bathtub). If I'm shitfaced drunk or on drugs, I don't think I'd even have the energy to run hot water, etc.

Drowning seems like a painful way to die, though.

by Anonymousreply 25June 10, 2021 2:18 AM

R25 I don't know exactly how this has been deduced, but I believe that, physiologically speaking, drowning is relatively painless. There is panic initially, but if you're unconscious to begin with (i.e. passing out from an overdose in a bathtub), you wouldn't even have that. If sort of makes sense when you think about it—to die in water is similar to where we begin in the womb. I think a lot of addicts tend to take baths for this reason; being submerged in warm water brings you back to the most comfortable, protected state you've been in: in the womb. Heroin addicts often describe the feeling of a "warm blanket covering their entire body" when they shoot up. Similar terminology. It's that feeling of warmth and equilibrium that they are chasing.

Zombie>Linger>Dreams

by Anonymousreply 27June 10, 2021 3:40 AM

Zombie is most people’s favorite and I never understood why.

by Anonymousreply 28June 10, 2021 8:31 AM

^Because deep down, we all care very deeply about the Irish troubles of 1916.

by Anonymousreply 29June 10, 2021 9:03 AM

Actually, R29, that is a very minor reference point compared to the larger, more important and universal message of the song.

A live performance at Woodstock in '94. The drummer is hot.

I hate Zombie, because it was such a hit that the band moved towards rock instead of staying true to their folksy roots. The first two albums are great, To the Faithful Departed is just not as good.

My most favorite song of them is a B-side called Liar.

Never cared for them. Their music seemed manufactured to me and Dolores was the poor man's Sinead.

by Anonymousreply 32June 10, 2021 10:58 PM

My farts linger.

by Anonymousreply 33June 10, 2021 11:32 PM

Love this song

by Anonymousreply 34June 15, 2021 11:03 PM

You know… Every now and then I think you’d like to smell my asshole. I’ll fart so it lingers.

by Anonymousreply 35June 15, 2021 11:06 PM

I know it's rather cryptic and feels unrelated to the song, but I actually really love the video to this song.

by Anonymousreply 36June 15, 2021 11:16 PM

It sounds like Ireland to me.
