‘No fears’: Kayaker embarks on a 2,400-mile solo journey from California

Cyril Derreumaux, a California resident, has been planning a solo journey from the Golden State to Hawaii since 2018.

Derreumaux’s kayak, which cost around $80,000 to build, is self-righting and has enough room for 70 days worth of food and for him to sleep, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

Derreumaux, 44, on Monday has embarked on a trek from Sausalito to Honolulu, an excursion that will span 2,400 nautical miles and take between 60 and 70 days to finish, according to the publication.

Derreumaux has kayaked for 12 years and said challenging himself was the motivation for the trip, KTVU reported.

“Being alone, is just very different,” he told the station. “I have to be self-aware all of the time, what’s going on mentally, physically. The weather the electronics, the boat evolution, seasickness, sleep deprivation, food nutrition, hydration. There’s so much I have to think so I have to be self-aware at all times.”

Derreumaux moved from France to the Bay Area and runs online stores from his home in Larkspur, KPIX reported.

He told the station that he’s carrying high-calorie bars, smoothie powders and freeze-dried meals.

“There are no fears,” he said. “I have prepared, I feel serene, I feel ready. I have been waiting for this day and conditions are perfect. The boat is ready and I am ready.”

Ed Gillet is the only person who has kayaked alone across this area of the Pacific, which he did in 1987 with the help of a kite, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Rowers have also attempted the trek from California to Hawaii, and Lia Ditton from Point Richmond completed the feat last year in 86 days, according to the publication.

People can follow Derreumaux’s journey via online tracker as he paddles his way to Hawaii.

Well, the Chumash people, native to California, used to take reed boats from mainland Southern California to the Channel Islands all of the time. But California to Hawaii on just a kayak and solo? Sounds a bit nuts to me.

I'm guessing he can pack enough bottled water for the trip.

You’re going to die out there.

by Anonymousreply 12June 1, 2021 8:46 PM

You can’t walk around on a kayak. Seems like sitting and paddling for 70 days isn’t a great idea.

by Anonymousreply 13June 1, 2021 9:06 PM

Does this really count as a kayak? lol

It looks like it might even have an engine.

I wonder if he has a desalination machine in the back, also?

by Anonymousreply 21June 1, 2021 10:04 PM

R13, maybe when he needs to stretch out, he straddles an ocean buoy or takes a nap on the Great Pacific Ocean Gyre.

by Anonymousreply 23June 1, 2021 10:07 PM

That kayak is big enough that he could pack a couple of cases of bottled water and store it somewhere.

If the crossing takes 60 days or so, all he needs to bring are 3 cases of water, and he's good.

by Anonymousreply 52June 2, 2021 4:57 PM

"It'd be so easy to get lost. "

I assume he has GPS, satellite navigation, compass and backup compass, and has worked out some way to keep the kayak on course while he snatches a couple of hours sleep. As long as he isn't hit by a storm, he should be able to find some part of the Hawaiian island chain.

If he is hit by a storm, though, he's fucked.

by Anonymousreply 53June 2, 2021 5:05 PM

The open ocean is terrifying.

I tried one of those sensory deprivation tanks once where you float in salt water (not at all deep-maybe 18" or so) in complete darkness listening to Enya music. Maybe I'm too ADD but I couldn't sit still and relax. I can't imagine being alone in a kayak in the middle of the Pacific for weeks.

1. He must be REALLY sick of people to seek out 60-70 days alone in the middle of the ocean. 2) I have no earthly clue how he could relax at night enough to sleep. 3) Rain happens, especially in the Pacific nearer to Hawaii; does he have some contraption that he straps over the kayak opening? 4) Even though that boat is big, it really doesn't look big enough to store enough food and water for a 60-70 trip; is he planning on maybe meeting up with somebody halfway to Hawaii? 5) Yeah...the whole poop thing. Peeing is obviously fine, but the other just seems like a literal pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 76June 3, 2021 6:59 AM

This is similar to the what Polynesian Voyaging Society has been doing since 1976, although they travel on a double-hulled canoe, rather than a kayak.

I think that a large canoe is more desirable because there's more room to move around.

However, they don't use any modern technology to make the voyage.

This canoe has sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti a number of times, and it's slightly farther than the trip from Hawaii to California.

Interestingly, they can make the trip in about a month because they use wind and sails to propel the canoe. The poor kayaking guy has to paddle the whole way.

Also, they can poop and pee over the side of the canoe, which is probably easier than trying to do it off of a small kayak.

Another benefit of the canoe is that it can accommodate more than just one person, so it's not as lonely as traveling in a one-person kayak.

Whatever the case, all I know is that all these people are very brave to undertake this kind of adventure.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 77June 3, 2021 6:59 AM

Another interesting thing of note is that Polynesians have been traveling over thousands of miles of open ocean with no modern instruments, for over a thousand years.

They were sailing the vast Pacific Ocean, for centuries before Europeans even dared venture across the Atlantic.

Born in Hawaii and my parents still live there (but I'm not Polynesian). Yes, r78 they've been making that trip for hundreds of years (or longer) and the boat they use is not called a kayak, it's called a catamaran and has sails, so the trip will be much shorter (along with far more man/woman power).

by Anonymousreply 83June 3, 2021 7:45 AM

R83, can you believe that little Hawaiian canoe sailed around the world?

Across the Pacific, through Indian Ocean, to South Africa, the Caribbean, the US East Coast, through the Panama Canal, back to the Pacific and then to Hawaii again.

It's pretty amazing.

by Anonymousreply 125June 3, 2021 6:35 PM

How DOES an ocean adventurer get seasick?

People with good stomachs don't get seasick if they can see the horizon, it allows the brain to regain a sense of equilibrium and stop the motion sickness - which BTW is why birdwatchers on pelagic trips don't get seasick, while sport fishermen do, the birders are looking out to see all the time. But a kayaker in swell can't see the horizon, a kayaker in the open ocean is going to be sitting down all the time with a butt that's slightly below the waterline, so even a three-foot swell can block their view of the horizon, and with a seven-foot swell or a twenty-foot swell, all they can see is the side of the next wave. Does this guy have a lot of open ocean experience?

by Anonymousreply 126June 3, 2021 6:52 PM

In R111's map, the currents move south. But Cyril... he's improbably moving north.

He should go south but stay close to the coast so he can forage inland and get supplies when necessary and go all the way to the Panama Canal.

A MAN A PLAN A CANAL PANAMA

by Anonymousreply 139June 4, 2021 1:22 AM

He's not paddling for 5 days? It's sort of amazing how quickly this went wayward.

IF he wants to go back, does he have to paddle back or can he radio someone to come get him?

by Anonymousreply 140June 4, 2021 1:27 AM

Not looking too good, that's a tight turn in quite the wrong direction he's taken. Lay off the wine buddy.

So he has an anchor? Isn't that cheating? I thought the self-righting craft was bad enough. Hang on, he also has a cabin? Is that where his full en suite bathroom is? (I want to know about the poop thing too) Where's the outboard motor? His first mate? The Professor and Mary Ann?

Made water as in the classical "whizzed" or doing some desalinization?

by Anonymousreply 141June 4, 2021 1:30 AM

R140 I'm sure they can scoot out there and pick him up. And if he's too sick to radio for help / doesn't respond to check-ins, they likely have a plan in place to save his ass.

I really don't get the early seasickness either. He must have done a week or at least a couple of days in a row as a test run.

I'm starting to root for the whale.

by Anonymousreply 142June 4, 2021 1:36 AM

I can't imagine just deciding to "hang out" for 4 - 6 days to wait out the wind. I am cheering for this guy but it's not looking great.

by Anonymousreply 143June 4, 2021 1:55 AM

Where is the post where he said he was going to wait it out? Could someone copy and paste it? I'm looking for it on the tracker/log thing, but can't find it.

by Anonymousreply 144June 4, 2021 1:57 AM

Just found it, never mind. Seems certainly odd.

by Anonymousreply 145June 4, 2021 2:00 AM

it's on his comments on the tracker log some time today.

by Anonymousreply 146June 4, 2021 2:00 AM

Here's his latest post:

[quote]Later in the day I wanted to paddle so I came out to the deck to get ready and realized something was wrong as I couldn't move the steering lines. Looking back I saw my retrieval line was entangled. I stripped to my underwear and added the tether attached to the lifeline on starboard and followed it to the rudder. After 5 minutes the line was untangled. That was enough for the day- with the wind picking up I went back into the cabin. Mentally I am feeling good, but preparing for what might be a number of days in the cabin.

Not getting why he had to do this in only his underwear.

It would be helpful if he said just how bad the winds are, from what direction, etc. He's going to sit for longer than he's been out for. Considering he's not currently paddling, you'd think he'd have time to give a bit more technical detail.

by Anonymousreply 149June 4, 2021 2:07 AM

Will he masturbate while waiting days to paddle again.

r152 I've never watched that movie. On purpose. I can think of nothing more terrifying. Even as a really young kid growing up in SoCal and going to the beach often, I was always afraid of what lies beneath.

by Anonymousreply 157June 4, 2021 3:28 AM

...Is he drunk?

by Anonymousreply 158June 4, 2021 3:52 AM

I would imagine he'd be smart enough to not drink and keep his wits about him while out in life or death situations all day/every day. Also, drinking dehydrates you, which is the LAST thing you want when you're traveling on salt water with probably a limited amount of drinking water besides what you process.

by Anonymousreply 159June 4, 2021 3:54 AM

R159 Well, where the fuck is he going?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 160June 4, 2021 3:55 AM

If the wind is against him, he might have no choice but to stall or go sideways. Sailboats can use the wind to move forward, even a direct headwind, but if you've ever tried to kayak into a strong headwind you know how exhausting it can be - and if the wind is strong enough then you just can't move forward. If he's going in the wrong direction or staying still, it may be to avoid going into the headwind and wearing himself out. If "making water" means he has a desalinizer on board, then he's okay to just wait for a while, as long as he has enough food to last for an extra week or two.

I presume he has something on board that will give him detailed forecasts and weather conditions, so he knows what's up with what, where.

by Anonymousreply 161June 4, 2021 3:56 AM

If the winds and current are against him, all the paddling/power arming in the world won't help him get very far and will just exhaust him (and potentially end in a fatal outcome). that's why people die in Pacific riptides; they are trying to fight against something they don't have much foreknowledge about.

If he had a sail, it would be different. He has probably looked at the winds/currents/weather conditions and realized he is better to just hang out as much as he can until/unless something changes (which of course, it can, in an instant). Nothing on the ocean is certain and he is ONE person, not a viking or hawaiian troop to power through it.

by Anonymousreply 162June 4, 2021 4:04 AM

If he needs to get rescued, he'd better damn well be paying for it himself.

by Anonymousreply 163June 4, 2021 4:22 AM

Nah, 163...did you see his page of supporters/backers? he has this shit lined up already (or should have). Not that i mean he thought it would go like this, but with all of his high profile supporters, this would already have been an approved contingency plan if things didn't go well.

I wonder if they discussed how long he needed to be out there "battling the elements" before they would "save" him. That sounds diabolical, yet i can't imagine that's not a possibility. there wasn't enough hype around it.

I really hope he's okay.

by Anonymousreply 164June 4, 2021 4:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 169June 4, 2021 5:21 AM

Yeah, we're already wondering if he has either 1) drifted while asleep or decided to ride out wind/tides for 4 to 5 days, 2) he decided to paddle toward a pacific tide towards Hawaii or 3) he might not be with us anymore or gave up.

by Anonymousreply 170June 4, 2021 5:29 AM

IT IS FUCKING PIRATES!

by Anonymousreply 171June 4, 2021 5:41 AM

Is there any adaptation to seasickness/movement of water (i.e. people "getting their sea legs") or is that just looking at the horizon to stop being seasick? A lot of crew members don't get to stay on board in a place where they can constantly view the horizon, yet some manage to adapt regardless.

But wtf--this guy should've packed meclizine! Seasickness is no joke.

I've gotten more motion sick as I've aged. As a kid I could read in cars, go on countless roller coasters and not get sick. Now I can't even look at my phone in the passenger side without starting to feel ill. Wish I knew why that was.

by Anonymousreply 172June 4, 2021 5:56 AM

It's the opposite for me, R172, I got carsick all the time as a kid, and I've only been motion-sick as an adult once - during a storm on the Great Southern Ocean between South America and Antarctica, which hardly counts. I mean I've felt queasy many a time, but I've been able to look at the horizon and tell myself that I don't feel sick, and the queasy has gone away.

But again, a kayaker in swells over three feet high can't see much of the horizon.

by Anonymousreply 173June 4, 2021 6:10 AM

Why the dearth and brevity of posts? If he's hunkering down it's not like he's got a lot of other things to do.

He's totally drunk and his sponsors are trying to figure a way out of this mess while saving face. Maybe they'll fake a pirate story.

by Anonymousreply 174June 4, 2021 6:36 AM

A bit about seasickness:

Seasickness is a result of a conflict in the inner ear, where the human balance mechanism resides, and is caused by a vessel’s erratic motion on the water. Inside the cabin of a rocking boat, for example, the inner ear detects changes in both up-and-down and side-to-side acceleration as one’s body bobs along with the boat. But, since the cabin moves with the passenger, one’s eyes register a relatively stable scene. Agitated by this perceptual incongruity, the brain responds with a cascade of stress-related hormones that can ultimately lead to nausea, vomiting, and vertigo.

Additionally, an affected person’s symptoms can be magnified by the strong odors of things like diesel fumes and fish. Seasickness usually occurs in the first 12 to 24 hours after “setting sail,” and dissipates once the body acclimates to the ship's motion. It’s rare for anyone to get or stay ill beyond the first couple of days at sea—unless the vessel encounters really rough waves.

My father once told me, on the way to the European Front on the "Queen Mary," he was seasick every day, along with many other guys at the ship's railing!

Indeed, it was that and similar shared experiences during WWII that led to more extensive research of anti-nausea meds.

I just re-read the article I posted at (r40) and it has all the hallmarks of this adventure except catered to a Datalounge audience. How have I/we not heard about this on here? * Angela, our protagonist, who is 6"1, partially paralyzed (cane+wheelchair), shaves her head and puts up with no shit * She has a partner named DEB * She worked as a mechanic for SEARS and U-Haul, also was in the military *Sadly she died on her trip, whatever happened to her is vague and/or unknown

by Anonymousreply 209June 4, 2021 11:43 PM

R209 Whales.

by Anonymousreply 210June 5, 2021 12:55 AM

Well, r209, it actually seems pretty clear what happened to Angela from the article. It became necessary for her to get in the water to fix something. The autopsy says she drowned, and found only scrapes / bruising on one of her lower legs. The only unknown is what exactly caused her to be unable to get back in the boat that caused her to drown still tethered to it.

She does sound like an amazing life force.

by Anonymousreply 211June 5, 2021 1:16 AM

Still parked on his ass. Aren't high winds, gusts and big "swell" part of being on the high seas? How calm does it have to be for him to feel safe? I'm starting to think he's never gone any further than diddling around in the bay.

It stands to reason he's going to run into an awful lot of huge swells and winds during his journey. if he takes 4 days off every time that happens, his 60-70 day journey is going to end up being over double that.

Hopefully they are planning to send out some sharks with laser beams attached to their heads, and end this farce::

"Patience. Few more days of this. Building up til Monday. Trust with Val is building. Who would have known that those mornings I was lazy to get out of bed to go training were actually the best training I needed.

Wow. Huge wave passed over my entire kayak, smashing into the stern in a big noise. I was like "where is that demonic wave coming from??? I have mastered the action of sleeping so much that I'm exhausted to do it, so I sleep more."

by Anonymousreply 239June 5, 2021 4:23 PM

What is he doing to maintain his strength as he surfs the web and quaffs his vino? Serious question. Every day his arms and his core are getting weaker. When he finally gets back to paddling, after doing basically nothing for quite some time, he's going to be wiped out just after an hour or two, and so sore the next day that he won't likely be able to do much. if anything given this twat's "delicate condition".

by Anonymousreply 240June 5, 2021 4:31 PM

Oh for fuck's sake, a couple of days of rest doesn't make that much difference to someone who's at their peak fitness! Okay, to an Olympic athlete a couple of days of ill-timed rest may make the difference between the 100.00000% peak fitness that gets a gold medal, vs. the 99.9999999999% peak fitness that means coming in fourth. But this is a guy who's planned to take months at a super-long-term endurance sport, and that means rest days.

I can't believe how impatient you are. "ENTERTAIN US!", you scream, when a task that's supposed to take two months isn't done in a week. Although I admit, he should be spending his slow days posting nude shots instead of watching "Seinfeld", if he wants to keep the world interested.

by Anonymousreply 241June 5, 2021 4:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 242June 5, 2021 4:40 PM

r241 He's taking a 5 day break. In the middle of the bloody ocean. He's not resting a sore foot. Now there are murmurs of him starting back on Monday instead of Tuesday, but this is quite different from a day or two off. Also, I'm starting to wonder just how peak his fitness really is. He flaked out after day one with sea sickness, which OK, fair. Had a couple of good days, a wobbly day, and now this long period of inactivity.

As long as your first language is not English we forgive you.

by Anonymousreply 254June 5, 2021 9:09 PM

Only one more day before he starts paddling again! Can't wait!

by Anonymousreply 255June 6, 2021 10:40 AM

I wonder if he enjoys that so many people are following what he's up to. Maybe he's reading this thread and laughing his ass off. That's why he's not making any progress. These people should have video cameras on board, live filming every second for his fans.

by Anonymousreply 256June 6, 2021 11:31 AM

I can't wait for Bradley Cooper to play Cyril in the movie of this adventure.

by Anonymousreply 257June 6, 2021 11:39 AM

Does Uber Eats deliver out that way?

by Anonymousreply 258June 6, 2021 12:58 PM

R258 they could probably swim out to him.

by Anonymousreply 259June 6, 2021 1:06 PM

Well, he seems to be drifting oh-so-slowly back towards his route.

by Anonymousreply 260June 6, 2021 3:47 PM

I don’t think he’s going to make it.

by Anonymousreply 261June 6, 2021 3:50 PM

Oh, r257. You know it will be Tom Hanks!

by Anonymousreply 262June 6, 2021 4:10 PM

How many loads has Cyril jerked out while he's been on sabbatical?

by Anonymousreply 263June 6, 2021 4:49 PM

Does Bradley Cooper have a career anymore?

by Anonymousreply 264June 6, 2021 8:06 PM

His career is in better shape than James Franco's.

by Anonymousreply 265June 6, 2021 8:22 PM

Is it me, or does it look like he's actually moving today?

More likely the sponsors are fucking with the map to make it look like something is happening.

He may be dead in the boat and a frenzy of sharks are nudging it out to sea as they swarm (?)

by Anonymousreply 267June 6, 2021 8:34 PM

r266 I was wondering that too.

by Anonymousreply 268June 6, 2021 8:44 PM

r267 LOL nobody really knows! swimmed, swam, swum.

by Anonymousreply 269June 6, 2021 8:52 PM

There was a guy who paddled from Canada to the Amazon. Then he paddled all the way to the Arctic. I forget his name, but he wrote a few books.

by Anonymousreply 270June 6, 2021 8:56 PM

According to the link at r266, he aborted the mission! The kayak is still adrift, which is why it looks like it's moving.

[quote]The Search & Rescue operation was then set up very quickly and I was hoisted up that night around midnight by the US Coast Guard, whom I thank very much for their professionalism and efficiency. I am therefore now safe, on land, and we are studying with my support team, on the one hand the solutions for recovering my kayak which is adrift, and on the other hand all the scenarios for the future.

by Anonymousreply 271June 6, 2021 8:57 PM

Well, that's a surprise.

by Anonymousreply 272June 6, 2021 9:05 PM

So long, chum!

by Anonymousreply 275June 6, 2021 9:32 PM

Earlier in the thread when he was having serious problems on day 3 I questioned if he would last a week. He lasted a week.

by Anonymousreply 276June 6, 2021 9:43 PM

R273, he never made it within 500 miles of Catalina.

by Anonymousreply 277June 6, 2021 9:59 PM

How does he have an access to the internet that far away into the ocean

by Anonymousreply 278June 6, 2021 10:06 PM

Awww, I was rooting for him.

by Anonymousreply 279June 6, 2021 10:07 PM

Here is the full post. So 80k plus god knows what is just floating out there. I'm curious how they will retrieve it.

He says at the end he's still determined to make it happen. His sponsors have other ideas I'm sure. ....................................... "Yesterday's day had started well ... Immobilized under the sea anchor for 3 days to let pass safely a period of strong winds accompanied by a deterioration of the sea state, the conditions aboard my ocean kayak were uncomfortable but within the limits that we had anticipated.

As predicted by my weather router, the conditions deteriorated progressively to reach winds of 30-35 knots, gusts to 45 knots, for a sea increasingly formed with troughs of 4.5 meters, the waves breaking on the cabin of my kayak with an impressive noise. However, my sea anchor was playing its stabilizing role well and the situation remained manageable.

This changed unfavorably yesterday at 9 p.m. when my ground crew told me that they had lost the AIS signal for 3 hours. I then notice that my navigation system has lost the GPS signal and couldn’t recover it. As we were working with my team on a solution to this electronic problem, the general behavior of my kayak suddenly changed, which I immediately attributed to a sea anchor damage. In a few moments my kayak was positioned almost parallel to the axis of the waves, and I found myself violently tossed from side to side, along with all the equipment that was stored in the cabin.

Attempts to get out to more accurately assess the condition of the sea anchor and to resolve the issue were unsuccessful and resulted in water entering my cabin. I didn't know if I had lost the anchor or if it had collapsed on itself, but it was sure that the recovery line had once again become caught in the rudder. In the weather conditions at the time, and even attached to my lifeline, it was out of the question to take the risk of getting into the water as I had done 2 days before.

As night had just fallen, it was clear that the situation was not sustainable: Inability to eat, drink, sleep, communicate easily with my team ashore. With my land support crew, we then reported the situation I was in to the US Coast Guard to jointly explore all possible options.

Being still quite close to land (60nm) and considering the deteriorating weather conditions which could have made a rescue operation more complex and dangerous for all in the days to come, I made the very difficult decision to request an evacuation.

The Search & Rescue operation was then set up very quickly and I was hoisted up that night around midnight by the US Coast Guard, whom I thank very much for their professionalism and efficiency.

I am therefore now safe, on land, and we are studying with my support team, on the one hand the solutions for recovering my kayak which is adrift, and on the other hand all the scenarios for the future.

I would like to thank all those who are passionate about and follow this crossing day by day. I knew from the start that it would be a difficult thing, and I am sure that it was also this commitment that attracted you to my project. All the preparation for this expedition was made under the sign of risk control and safety, and it is also this control that guided my choices last night.

Great joys arise from our challenges and the ambition we put into them, and when there are great difficulties, it is because the challenge is great!

Morale is good, I still have my passion for this adventure intact, and I am still determined to make it happen... I won’t give up!!! #Life is an adventure"

by Anonymousreply 280June 6, 2021 10:07 PM

[quote] What’s his damage? The guy is clearly not playing with a full deck.

Adrenaline junkies. See also Alex Honnold. It must be hell to be in a relationship with one of those type of guys -- it's only a matter of time before they splat out.

by Anonymousreply 281June 6, 2021 10:08 PM

What a fucking waste of time, money and resources. I want to know how much ocean experience this guy honestly had under his belt before he conned these sponsors. The whole think frankly stinks to me, I can't totally put my finger on it, but there was something from the get go that sounded like it was going to end this way. In a rescue. Genuinely needed? Or likely not? I know my pick.

Remember, this guy had to be cajoled out of bed each morning just to train on the SF Bay. Did they really think he had the stones, let alone the ability for this?

I hope he has to pay for his rescue as someone else mentioned upthread.

by Anonymousreply 282June 6, 2021 10:21 PM

I called it upthread, that the Coast Guard would have to come rescue him. Although I gave it 10 days, so I was slightly optimistic. I hope the Coast Guard sends him a bill for the rescue, I don't care for my taxpayer dollars to go towards rescuing this doof on what was obviously a doomed mission.

by Anonymousreply 283June 6, 2021 10:31 PM

iMe too, i was worried for him from the outset. I'm glad he called in the cavalry and didn't;t try to be a hero when he could tell it wasn't going to work.

by Anonymousreply 284June 6, 2021 10:35 PM

He keeps talking about “his team” and “his land crew ashore.”

Why did none of these people tell him his harebrained scheme was retarded from the start? Or are they all members of a junior high science club, just advising for extra credit?

by Anonymousreply 285June 6, 2021 10:50 PM

All joking aside, with the communications glitches and his already uncomfortable situation just days in, I'm glad he abandoned the journey.

by Anonymousreply 286June 6, 2021 11:00 PM

Here's a boater who successfully did what this man could not. Not exactly a kayaker, but he's much hotter, sane, and builds a house for a bird he befriends along the way.

by Anonymousreply 290June 6, 2021 11:50 PM

I hate people like this - they will cost hundreds of thousands in rescue efforts ot find him when he hits the deep ocean and dissapears. If you have a death wish, just jump off a cliff.

by Anonymousreply 291June 7, 2021 12:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 304June 7, 2021 3:27 PM

When is Attempt #2 happening?

by Anonymousreply 305June 7, 2021 4:16 PM

He's going to capitalize on this little adventure by being a motivational speaker? Just my luck, I'll end up trapped at some conference with him as the keynote. He'll drone on and on about perseverance and forging ahead against all odds and I'll be fighting sleep.

by Anonymousreply 306June 7, 2021 5:02 PM

When and if they get his kayak back, Rose.

But there's a big IF there, because if the weather conditions ruined this trip, and the forecast looked good enough for a try... when is a better forecast going to happen? That's the thing about sea kayaking, it's only really doable in calm conditions, and if this lovely June weather isn't going to be good enough... what will be?

by Anonymousreply 307June 7, 2021 5:07 PM

I still see his boat on the tracker! Maybe it will eventually get to HI on its own.

by Anonymousreply 310June 8, 2021 5:43 AM

Sheesh. Somebody needs to tie this kook up. Or just let him drown.

by Anonymousreply 311June 8, 2021 5:45 AM

He sure looks well fed, glowing and spiffy for someone rescued INCHES from finishing season 5 of Seinfeld.

They couldn't have arrived just a half hour later? So inconsiderate.

by Anonymousreply 312June 8, 2021 5:53 AM

The Kayak is exactly on course at the moment.

Go Kayak! You are free of your burden!

by Anonymousreply 313June 8, 2021 5:57 AM

Why are people so upset about rescuer workers rescuing and the attendant costs? -- it's what they do and they're funded to do it. Many fires are started due to stupidity, yet we fund fire departments and don't freak out when those fires are put out.

by Anonymousreply 314June 8, 2021 6:17 AM

Extreme adventure treks like this are the equivalent of arson.

by Anonymousreply 315June 8, 2021 6:21 AM

Exactly. This is deliberately putting yourself in a dangerous situation, the equivalent of arson, not an accidental fire. And he says he plans to do it again this month!

by Anonymousreply 316June 8, 2021 6:54 AM

He needs to give it a year or so, maybe do some shorter trips and build up his experience.

by Anonymousreply 317June 8, 2021 6:59 AM

At R309: that very gay male news anchor seemed to be flirting with Cyril.

by Anonymousreply 318June 8, 2021 7:02 AM

Fires are dangerous to everyone. An idiot in a kayak in the Pacific Ocean is only dangerous to himself and there is no point in risking anybody else's life. Or spending a dime of public funds.

by Anonymousreply 319June 8, 2021 7:10 AM

I agree with r314.

As long as there are people there will always be rescue organizations. It’s the nature of the beast.

by Anonymousreply 320June 8, 2021 7:17 AM

He wouldn't even have been first! So what was the point?

by Anonymousreply 321June 8, 2021 9:38 AM

He's getting lots of attention, just as he intended all along.

by Anonymousreply 322June 8, 2021 10:41 AM

When do we get to part 8?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 323June 8, 2021 11:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 329June 8, 2021 2:25 PM

Go big or go home, Cyril! You should try a solo kayak to Antarctica next! What could possibly go wrong?

by Anonymousreply 330June 8, 2021 3:45 PM

He could make a big name for himself taking on popular challenges around the world and failing at all of them.

by Anonymousreply 331June 8, 2021 3:52 PM

Too bad Trump isn't still president, Cyril would be a shoo-in for leading the President's Council on Physical Fitness!

by Anonymousreply 332June 8, 2021 3:59 PM

He encountered big waves. No one could have anticipated that.

by Anonymousreply 333June 8, 2021 4:00 PM

Yes. Usually the ocean’s smooth as glass from side to side!

Global warming probably changed it all during his trip :(

by Anonymousreply 334June 8, 2021 4:08 PM

The sherpas will carry him up Everest so he'll have a great success and be called a hero.

by Anonymousreply 335June 8, 2021 4:16 PM

Just no. We have enough to deal with.

by Anonymousreply 336June 8, 2021 4:49 PM

If this idiot has $80,000 to spend on a Kayak then he needs for repay the government for the cost of his rescue and a bonus for the people who rescued him. I am sick of these idiots taking chances and expecting other people to risk their live to rescue them and other people to subsidize the cost. Fuck him.

In honor of the lesbian who died at sea, while this lazy fleabag basks in his loser glory. I say we rename the kayak Lesbian Seagull, start a Twitter account and post about our journey to Hawaii. It would be beautiful if the thing really did make it to one of the islands. Of course with a ton of seagulls at the helm and other sea friends perched on, in and swimming alongside.

R344

Dear lord

by Anonymousreply 346June 9, 2021 9:00 AM

R344 This guy might do it, given that he's surged Maverick's and crossed the Atlantic on a hydrofoil. A few swells aren't going to bother him.

by Anonymousreply 347June 9, 2021 9:26 AM

Yeah a hydrofoil is a BIT different than rowing across.

by Anonymousreply 348June 9, 2021 9:30 AM

Okay, but the hydrofoil guy will need a new thread.

by Anonymousreply 349June 9, 2021 11:25 AM

That's right, R349. Let him get his own damned thread. This one is Cyril's.

by Anonymousreply 350June 9, 2021 1:17 PM

Have Cyril and Hydrofoil guy hooked up before?

by Anonymousreply 351June 9, 2021 2:05 PM

Yes, they shared a night of passion after hooking up their crafts together at a dock in Sausalito—until Cyril became seasick and they had to stop.

by Anonymousreply 352June 9, 2021 5:13 PM

Cyril and Hydrofoil guy enjoyed some docking!

HEY-O! (Remember to tip your waiters, ladies and gentlemen!)

by Anonymousreply 353June 9, 2021 9:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 354June 10, 2021 1:54 AM

Well what can you expect from a guy named Cyril?

by Anonymousreply 355June 10, 2021 2:44 AM

So is there a new thread for the new guy?

by Anonymousreply 356June 10, 2021 1:38 PM

Damn, you whores are fickle! Already ready to abandon Cyril for this Hydrofoil dude.

by Anonymousreply 357June 10, 2021 2:26 PM

Well, Cyril is a dud.

by Anonymousreply 358June 10, 2021 5:09 PM

Lesbian Seagull does not appear to be moving. I thought the anchor broke. Caught up in some sea garbage? Or maybe they aren't updating the map any longer?

Perhaps they turned the transponder off in order not to embarrass that fat ass.

Well THAT is no fun. Turn it back on!

by Anonymousreply 359June 10, 2021 8:31 PM

Hydrofoil guy, Chris, has now made it past Monterey Bay and Kayak guy's farthest position. He's heading South to around LA when the wind current s turn East and lead pretty nicely to Hawaii.

by Anonymousreply 360June 11, 2021 12:07 AM

r360 Is there a tracker link for him r360? Rooting for you Chris!

by Anonymousreply 361June 11, 2021 12:51 AM

R361 If you follow the link in R354 and scroll down there's a tracker map that shows his progress on a map with the winds. Things look pretty good.

Looks like he may be planning to cross the entire Pacific, but with stops. California to Hawaii would be the biggest stretch of no land, though the weather's more dangerous in the western Pacific.

by Anonymousreply 362June 11, 2021 2:12 AM

Thanks so much r362!

by Anonymousreply 363June 11, 2021 2:16 AM

So, hydrofoil guy didn't hydrofoil across the Atlantic, he paddle-boarded across the Atlantic. He mostly paddled at night because it was easier for various reasons. Hydrofoiling is a piece of cake for someone like that.

Well, no, seriously, looking at the maps, the trickiest part is at the beginning where he has to head down the California coast without getting smashed into Big Sur and then catch the tradewinds south of Los Angeles. Once he catches those, it's pretty smooth sailing if he doesn't run into major weather conditions.

His boat is tiny--not enough room for him to fully stretch out in his cabin.

by Anonymousreply 364June 11, 2021 7:58 PM

Things have fallen apart, he had to be rescued by the Coast Guard, and then later found his drifting kayak and had it towed back to Santa Cruz.

by Anonymousreply 365June 11, 2021 10:07 PM

Isn't there always the good possibility of a major storm with certain death?

by Anonymousreply 366June 11, 2021 10:14 PM

r365 are you talking about Cyrill the Kayaker or Chris the Hydrofoil guy?
