It sounds like Warner made the right move holding it so people can see it in theaters

The trailer looks great

by Anonymousreply 2May 21, 2021 4:27 PM

Steven Spielberg must be hyperventilating.

by Anonymousreply 3May 21, 2021 4:28 PM

Well, it don't look like Shaker Heights..

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2021 4:46 PM

On the trailer, I didn't expect to like that. But I did, tremendously.

And yes, Spielberg is probably reducing the font size on his name on the West Side Story credits.

by Anonymousreply 5May 21, 2021 4:55 PM

The opening is at Tribeca FF using the United Palace Theater in WH.

I've seen a few things here and they've done an amazing restoration.

I never miss a Jimmy Smits musical.

by Anonymousreply 7May 21, 2021 6:10 PM

So, this Hamilton meets Puerto Rican West Side story disaster got a good review? It looks awful.

by Anonymousreply 8May 21, 2021 6:13 PM

I’m confused, HBO says it comes out simultaneously on June 11, why are there reviews already?

by Anonymousreply 9May 21, 2021 7:44 PM

Because they screened the movie early for critics to build buzz, you freaking dumbass

by Anonymousreply 10May 21, 2021 7:52 PM

Just saw this today at a preview screening. Wow.

Beautifully photographed and choreographed.

by Anonymousreply 11June 7, 2021 7:06 AM

Most film reviews now are based on social narrative and not quality of film.

by Anonymousreply 12June 7, 2021 7:11 AM

They released the first eight-minute number. Looks fun and Anthony Ramos is a charmer.

[quote] Most film reviews now are based on social narrative and not quality of film.

That's been true since Roger Ebert went off the deep end after Gene Siskel died.

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2021 7:17 AM

This was posted last month on the theatre threads. Meh, little story, no protagonist, and Anthony is dull.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2021 7:17 AM

So is Warner Bros. as unscrupulous as Disney or have critics just forgotten how to tell a good musical from a bad one since they have been so few and far between over the last 50 years?

by Anonymousreply 16June 7, 2021 7:20 AM

The days of reviewers like Pauline Kael are long gone.

by Anonymousreply 17June 7, 2021 7:21 AM

[quote]So is Warner Bros. as unscrupulous as Disney or have critics just forgotten how to tell a good musical from a bad one since they have been so few and far between over the last 50 years?

Well, they saw "Cats," so ...

by Anonymousreply 18June 7, 2021 7:22 AM

[quote] The days of reviewers like Pauline Kael are long gone.

So are the days of movies that warranted that level of scrutiny.

by Anonymousreply 19June 7, 2021 7:25 AM

As if anyone would dare give this woke movie anything but raves. The reviewers don't want to be hunted down and called racists for saying Miranda's shit all sounds the same and the movie is obnoxious. Everyone gets a trophy! It's just easier that way.

by Anonymousreply 20June 7, 2021 8:17 AM

Don’t believe the prepared hype. It’s loud and boring. Anthony Ramos’ appeal escapes me. The critics will fawn all over this wokefest.

by Anonymousreply 21June 10, 2021 1:41 PM

It'll definitely get an award of some type for Lin Manuel Miranda...the Academy is precumming at this point to grant him his EGOT.

by Anonymousreply 22June 10, 2021 1:48 PM

Darren Criss just posted a nine minute rant about how perfect it is. He said the same thing about A Star is Born so take it with a grain of salt.

by Anonymousreply 23June 10, 2021 1:52 PM

Why is the Grandmother Cuban, that seems random?

by Anonymousreply 24June 10, 2021 2:05 PM

I might see it.

by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2021 8:37 PM

If it’s Lin-Manuel Miranda two things are true: It will be praised to the heaven, and it will be total shit.

by Anonymousreply 26June 11, 2021 8:43 PM

*heavens (Heavens!)

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2021 8:43 PM

I will never see this film. A bunch of tired Mexicans doing flash mob dances and lip synching an autotuned soundtrack. And every interview with the cast has been nauseating Oprah shit: "It really fed my spirit to connect with these souls and be enveloped in the wave of love that generated from their hearts and share our journey that seemed pre-ordained or Fate or something, just something magical yet so real and true and nourishing. I just didn't want it to end, and y'know it won't because we are all connected, we share the same DNA now, and we just want the audience to join our movement because it is a movement of hearts and souls and minds and..."

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2021 10:36 PM

Oprah said that? Is she one of the producers?

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2021 10:39 PM

Do they teach a class in how to speak the shit quoted in R28? It seems like nebulous, meaningless bullshit is how the entire woke movement speaks. Not so much an echo chamber as an echo pit filled with crap.

by Anonymousreply 30June 11, 2021 10:44 PM

The lead guy looks dirty

by Anonymousreply 31June 11, 2021 10:47 PM

Do they all have dirty arms? I won'r be seeing it.

For jean cutoffs and t-shirts? Lol.

by Anonymousreply 33June 12, 2021 12:50 AM

I don't doubt the movie's good reviews, but Lin-Manuel Miranda can suck it. He's the son of an upper class consultant and clinical psychologist, so it's not like like he grew up in some fucking run-down ghetto making coffee at a bodega. It's really no different than Kim Kardashian making a musical about Armenian genocide.

by Anonymousreply 34June 12, 2021 1:34 AM

R34 His Father worked for Ed fucking Koch.

by Anonymousreply 35June 12, 2021 1:41 AM

I loved the In The Heights movie. It’s a nice bauble. Beautifully directed, the best since Chicago. The songs aren’t particularly memorable but are precursors to the genius that is Hamilton.

A nice way to spend 3 hours

by Anonymousreply 36June 12, 2021 3:50 AM

No one cares about the oscars anymore. I hope they get the same treatment as the golden globes and get relegated to a youtube live show.

by Anonymousreply 37June 12, 2021 3:54 AM

R28 Hollywood has been hyping this film to be THE definitive Latino rep film like Black Panther was to black people and Crazy Rich Asians was to Asians.

Most of the people in the film seeming are carribean in origin, no Mexicans but they of course will Claim and credit anything that speaks an once of Spanish.

by Anonymousreply 38June 12, 2021 3:54 AM

R36 Are you saying Miranda's a genius or Hamilton is genius?

by Anonymousreply 39June 12, 2021 3:56 AM

It's three fucking hours long?? Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 40June 12, 2021 6:54 AM

Any memorable songs ?

by Anonymousreply 41June 12, 2021 6:58 AM

Have there been any memorable songs from modern musicals?

by Anonymousreply 42June 12, 2021 7:03 AM

I thought it sounded awfully Hamilton-esque too.

by Anonymousreply 43June 12, 2021 7:12 AM

These are the two big songs.

The NYT review was pretty mixed even thought it was "critic's pick". I heard another mixed review on the radio this aft. From the NYT:

It’s a great party — replete with fireworks, dance floor blowouts, kisses, tears, loud arguments, more kisses and more tears. Which isn’t the same as a great movie. There are some dead spots in the story, and scenes, including musical numbers, that are adequate when they should be dazzling. Still, in spite of a longish running time I really didn’t want it to end. Chu knows how to show everyone a good time. The nightclub, swimming pool and beauty shop scenes are joyful and welcoming, even if, as cinema, they aren’t especially memorable or original. The dynamic choreography, by Christopher Scott, is ill served by the editing and camera movements, which hack graceful and athletic motion into a hectic collage of faces and limbs.

by Anonymousreply 45June 12, 2021 7:23 AM

[quote] Most of the people in the film seeming are carribean in origin

They're certainly in demand in my country of Australia, R38.

Woke advertisers and government departments are determined to be woke. But they can't find indigenous Australians willing to be models so they use curly-haired Caribbean instead.

by Anonymousreply 46June 12, 2021 7:37 AM

Loved it. Suck it, haters.

by Anonymousreply 47June 12, 2021 7:52 AM

EMPIRE Helen O'Hara-'Like a shot of summer holiday straight to the arm, this will have you shymmying out of the cinema and hugging all your neighbours' Sounds awful!

by Anonymousreply 48June 12, 2021 8:19 AM

Ugh rap crap

by Anonymousreply 49June 12, 2021 8:25 AM

I started to watch it last night and while it’s well filmed, I just hate Lin Manuel’s musical style.

by Anonymousreply 50June 12, 2021 9:40 AM

[quote] Have there been any memorable songs from modern musicals?

I can't remember any. Most of the ones of the last 20-30 years haven't gotten the number of cover versions their predecessors got that helped keep them alive between revivals and movie/TV adaptations.

by Anonymousreply 51June 12, 2021 10:53 AM

In the Heights?!? More like in the depths, of disappear!

by Anonymousreply 52June 12, 2021 2:17 PM

I want Ramos to sit on my face.

by Anonymousreply 53June 12, 2021 2:22 PM

[Quote] I started to watch it last night and while it’s well filmed, I just hate Lin Manuel’s musical style.

You mean hiphop/rap? I love that it’s a new way to deliver big musical. Most of his songs are traditional musical style, but the entry into them is rap.

Very original and timely

by Anonymousreply 54June 12, 2021 2:53 PM

Loved the play. Cant wait to see the movie.

by Anonymousreply 55June 12, 2021 3:01 PM

Blurgh.

It’s fun and was directed brilliant. The choreography, especially in the Latin club, is amazing.

I’m sure they were trying to emulate the West Side Story Gym dance sequence

by Anonymousreply 57June 13, 2021 12:59 PM

Ramos was on CBS Sunday Morning. I still can’t tell if he’s attractive or talented or just very, very lucky.

by Anonymousreply 58June 13, 2021 1:59 PM

Great body.

Christ, is every song just as same as the last one? I think they could cut about four numbers and streamline this bitch. And I’m sure it’s a gay male thing, but I can barely tell the two female leads apart and I’m never sure which one is which and thought they were the same person at the start.

by Anonymousreply 60June 14, 2021 6:58 PM

No BP and no BO In 3 weeks of released it made less than $25 million which is less than Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway made in 3 weeks. Known in Hollywood as In the Red!

by Anonymousreply 61June 28, 2021 5:48 AM

[quote] I can barely tell the two female leads apart and I’m never sure which one is which and thought they were the same person at the start.

They were chosen because they look generic and fit the targeted marketing formula

by Anonymousreply 62June 28, 2021 5:59 AM

How far did the viewership drop this weekend?

by Anonymousreply 63June 28, 2021 11:24 AM

My brother didn’t realize there were two different female leads until half the movie was over. The female leads were both quite slim. One of them should have been more full figured to create more contrast between them,

by Anonymousreply 64June 28, 2021 11:40 AM

'The event of the summer' has fallen into non existence Oscar will forget.

by Anonymousreply 65October 7, 2021 3:52 AM

It did better than half the movies that will end up with Best Picture nominations this year.

by Anonymousreply 66October 7, 2021 3:54 AM

R66 Did better critically?

by Anonymousreply 67October 7, 2021 4:32 AM

[quote] I can barely tell the two female leads apart and I’m never sure which one is which and thought they were the same person at the start.

Does one of them being black give you a clue?

by Anonymousreply 68October 7, 2021 5:04 AM

Black, black?

by Anonymousreply 69October 7, 2021 6:00 AM

Yes, there was a black couple and a LatinX couple yet people were complaining that there were no Afro-LatinXes in the movie.
