A Fat Girl’s Diatribe Against the Theatre Community

by Abigail Mowbray, Guest Editorial, Onstage Blog

The theatrical industry is, on the surface, seen as an inclusive environment full of openly accepting members who desire to experience the same kind of public appreciation an eighth-grade version of myself so desperately craved. As a young artist, it has only taken me less than a handle of auditions and feedback to realize that theatre was not the fat girl’s sport.

If you speak to the choreographer, they’d say that it’s visually unappealing to have an uneven amount of “heavier” people on the stage than the other. If you speak to the costume designer, they say that it’s more difficult to create flattering costumes for the “common figure” a fat girl carries. If you look in the ensemble of a majority of running musicals, you will rarely find anyone that doesn’t fit an “average” body type to the production staff’s discretion.

The mentality that fat girls are not an acceptable “type” of a performer not only infiltrates the professional and community circles but has now trickled into high school theatre as well.

During my high school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, where I was playing Miss Dorothy, we were learning the steps for the “Nutcracker Suite,” and the choreographer mapped out a lift in the middle of the dance break involving myself and Millie where we both sit on our male cast members’ shoulders. After multiple attempts to master the lift, the choreographer looked at me, in front of the entire cast, and says “Can we get a smaller girl over here?”

Because two high school boys couldn’t carry a 175 lbs curvaceous junior in high school, the choreographer chose to replace me with the smallest female member of the ensemble cast.

After experiencing similar treatment with the costuming department during measurements and costume fittings, I was fed up. Once the choreographer ran the lift with my replacement, I looked at her and said “Replacing me with the tiniest actress in our company does absolutely nothing for my confidence. I hope you’re happy with the decision you’ve made of compromising the integrity of your actor’s performance instead of your choreography.”

Once I made such a bold statement, I walked out of the rehearsal space into the dressing room where I was tracked down by the director and calmed down to re-enter the stage.

While the aforementioned example seems like petty high school drama, situations even more extreme happen every day in conference rooms surrounded by production teams of people that don’t live up to the external expectations they hold their anticipated cast members to. I feel like the theatrical industry is no place for a fat girl because a fat girl isn't what the public wants- at what least the paying public wants. Well, I’m sick and tired of it.

I’m tired of being typecast as the “fat best friend”.

We, the “fat girls” of the theatre community no longer desire to be quieted by being thrown roles like “Tracy Turnblad” in Hairspray or “Bridget” in Bring It On. We ask for the opportunity to portray every actress's dream role. Here’s to fat “Elphaba’s” in Wicked, fat “Christine’s” in Phantom of the Opera, and fat “Reginas” in Mean Girls.

Is that asking too much?

The director spared you the embarrassment that would have resulted had the audience seen those boys struggle to carry you on their shoulders, Miss Curvaceous.

[quote] Here’s to fat “Elphaba’s” in Wicked, fat “Christine’s” in Phantom of the Opera, and fat “Reginas” in Mean Girls.

[quote] Is that asking too much?

Yes, toots, it is.

Christine Daae is a dancer with the opera ballet in the 19th century; Regina George is the most popular and sexually desirable girl at her high school.

They are not fat girls and would seem ridiculous if they were.

What bizarre bit of wokeness now has overweight actresses acting like Rosa Parks and demanding to be cast in roles where one might be used to seeing someone with a lovely figure?

How did they miss the "aspirational" allure of stage and screen shows where people enjoy seeing beautiful people! Show biz ain't some sort of taxpayer-funded fairness enterprise where the inclusion of obese women is strictly mandated by "fairness" and "representation"?! Many actors and actresses work like hell to maintain a nice figure and don't sit on their fat behinds eating Funyons all day!

Why does anyone think they're owed something?

by Anonymousreply 12May 12, 2021 5:05 AM

Speak for yourself, R10.

[quote] Because two high school boys couldn’t carry a 175 lbs curvaceous junior in high school, the choreographer chose to replace me with the smallest female member of the ensemble cast.

Did she want them to drop her? Injure themselves? This is a ridiculous complaint. If they couldn't lift her, they couldn't lift her,* and obviously, the director was not going to risk actual bodily damage to a performer in order to spare this blogger some damage to her ego. *Hey, maybe the boys were 90-pound weaklings who could have been replaced by bigger, stronger cast members, but if that were the case, she should have said so.

I don't know shit about the characters and plot of Phantom, but I agree with r4 about Regina George. No, she wouldn't work as a fat girl. Being skinny and conventionally attractive are qualities pretty much inherent to being a high school mean girl. Hell, the whole idea behind a "mean girl" is you are liked for your looks and image regardless of how awful your personality. Fat girls, in a teenager's eyes, do not have that kind of looks and image.

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2021 5:18 AM

This is like when they did that awful TV reboot of "Heathers" and they made Heather into a fat trans SJW.

by Anonymousreply 22May 12, 2021 5:28 AM

To be fair, those casting opportunities really should be going to Trans POC and to suggest otherwise would be LITERAL VIOLENCE.

Back to the issue at hand. If you don’t want to be the fat girl then stop being the fat girl. And stop being upset that people wouldn’t want to pay to see you, it’s their money and their eyeballs. Furthermore, stop trying to be the lead because you’re not lead material. No one should be forced to slow down just because you can’t keep up.

by Anonymousreply 23May 12, 2021 5:54 AM

I sympathize with her feeling excluded and unwanted because of her weight. There are however countless women in theatre who are not naturally thin but work their asses off to keep in shape. Maybe they have forgone junk food, or they wake up at 6 in the morning to exercise or they count every calorie they put in their bodies - my point is it would be unfair to such people to give roles that they worked so hard for away to someone unqualified just to be politically correct. Where do you draw the line? That's something to wonder about.

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2021 6:11 AM

R16 agreed. The amount of entitlement necessary... It would be dangerous and stupid to lift someone the way a slim dancer would be lifted, for both. How can you disregard others' health you actively endanger? Feelings were hurt? Sounds better than a slipped disc to me.

by Anonymousreply 29May 12, 2021 6:12 AM

Barbara Cook wrote about "looking decidedly more zaftig than the ideal Broadway ingenue. Whenever my nerves ... got the better of me I'd order a sack full of those little White Castle hamburgers. The next night I'd do the same. I was a little too big to begin with, and I started getting bigger. And then I heard about a doctor who could help ... and I was introduced to Dexedrine."

by Anonymousreply 31May 12, 2021 6:25 AM

"The theatrical industry is, on the surface, seen as an inclusive environment full of openly accepting members..."

Where the hell did she get the idea that the theater industry is inclusive and accepting???

by Anonymousreply 32May 12, 2021 6:47 AM

She and Man 6 from "Hamilton" should form their own acting company.

by Anonymousreply 33May 12, 2021 6:51 AM

I’m sorry that she’s fat, but she’s chosen to make her living in a business that depends on putting asses in seats. The fact that most paying customers would rather see (all else being equal, with exceptions for specific roles) in-shape people rather than fat doughy people does not constitute some injustice being done to fat people. Producers have bills to pay, and casting fatsos as Romeo & Juliet is probably a good bankruptcy strategy.

There’s always fat-centric porn, if she really wants to monetize her flab.

Some people see beautiful, curvy women bravely promoting self-acceptance. I see ill-disciplined, slovenly hogs who can't stop eating and refuse to exercise.

Who's right? It doesn't matter, but I will not pay to see obese women on magazine covers, fashion runways, or as leading ladies.

The theatre is not there so she can "experience the same kind of public appreciation an eighth-grade version of myself so desperately craved". That she thinks that it is is problematic and entitled as fuck.

Her colleagues probably work their asses off staying in shape. What's her problem? Lose the weight or stfu.

by Anonymousreply 42May 12, 2021 8:45 AM

It does sound as if she has accepted reality, R42, although she does not like it.

by Anonymousreply 43May 12, 2021 8:49 AM

If she acts as badly as she writes, that may be a weightier (pun fully intended) explanation for her lack of success.

"A HANDLE of auditions"? "An AMOUNT of “heavier” people"?

by Anonymousreply 44May 12, 2021 9:05 AM

r44 I like collective nouns. Perhaps a rebuff of auditions and a blubber of heavier people?

by Anonymousreply 45May 12, 2021 9:11 AM

She’s embarrassing herself with petulant whingeing.

Though I feel her pain. I’m not obese but I am painfully shy, awkward and somewhat autistic. It was made clear to me when studying theatre for BA that, no matter my interest and enthusiasm for acting, these traits rendered me unsuitable for a career in stage performance (really, only Daryl Hannah & Liv Tyler have ever made that work). This upset me, but I came around to the idea that it was realistic and sound advice coming from a place of tough love. Trying to make it in the business being as I am would have ended in bitter tears, at best.

Looking back, I say “fair enough, and thanks for telling me before I had to find out the hard way in my own.” Turns out I’m a born writer/conceptual researcher, and far more interested in music than plays or film in any event. Sometimes criticism is benevolent, and meant to guide you back to your path.

There’s other life to live, and hundreds of other jobs in the Arts that don’t call for being looked at and living up to a certain physical standard type. Anyway, the market for actors is oversaturated, so there’ll be less competition for other work where creative minds are sorely needed.

by Anonymousreply 46May 12, 2021 10:21 AM

If she transitions she'll be accepted everywhere and she can eat to her heart's content.

by Anonymousreply 47May 12, 2021 10:31 AM

Be a comedienne; fat girls seem to do well in this role & they're used to being funny

by Anonymousreply 56May 12, 2021 12:08 PM

The director definitely could've been more discreet by speaking to her directly, instead of doing that in front of everyone. They messed up by casting her in a role in the first place. I'm not saying those boys should've had to lift her because that's ridiculous, but it would be like the cheer coach picking a 175lb flyer ahead of time, as if size doesn't factor into the role.

She could've had a good point if she didn't use that as an example. I feel for younger women/ girls these days because there's something environmental causing heaviness. The only reason it has become more noticeable in girls, is biological differences. Females hold more fat by design. Idk if I'd birth control (they push that on young girls before having sex), food, lifestyle, or what, but something is going on because weight aside, people have gotten larger in general, in a short time span (look at averages in height from 50-100 yrs ago. Look at the size of babies born.)

I know people bring up estrogen and it's blame is on food hormones, but there's a chemical in plastic that mimics estrogen [bisphenol A (BPA)] and leaks into food, drink, and the ground. Unfortunately it's rarely discussed.

by Anonymousreply 67May 12, 2021 1:06 PM

Theatre and movies are about giving beauty and fantasy to the public. Handsome men for the ladies to sigh over and gorgeous women for the men. You cannot change what people find attractive.

Next, fat women are going to tell designers they need to hire fat women for the runway...thus defeating the purpose of it altogether which is to make the clothes look good and sell the dream to the buyers (rich skinny women).

It occurred to me a few times reading it could be a parody.

by Anonymousreply 68May 12, 2021 1:15 PM

R20 Change the piece to suit the performer? Why have dancers at all? Just have a bunch of fat girls on stage, eating or something.

Isn’t the point of theatre to show talented people who can perform the role better than anyone else? If it’s a dance role requiring lifting, you need someone who can perform.

Toughen up cupcake. I once lost the role of Merlin in "Camelot" because I was too much like Endora. When I then auditioned for the bit part of Knight 2, I didn't walk manly enough, so that didn't happen either. Everybody can't be everything.

by Anonymousreply 73May 12, 2021 2:03 PM

The fat girl's rant about theatre raises a few points about the unreal fantasies about life that now afflict post-modern First World civilisation: the increasingly common assumption that there are no limits to what anyone can do if they only put their minds to it, that old age can be denied, and that death is "optional".

Another is that lowering the bar to excellence to make everyone feel good isn't bad, but rewarding those who show excellence for it is bad.

This is particularly true in the arts, where the claim of "subjectivity" can be used more easily to bend otherwise obvious boundaries. E.g., classical ballet is a ruthless discipline and the competition fierce. I'm sure this girl also thinks there is no reason in the world why someone like her shouldn't get the lead in "Giselle" - the fact that the eponymous heroine is frail and dies of a broken/failing heart in the first act, and that in the second act she appears as a wraith who has to appear to float over the stage, and whose partner has to lift her over his head several times and do a great deal of partnering and carrying, is immaterial. This girl would say we're just not used to seeing dancers who look like her in those sorts of parts.

The argument that a big heavy girl who weighs 175lbs, is 1) simply unsuited to producing the illusion required by the part, and 2) will require an Olympic bodybuilder as a partner, will be rejected. Even taller ballet dancers with the otherwise required "look" are usually not given the lead in "Giselle" - instead, very good slightly taller dancers are more often give Myrtha, the imperious malign Queen of the Wilis, of the second act - she has to have an aura of command, and her opening solos are extremely demanding.

It's the way the thing works.

The push toward lowering all bars to be "inclusive" is poor preparation for real life, which, once out of now artificially calibrated education systems, will often say NO when you want YES. Disappointment is the lot of us all as we move through life - including encountering producers, directors, casting directors, etc., in an arena in which, if you aren't Maggie Smith (who was far from classically pretty), or someone else so similarly talented they will never be overlooked, you will always encounter rejection.

The smart thing for the girl to do is to stop trying to argue that looks means nothing in the arena she wants to succeed in, acknowledge reality, and initiate a campaign to eliminate at least one barrier to getting parts. Weight and toning up are, after all, manageable issues. If she refuses to do acknowledge this and try to accommodate it, she'll go on failing to get leading roles.

Despite all the fracas about standards changing, the fact is, the era we are living in is an intensely visual one.

Some people are prettier than others; some people have higher IQs than others; some people are born with gifts that most people aren't (paging Mozart); some really ARE a bit more talented than others. In some arenas there is no way to evade this, for instance, musicians and ballet dancers). You don't get top marks at the Royal Academy of Music in violin unless you can really play the stuff. And you don't get the lead in Giselle and Swan Lake if you weigh 175lbs.

But in films and theater, it's easier to make claims of discrimination. In this case, we're talking about a high school production where the dangers of injury have to be considered - the two high school boys are unlikely to have been trained in the technique of lifts the way young male dancers are at the Royal Ballet School, where lifts and partnering are important aspects of classical ballet training for men and starts well before their rehearsals for their very first time as Albrecht in Giselle.

But there are limits, and there are boundaries, and life is unfair. It seldom treats us as well as we feel we deserve.

The current rush to coddle and wrap in cotton wool to shelter against very real realities does not do young people any favours.

by Anonymousreply 97May 12, 2021 6:10 PM

There is plenty of compromise there, instead of fat think of casting women like Christina Hendricks who is a very attractive generously full figured woman, or someone like Lisa Howard. These are women who are on the big side, but attractive and you don't really even notice their size as much as you would someone built like Lizzo for example.

You do have to have some standards, you wouldn't hire someone with a face tattoo either unless the part called for it because otherwise it would just be distracting. Practically speaking, on the stage you don't want anyone up there that blocks too much visually from the other actors on stage or anything that might be taking place upstage. It's not like film where you can create favorable angles so the audience and see the action.

[quote]there's a chemical in plastic that mimics estrogen [bisphenol A (BPA)] and leaks into food, drink, and the ground. Unfortunately it's rarely discussed.

It's discussed more than the fact that high sugar food is more plentiful and readily available than ever before, it's a US cultural norm to carry drinks and snacks everywhere, and people get less physical exercise than at any point in history. Nonstop eating, supersizing, snacking, and "refueling" are all 20th Century phenomena made possible by the obvious industrial scale food production chain. Oddly enough, the obesity epidemic is also a 20th Century phenomenon.

Straight plays have more variety of body types than musical theatre. I saw a tour of Evita with a fat guy in the chorus for Buenos Aires and it was distracting - choruses are typically a bit more uniform. Being bigger leads to moving a bit differently. Without delving into the psychological/perceptual reason why, the fact of the matter is that "fat" tends to play as comedic in a theatrical setting - as does the contrast between fat and thin (Laurel and Hardy). If you want people to see past your weight then lose it. Convincing people that they have no control over their bodies and that a new variant on Affirmative Action must therefore be created for them to "participate in the world" is both perverse and cruel. And it's aesthetically repellent.

by Anonymousreply 184May 16, 2021 4:25 PM

I left a performing arts course only 2 years ago, you'd be surprised by how many people are blind to things such as appropriate casting. Ugly girls going for the lead or overweight girls thinking they were sexy, the guys in general seemed to have a better understanding of the types of roles they fit into.

by Anonymousreply 185May 16, 2021 4:51 PM

If it was just one course, it is not surprising that they do not get it. But it is even worse for those who go into conservatories or college programs. You would think that after the first course or two they would get it. But they remain deluded for the whole time.

This is like that guy cast as Man 6 in Hamilton. That should have told him that the producers did not think he was right for a lead, but he expected to get promoted over people from outside the cast who auditioned for for the leads.

There is a mentality now that theater and casting should follow the same rules as corporations.

The shittiest part of all: she’s not actually fat.

Maybe she can audition for the revival of "My Mother The Car". She can call herself Edsel.

The saddest punchline: fat PR is working and people have started to believe that that is not fat...

People are grifting left and right on identity suppression issues. What terrible times we live in.

by Anonymousreply 217May 26, 2021 12:18 PM

While she may not be fat she's a bit "doughy', not your typical rail thin starlet, for someone in theater there's not a lot of pics of her.

She FAT!

by Anonymousreply 219May 26, 2021 6:03 PM

Is she still fat? Has anyone checked in?

by Anonymousreply 220June 10, 2021 9:34 AM

The problem with this is that she is probably more likely to be cast fat. She is pretty vanilla and would be just another vanilla actress if she was thin. Broadway is littered with actresses that decided to drop weight and discovered that work dried up.

Her second name is literally ‘Mowbray’. How have you all missed that?

R218 her problem isn’t fat so much as it is that hair and that face. She looks like a coarse peasant, and she still would if thin. She doesn’t have eye-catching pretty leading role looks either way, and not many people in life do. Deal.

And what’s wrong with secondary/tertiary character roles, anyway? It’s perfectly respectable to hone one’s craft in such parts, and carve out a niche as a reliable supporting cast player. By going on like this, she’s downcrying important industry workers over her own ego problems.

To borrow a metaphor from a spectator event I know enough about—in life, not everyone can be a star striker, and in fact very few people are; there’s got to be more defenders and wingers and deep-lying playmakers and holding midfielders on a team. And there’s got to be as many linesman, referees, game analysts, trainers, physios & medics, pitch custodians, nutritionists &. cooks, merch & ticket-sellers, tv pundits & radio commentators etc. to make a watchable game happen every week. And there has to be tons of fans, to make it a game worth watching in the first place. All of the people in the roles listed are equally passionate about their chosen interest, and work equally hard to make it happen; the only difference is a certain group gets (over)paid more—and that I think is the rub, isn’t it Abi?

[quote] THIS VILE FAT CUNT SHOULD DIE IN A GREASE FIRE!

She’d put out the fire and sop up the grease.

R220 Nobody can check in because her fat ass is blocking the door so nobody inside can you even check out.

if she was playing Alice in Wonderland, she'd turn down the pill that said eat me because it was too small.

Well Angie spent her life complaining she never got the Lana Turner roles despite being a much better actress. Angie never got the point that Lana was the better star. Nobody was going to buy a movie ticket to see her.

I have no interest in either of these woman but surely Dickinson realised she had a square-block-shaped head which she was obliged to ameliorate with those asymmetrical hairdos.

Does she have the voice for opera?
