Are you glad that Hollywood is on its death bed?

I am.

I was watching the movie POMS on Showtime, and I was horrified. I literally asked myself out loud, "Is THIS the best that Hollywood can do?"

The USA has THE most creative writers, directors, and actors in the world, and all they do is churn out crap.

There has been nothing noteworthy in cinema, in years!

I can't even imagine sitting through POMS in a theater, much less paying to watch it.

Looks like Covid came around just at the right time.

I couldn't tell you what movies were nominated for Oscars in the last 5 or 10 years.

They have all sucked donkey balls.

This is what happens when the millennials take over. Everything goes to shit.

[quote]I was watching the movie POMS on Showtime, and I was horrified.

I am horrified to read that you chose to watch the movie POMS.

But yes, for reasons unrelated to POMS, I agree that Hollywood is on its death bed. It's been a long time coming.

I’m sad.

by Anonymousreply 4April 20, 2021 1:34 PM

OP- You should say- All of the BIG movie theater chains are on their death bed.

The French film industry is being supported and will survive without great issue. The USA is a nation in decline across the board.

Is it on its death bed or is it just transitioning?

by Anonymousreply 7April 20, 2021 1:45 PM

Come out of your batshit cave and watch foreign-language films, OP, just to dispel your cinematic ignorance.

Half of Hollywood appears to be in Byron Bay, NSW at the moment. It's very laid-back there, but I doubt it will have an effect on the industry.

More likely, the audience is dividing. Movies are for 12-year-old boys (which seems to include most straight men), reality TV is for teenagers and frauen, and your high-class HBO/ Netflix/ Amazon-type eight episode TV drama is for the discerning, just as movies used to be in the 60s and 70s. Whether it is dying depends whether you classify these mini-series as coming from Hollywood or not.

R6- Let us discuss the Auto industry. France wouldn't have one if the French government didn't subsidize it HEAVILY.

by Anonymousreply 10April 20, 2021 1:52 PM

I would love to wake up to DL and not read threads from stupid OPs.

by Anonymousreply 11April 20, 2021 1:56 PM

Why is the OP grayed out?

by Anonymousreply 12April 20, 2021 2:01 PM

The standard for the past 90 years of filmgoing--the 100+ minute movie, exhibited in a theatre--is essentially dead (putting aside adolescent comic book movies and other movies for children). The upcoming Academy Awards are further evidence of that.

Nothing will bring it back. CV-19 just hastened its demise.

Streaming TV and newer forms--mini-series, limited series, etc.--are keeping storytelling alive and well, at least.

Millennials are in charge of Hollywood R2?

by Anonymousreply 14April 20, 2021 2:13 PM

Fat, ugly OP and R2 are agents from the Ministry of Culture of Russia (Министерство культуры Российской Федерации). Fuck them both, fuck their ugly mother too.

by Anonymousreply 15April 20, 2021 5:55 PM

It's the old white men running things in Hollywood that are dragging everyone down like we're a part of their saggy testicles.

James Gunn, Joss Whedon, James Cameron, Wes Anderson?

Why are they and their ilk making movies?

The younger crowd needs to move in.

by Anonymousreply 16April 20, 2021 6:02 PM

Nah, it's the money men who have always done their best to ruin it. Witherspoon and Kidman producing Big Little Lies for HBO reminded me of the creation of United Artists, which also had the intention of moving out the money men who want you to rewrite the plot and cast Margot Robbie as the mother of teenagers.
