Cyndi Lauper's 1983 cover "When You Were Mine", originally by Prince

from her first album

LOVE IT. I love how she didn't change the pronouns either to keep people guessing. Too bad she never officially released it as a single

I love both versions but Cyndi slays it.

by Anonymousreply 2April 20, 2021 2:44 AM

Both versions are anthems for me.

R3 yes agreed the original is great too. I love that Cyndi did her own version and wasn't trying to imitate Prince

It was actually my fav cut on SSU album.

Stopping by to say I love this song, it’s my favorite on a great album. Also love Prince’s version.

Hate Cyndi’s voice. Hate. It.

Great song. Always wondered why it wasn't released as a single. Mitch Ryder put out a version around the same time, but it only got to #87 despite featuring Russ Meyer vixen Kitten Natividad in the video.

Honestly it was the only song I hated on SSU

Mitch Ryder’s cover is better than Lauper’s, I think. After Prince original, of course.

It’s probably the SSU song I listen to the most now. Weird they didn’t release it as a single.

R7 blasphemous!

Sinead, The Bangles and Cyndi all took Prince material and made it their own. I remember reading somewhere he actually liked some of these better than his own versions. He was very giving to other artists.

R13 he only liked some covers. In general he didn't like when other singers covered his songs, especially other men. He loved Cyndi though
